Choking on my coco-pops

Morning. Well, actually, afternoon, but let's not get bogged down by details. Straight to the point:

Gallas. Captain. Possibly.

I didn't agree with Robbie Keane's captaincy on his return from his hellish Anfield loan and would find this particular appointment to be a tad disrespectful. Not so much because of his connection to the swamp things but because he hasn't even pulled on a Spurs shirt yet and we have plenty of seasoned Lilywhites that are far far far more deserving.

We await.

Give it to Thud. I cannot bear to see that arrogant french gooner twat wearing the captains arm band.

Sep 11, 2010 at 12:39 PM | Unregistered CommenterDaveyspurs

Not a chance, it'll be Huddlestone.

Sep 11, 2010 at 12:39 PM | Unregistered Commenterpln

No mention of Gomes in any team news???

Sep 11, 2010 at 12:39 PM | Unregistered CommenterDaveyspurs

Im all for supporting Gallas but I agree no way he should be made captain today, I can't see Harry doing it to be honest we shall see though.

Why does Redknapp even entertain stuff like this in the public domain? He even mentioned Patrick Viera again and how he wanted to sign for us. It's redundant and stupid and unless the players know he's taking the piss, possibly destructive. I'm on about Gallas again.

Sep 11, 2010 at 12:44 PM | Unregistered CommenterWest Stand Bagel

Gomes is injured. I think.

Sep 11, 2010 at 12:44 PM | Unregistered CommenterJep

Didn't he go a bit mad when he captained the TWATS!? Thus losing the captaincy to Fabregash.......!

Sep 11, 2010 at 12:46 PM | Unregistered CommenterKirky

He is the best option to be captain Hudd is to soft and wont tell other players when they are not pulling their wait bit Billy Gallas will - I cant wait to see some of my gooner freinds faces if he leads us out - he is sticking two fingers up to the sqauters from Woolwich so get behind him

Sep 11, 2010 at 12:48 PM | Unregistered Commentergillysbaldpatch

So if he isnt going to make him captain why would he mention it, dont think it is right, but i fully expect to see Gallas named captain.
But no matter, more importantly today we need three pionts.

It doesn't really mean much in this day and age, so why not.

Sep 11, 2010 at 12:49 PM | Unregistered CommenterTomst

That's what scares. The fact Harry has prepared us for it, maybe not today but in future weeks.

Sep 11, 2010 at 12:51 PM | Unregistered CommenterJep

Typical Redknapp: it's always all about him.

Looking at it charitably, he wants to back Gallas in public.
Looking at it critically, he's just trying to wind us up to show who's boss.

He always goes on about how fans are basically idiots, but doesn't he realise that's why we care. I agree with the comment above, it would be disrespectful to the existing players and the fans, but in fact, who are the alternatives in the first XI?

Will be Bassong and Gallas at the back, with Bale/Benny and Corluka. Any of those?
Midfield: Hud, Wilson, Modric, Lennon. None of those, really.
VdV, or Pav? Obviously not.

So maybe it's not totally barmy. But I'd give it to Tommy Hud as a reward for his brilliant year. Giving it to Gallas will just be a circus.

Sep 11, 2010 at 12:51 PM | Unregistered Commenterdc

It has got to be Hudd IMO.

Sep 11, 2010 at 12:51 PM | Registered Commenterspooky

Tottenham need a leader, Ledley isn't one and hardly ever plays; Hudd is too quiet; Gallas might be mad but the team needs a fighter on the pitch with the need to come 4th paramount - or else this will be a fucked up jolly, over by Christmas. When the team played badly last season - Wolves [x2]; Liverpool away; Sunderland, there was no-one to re-group; no Blanchflower/Mackay; no Graham Roberts. Fuck the fact that Gallas used to play in red and in blue, there has to be a big figure and not lots of players who put their eyes to the ground when the sweet balls stop coming off because a Stoke or a Wolves or an Everton or, now, a Wigan won't roll over and play dead.

Sep 11, 2010 at 12:54 PM | Unregistered CommenterConnartist

I dont understand you guys - he is a world class player who has left the arse and come to us! Are you going to back him or are you going to boo one of our players?

Hudd is a grat player but he is not a captain

Sep 11, 2010 at 12:54 PM | Unregistered Commentergillysbaldpatch

Gallas has proved he's a mental liability by sulking on the pitch. He's unstable. You want him as your captain? Really?

Sep 11, 2010 at 1:08 PM | Unregistered CommenterAuthor of Comment

Anyone but that arrogant traitor Keane!!

Sep 11, 2010 at 1:17 PM | Unregistered CommenterBeach_bum

too right - someone with the balls to fire his team mates.

are you going to support him or boo him?

Sep 11, 2010 at 1:20 PM | Unregistered Commentergillysbaldpatch

My issue with Gallas being captain has nothing to do with his previous employment it's more the fact he's a new boy at the club...I prefer my captains to have had 2 seasons minimum in the lilywhite shirt and to understand the philosophy of the club. Of course, the lack of any real leaders within the team does make this a difficult find currently....

Sep 11, 2010 at 1:20 PM | Unregistered CommenterJohnnyB

We've definitely needed someone to pick the players up when things aren't going as planned. It's just a shame the only person who has the credentials to do it is 1. French and 2. Ex-scum(s). King is too quiet, Dawson too inexperienced and Keane should never have been made captain after his defection. In fact I think rewarding Keane with the armband after his bindipping exploits was far worse than this.

As for Huddlestone for captain, you must be joking.

Sep 11, 2010 at 1:26 PM | Unregistered CommenterTMWNN

So what if we get a convincing win today, Gallas is captain & puts in a Man Of The Match performance? Will the people on here prefer we had lost ? get a grip boys, this guy is class & we all know it. I trust Harry 100% and i dont hate him because of his West Ham connections.

This is football in 2010, get over it.

Come on you Spurs, One Hotspur, To Dare Is to Do

Sep 11, 2010 at 1:28 PM | Unregistered CommenterWHL Forver

Gallas will naturally shout and attempt to organise. He doesn't need the armband.

Sep 11, 2010 at 1:43 PM | Registered Commenterspooky

Thud captain? You need a leader, someone to motivate and inspire you and give you a bollocking when you need it. How do you come up with Thud? Why not jenas while you're at it? We're not winning the league any time soon with that type of mentality. Pissing me off you are.

Sep 11, 2010 at 1:54 PM | Unregistered CommenterArchibald

What matters is winning, So save the comments until we have had a chance to see what he offers us on the pitch. If he helps win games then ok by me and if he does not perform then Harry will sort him out anyway, So wait and see. Dont forget he walked away from the scum he was not pushed out and it has pissed the twats right off.

Sep 11, 2010 at 2:03 PM | Unregistered Commentermartinyiddo

It is crear from reading everyones POV, that there is no obvious Captain amongst those available, with the excepotion of possibly Keane, who is struggling to stay on the bench, especially if we go 4-5-1.

I am a great fan of the Thud, but I don't see him in this role. If we are looking for someone that leads by example, then there is Bale, but he is probably too young. So this raises the question, assuming we play 4-5-1 away today, would you rather see Keane replace Crouch, so that we can appease the boo boys, if we are forced to play Gallas? Or should we give the job to a proven captain that is going to be playing anyway?

Sep 11, 2010 at 2:06 PM | Unregistered CommenterSpurredoninDublin

One other thing in favour of gallas - he speaks french so can communicate well with benny and bassong - both of those two are prone to errors and mad moments and I'm sure he will let them know what he thinks if they f*ck up.

In the absence of Woodgate, he is the closest we have to a natural captain - so I back him fully, unless he lets us down in which case he will instantly revert to horrid ex scum mad mongrel status.

Sep 11, 2010 at 2:06 PM | Unregistered Commenterleonardo

Gallas captain on his debut irks me. That's all. I'm not saying Hudd is captain material, but then I never thought/think that Ledley is either. Ledley leads in a more subtle way, what with his masterclass of defending that inspires the likes of Dawson and the team. He inspires because of who he is.

Hudd, would purely be cosmetic. Yes, I know, what's the point of it. Poor fragile Spooky who doesn't want the big bad ex-gooner as captain from the off. So give it to someone else and let Gallas get on with leading in a similar way that Ledley does but more vocally.

Once Gallas has played a few games, proven his worth, then give him the captaincy. I'm man enough to man up at that point. Just not yet.

Sep 11, 2010 at 2:12 PM | Registered Commenterspooky

Petty Spooky, very petty. But I agree.

Otherwise, I'd give it Keane. If he plays. Although that would be equally off key.

Sep 11, 2010 at 2:16 PM | Unregistered CommenterKink

Don't rule out Moddle. He captained us in pre-season and has top level international experience.

Sep 11, 2010 at 2:17 PM | Unregistered Commenter2P8G

just look at the reaction regarding gallas........

marvellous!

Sep 11, 2010 at 2:23 PM | Unregistered Commenterbilliospur

If it means keeping Ledley safe for Tuesday...so be it! Gallas will tell everyone to get on with it

Sep 11, 2010 at 2:28 PM | Unregistered Commenternorth bucks yido

If he's made captain because we simply don't play King (Daws is out) and etc etc, then don't fret. I'm not about to jihad all over this. I just don't like the idea. Sorry. I'm a purist at some given moments. And yes, the collective of 11 shirts is more important than the individual. So if he wears the armband, I'll get on with giving my support. It's just that people are being very very selective with their opinions on Gallas - forgetting a lot of what he has become known for. For me, its a gesture (be it he might be captain for one game) a little too far.

Sep 11, 2010 at 2:28 PM | Registered Commenterspooky

Harry doesn't care for loyalties any ways. He's an Arsenal fan no? If he thinks Gallas as captain works then it works.

Sep 11, 2010 at 2:31 PM | Unregistered CommenterGeneral Brickhouse

I don't GaF about his past as we have lacked a true leader for decades.
So long as he has left his handbags at that place I don't care & it will
really stir up their crowd much to my amusement..things go round....

Sep 11, 2010 at 2:31 PM | Unregistered CommenterAntiOnan

Spooky get is right.

Huddlestone captain.

Sep 11, 2010 at 2:32 PM | Unregistered CommenterJep

From the beeb:

"William Gallas makes his Spurs debut alongside Younes Kaboul in central defence but is not captain, that honour falling to Tom Huddlestone. Rafeel van der Vaart also makes his Tottenham bow, playing just behind lone striker Roman Pavlyuchenko, while Luka Modric moves to the left side of midfield and Gareth Bale drops back to the left full-back role."

Excited to see how rvD does just behind Pav.

Tottenham: Cudicini, Corluka, Kaboul, Gallas, Bale, Lennon, Palacios, Huddlestone, Van der Vaart, Modric, Pavlyuchenko.

Subs: Pletikosa, Jenas, Keane, Crouch, Bassong, Kranjcar, Assou-Ekotto.

Tasty.

1-1. What a shit equaliser.

Sep 11, 2010 at 3:41 PM | Unregistered CommenterJep

OK, now you can rule out Moddle.

Modric on crutches!!!!! What the hell is going on?

Sep 11, 2010 at 3:58 PM | Unregistered CommenterTim

Don't fret about. Precautionary I reckon, the crutches.

Sep 11, 2010 at 4:11 PM | Unregistered CommenterJep

Another bad performance from us we badly need to drop wilson he really is not cutting it. Corluka needs a rocket strapped to his bollocks lennon pffff fell apart when modric came off. I hate having the ump lol

Sep 11, 2010 at 4:58 PM | Unregistered CommenterEspyid

That was a very poor performance gents. Only Bale was giving his all out there!!! Gallas limping at the end? Modric leaves on crutches....! Our strikers are not doing anything in the league yet are they? Maybe it's going to take time to get used to this 4-5-1 formation....We were lucky to get a point, well done Carlo. Defoe get well soon! Gulp. And Spurs get Obika back ASAP!!!! At least the guy has pace up front.

Sep 11, 2010 at 5:03 PM | Unregistered CommenterTim

I didn't watch the whole match. Only bits. But what I saw wasn't awful and VdV and Gallas looked promising in what I saw. Can we really expect to just plop two new players into the side and expect instant gelling? Spurs of old would have somehow dropped all three points. We need to improve but have faith! This wasn't a Stoke.
Then again if I had watched the whole game I might be up for slitting my wrists.
How was it????
OK maybe we're doomed :)

Sep 11, 2010 at 5:12 PM | Unregistered Commenternycyid

Poor performance, but it will come good.

Sep 11, 2010 at 5:12 PM | Unregistered CommenterJep

On GloryGlory it seems like most yids are disappointed in Gallas. Some people seemed to think we looked good til Modders went off. How was Pav? I do think we have a big problem in the goal-scoring department and am gutted that we didn't pick up a new striker in the transfer window. Especially now that Defoe is out--somewhat useless that he has been for us.
It seems to me as much as I hate to say it that there still is this huge gulf between us and the top 3. We don't pull out critical wins like the Scum did today. But when you look around at other would-be contenders for 4, you have to take a little heart. Shitteh drawing today for example ...
We are building though. I do believe this and we do have a lot of talent in the squad now. It's up for 'Arry and the lads to get it right. COYS!!!!
