Jim White's head to explode in 3...2...1...

Always amazes me how we can get down to the final day of the transfer window, and still be looking to acquire new players. I guess our desperation (along with everyone else's) and the opposing selling clubs agenda mean that the cat and mouse game played in the weeks leading up to 6pm cut off on the 31st August, serves both best to get a deal done and dusted. So in that final day, everyone goes loopy. Must be easier to negotiate when the clock is ticking because something has to happen, right? Last chance saloon.

If you go by what Harry says (when he's not abusing Sky Sports reporters), we need a CM and a striker.

We've signed a keeper on a season long loan (Stipe Pletikosa). Got Gallas in. Sandro has arrived. But, there is still persistence with Parker. And there are a number of forwards we've been linked with since the summer. So we've not been completely inactive. Just not overly active for areas deemed key for our continued progression. That added depth and removal of deadwood to freshen things up. Plenty of flirting, no first base.

I guess there are no young British forwards or continental gems to wine and dine.

If you look back to the methodology used to sign Modric and Berbatov (to name a couple of examples), these were players scouted and then bought well within the boundaries of the window. You'd think, having finished 4th and qualified for the CL we'd have had players tied up long before today and thus aid in avoiding the imminent melt-down of Sky Sports News.

Comolli, where are yooooooooou?

But these modern times are not as free-spending as previous seasons. There doesn't seem to be much in the way of options, and what is available appears to be way too expensive. I always thought we'd consolidate CL status with a superstar or two. I guess that's an expectancy too far. And probably nothing more than the want for something that's not actually necessary (Moddle, Bale etc - are players we should retain our faith in, as both are potential superstars). Signing of an actual world class player isn't and never has been easy, and is probably something we won't be able to do for a while yet (if all goes to plan). But it's what we lack. It's the difference between contending for 4th and challenging for the title. The other 'top 3' and City would tell you they have one or two world class players in their ranks. Liverpool too.

This is probably why some of us are frustrated with it all. But gun to head, we can't force a transfer just because it works in discussions on blogs and forums.

Perhaps we don't have quite as much disposable money available (to buy really good players who could play for us, if we could afford to match their estimation). Or maybe there is a genuine lack of affordable viable deals to be had (was Fabiano really ever an option?). Which means there is potential for panic. We've done that before what with the re-signing of Chimbonda.

This time round, it's not the defence that needs fixing up. So, who's it gonna be? Adebayor is being linked again. You would also have to speculate that one or two of our current players (the deadwood) will be shifted out on loan or otherwise. Odds on Keane to West Ham and Parker to us? With plenty of spin thrown in to attempt to mask the back footing? I guess with everyone desperate for an injection of new blood, it's all quite possible. It probably doesn't matter what's in the syringe, just stab it into the vein.

I hope we keep a level head. No need for dilatation of the pupils.

Levy and Harry should only sign a player(s) if it's the right player. Might be that there are three or four 'right players', and for reasons touched upon above, it comes down to the last day thanks to the tradition of wheeling (soz 'arry) and dealing and the fact that those opposing clubs play hard-ball right up to the final hour.

Irony to all this is, on the surface, it all looks a bit manic. But then most of what's being written is just commentary on what people think is going on. Leaked info from agents, genuine club insiders talking to their journo mates. Take a look around:

Adebayor to Spurs/Adebayor to remain at City. Parker bid rejected from Spurs/Parker to join Spurs. Young to Spurs/Young in no hurry to move.

All corners covered then.

Keane is now being linked with a move to Besiktas. Jenas to Stoke? Is 46 year old Sully Muntari really going to sign for us? Jim White's head to explode in 3...2...1...

We don't need much in the way of change. I'd rather a new forward than a new CM. Would love a game-changer, a talismanic signing. But my feet are firmly on the ground.

Onwards to 6pm.

I hope to be surprised. But won't be surprised if nothing happens.

Visit the DML Facebook page for collective shaking of the head whilst the hours tick away with no sign of a new player signing for the Lilywhites.

I think it's the financial issue's as much as any. Everyone assumes because we made the CL we've got £20m plus what we normally have in each window so we must have plenty. I don't think that's the case at all.

We all think Levy was being Levy when he managed to get 2 sponsorships and therefore more cash. Maybe, that just like the £20m from the CL is being used for something else? Stock piled for the new stadium maybe? Who knows, but judging by the free transfers and loan deals I don't think we're as loaded people think.

I expect not to be surprised.

I also expect to be disappointed :(

Aug 31, 2010 at 11:24 AM | Unregistered CommenterTrembly

There should be a 1-day transfer window every 6 months, which'd stop all this endless, tedious fucking around.

Aug 31, 2010 at 11:27 AM | Unregistered CommenterOldSpur

Seems to me that the problem lays with use not being able to offload the deadwood we have at the Lane, Levy will not warrant the signing of 3/4 new players while we still have a full donkey stall.
The powers that be should have put a for sale/part exchange sign around the neck of each player wished to be offloaded before the window opened, as we have it, another window is barely ajar and we still have donkeys here that should have been put out to pasture since Jol, instead, we are welcoming the recently departed back at WHL. Concerned? You should be, because this squad is no-way good enough to fight on four fronts.

We'll sign two players. And both will seem to be non-glamorous but will end up being shrewd.

Aug 31, 2010 at 11:33 AM | Unregistered CommenterOops

i am so gutted!! spurs, unless for something miraculous happening in the next 6 hours, are going to fuck it up a right treat...

Aug 31, 2010 at 11:34 AM | Unregistered Commenterlilywhitemike

I can't see anything happening, but then I suspect something will, last minute. Probably West Ham agreeing to sell us Parker with one or two of our players going there. Hutton and Keane possibly?

Aug 31, 2010 at 11:41 AM | Unregistered CommenterThe Machine

Babel is locked in a transfer battle inbetween us and West Ham.

What the fuck?

Aug 31, 2010 at 11:44 AM | Unregistered Commenterkilljoy

Killjoy - stay away from Sky Sports News, there's a good fella.

Aug 31, 2010 at 11:46 AM | Unregistered CommenterOops

None of the prospective signings are exciting.

Aug 31, 2010 at 12:00 PM | Unregistered CommenterStan the Man

Aye stay away from sky sports news....click on newsnow instead....much more entertaining.

Fuck it i'll be checking them all all day to see what actually happens....Parker spotted at the Lodge apparently....then again apparently he is training at the spammers at the same time.....

Keane to Besikitas ..... hope we dont do what man city wont and thats loan a player that could be more useful on the bench to a rival (ie Villa) If we dont get some striker in then whats the point in loaning Keaneo out? (apart from the fact he's a .....)

Latest thingy is we might get Carlton Cole or Babel

Holy shite....if harry does have an ace up his sleeve that nobody knows about then who the hell is it? DJ Campbell oh christ!

Anyway at least the backup goalie is sorted...I remember this guy being good on Champ Manager 4...but then again so was Zuberbuhler.....hope that puts Cudicini back to 3rd choice.

Cant see much happening actually and am primed for major disappointment ...... even if we get Parker (who'd be better than Wilson at the moment) then we will have strengthened every department of the team except the frontline and that annoys me.

Aug 31, 2010 at 12:03 PM | Unregistered CommenterTomtraubert

Sky copy stuff from News Now and then News Now re-copy the same stories and repeat them again. It's a beautiful process of not a lot.

Aug 31, 2010 at 12:06 PM | Unregistered CommenterGrim down south

Why everyone so wound up?
This is same old Spurs, same old Levy. Will be early exit of CL, early exit of Mugs Cup and a 6th finnish with a run in the domestic cups.
Think Im a mug? We"ll see in May 2011 wont we.
btw.......Pav, Bassong and Palacios are pants.
Get real everyone, and Levy, you shoulda got ya cheque book out earlier and bought QUAL:ITY to kick start the "New Spurs" season after all the graft the existing players put in last term.

Harry on SSN has said he'd be surprised if we signed anyone today.

Mis-direction or the truth?

Aug 31, 2010 at 12:17 PM | Registered Commenterspooky

oldspur...1 day every 6 months, is that how often you get it up?

Aug 31, 2010 at 12:22 PM | Unregistered Commenterthfc

Spooky

God knows with harry but after the "fuck off" incident i'd be surprised if he tells them the truth about anything again!

or maybe he is telling the truth because if he lands 2/3 today you can bet yer ass that the first thing the next sky cunt says will be..."harry you are a bit of a wheeler dealer aren't you" (followed by loud crashing noises)

Ok is mis-direction-truth

Even harry dont know

Many of the more mouthy elements on these sorts of blogs clearly don't understand the difference between Fantasy Football and the real thing. Securing the right players for your squad is a little more complicated than it is on the Play Station.

I can't see that Redknapp and Levy have done anything to NOT warrant the support and good will of Spurs supporters.

What a bunch of ingrates we so often are at the Lane.

Aug 31, 2010 at 12:29 PM | Unregistered CommenterJason King

Yes now thats what i've been waiting for

our 20 goal a season man

Steven Pienaar

Maybe we'll play 3-2-2-2-1

Gomes

Daws - Ledley/Bassong - Gallas

Parker-Sandro

Thud-Modric

Lennon-Bale

A striker

With Pienaar on the bench

(i'm not doing formations for every fucking rumour today you'll be glad to know)

Aug 31, 2010 at 12:30 PM | Unregistered CommenterTomtraubert

gotta love harry

“Well, we’ve spoken to Lionel [Messi] – he really wants to play for Tottenham Hotspur.” (today)

Jason - Who you calling an 'element'?

Aug 31, 2010 at 12:37 PM | Unregistered CommenterGrim down south

A striker now equals.............drum roll please......

Louis fucking Saha

I'm off to lunch......a liquid one.

Aug 31, 2010 at 12:37 PM | Unregistered CommenterTomtraubert

fuck. Looks like our last chance of signing a mega striker has gone now Jason Roberts and Marcus Bent are committed elsewhere.

Aug 31, 2010 at 12:39 PM | Unregistered Commenterchrisman

I dont mind if we dont buy anyone. But, please, why can't we for once get rid of the rubbish players that eat into our funds through expensive wages that they don't earn. I'm talking Jenas, Hutton and Keane here. Jenas has singlehandedly cost the club millions in terms of progression. Just think of the players that have had to be sent packing just to accomodate him; Danny Murphy, Pedro Mendes(Portugal World Cup Team), Zokora, Kevin Prince Boateng(Now of AC Milan - 6 months after departure from Spurs), Bostock(WASTED! To accomodate Jenas)....etc, etc. Even O'Hara is better than this chap. I'll take 10th and exit in the first round if it means finally celebrating the exit of these Donkeys. The less said about Hutton and his 9million pound move the better.

Sell....or give away for goodness sake.

Aug 31, 2010 at 12:39 PM | Unregistered CommenterRonnie

super pavwhateveryourrnameis is shite, we need top striker in top leagues/cups IT AINT ROCKET SCIENCE

jason king..you is a poof (an Element of humour)

Aug 31, 2010 at 12:48 PM | Unregistered Commenterdaddy spur

yeah but didn't you see how Hutton tore apart Stenhousemuir and Montrose for Rangers? He's a brilliant attacking full back.

If I was Keane or Jenas I would just ask for my contract to be terminated. It's embarrassing, the club clearly doesn't want them, but they won't go away. For the sake of your own dignity, please take the hint and fuck off.

Aug 31, 2010 at 12:55 PM | Unregistered Commenterchrisman

Also - I'm gonna stick my neck out and say that for the next 10 years we will regret not signing Asamoah 'is he complete shit or the next Drogba' Gyan.

Speculate to accumulate Harry!! If we don't buy a striker it will be soo stupid, given that Harry clearly does not really rate or trust Keane or Pav

Aug 31, 2010 at 1:02 PM | Unregistered Commenterchrisman

I wouldnt be surprised if there were a few low key loan deals, would like to see Gud back, but I'm really not expecting to see tottenham next to any player names on the list outside of youngsters being loaned out.

There was a lot of noise that stars were waiting to see if we qualified for the group stages but by then it was done and dusted basically we were looking for a superstar, but of those there are the kind expect no less than CL and wages much higher than our limit, and those that have CL experience but are fading rapidly and the clubs are asking well above their worth. Short version - CL or not the stumbling point is not the money in the bank, not the CL qualification its the wage structure, something I personally see as a necassary evil at this stage.

What we need is a youngster that is international class but not enough reputation to demand high wages, the transfer fee is largely irrelevant. They do exist as city proved with Johnston. Did anyone get the phone number of that mexican lad Dos Santos, he might be worth a punt...

Aug 31, 2010 at 1:06 PM | Unregistered Commenterbonse

I am proper knobbed right off! I woke up this morning hoping to hear we have signed or are linked with a world class player! 1st time in the champions league and nothing!!! Joke. Gyan going to Sunderland??? I'd take a punt on him! Better than still having father ted at the club, ship him out to newcastle or besitkas.

FFS I wanted to be nursing a full boner today, but i can't even manage a lazy one!!!

Also..............how many transfer windows is Donkey Jenas going to survive??? I get him out the club right away and bring in either Ironside or Joey Deacon to fill his place!!!

Aug 31, 2010 at 1:16 PM | Unregistered Commentergonads69

Man!...This sucks!

To think we all awaited anxiously for our first ever champions league qualification thinking it would open the door for our entry to happiness and quaranteed greatness. And now the reality strikes...Crouch and long ball nonesense is the new 'Tottenham way'. Is it time to give up?

Aug 31, 2010 at 1:19 PM | Unregistered CommenterRonnie

It's against the law not to get a hard on on transfer deadline day! not even any news about possible signings!!! Inter, Barca etc must be shitting themselves at the thought of possibly facing Lanky Bollocks, Defoe, Crazy Paving and Father Ted!!!

Aug 31, 2010 at 1:24 PM | Unregistered Commentergonads69

There has to be one loan signing out there that would excite us and actually improve us.

Aug 31, 2010 at 1:25 PM | Registered Commenterspooky

Father Ted to N'Castle and Ameobi in return as compensation. Gives us something different rom Crouch.

Aug 31, 2010 at 1:27 PM | Unregistered Commenterchrisman

Ameobi is not giving me a lazy one!!! Father Ted could be off to turkey!

Aug 31, 2010 at 1:30 PM | Unregistered Commentergonads69

I hate deadline day.....
The key issue with the one today is that so many players are away on international duty.
The Pienaar move is evidently nothing but rumour as he's physically in South Africa at the moment.
I'm confused as to why Harry has previously commented that we need a new striker, but here we are again, with 4 hours to go and sod all happening!

Aug 31, 2010 at 2:05 PM | Unregistered CommenterWalkerboy

is gonads69 a position?

Aug 31, 2010 at 2:06 PM | Unregistered CommenterLemonadeMoney

At the risk of sounding like one of the "more mouthy elements" (better than the holier than thou element ;-), I would argue that the reason many fans are upset is because it seemed that the club really had a chance to push on, to go up a level and not just dream of snapping at the heels of the top 3. I'm sure that 99% of fans are eternally grateful for what Redknapp and Levy have achieved and their concern for a lack of transfer activity is by no means intended as a diatribe against the club's hierarchy.

As it stands, who can see us finishing in the top four? I hope we get a couple in today....

Aug 31, 2010 at 2:06 PM | Unregistered CommenterJ.

BABEL FFS

Aug 31, 2010 at 2:17 PM | Registered Commenterspooky

Didn't Harry also previously say that if you don't buy players you can't improve? Then commented that if you aren't improving, everyone else moves on ahead of you......
Hmmmm......... So we sit pretty much stagnant throughout the summer and into the new season, while others around spend moneyl

Aug 31, 2010 at 2:20 PM | Unregistered CommenterWalkerboy

Carric to return to WHL ????

He has not become a bad player, just dipped off of Fergies radar.

All we need is a swap with WHU Cole for Keane + chuck in Kyle (the shit one for good measure).

Gomes - Hutton Gallas King Bale Modric Lennon Hudd Jenas Dos Santos Crouch

Subs - Pav, Crouch, Palacios, Kaboul , Krancy, Dawson,

Sorted.

Aug 31, 2010 at 2:40 PM | Unregistered Commentergonads69

stevo spurs? gallas in ahead of dawson? id only play gallas when king cant play.

Aug 31, 2010 at 2:42 PM | Unregistered Commentergonads69

Stevo also named Crouch in starting 11 and on the bench, but no Defoe. More importantly, Hutton and Jenas in the team? O.o Unless I misconstrued your post.

Why aren't we bidding for Carlton Cole?

Aug 31, 2010 at 2:49 PM | Unregistered CommenterGrim down south

Lmfao J, i only just seen that lol! just heard that the east london pikeys are in for babbel.........................phewwww lol

Aug 31, 2010 at 2:51 PM | Unregistered Commentergonads69

Grim, why would we? If we sign Babel he'll play on the wing not up front, so it's a Lennon replacement/option if Azza is still struggling with form/fitness. We tried for Young, so it makes sense. And Babel will be unleashed for us. I think he's been wasted at Liverpool. Remember how highly rated he was before they signed him?

Aug 31, 2010 at 2:51 PM | Unregistered CommenterJep

carlton cole? i'd rather have cheryl cole, at least she would stiffen up our back four

Aug 31, 2010 at 2:54 PM | Unregistered Commentergonads69

Babel is going to West Ham now. It's ridiculous the way these things get reported.

Aug 31, 2010 at 2:55 PM | Unregistered CommenterOracle

Ryan Babel - play the fucker up front and he may just be brilliant.

Aug 31, 2010 at 2:57 PM | Unregistered Commenterchrisman

No new striker then Levy? Harry? Big chance blown in my eyes. Not sure how we expect to charge our way through four fronts with what we've got.
