Levy, don't even think about it

Dear Mr Levy,

I'll get straight to the point.

Leyton high road, in-between the KFC and Orient is Coronation Gardens. Lovely place, probably the only place in Leyton where you won't find a bed mattress or broken television every few feet as you walk briskly along. What you will find are some park benches, specifically the ones that face the high road, near the bus stop. And here, on Fridays and most weekends you will see Whiskey Tom. You can't really miss him to be honest. Stinks to high heaven, always intoxicated on Tennents, puking up against walls, screaming at the trees. He's about forty-five, looks sixty. Scruffy beard, stained clothes. You get the picture. He's a hobo, a tramp. Probably has some mighty deep story about how he ended up on the streets, but you'll never get past his ramblings to ever know.

He's a fruit loop. My personal favourite was the time he pissed in his boots and chased a number 357 bus screaming till his lungs burst that 'Satan's seed needed to be purified'. Go visit, he's always there. Not sure what he does for the rest of the week, but probably sleeps it off in some squat somewhere. Or just uses one of the many street-beds you get in that part of east London.

If you want to sign someone on a free, then I suggest Tom. To my knowledge he has absolutely no associations with Chelsea and Arsenal and even though his plight appears to be one of sadness, he's actually quite content with his little kingdom of desolation. You'll never find him sitting in the middle of the street crying. Standing up and urinating over cars, guaranteed on a Saturday night.

Don't say I didn't give you the heads up.

regards,

Spooky

Whiskey Tom can play centre-back right?

Aug 19, 2010 at 11:22 PM | Unregistered CommenterKlaxons in the Wind

Just embrace it. Great cover at CB. Clearly Kaboul isn't fancied. Corluka is no where near good enough. Dawson looks all at sea without King, Bassong is prone to the odd shocker. Woodgate will never kick a ball again, and King is just never a certainty !

Welcome to right, white side of North London !

Dumb and dumber. Gallas would be a great acquisition for us.

I welcome him :-) They took our Center Back Captain on free, now we take their's....

Reading between the lines, I think spooky approves of this transfer.

First bad thing I've seen you post Spooky.

Gallas has no loyalty to anyone, so his previous 'allegiances' shouldn't matter. He will be great cover for Ledley and has that CL experience that we need in the week.

Aug 19, 2010 at 11:32 PM | Unregistered CommenterTomst

This will be a brilliant signing if it comes off. How many proven winners do we have in this squad? With his experience, his leadership and will to win, we will improve.

There will always be a petty few who will boo him no matter what. I just hope the rest of us drown him out.

These style of letters, they tend not to be the opinion of the author but rather a slice of the majoritys feelings. Browsing the forums tonight, we are split about this.

Aug 19, 2010 at 11:35 PM | Unregistered CommenterOops

Gallas doesn't give a shit about Chelsea, Arsenal or Spurs. Its all about the colour of the money, the colour of the shirt is the last thing on their minds.

Just another player through the doors, on a free with champions league experience.

Couldn't care who he used to play for if he can do a job for us.

PLN - not a lot of money if you believe the stories about the wage offered to him by both Arsenal and us.

As the other article tonight says :- masterstroke signing.

Whiskey Tom sounds like a legend.

Aug 19, 2010 at 11:38 PM | Unregistered CommenterPaxton Yid

Spooky you taking the piss with this or what? I only wish we signed Bellamy, and we'd be one cunt away from challenging for the title.

Aug 19, 2010 at 11:41 PM | Unregistered CommenterBen

My point wasn't what we're paying him, its that he doesn't care who the money comes from.

Aug 19, 2010 at 11:41 PM | Unregistered CommenterPLN

Wasn't Kaboul signed for cover for King & Woodgate? If King plays that makes Kaboul 5th choice behing King, Dawson, Bassong & Gallas.

One point this signing does prove is that Woodgate's career is over, can anyone see us signing Gallas if there was any chance that Woodgate would play again?

Aug 19, 2010 at 11:42 PM | Unregistered CommenterKevin

He'll do a job for us, as much of horrible personality that he is, its a shrewd, brilliant move on Harry's part.

Aug 19, 2010 at 11:43 PM | Unregistered CommenterNameless One

Greavsy18 - he got stripped of their captaincy for being a knob you spaz.

Aug 19, 2010 at 11:45 PM | Unregistered CommenterEdd

I personaly witnessed the 28 min horror show in berne first hand and i can safely say we need cover in this postion, ok Gallas wore red and white and blue before but i'm sure it will upset more gooners than yids when we push on this season, it's not as if he's a local boy and has ties to any club here anyway, lets just get over it and get behind Harry and the 11 he decides to put out each week.

Aug 19, 2010 at 11:47 PM | Unregistered CommenterBillyTheYid

Appreciate his qualities and experience but he's a prick and meant to be destructive in the dressing room. My moneys on him being sent to us by Wenger.

Agent Gallas. You have been activated.

Spooky is fishing.

Aug 19, 2010 at 11:50 PM | Unregistered CommenterOllie

Its all about spurs right? I dont give a monkeys where he used to play, he's one of the best defenders around, and hopefully come next week he'll be in the white and blue of spurs. This is a fantastic signing for us, and i hope he helps us to top four again. why would we say no to one of the prems best defenders on a free?? I just hope the spurs fans cop on, and get behind him, coz hopefully he's one of us now!!

Aug 20, 2010 at 12:01 AM | Unregistered Commenterandy

Mixed feelings about Gallas.

On the plus: He is experienced, in Europe and Premier League, he has won bags of trophies and titles, and he is free!

On the negative: He's a c**t, (but then so are Ronaldo, Rooney, Drogba, Berbatov and Snjeider - but would we turn any of them down?), He's un-loyal, but it's only a one year deal, so who cares? He's 32 - but again, its only a one year deal.

Overall, I think a sound move by 'Arry, could work out nicely though. I wouldn't put it against him having a clash with one of our players though..... My bet is Keano.

Aug 20, 2010 at 12:01 AM | Unregistered CommenterJames

If Levy has signed Gallas to boost shirt sales, a la Beckham to Real Madrid, then I don't think it's going to work.

But if Levy and Harry have signed Gallas to give us cover at the back then more power to them. Progress in the Champions League whilst maintaining a challenge in the Prem first, and ask questions later.

Aug 20, 2010 at 12:05 AM | Unregistered CommenterZonergem

Ill have him but I reckon he's a commoli type destructive mole

Aug 20, 2010 at 12:09 AM | Unregistered Commenteryabba

glad to see support for the signing, harry will handle him no prob and we will benefit from his experience like we did with davids even if its only for a year. hes no gooner legend so thats not an issue and he'll be well up for doing them in the derby. was whisky tom in berne with all the other p**s heads?

Aug 20, 2010 at 12:10 AM | Unregistered Commenterdixta

Firstly I think Spooky is mocking those who are against the deal cos of Arsenal connectio.
I think's it's a perfect signing. I was thinking we need a 'Naybet' who is still quality but is experienced.
But it's actually a bonus that the experience comes from the Premiership & the CL.
I don't rthink it matters who he has played for, these days the players don't care about the clubs like the fans do and you have to get used to not idolising your own, or caring about the others. Sure Gallas won't care about the club, but he'll still play as well as ever - If he didn't care where the money came from before but played well, then what does it matter as long as he does the same now?
With his age he will basically share the LCB position with King. King is first choice, but Gallas comes in for the 2nd game of the week. King in Prem, Gallas in CL. Simple.
I think Kaboul will be 5th choice CB, but 2nd choice RB and also in the mix for CM if needed.
He'll get games.
Gallas is a clever signing and a good deal. Anyone who disagrees is doing so based on his Arsenal connection, which is stupid imo. I mean Gallas is a mercenary you say? Well that's even better because it shows he's no Arsenal legend or stalwart gooner. We've had Graham as manager ffs, and they don't come much more 'Arsenal' than that. Gallas could be more 'Tottenham' by the time he's done and we'll love him for it.

Aug 20, 2010 at 12:12 AM | Unregistered CommenterLibertarian Deist

One year deal, limited risk. If he plays well, acts right he stays. If he arses about and unsettles, then he can be shipped out at a reasonably low cost. Masterstroke, minimal disruption if we walk him in 4 months because he's sooking it up.

Whiskey Toms story is a sad one. He used to be a Merchant Banker, now he's just a...

Aug 20, 2010 at 12:12 AM | Unregistered CommenterDr Oyvind

We need him - Berne made that clear. Although the idea of only playing nice guys from round the corner who have never played for any unpleasant teams before is an attractive one - I think we have to get real on this...

Ollie.

What's spooky fishing for?

Billytheyid.

Well said.

I never did like the cunt not because of who he played for but because I'd heard he was a cunt. I'd prefer someone else really but who else is there out there with that kind of experience who was that good and is available on a free?

Maybe he'll do a hartson and fail his medical later on.

Opinion seems divided on this. I'm actually struggling to decide how I really feel about this move. Footballing & financial reasons = sound move. Team harmony = possibly not the best signing. If anyone can sort him out Joe & Harry can.

p.s. I reckon Kaboul is down as rb cover for this season. Or cm/cb in 'easy' games.

Could be plenty happening in the next 10 days or so. I'd say when gallas signs Hutton is off. Apparently levy is gonna give Harry 15 mil and 90k/week for fabiano if we go through on wed night. He'd not be cup tied if sevilla get knocked out. And even if he was Harry is more interested in maintaining out position in the top 4. If fabiano comes in expect pav or keane to go. Keane probably to villa or something.

Aug 20, 2010 at 12:19 AM | Unregistered CommenterTomtraubert

Luis Fabiano will be cup tied, I'm sure of that.

And glad to hear that people are thinking with their heads on this one.

Aug 20, 2010 at 12:27 AM | Unregistered CommenterCrisandro

Jesus the daily fail are going mental now.

Ok so they have the same info re gallas as others but they are also expecting us to sign 2 more ex cunts. Hleb and diarra. Don't worry they are the worst of the worst. They expected a deal for remy on Wednesday. So don't expect diarra hleb or pienaar to sign. Actually looking at their record don't expect gallas to sign either!!!!!

Aug 20, 2010 at 12:31 AM | Unregistered CommenterTomtraubert

Crisandro

he'll only be cuptied if sevilla go through. Eufa changed the rules on this back in march. I'm sure of that.

So you are sure sevilla will go through?

Aug 20, 2010 at 12:35 AM | Unregistered CommenterTomtraubert

Fishing? If not, get over yourself spooky. Anyone with half a feckin eye can see this is a good deal for us, the kind of player we need to add experience and sure up the backline. The younger signings and the big money need to go on the more attacking players. Gallas, young and fabiano and august ends a very happy month indeed

Aug 20, 2010 at 12:39 AM | Unregistered CommenterEssexyid

we ain't getting young full stop and I wouldnt like to bet on fabiano either. And august might not be that great if things go pear shaped on Wednesday. Hopefully not though obviously. But we ain't getting young. Can u see us paying 15 ish for fabiano and at least the same again for young. I can't.

Aug 20, 2010 at 12:46 AM | Unregistered CommenterTomtraubert

Putting past loyalties aside, he would be a great signing. He's on a free, knows the prem inside and out, he's a winner and would slot straight in if needed. Its not a defo he would start every week ahead of say Dawson and King, but great cover and experience on this voyage of discovery season. COYS!!

Getting Gallas for free (as in no purchase price) has to be a masterstroke. I rarely, if ever post on here, but while I thouroughly enjoyed the great description of Old Whiskey Tom (and love reading this site), feel compelled to write. What are those against this transfer on? Are we afraid of success or something? I've had gooner twats swinging their fists at me on the terraces (as they then were) of WHL in the early 80s like the best of you, but I'm quite happy to take a professional footballer of his class to the true home of top class football... Look at Jennings, do we all think of him as a gooner cunt?

Aug 20, 2010 at 12:49 AM | Unregistered Commentergodders

Yeah sure, react to a team folding under pressure by signing someone who does the exact same thing

Great idea Harry

Aug 20, 2010 at 12:52 AM | Unregistered Commenteranon

Who gives a shit if his name is Gallas and he played for scumbags? All i want is a winning Spurs..so go and fuck yourself, keep your old and outdated ideas for yourself.

Aug 20, 2010 at 1:06 AM | Unregistered CommenterIver Biggen

A player of his quality is welcome to join our team. I don't care who he played for you know why? IT DOESN'T MATTER!!!!!

Just hope it happens......?

Aug 20, 2010 at 1:10 AM | Unregistered CommenterRick

Doesn't matter what Spooky's agenda is. Gallas... good cover. That's all you need. Can't get the Birmingham picture out of my mind, but then what would the masses think of us if every mistake were filmed and shown to the world?

''Appreciate his qualities and experience but he's a prick and meant to be destructive in the dressing room. My moneys on him being sent to us by Wenger''

This deal seems like it has a hidden agenda? or is it just me..
Hopefully Harry doesn't play him against young boys.

Aug 20, 2010 at 1:31 AM | Unregistered CommenterWilliam

who is the idiot that wrote this crap insecure bunch of geezers . Ooooh boo hoo he played for arsenal or chelsea well so did Jummy greaves PAH!

Aug 20, 2010 at 1:32 AM | Unregistered Commenterstephenperth

Problem is that he really is actually a shit player now. Why didn't the goons renew his contract? Did anyone see his drastic performances last year for the ar5e? Didn't people see how crap he was at the worlcup for France? Waste of money and a total twat... Let's get lass from Madrid, very good player...

Aug 20, 2010 at 2:43 AM | Unregistered CommenterPark lAne pete

@ Park. He weren't as bad as you are suggesting for ar5ena1 last season. And if Harry gets the best out of him, as he has the tendency to do with players then who cares how he was last season. We all know he is a top prem defender with bags of experience ignoring the controversy that comes along with him too. And wasnt' the whole french squad shit at the world cup? Wasn't Wayne Rooney shit at the world cup? Doesnt make him a shit player does it

Aug 20, 2010 at 4:05 AM | Unregistered CommenterMelvin

Stop being so short sighted and embrace it.

He's a good player.Better than Dawson and Bassong at least; has loads of at the top level, and knows what it takes to win.

I don't think that he will ever come close to Dawson or Bassong's best impressions of the "rabbit in your headlights" scenario against Young Boys.

We need a defender with his kind of mentality on the pitch. Somebody who always wears their heart on their sleeve.

COYS

Aug 20, 2010 at 4:23 AM | Unregistered CommenterAndrew

I am not usually too sentimental about this type of stuff, but I have to say that despite it sounding reasonable, signing Gallas would make me sick. It's a visceral thing, he captained the arse, I don't think I would find it in me to cheer for him. He's not spurs. Am I being too childish? I have to remain childish to a certain extent, football would be too boring if it was all about what makes sense and is most efficient...
