The things we said...

Gomes is a liability, no better than Paul Robinson

That boy Huddlestone is too fat and slow to be effective in central mid

Time for King to hang up his boots, he's spent. We can't accommodate him when he hardly ever plays

BAE is rubbish

Lennon has no end product. Can't cross, can't score

I'll be happy with 6th spot. Or 7th. Does 7th get us into Europe?

Modric is too small and light-weight for the EPL. He can't handle it

Sell Dawson back to Forest. He's Championship quality at best

Harry doesn't have it in him to take us to the next level

What is the point of Gareth Bale?

I saw Spooky outside White Hart Lane throwing frozen shit pellets at the Spurs shop

We're gonna get relegated

Reader Comments (60)

Brilliant. Only one i stand by is "BAE is rubbish"

He was shocking today. Love the banter with burnley fans and Modric's goal!

Does this mean we can expect more goals from him next season??

May 9, 2010 at 9:38 PM | Unregistered CommenterJimi

Modric has to improve his goal scoring ratio. Would make such a difference to our midfield if he does.

May 9, 2010 at 9:42 PM | Unregistered CommenterJep

Dear Editor,

Be Careful with your humour....

Its superb that we have made 4th...totally amazing but lets not carried away....KIng cant play Champs league and Prem FACT!!!

Dawson is not as good as we are all making him out to be...

We dont really have a World class Striker.

We are 4th and thats it at the moment...and remember JOL took us to 5th twice and then Harry has had to spend another £75mill to get us 1 more place....

Arsenal Chelsea and Manchesters will be stronger again next season...lets hope we are as well!!!

May 9, 2010 at 9:42 PM | Unregistered CommenterP

P - let's enjoy it while we can.

May 9, 2010 at 9:44 PM | Unregistered CommenterJep

All wrong except BAE Is Rubbish. He is fucking rubbish! Cost us the game today with his lazy attitude.

May 9, 2010 at 9:52 PM | Unregistered CommenterDJ

We are fickle but nonone wants to see anyone not perform well or be a flop.

BAE and Pav were rubbish and improved but appear to be heading back to their usual selves.

Thud is still ocassionally too slow, but you will never get a London bus to turn quickly. Someone once said that it is always the faster players who are out of position.

Dawson's passing is ocassionally Blue Square standard but persists in those 70 yard balls that sometimes come off.

Gomes has been excellent this season but anyone who kidds themselves that they don't secretly shit themselves everytime he goes charging for the ball is probably lying (credit where it is due we have stopped cheering him when it catches it).

Please can people stop saying "fact" to get their point across.

May 9, 2010 at 9:57 PM | Unregistered CommenterDD

the only time I'm shitting myself as regards the goalkeeping situation is whenever Gomes looks like he's about to come off the pitch. So long as he's out there, I'm sorted.

I would also tend to agree that BAE, while not completely shit, has frequent and disastrous lapses that often cost us games, kinda like how Dawson used to do, the difference being that he doesn't seem to give a shit when it happens.

May 9, 2010 at 10:06 PM | Unregistered Commenteryidbanker

Jermaine Defoe's first touch is actually not very good. Not really sure what's going on or why I've only just realised this.

May 9, 2010 at 10:13 PM | Unregistered CommenterFather Chrisman

Other fans/pundits say something wrong = 2000 word excoriating blog post. "SKY SPORTS 4 BIAS!!!". etc etc

You say something wrong = Hehe! What are we like! PS. let me rationalise that...

Same old same old.

May 9, 2010 at 10:13 PM | Unregistered CommenterBambino

4th place is a big achievement. Let's hope we'll reach the group stage of the CL. But this can't hide the fact that Hud is too slow and chickenhearted, that Modric's impact is too little comparing with that of Lampard, Gerrard, Fabregas, Van Persie, Rosicky, Scholes, Messi, Kaka, Totti, Pirlo just to mention some players of other teams and he is loosing more personal fights than winning and his pass accuracy this year was 38%, that Dawson and Corluca are too slow for a higher level and BAE is too crazy, that Defoe, Pav and Crouch can score only occasionally, that the team scores very few goals from the midfield players and that, in general, the team has a good level of quality but no winner's mentality. These facts must be acknowledged and corrected if we want to stay in the higher levels of team football.

May 9, 2010 at 10:19 PM | Unregistered CommenterIOANX

FACT; it is pointless to judge any player on the basis of today game. They’ve had Burnley in a headlock until they become aware of score at Arsenal, at which point they lifted it to make sure there would be no injuries. The rest of the game meant fooking nothing. As for the travelling fans, they should be content seeing excellent first half while it mattered. Greed is very dangerous and poisonous thing. Get rid of it ASAP, and start smelling roses.

This game is a warning to all my Fellow Spurs fans what can Happen when Teams go in that dark smelly dressing room Harry said he never seen this coming well you all now me and i must have inside information because i told my mate we would get beat if we had bean 3-0 up they would have let it go but smelling blood they went to the Physio and got charged up and the rest is in the score . So unless new laws come into play these second half shocks will happen next year and West Brom and Newcastle and god forbid the tangerines .will be shocking us again and one more word of warning you cant stop these shocks by buying more and more players we have bean beat by to teams relegated and in total they have taken five points of us and a cup appearance and before anyone starts saying i am mental well three players in Europe have bean caught and in the premier none so if like me you don't want to be left with a team with 83 goals conceded banging in 4 goals and inflicting one of the highest defeats on Spurs in another second half game then join me in stamping this Killer energy from the game . Or next year we could be sucked into another relegation dog fight these teams Beat us and drew Stoke Hull Burnley Wolves add West brom Newcastle they all came from the Championship is the only place a player failed a test for energy and all these teams came from there recently . My fans are hurting but not really bothered but this has made me very nervous for next year and i was optimistic because the team i Highlighted failed to prober but next year the money and the fear of going down will be even more intense with Blackburn West Brom Necastle Everton Birmingham Fulham Stoke and god forbid Blackpool will be Dishing out more shocks if the people who are trusted cant stamp this Second half surge in Energy we will have got fourth but i will have lost the battle and shocks will like today bring misery to us and others even if on paper we are a class above and should be a warning to all Spurs fans playing in the qualifiers will be hard even if we draw a team who are weaker because half time they get stronger. Welll done Spurs because i now how hard it really was the to claim the top four finish from the aptly Nicknamed Duracell Bunnies . Mad Sad Davspurs

They wanted it more than us! We finished fourth, beat the arse, chelski and city in the last couple of weeks. 3rd was never really on the cards. Our keeper was playing his first game of the season. Modric scored a screamer! We are playing CL football NEXT season. I think we have had a brilliant season, today we did what only Spurs can do, we've been there before. COYS.

Well done Tottenham - Would MUCH rather you done it than City anyways. Just 2 things to point out though from a fan of a side who've already spent a LOT of time in the CL (and won it in recent memory as well);

1:) You have a BIG shock coming with CL referees - they are totally different to even UEFA Cup/Whatever it is now referees in their interpretation of the rules so be prepared for more than a few totally mystifying (to you) decisions or bookings/sendings off that you just CAN'T understand from the men in Black.

2:) I wonder if Spurs having got INTO the Top 4 can HOLD ONTO it NEXT season? What with all their extra games (even WITH a bigger squad) as well as 3 rivals hell-bent on evicting them (one of whom are OLD masters at qualifying whatever happened this year, one of whom have limitless riches and another of whom have one of the game's best motivators in charge) AND in a World Cup year - CAN Spurs do what they did THIS season just gone and finish in the Top 4 again? THAT is the trick to REALLY ''Staying in the upper echelons of team football' as the poster above put it. Can Spurs pull it off? And don't forget - you WON'T have NO European Football and Early Cup KO's to concern you this time either.

Given that Spurs ONLY aimed for Fourth this year - Should aim higher!! AND the factors of ALL Thier opponents AND their extra games even IF they buy a few more players - I'd say they'll find it VERY hard to do so again (Remember Leeds, Newcastle and Everton?). But we shall see. Time will tell on that one as it always does. For now, well done and look forward to your games in the CL God Willing...................

May 10, 2010 at 12:15 AM | Unregistered CommenterSimon W

Agree that BAE remains an overall liability. His casual approach to the game, mental lapses and occasional recklessness will continue to cost matches in the future.

May 10, 2010 at 12:17 AM | Unregistered Commenterdocomospur

i think harry should take note of a few things today. Firstly our full backs are not good enough. Assou is terrible, a clumsy non team player who clearly doesnt give a shit, he has cost us many points this season. Replace or we wont progress in the champions league. Kaboul suffers lapses in concentration and will obviously not be first choice right back however corluka is not that good either. They need replacing, we need a new back up keeper, depending on cudicini of course. Alnwick is not good enough and it showed today. Also we need a world class striker, none of our forward players stood out today, none got to grips with the game or did anything worth pointing out and this is not for the first time this season. We could also do with a special midfielder as well. So in hindsight we need a left back, a right back, a keeper, a striker and a midfielder. And if woody is out then maybe a back up centre back as well. .

May 10, 2010 at 1:01 AM | Unregistered Commenterjj

Regardless of our assured league position before today's game, I would have expected the team and players to show a winning team mentality and not settle for losing a 2-0 lead against a relegated side!

If this is the attitude we show then we are not worthy of our posistion...every player for our team needs to want to win at all costs regardless of the fixture.

......also BAE can do one. No place in our team for that lazy and complacent attitude.

May 10, 2010 at 1:10 AM | Unregistered CommenterReto

Always prefer to win of course but can't say I am really bothered about today and I think that is a sign of the improvement of our club this year. Because the better your club does the less reason there is to make mountains out of mole hills - if the 'big picture' makes you smile there is less cause to focus on the small imperfections. So let Burnley have their day in the sun and I hope their fans enjoyed it. We just had our best season ever. Seems a fair trade off to me.

Good Lord, Spooky, what's going on? Who are these angry people showing up all of the sudden? I've got absolutely nothing against new comers (I was one myself not so long ago) and quite enjoyed the explosion of happiness from new posters that deluged the site after the man city win.

But since you posted a piece entitled "no knee jerking allowed," suddenly that's just about all we're seeing. The only names I recognize are the ones counseling perspective and sweet reason. For the rest, seems like some serious 'rhoid rage. Davspur, have you got some perspective on the phenomena?

Spooky, perhaps you can post a piece entitled "No peace, love and understanding allowed" and we can get back to normal?

May 10, 2010 at 4:48 AM | Unregistered Commenterziegemonster

Ooops, meant 'roid as in steroid. Though I suppose hemorrhoids could also explain excessive crankiness.

No sense in our guys getting injuries before the world cup, something burnley needn't worry about considering their squad doesn't have a single participant.

May 10, 2010 at 5:04 AM | Unregistered CommenterHarry

Meh, 4th and i think the team was just too tired in the 2nd half. You can imagine what went through their minds when they saw the Arsenal score "Oh, well, we tried...", Can't expect their morale to get boosted or anything. Plus Burnley did come out flying 2nd half, so fair credit to them, i'm still smiling! Next season? Well, however much the CL means, the PL must be our priority. Get into the group stages (tough qualifiers, but all beatable teams on our day). Play decent in the group stages and enjoy it, but keep focusing on the premier league. Joe Cole, YES! I think he would be an immense signing for us. We could push Bale back the LB and keep Modric in the middle and Cole on the left. Harry really should be busting his guts trying to sign him. RB, no thanks. Corluka and Kaboul are good players there (Hutton, Naughton and Walker ... still ours). BAE, good player, but Bale should be first choice. So, Sign a Joe Cole'ish player and a world class striker. We'll be set for next year :)

May 10, 2010 at 7:08 AM | Unregistered CommenterFaroespur

Wow. The euphoria and love in didn't last long, did it? My only negative take on things is a lack of a quality back up keeper (granted, Cudicini would have been ideal if he wasn't intent on emulating Evil Knievel) - Alnwick just isn't good enough. As for BAE, cannot beleive the negativity towards him. I had my doubts, but he has proved to be one of THE best full backs in the country - the occasional lack of concentration is a flaw I'll live with. Anyone old enough to remember the dross we've had at full back over the years should be grateful we've finally got a bit of quality. Keep Bale on the wing and Modric in the middle, I'll be happy with that.

In respect of the Burnley game; yes, we should't surrender a 2 goal lead (to anyone), but get over it. 4th the target, objective acheived - yes, this isn't the right attitude, we should want to win every game, blah blah blah.

Special praise to the Spurs fans yesterday who were outstanding. I was in the Burnley end opposite which gave me a different perspective than I usually get, and I got goosebumps!

May 10, 2010 at 10:11 AM | Unregistered Commenteryiddioyiddo

With you Yiddio, BAE is a very good and is much better than Bale at full back. The idiots on here do not mention that our worst player was probably Dawson yesterday, close on his heels were Thudd and Defoe. But I guess these are the same fools who love to state how bad Kaboul is (immense against City, Chels and Goons) and were the ones saying Lennon was useless and year or so ago!

We just finished 4th for Gods sake, no excuse for the defeat but overall a good season, get behind the teams you Divs!

May 10, 2010 at 10:44 AM | Unregistered CommenterOssie

Jeez, give the boys a break. I imagine it's difficult to play 90mins with the mother of all hangovers after Wednesday night.
Let's get a bit of perspective here; how many teams have finished in the top four recently? It's a cartel, we've finally cracked it and against some pretty stiff opposition (City, Villa, 'pool). Losing a meaningless match- and I'm sure we'd have smashed 'em if Arse were losing at half time- is exactly that: meaningless.
As for moaning that we haven't got players as good as Messi or Kaka... that is the most stupid thing I've ever heard. What are we expected to do? Go out and sign Ronaldo?
Like Faroespur says, let's qualify for the group stages and concentrate on making that top four spot our own. Do that for a couple of seasons and we'll be in a position to build an awesome team. In the meantime, let's just enjoy it, eh? Even Hansen and Shearer were very positive about our prospects on last night's MOTD. Hansen, positive about Spurs!

I've said elsewhere, the issue with the internet is that it acts as a tool for micro-analysing. We are all guilty of delving far too deep into things that do not need delving into.

Was the defeat a disappointment? Yes.
Does it matter? No.
Will it have a detrimental effect on our progress? LOLZ.

Some of the silly fans are so critical it's absolutely ridiculous. I'm still over the moon about beating Arsenal and Chelsea within 3 days and they beating City to claim 4th. We dream about those kinds of things happening to our club and wait a minute....IT DID! I think we've lost two games at home in 34, or 35 matches, stunning. We broke the top four monopoly which is something some of us never thought we would see. We've got a Manager who's won an award!!! We are so lucky....

Going forward we need to buy a world class centre back, Woodgate days could be numbered and King knees aren't going to get better unfortunately. Also a left back will do nicely and not to mention a reserve keeper after yesterday. Harry has built such a strong squad though, what a legend. Nobody gave us a shot with our run in and we proved everyone wrong, apart from maybe a few so called Spurs supporters/moaners who really need to have a reality check and think we should of won the league I expect! I didn't really care about yesterday's result.
We were coasting along at 2-0 then conceded a sloppy goal before half-time.
I have a suspicion the lads then found out that Arsenal were 3-0 up so went into relaxation mode.
There was nothing to play for from our perspective.
I don't see any point in picking out individual player issues etc. based on yesterday.
Kaboul & BAE had poor games, but only last week we were praising Kaboul for his performance against Bolton. Make your minds up people!!

I had the usual gooner fans saying "you think you're Champions League yet you lose to f'ing Burnley"
I just pointed out that it was last day of the season and our players were knackered and had nothing left to fight for.
Forgot to also point out that if we lost to Burnley and Arsenal lost to us, what makes them think they should be a CL team!

As for transfers - presumably Keane & Pav will now be sold.
That leaves Crouch, Defoe and possibly Eidur, so we need one/two top notch, experienced campaigners in.
Raul? Hmmmm..... nice idea even if only for one season.
Definitely need a new CB if Woody doesn't recover. We have adequate cover at RB but lack it at LB so that's a must.
Sandro should be joining, subject to work permit, so no need to cover CM with any additions. Bale & Kranjcar are fine for the left and then Lennon & Bentley on the wright.
Rumours of a move for SWP are a crap - his dad already advised against him joining us.
Joe Cole? Not sure.....

Transfer questions for the summer: Clearly some important things to resolve:

Who will provide back-up for Gomes who is of the right standard and yet is happy to warm the bench? Cudicini? Someone younger?

Is Corluka mobile enough to be our first choice right back? Do we rely on the two Kyles as back-up or do we need to replace Hutton with a similar attack-minded fullback? Does Kaboul have a future in this position given his better performances?

Given that our two first choice centre halves have long term injury problems, we need five top quality players in this position rather than four. Is Kaboul reliable enough to be a number 5?

Does BAE’s attitude merit continued first team selection? Who is our reserve left back if Bale plays further upfield?

What is Bale’s first choice position from now on – left back or left mid? Left mid leaves us short of a reserve left back.

Do we need one more creative midfielder in case of loss of Modric to injury?

Bentley to continue as understudy to Lennon?

What now for Robbie Keane? His recent quotes to the press hardly sound like he’s itching to get back.

What now for Super Pav? Commit or leave?

What now for Natural Viking Strength? Back to Monaco?

If all three leave, we are at least two strikers short. Bellamy plus one marquee signing?

Discuss!

May 10, 2010 at 1:20 PM | Unregistered Commenter555

I do think the result was a good one in the sense that the culture has to change at Spurs. Our vulnerability all year has been our performance against low table clubs. That's why out of all the final matches I was bricking Bolton. This year we showed that we were able to stand up to and defeat the top 3. We need to work on how we handle teams lower in the table next year. All positives though. We are improving. In the context of 2010 Sunday's result doesn't matter of course but going forward we can't tolerate it.
Call it knee-jerking if you like but because we are improving I feel that we have every right to demand more out of our club. Love your club with all your heart of course but demand more. That goes for supporters, players, managers, trainers and administrators. Fantastic incredible knee-jerk defying result this year. Smell the roses but every player on the club has to know that a new chapter is being written and a new benchmark will be set.
I believe that Arry, Levy and the squad understand this. To dare is to f%cking do!
COYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

May 10, 2010 at 2:05 PM | Unregistered Commenternycyid

555...indeed there are so many questions.

We need to have a 433/451 formation in our locker for the tough games and when we're backs to the wall....for that we need a proper physical target man who has pace, aerial threat, physical strength and an eye for goal (not asking too much). None of our current 4 (5 inc Keane) fits this bill. and 2 will have to leave to get another in...Keane & Pav?

OUT:
Hutton £6m
Jenas £7m
Pavlyuchenko £12m
O'Hara £6m
Keane £8m

Thats nearly £40m. With it we would need 1 quality striker, 1 back up creative midfielder and 1 box to box midfielder, 1 backup RB and 1 backup LB. With say £15-£20m war chest we could spend may £50-60m (AGAIN) and have a real top draw squad.

harry apprently wants one 'marquee signing' in the summer. hmmmm, we'll see. Expect him to sign some unknown instead for a couple of sheckles. We're gonna need all the money we can get to survive the building on new stadium. And levy's no mug (financially speaking of course - management and footballing wise there is still a case to be argued, even considering the this season all told).

tbf, if we went in started the next season with the squad we finished this one with we'd be in good shape. The more they play together the more liek a cohesive unit they looked. That was why we won the city game, they had the more expensive and (allg) 'better quality' players like for like. We played like a team.

Won't stop me speculating like the rest of us, Sandra is being wheeled out to help sign up Ibrahomivic, apperently she's offered to clean his house twice a month if he move's here, and Louise Redknapp will walk his labradooddles once a week. Jamie's holding back on offering a face transplant for tevez.

I love the phrase "War-chest".

Makes me think 'arry's off to do some dealing on the Russian black market and when the teams park the bus at the lane next season, he'll appear with a Blackhawk over the Paxton and start shooting.

Obviously the last dealings on the Russian black market gave us Pav, meaning the Blackhawk is probably going to be inconsistent and moan about being left on the tarmac, then demand a transfer to Afgan.

Oh, nearly forgot - Ramos out!

May 10, 2010 at 4:13 PM | Unregistered CommenterYiddogray

Devonshire - good analysis. It's easy to forget the likes of Hutton, O'Hara and Jenas who played little or no part in getting us to 4th and their value on the market. Or it was for me, anyway. That's a nice wedge to have going into this summer. Our box-to-box man may well be Sandro if he performs straight out of the tin (never seen him myself). I like the idea of new players arriving in a tin, or some kind of package like He-man used to be sold in...
As for up-front, it's at times like this I think back to Alan Sugar trapping Jurgen Klinsmann on his yacht until he signs up. Something like that would be great for next season. Proven world-class goal scorer, approaching the hill but not quite over it, still loads to offer...

May 10, 2010 at 4:24 PM | Unregistered Commenter555

yadda yadda yadda!
We're 4th, losers! Who cares about a last ditch effort at gaining 3rd, away to wretched Burnley, when Arsenal were all but nailed on to take it anyway?! I've never seen such an inconsequential result nor such an insignificant game for etiher side.
In other news- can anyone explain to me why on earth we're being linked to Raul?! Surely we're in no dire need of an overpaid, past his best, languid, not going to the world cup, never had any fucking pace to start with, massively egotistical striker when we've still got Robbie Keane?
