Fergie's Grudge - Why he keeps trying to nick our best players

There's a bit of noise about the place regarding Luka Modric as a potential transfer target for 'Yoonited.' Most of us can laugh this off as a bit of slow news day, pre-World Cup nonsense, but then we've been here before haven't we? Harry's been swift to nip it in the bud this time, although there are some that can't help asking why he would bother making a statement on something that is supposedly untrue. I guess the only way to kill the story is to get the chequebook and the specially engraved contract-signing pen and give the boy a bit of a raise. Just ask Gareth Bale.

But why is it always Fergie that comes batting his eyelids at our prize assets every year? Sheringham, Berbatov and Carrick succumbed to his wily charm just as we were starting to build a team around them, and we were a much weaker side for it. Yes the lure of playing for the self-appointed 'greatest team in the world' must be quite exciting for any professional. As is the chance to clock up a few medals to show the grandkids. But you rarely hear of Chelsea or Liverpool doing the same. At least with not such brazen consistency.

Well I think I've found the answer. Today I was ambling through youtube electronically jizzing my pants at various video compilations of our most recent season when I came across (figuratively, not electronically) an interview with 'Ol Red Nose talking about the talented Mr. Gascoigne. Besides being quite an interesting interview, if you watch to the end you might finally understand why Surralex is hell-bent on signing any decent player we manage to get hold of.

What a sad, bitter old man he is.

Good little find Spooky - but what about when we apparently tried to get him as manager - I think around the Shreeves era - if that deal went sour at the time for whatever reason, he is the exact type of bitter vindictive gut (or so it seems) to hold a grudge...

He hasn't spoken to the BBC for years, so there is more than a possibility ;-)

Fergie actually did have a soft spot for Spurs, unless he was being patronising with former remarks about our progression.

May 27, 2010 at 3:05 PM | Unregistered CommenterHazard

I'm at work and can't listen/watch the vid (i'm in an open plan office), would anyone be so kind as to highlight what he says?

May 27, 2010 at 3:07 PM | Unregistered CommenterSheffSpur

You're whining and crying like a little bitch about arguably the greatest manager of all time, and calling him sad and bitter, oh the irony!

May 27, 2010 at 3:09 PM | Unregistered CommenterDave

Is it just me or can you all see a link there somewhere cos I sure as hell cant lol So Im with you Sheffspur if anyone can kindly enlighten us with words please that would be lovely Ta :))

not worried about Luka to OT this window as I just don't think Harry will allow it even if they had enough cash to buy him anyway. Pay no attention to me though. I thought Keane, Carrick and Berbatov would stay at the lane too.

May 27, 2010 at 3:14 PM | Unregistered Commenterpl

Dave, so what. Is he above criticism?

May 27, 2010 at 3:14 PM | Unregistered CommenterAuthor of Comment

'Dave' - clearly you didn't register the slightly whimsical tone of this piece. No one is crying and whinging. It was an amused response to the interview I watched.
Now fuck off back up whatever hole you crawled out of

May 27, 2010 at 3:17 PM | Unregistered CommenterFox Mulder

Ferguson appears to be hurt and regretful that they never signed him, the fact he appeases himself by stating how Gazza himself has admitted he should have signed for Utd but that's using hindsight. If he went back in time he'd still probably sign for us. London attracted him, it was his personality. Whether Fergie could have toned it all down, we'll never know. I think he just feels hard done by because of the promise Gazza told him.

May 27, 2010 at 3:21 PM | Unregistered CommenterThe Machine

So easy to wind you lot up its not even a challenge! Thank you.

May 27, 2010 at 3:26 PM | Unregistered CommenterDave

Dave is quite obviously Fergie, such is his obsession, he will go to any lengths.

May 27, 2010 at 3:32 PM | Unregistered CommenterJep

Hmmm, yes they all look so wound up don't they Dave?
what are you doing on a spurs blog? nothing better to do eh?
You're just a shit UK Gold, a shit UK Gooooold!

May 27, 2010 at 3:33 PM | Unregistered CommenterWinterWeekend61

Yes Dave you got us all pretty good there. I've cancelled my internet subscription so that I can avoid any more of your cutting humour.

May 27, 2010 at 3:34 PM | Unregistered Commenteralt ctrl del

Ignoring the troll, anyone actually think he'd have done far better as a player and person (outside of football) had he joined Utd instead of us?

May 27, 2010 at 3:35 PM | Unregistered CommenterPLY

Look. It's a tactic that's used by all top teams on all teams below them. Nothing to do with vindictiveness, just part of the game really. By unsettling players in teams that are threatening the status quo, you're unsettling their respecive teams and hence reducing the threat of their team. If they manage to keep their stars, then they may not play as well having their head turned by the prospect of playing for the champions, the top 4, the wad, the chance to play in the Champions League, Europe, the Prem, the Coca Cola Championship etc etc.

I look forward to the day that we employ such tactics. Pienaar etc don't count do they as they're not what one would immediately describe as world class. When we do get there though, and it so happens manure are one of those teams, I'll be a lickin my chops at the turn of events.

Not sure the original author was being completely serious with this.

May 27, 2010 at 3:43 PM | Unregistered CommenterThe Machine

Dave, you're a comedy genius mate.

I haven't laughed that hard since I heard how much interest you have to pay on the Glaziers 700 million debt. No wait, it was when I heard United had only turned a profit last year because of the sale of Ronaldo. Hang on, I remember now, it was when we sold you Berbaflop for 30 million.

Ah hell, you guys are just funny, could you perform at my son's bar mitzvah?

Looking at Baconface's turkey-neck there I'm expecting another head to pop-up Hitchhiker's style.

May 27, 2010 at 3:57 PM | Unregistered CommenterWinterWeekend61

It's pretty much common knowledge that if Gazza had signed for Utd instead of Spurs, the whole destiny of mankind would have been drastically altered.

Aside from Maradonna and Messi, Gazza is the most naturally talented player I have ever seen, and much as I hate to say it, his career would have been very different had SAF got hold of him and given him the Giggs treatment. He would have been the father figure that Gazza so blatantly has needed for all these years.

May 27, 2010 at 4:16 PM | Unregistered Commenterchrisman

At the end of the day, Fergies no gentleman, never has been, never will be. He has issuses he should have dealt with years ago. The best person he should sigh would be a good shrink for himself.

May 27, 2010 at 4:27 PM | Unregistered Commentermickey

Yeah Dave, it's an easy mistake to make. "Slightly whimsical" meaning, "let me hide my blog in a cloak of irony, so that I never actually have to be held accountable for anything I write, and can claim to be being serious or joking as and when it suits". Clever innit?

Actually, no it's not, It's an unfunny, deleterious anti-intellectual project that would have Spooky shit his pants if someone did similar Sky Sports News. But we won't mention that. There's no introspection here, just lambasting anyone and everything with no consideration of the (il)logic or hypocrisy involved. That's why he keeps this weak shit for the delectation his little coterie of sycophants.

"Now fuck off". Absolutely fucking risible.

May 27, 2010 at 4:32 PM | Unregistered Commenterlucifer

Chrisman: Gazza's an Alcoholic and would have been an Alcoholic at Manure as he was at Lazio, Rangers and Everton. Saf's arm around him wouldn't have mattered a jot. Getting back to Manure robbing our best players, it just goes to show how the bigger clubs bought their success over the last ten years. As soon as spurs started to 'get a grip' it was snatched by Manure. Teddy won them the EPL and the ECL. It makes me laugh that their greed led them in to the arms of the Glazier family. Their now are in a situation where they risk loosing THEIR best players to clubs with money to spend. Fuck me I'm so happy. As I have said before on this site. 'The top three better watch out - Arry is coming to get you.

Fergie shook hands on a deal to become Spurs manager in 1986 , but then proceeded to joined United instead.

lucifer. If you don't like the blog then don't read it.
It's a tongue in cheek observation. Nothing more.
As was my fake Gudjohnsen Daily Star entry a few weeks ago.
Let the news sites report facts. Blogs are for opinion and creative observation.

Don't get your frilly panties in a twist.

"If you don't like the blog then don't read it."

Hilarious. You'll be practising as you preach with regards to every other media outlet that has the temerity to say something you don't agree with then? Of course not, cos then you'd have nothing left to write about.

"Blogs are for opinion and creative observation."

Perhaps, perhaps not. What that fatuous non-observation conveniently elides is that "opinion" and "creative observation" can be fucking useless too.

Roll on the world cup, it just may shut up the rubbish stories (yes I know im reading them and responding with even more drivel) I just as fed up as you lot I want football and i want it now.

May 27, 2010 at 5:10 PM | Unregistered Commenterspursforme

As much as I'd like to continue this...ahem...debate sir, it would be rather unfair of me to help clog up this comments page with boring tit for tat. A lot of people read DML and I doubt they care much for this conversation which has little to do with Spurs, or even football at all.

Apologies to Spooky and all others for feeding the troll.

May 27, 2010 at 5:15 PM | Unregistered CommenterFox Mulder

No need to feed it, It's already eaten an evil dictionary and appears to be shitting it out in riddles.

May 27, 2010 at 5:22 PM | Unregistered CommenterWinterWeekend61

i think fergie 'bigging us up' at the end of last season was some kind of long-range mind game, the effect of which probably wont be felt for a couple of years at least.

May 27, 2010 at 5:31 PM | Unregistered Commenterchrisman

If you see another team as a threat, and you have the resources and the attraction of a very big club, you sign the threat's best players, whether or not you really want them. That's what I think is going on.

May 27, 2010 at 5:35 PM | Unregistered CommenterIain

As Iain says, Fergie has a history of buying players that weaken teams around ManU (even if they don't strengthen themselves) and even buying certain players just to stop other teams getting them. To be expected if you have the resources at your disposal to play that type of game.

As for Gazza - he's a bi-polar alcoholic - I've yet to hear any doctors prescribe a 5-year contract with ManU as a cure!

May 27, 2010 at 5:56 PM | Unregistered CommenterNayim

So Gazza told Fergie he'd be joining ManU and then didn't. Tsk tsk. About as reliable as...oh...I dunno...George Best maybe. Don't blame the old sod for trying to nick our best players. Shows we're on the right track and is a backhanded compliment. But now we have the lure of CL football, can't see too many - or any - key departues. Unless we get ko'd in the qualifier - way before the transfer window closes - and then watch the vultures start circling...

May 27, 2010 at 7:09 PM | Unregistered Commenteryidbanker

I dont understand why that 99% of summer transfer rumors get laughed off as newspaper rubbish, but when United is involved with Spurs players its taken as the Gospel truth. Nevermind the fact that United have been linked with about 45 players since the end of the season, (and probably won't be getting any of them, unless the club is willing to accept Tampa Bay Buccaneers hats and t-shirts)

May 27, 2010 at 9:43 PM | Unregistered CommenterDrew Vader

Has anybody else but red nose heard Gazza say he should've joined united ? But Gazza told me himself that lucifer is as big a cunt as fergi.

May 27, 2010 at 9:57 PM | Unregistered CommenterSpurs LA

The difference now though Im sure,if now was two year ago, when Spurs had the famous director of Football, Modric would have been sold buy now. Comolli remit was buy enough cheap, sell the good ones dear. Carrick Berbatov were sold at a decent profit, though for all that i would much prefer them to be still playing in a spurs shirt.

Now though it is different. We have a manager who is ambitious, knows how to put teams together, gets them playing good winning football with steel and who the players respect and love playing for. If Redknapp says players aren't for sale, Bacon Face realizes there not
