Memories

Casual musings for a Friday afternoon, as I guess most of you are out of the office already, and down the pub downing a few, in what looks to be another decent start to the weekend. I'm stuck indoors, with the newborn, not yet had the chance to review the days headlines (or lack of) and what players (other than Richards) we're being linked with. Although I'm keeping a curious eye on City and their targets, and whether players from the continent, who play seasoned CL football, take a plunge - for the project and not for the money - and sign for the Eastland's outfit. Six/seven forwards on their books, hoping none of their rejects make their way to the Lane.

Back to the casual chit-chat. Earliest memories of supporting Spurs? Mine, are:

1980, Ipswich at home. I think John Wark scored a penalty at both ends, we lost 2-0. Upper east stand towards the Paxton End, and I remember an Ipswich fan sitting next to me with his dad. I was a wee kid, obviously. Might have been my first game actually, and I'm fairly certain I feel asleep for a period of time just after the second half. Boring boring Spurs.

1980, running outside into the back garden to re-enact Brookings goal for West Ham v Arsenal, moments after it was scored. Picture-perfect memory. Wasn't too fussed about the Hammers, but seemed to have a natural instinct to enjoy the misery inflicted on the red scum.

1981 Cup Final. Both games. I remember these vividly, including the interview Keith gave re: Villa and his performance, and the conundrum over whether he would play in the replay. Like it was yesterday.

1982 Milk Cup final. Not sure this was on tv, remember listening to it on the radio with my uncle.

Showing my age no doubt.

1979 I think. Norwich at home - lost 3-2. I was sat in the Paxton upper tier with my Dad and it was all set to finish 2-2 when in the last minute John Deehan brought the ball down with his hand and then slammed it in, no doubt providing ample proof to Thierry Henry that cheaters do indeed prosper. Bastard.

Started properly going in 1981 and visited Wembley seven times in my first eighteen months with Spurs. The 82 Milk Cup Final was the first time Spurs had lost at Wembley and I bawled my eyes out. Archibald missed a sitter to take us 2-0 up.

Having been born and raised in the north of Scotland, most of my early football memories are of my dad taking me to watch our local side, St Johnstone, in the Scottish 2nd division in the mid to late eighties. Trips south of the border to see the Spurs were limited to one or two a season.

I particularly remember going to Hillsborough for the first game of the 94/95 season, when Klinsmann made his debut. We were 2-0 up at half-time (Sheringham & Anderton with the goals). Wednesday pulled it back to 2-2 early in the second half before Barmby and then Klinsmann restored our advantage (marked with the first ever appearance of that "dive" celebration). Klinsmann was then stretchered off with an oxygen mask strapped to his face before Wednesday pulled another one back late on. Fantastic game.

My mum taped Match of the Day for me so I could watch it all again when I got home, but I was gutted to discover that BBC Scotland had decided not to show any highlights of the game! I was so annoyed that I wrote to the BBC to ask them what I was paying my licence fee for (or not, as I was only 12 at the time) and they replied with a video of the whole game, unedited. I still have it and give it a viewing every now and then.

dam spooks. I had you down as younger than that.

prob in summer 1988, my uncle had shit loads of footballl videos, i spent 2 weeks pretty much watching spurs '6 of the best' (6 best games from the 80s) about 5 times a day. The 2 moments that stuck with me were magic goals from Hoddle v watford (the turn and chip) and v oxford (shimmie round 2 players and round keeper). I would highly reccomend that video if you want to turn an impressionable 6 year old into a spurs fan.

razor - wicked story. What a game to have gone to...and you demanded and got your own personal video? mega-whoosh

Sneaking in to the Bricklayers with my Grandfather before Forest at home 80/81 season...Hoddle and Crooks scored

81 cup final with my grandfather

More recently:

Villa at ours for the 125 yr game was the first game my missus came to after moving from the US.

Bolton at home a few weeks ago was my son's first game at 6 and a half months, gotta say that I shed a tear looking at the ground I have had so many memories of.

Having a drug addled youth doesn't help with the old memories I'm afraid. 1982 Cup Final day I was wrecked after a few chillums of Durban Poison and missed my lift (with ticket) to Wembley - no mobile phones in those days. Had to watch the whole thing on TV while my brain bubbled inside my head. Happy days.

I wouldn't necessarily not take *ALL* of their rejects. I'd love to see Tevez playing for us.

5-1 in the semi against Arsenal. An electrifying night and an incredible scoreline

i think mine was when i was 6, and saw us v lazio at the lane and it ended 2-2. i remember jamie rednapp scoring sum quality bicycle kick and the atmosphere that i would later on learn to become ledgendary

Earliest memory... my dad scaring the SHIT out of me when Gazza's free kick went in against the Arse. Was watching on telly with him. Blearing my eyes out for 20 minutes after that!

May 28, 2010 at 6:14 PM | Unregistered CommenterLethal Pizzle

Few different memories (not first I'm afraid)

Archibald Crooks away debut at Crystal Palace - we won 4-3! Brilliant.

5-1 win at the Old Den. Top performance by Gascoigne (and Paul Stewart). Their fans clapped our players off the field - excellent sportsmanship. Their fans then threw bricks at us afterwards as we left. Not so good!

Losing 6-1 away to Bolton in a cup match. Should have been 7, the ball crossed the line before Walker clawed it back - we were all saying it was in to the ref! Shocking.

Totally different tack...

European transfer window does not officially open until the 9th May. Domestic has already. The fireworks will start then!? Not sure about the transfers that have gone through so far.

http://www.thefa.com/TheFA/NewsAndFeatures/2010/transfer-window-060510

Have a good weekend.

May 28, 2010 at 6:36 PM | Unregistered Commenterhoopspur

Oh another couple of memories. Us beating Derby County at home with a Gascoigne hatrick. Last one a 30+ yard freekick which he told Shilton where he was going to put it before he took it. And did!

Maradona and Hoddle for Spurs in Ardiles testamonial.

May 28, 2010 at 6:38 PM | Unregistered Commenterhoopspur

Last one.

Truro City 0 Spurs 7. Official opening of their floodlights in about '76 or '77. Peter Taylor was brilliant.

May 28, 2010 at 6:40 PM | Unregistered Commenterhoopspur

blimey, you lot are a load of young 'uns! 1967 Cup Final - Frank Saul and Jimmy Roberston, first game I attended, funilly enough was at Stamford Bridge in about 1970. A drab goaless draw..

first game at the Lane another 0-0, this time with Bristol City in the relgation season. Then a 2-0 home win against Stoke not long after. From then on I went regularly. In the second division season I went to nearly all the home games and a lot of the away games too, including an epic trip to Blackpool and a really scary trip to Ninian Park

May 28, 2010 at 7:11 PM | Unregistered CommenterHods Cods

Early memories: 1967 cup final on telly. First real game in 1969 at home to Chelsea. One of Greavsie's last games. 1971-ish away to Chelsea when we were under that funny seating stand they had in the corner, which got closed down afterwards because it apparently shook rather unnervingly during the game. Gulp!

May 28, 2010 at 7:41 PM | Unregistered CommenterRoman's Interpreter

I was born into a football hating family and should have been a Crystal Palace fan as I was raised a mile from Selhurst Park (no wonder the family hated footy). However, after taking some stick from other kids at school for not following a team I decided to sit down and watch the 1987 FA cup final. There was no way I was gonna pick Coventry so I picked Spurs, then we lost. I've stuck with them ever since.

Perhaps it should have been a sign of the pain I was going to go through for 20 odd years, but I'd say it was worth it. Just.

80/81 hoddles goal against forest, hoddles goal v watford still makes me dribble in my pants, hoddles last ever goal against oxford - beautiful, amazing , poetic and totally fitting for the man who will always be my idol , we also share the same birthday and i have loved that since 1980. going to wembley 81/82 replays on a thursday night and all , winning at anfield for the first time in 722 years, thank you crooksy, tony parks made me ball my eyes out in 84 and i think it was that moment when i realised just how much i loved the club.linekers first 2 goals at carrow rd- we waited a while for those beauties, ossie 4 being ossie , stevie we'll take more care of u archibald, hillsboro for our semi final with wolves was my first semi and will never be forgotten, especially as we arrived 4 minutes late just as we scored - AMAZING. Still hate terry hibbet! Watford at villa park was also a bit spesh, dont forget the song of that day.. Stayed in the wine bar u stayed in the wine bar , poor old gary plumley! Clive allen for being unbelievable even if it was for only 1 season, gazza at wembley, ginola everywhere , finding out that we had signed Klinsman reading the back page of the evening standard. I started supporting spurs last season because they have a cool name. This soccer lark is quite a thing.

This is gonna get loads of respnses... My family were all Spurs, my mum's sister even married a player who graced the pitch in the 80's... my grandad was soooo happy!! Quality, we used to get free tickets to many a game and even had access to the players lounge, I used to take it all for granted back then, I was young and just saw Tottenham as an extension to the family. My first season that I really remember is 87, oh how I cried after that Cup Final. I remember walking to school crying when Waddle left. I remember being at the game against Oxford when Hoddle scored that goal... it was in slow mo the way he took that ball into the back of the net. I also remember Hoddle on tv's Saturday Superstore confirming he was leaving... had the right hump but I did love that Sarah Green bird. I remember Venables (in 88 or was it 89) coming over and thnking we were gonna win trophies left, right and. Signing Lineker and Gazza... ooooh that gave me goose bumps. Loved razor Ruddock. Loved Pat van den hauwe say oooh pat van den hauwe. Remember having a spare ticket for Sheff Wed on Klinnsmann's debut... went up there with my grandad and he said we would give it to someone who looked like they deserved it... we saw some bloke (spurs fan) with a limp before the game trudging around looking for a ticket... my grandad gave it to him and said he could have it for nothing as long as it brought us good luck, the bloke hugged us and started crying, he had a sad story but can't remember the details... I'll never forget that game and the dive cele. Could go on 4 ever... I love you Tottenham Hotspur.

You say you have a newborn Spooky... congrats mate, my misses is due in August... start of the season! I said at x-mas that 2010 would be the year Spurs get Champions League football, England win the World Cup... and I have a baby boy. We know it's a boy (my misses insisted we find out so I can decorate the room) and I'm gonna call him Harry. I always liked the name Harry!!!!!!! He's Harry for different reasons but I'll tell him it's after Redknapp...hee, hee.

not my first but for sheer entertainment value, Spurs 5 Ipswich 3 (i think, 1981). What a (night) game. Scorers: hoddle, archibald, crooks, ardiles & perryman. I might have got that wrong.Ipswich had a goal chalked off. Eric Gates got sent off...

May 28, 2010 at 10:59 PM | Unregistered CommenterR-Man

My first memory of Spurs was in 1987 when football used to be on ITV on a Sunday afternoon. Chris Waddle scored the only goal in a 1-0 victory against Liverpool. Without an adult to influence my footballing destiny, that was the day I fell in love with Tottenham Hotspur.

My first live game was in 1991, after the FA Cup Final win, last game of the season at Old Trafford. Both teams paraded their trophies pre-kick off (Man U Cup Winners Cup). John Hendry scored our only goal in a 1-1 draw. That was to be the first of many fruitless journies to OT................

...ctd..after Graham Roberts gave him the treatment. Robbo got away with it. Also the easter monday masscre of Ar5en0l. Again,i might be wrong but i think Chris Hughton 2 Mark Falco 1 m& Alan Brazil 2. I absolutely loved it. archibald played in midfield that day.

Also, took yiddioyiddo jnr to his first games this season - away trips to Blackburn and Burnley. 2 years old, and his first memory of football is Peter Crouch bearing down towards the Spurs fans and firing home.............he's had nightmares ever since.

The first game ever attended even tho lost to chelsea 1-0 at home was a great experience in 1970. Last game of the season that got relegated to second division still remember it like it was yesterday and the first game Ardiles and Villa played at forest was a great day. Man this can go on for ever

1981 cup final replay I was ten years old and someone offered my dad £100 for his ticket before he game , a lot of money back then but he declined , I cried when both man city goals went in and cried with joy when Ricky won it - its hard work being a spurs fan but wouldnt miss it for the world - hoddle ,waddle gazza, lineker the list goes one.....

NEWSFLASH:

Very trendy NY arthouse rockers just appeared playing a very cool record on Jools Holland and the drummer was wearing a Tottenham shirt. We've arrived. We're the zeitgeist again.

My memories are all of the early 80's but the peach must be: me, level with the pitch at Highbury, circa 83?we're spanking them 3-1 and a gorgeous streaker does her thing just as Micky Hazard is about to lay the ball off, instead the ref blows up, and Micky not 10 yards from me puts his foot on the ball and has a right oggle.

I haven't yet met anyone who confirm that this near perfect scene wasn't a dream. If anyone else witnessed this, my psychiatrist would be very interested.

My first game, spurs v forest 16/8/80. It begins.
Hanging on the fence by the Paxton/ Shelf corner pin. Hoddle comes and takes a corner, gives me a wink. My first game and Hoddle, genius, the man for whom the word gifted is an understatement, winks at me 'yes, I'll drop this corner on the penalty spot just as you asked' and he did. Just met Ricky Villa tonight, special memories of tonight and the goal. THE GOAL. And the night it was scored... Touched my older than me teenage girlfriends
ladybits that night. Double whammy. Happy days.

re. Johnny cheshunt. I was there, also level with pitch. We took the piss that day.Sadly,i don't remember the streaker, as i was probably in shock of an audacious piece of dragback skill that paul "windy" miller performed to taunt tony woodcock in

ctd..our penalty area.if you remember Windy, then you wouldn't have expected that. He had obviously been taking extra hoddle lessons in training that week.

That '82 Milk Cup Final was a bloody steal, we should have held on to beat 'em. We met Bobby Charlton in the bar at Wembley pre game and had a conversation with him about the impending World Cup. He correctly predicted quarter finals and no further. I'm still impressed by his accuracy and the reasoning he gave.

Best memory for me though was Tony's save in '84 and the Paxton going mental. Got home around 5am and my then wife also went mental!!
