Another derby, another win, another DVD

The month of April. Legend has it that it was birthed in the very depths of hell. A fixture list carved out into the back of a damned soul with the blood of virgins inked into the finger nails of Satan.

Arsenal.
Chelsea.
Man Utd.

Two played. Six points. We never beat the big teams. We always bottle it. Stick it up your bollix. Again.

To dare is to f*cking do and we're f*cking doing it. Did I expect it to be this convincing? Or course not. My pre-match concerns bottled into a single assumption which was thinking today would be a little like last Wednesday. Back to the walls, pressure and pressing and counter attacking the ingredients for survival. We'll run out of steam, we all said. No Wilson again? We'll be ruined in midfield. Er. Not quite.

Instead today was altogether a completely different ilk of game. One of swaggering style, sexy and slick, covered in a glossing of grit. A performance of supreme confidence and belief. Absolutely magnificent.

Chelsea have hiccuped away from home a few times this season, and perhaps the pressure got to them today. That's up for debate, no doubt something their fans can talk about. What is beyond debate is that Tottenham got to them.

I f*cking love this club for keeping me eternally entertained.

Wednesday, we beat the pretenders, dicking Arsenal and ending their season. Saturday we beat the real deal, continuing our resurgence against Chelsea by damaging theirs. Three point Lane? Bogey team no more. It's so quiet, it's so quiet, it's so quiet over there.

City lose to a 93rd minute Utd winner and 4th spot twists back into our favour.

Injury and selection issues? Lack of true depth in squad? Fallacies. Heart and desire, intent and control. Tempo made in N17. We've had it all season long, disappointed at times, but in the past two games - when it mattered the most we brought it to the table. Just hope we can do the same against the likes of Bolton and Burnley.

Bale was awesome. Just awesome. What. A. Player. Brilliant goal. Dawson immense. In front of Fabio. Modric in the middle. He  can't play there, can he? Hehe.

Terry red-carded, a delight. Couldn't happen to a nicer bloke. 2-1 was - and I'm pinching myself - not a justifiable scoreline. Should have scored more. Would have been done and dusted long before Lampard’s consolation. Roman guilty of a sitter. Bale and Defoe had efforts.  Bentley's brilliant lob sublime.

Talking of JD. Glad he's got it (penalty) out of his system.

Spurs. Title contenders? Of course not. Title influencers? Aye. Champions League front runners? This week. Yes. Makes you wonder. Had we won through into the Cup final, would the hunger and focus in the league have been this great? Whatever Harry is doing I applaud. The players also deserve the utmost credit for the way we've gone from slipping all over the Wembley pitch to flying amongst the clouds.

We were fantastic. On and off the pitch. Top class. Can't wait to listen to Hansen on MotD tonight. Spurs will always let you down, won't they Alan?

/gloat

Only one team in London. Four days. Two DVDs.

More later when I've stopped dancing on the rooftops.

A really enjoyable afternoon, can't wait until next weekend, is it possible to play manu tomorrow?

Apr 17, 2010 at 10:52 PM | Unregistered Commentericespur

Absolute sublime performance! I think we should request of FA to change playing schedule from once a week to two games per week. It seems that we are thriving in such tempo. Like a fish in the water.

Also hope that “Harry Out” crowd sailed away with their heads hung in shame.

We raped Chelsea today, raped them. Could have scored 4 or 5.

Apr 17, 2010 at 11:01 PM | Unregistered CommenterFranco the Marvo

Absolutely top class performance from the lads. They made the league leaders look nothing more than a Championship team. How we didn't finish this game with a higher goal margin has to be one of the wonders of this world.

Pav was guilty of a few.

Apr 17, 2010 at 11:08 PM | Unregistered CommenterFranco the Marvo

the Harry Out crowd? they'll just fester like an in-grown toenail, only making themselves known once there's been another bump or two.

Watching it on TV, I could distinctly hear TERRY YOU PRICK at least twice. Good stuff lads, couldn't have said it better myself. What. A. Fucking. Dog. I don't know how a 28 year old athlete manages to look older than my dad, but there you go. How I howled for blood when he brought down both Defoe and Bale, and how I hooted when he was finally sent off. I know there's a special reserve of bile dedicated to a few specific players, but for me John fookin' Terry is the Beast of Babylon in a chav's shirt.

Is it just me or does Good Johnny seem to run around like someone 10 years younger? I like him, andn ot just because he's so dead handsome. I'd let him have me though, I really would.

Apr 17, 2010 at 11:10 PM | Unregistered Commenterjewbanker

If they have any class, they would make a single DVD featuring both games. "Demolition Derbies"... well, the title has no class but anyway... Those "Harry out" people can put their straight jackets back on... Bale is unstoppable. I also admit, that I have previously not had confidence in Modders playing centre - well,...HE IS BACK, and shoving my words down my throat. Wow. He is in his element, and you can tell that he is loving it. Man U will be tougher though....

Apr 17, 2010 at 11:10 PM | Unregistered CommenterTonyTott

Hansen was very pro-Spurs tonight.

You know, cause he didn't speak a single word.

Inspired risk-taking substitutions yet again by the gaffer! Well done, guv.

Hansen and Shearer (sigh) were more concerned with Terry deciding to lose form right before a World Cup (and potentially his last - or at least should be...) Now that probably wasn't hand ball, but he got away with an actual handball against Bolton last week - he didn't learn. Why does this not happen to any other defender?

Apr 17, 2010 at 11:18 PM | Unregistered CommenterTonyTott

All the concern about Palacios being suspended (me included) - I cant see him getting back in the team for ManU next week.

Be great if Lennon is back though - him and Bale will run them ragged.

I hope Corluka gets back soon - Kaboul is not a right back.

It has been great being a spurs fan these past few days. Bale looks awesome at the moment. But the overall team performance is what is so good. Dawson for England? Hell yeah. To dare is to fecking do!! COYS

I just remembered that earlier on today, I saw a guy in a Spurs shirt walking down Blackstock Road (that's deepest Arsenal territory for those Spurs fans from afar - round the corner from the Arsenal shop!). At first I thought, "Good on you son!", then I thought, "You must have balls of steel!". Then I thought, "Maybe you have just escaped from the lunatic asylum!" - given that Spurs had just beaten Arsenal! After all of that, I just took it as a good omen for the Chelsea game....and it was! But I also think that this is a show of the resurgence of pride in our club! COYS!

Not tactically astute they said. Can't defeat the big teams they said. Harry really is stuffing it back down people's throats.

The players have really impressed me. Huddlestone, Modric, Dawson - all just immense. Too much to ask to go to OT and take all three points? We owe those mancs big time.

All four experts on ssn said we'd lose and Charlie Nicholas didn't have the bollox to even turn up - what a cunt that man is.

On football focus when mark lawrenson was asked if spurs could beat chelsea today, before the presenter had even finished the question the sad prick said absolutely bluntly and emphatically NO - another cunt on the box.

And lastly where's all the goons who said we'd get battered today - getting ready to sing we're by far the greatest team at Wigan tmoz I guess.

Arsenal fans will reappear next time we lose a game and gloat about us not being good enough and stating 'same old Tottenham' and yet after two massive wins you'd struggle to find one to have a conversation with.

We battered Chelsea today. Fucking battered them.

How odd that Hansen said zip all on MOTD tonight. I thought it was just him lost for words with spurs' performance but he barely said a word in the whole show.

A vast improvement in my opinion

Apr 18, 2010 at 12:19 AM | Unregistered Commenternellis

Great article 'Spooky'
Never before can I remember a performance, no 2 performances so brilliant from a Spurs team supposedly bereft of fit players. They were 'to a man' just brilliant. I cannot believe that they are playing like champions and when Palacious got his yellow card last Sunday my heart sank. But Hudd has shown urgency and today that mean streal I didn't know he had in him. He snarled and ran and then held the midfield and passed the ball like a trojan. Modric, can he play centeral midfield - Yeeess he can, like a magical little wizard. Bale must be worth a fortune. Pav is a brilliant partner for Defoe and that defence looked as sound as I've seen at WHL ever and I'm going there since 1978. Please, Please lads give Man U a game the will remember. I'm so happy.

You and others need to re-evaluate your opinion that Harry is just a man-manager. Far more went into the preparation for those 2 games than arms around shoulders.

I sit in block D east upper, and normally the crowd up here is quiet, with one fan in front of me, blocks his ears when I let loose, but against Le Arse and the chavs, every one was singing and encouriging our team like never before, the atmosphere was electric, even the west stand was rocking, brilliant.

No team plays like ours has over the last few days unless they have a great spirit... And that comes from the top. People called it luck, people said that anyone could get a win from such a talented bunch of players... Well, it wasn't people that have created the bond we see between the team at Spurs, it's Mr H Redknapp. Take a f**king bow. I feel the spirt of 61' coursing through these boys.

Apr 18, 2010 at 1:43 AM | Unregistered CommenterMes

We battered chelsea today - even better performance than the great night against the gooners.

Harry is slowly replacing the old spurs ways of bottling it with the even older spurs way of winning and winning well.

The entire team won their battles today and Bale, Dawson, and Modric were exceptional.

Apr 18, 2010 at 1:50 AM | Unregistered CommenterOllie

Spooky, I am looking forward to the Bale song. Actually, nothing can bring me down right now. I'd be looking forward to a root canal so bright is my mood.

I don't want to get ahead of myself (but I will) but is anyone else having the odd quiet moment when your mind starts drifting to next season? I know I should be focussed on this season, and I am, but I can't help but having a sneaky dream about next year. I was honestly a bit worried about being out of our depth in the CL if we made it, and what fighting on 4 fronts would mean to overall results. But no more...

Imagine if everyone was fit.
Imagine the options.
Imagine the cover.
Imagine the proper deadwood we can chainsaw the fuck out of this summer, and probably make a dash of cash from.
Imagine if Sandro is half as good as we hope.
Imagine only needing to tinker with the squad for a change - local anaesthetic instead of the usual quadruple bypass and half the season in recovery, rehab and all the parts getting to know how to work together again.
Imagine Bale and Lennon left and right spreading and stretching defences all over Europe with Modders/Hudd/Palacios/Niko tearing through the middle. A midfield feeding, nay, FORCE FUCKING FEEDING Defoe and SuperPav as if they are French ducks growing me a fat-as foie gras.
Imagine seeing our forwards receiving the sort of service usually only seen at a Michelin 3 star.

Apparently it's supposed to be the darkest before dawn. I just never actually realised or believed it would be Harry that was delivered with my milk and morning paper. Juande, sure, Jol, yep, but Harry? Nah, but so what, I was fucking wrong!

Fuck all the doubters. Fuck Sky Sports4. Fuck the status quo. Fuck respect. I can't wait for next weekend. Nothing to lose. Rip 'em apart or die trying. They owe us, I feel revenge for the Mendes goal in the offing!

Wonderful and Fantabulous! Perfect combination of results. Cannot be too critical as this was a very very good performance.

But:-

1. We got lucky. Drogba injured (his comedic timing, coming just after they used all their substitutes, was hilarious), it took them 45 mins to realise Bale was a danger, and they basically imploded. They could afford to lose one game. Other teams might not do that.

2. Kaboul, Bentley and Pav need to improve. Against more motivated and focussed teams, we would get punished for misses and mistakes.

3. I look at Bolton's fightback and Burnley's determination and cannot help but worry about complacency. If we won because we were galvanised after the sense of injustice over the FA Semi loss, then we cannot now assume we would beat both of them.

HR, whatever bitter pill or dollop of grit and determination that has been put in their tea recently, please continue in the same dosage.

4. We were helped by the referee. Cannot see us getting such fair treatment from someone like H Webb.

City seem like "flat-track bullies". They seem to batter the weaker teams, but always lose to the better organised teams. Difficult to come to any conclusion about Man U. I had written off Giggs, Scholes and Neville, but was proved wrong. Hard to see a victory for us at OT, but would be delighted if proved wrong.

Many of you were so greatful for being Spuds these past few days just because u beat arsenal and Chelsea once in a millenium. Now imagin how great these last 10 years would feel if you were gunners.

Good luck for manure game.

We'll run out of steam, we all said. No Wilson again? We'll be ruined in midfield. Er. Not quite.

I was saying this and I have just LOVED being proven wrong. Here's the sexy football I fell in love with. I also had the luck of watching the Chelsea game on a Spanish channel where the announcers made it a point to praise Dawson often, which definitely warmed my heart. April is the cruelest month? For other teams, at this point.

A lot of people were worried that we were without Sargent Wilson in the middle. Well up stepped the General Modric. Two sublime performances in his true position. Yes ,CM, for all the doubters out there. The positional play by the little guy to cut off Chelsea passing channels was fantastic.Spurs are solidifying into what appears to be a top 4 unit. Bale, WOW.!!! Dawson, Gomes, unbelievable stuff. Even Kabul is starting to look at home in the Spurs colours. White Hart Lane is becoming a fortress. COYS

Kaboul crosses a bit better than Corluka, doesn't he? He'd be better at right back if he wasn't under the mistaken impression that he's about several inches shorter and 3 stone lighter, but I didn't think he did all that badly considering he's more at home deep in midfield.

Pav could have had two goals easily, three maybe. On any other day, I'm sure he would have.

That comment helps explain why your support both home and away is diabolical - you're only interested if you win - you will never understand what tottenham hotspur is about. Que your cocky not so witty reply. Instead get ready to go and sing we're by far the greatest team at wigan.

Hi Jewbanker - I am a little puzzled at your Kaboul comments. You said that he is more at home deep in midfield. Do you think he is a midfielder? Or do you think that his best position is there? Traditionally he is a centre back. Also you said that he crossed better than Corluka - well, I struggle to remember him crossing well at all. Kaboul is more athletic that Corluka and can score a few, but where he misses out is temperament, composure and tactical intelligence where Corluka wins hands down.

And to "Delighted from Singapore "
1) We weren't lucky due to Drogba's injury. We were 2-0 at that point. Also Drogba has been carrying an injury for weeks, and that's why he hasn't been startingmany matches - they gambled with him. Plus, you don't make all your substitutions early precisely for this reason - especially when you have a player less than 100% on the pitch.
2) You mention Kaboul, Pav and Bentley need to improve. Well, in terms of mistakes, Ekotto made some big ones that could have been punished. However, before his injury, he was great. Pav is Pav, on another day, he would have got 3. I don't think you can change him. I think we all knew this about him - I still think he is good. Bentley often takes too many touches. He needs to mix it up, sometimes quick, sometimes hit first time - he has the touch.
3) YES I AGREE. That Bolton at home game is starting to concern me. Them winning at Stoke (who beat us remember?) shows that they are dangerous, AND the still need to confirm safety.
4) YES I AGREE. The ref seemed to be on our side - for once. Everything seemed to go our way.

Also City won away at Chelsea, so they don't always lose to big teams. But their remaining matches are very tricky. They still have Villa - who seem to do everything to get a draw!

Apr 18, 2010 at 9:07 AM | Unregistered CommenterTonyTott

Brook; how it feels to be a gooner? Pretty shitty I'd imagine, not being able to beat the big boys and having to rely on other teams to get results for you, your manager and only decent player, you know Fabregas, the one you can't win at WHL without, going to Spain next season. Oh, and the board room turmoil that will turn you into the next Liverpool.
It's only a matter of time before all those fickle fans who silently sit in the stands before booing their own team and going home on 60mins leave the club for good when they get bored of not winning anything. Again. Then how do you pay for that soulless carpark of a stadium? Could always turn it into flats and move back to Woolwich I suppose.

WHL has been rocking this past week. Hopefully the Harry out brigade (apparently he used to manage another team and *gasp* doesn't stand up much during games!) will stay under their rocks until the end of the season. And is it too much to ask that we lay the 'Hudd is lazy' myth to rest?
