« Who's the Pompey mystery man? | Main | Gudjohnsen »

You wait ages for one and then three…

You have to feel for Pompey. Savaged financially, Judas suing them, reliant on Jamie O'Hara's hand-outs and now us, plucking more of their players as they stand there, disillusioned and depressed.

Kaboul it appears is the next one. The Beast with no Brain is set for a return. Portsmouth still owe as a couple of million quid on the deal apparently, so yet another 'bargain' in the making, hey? He hardly got a chance first time round at the Lane and I'm certain I remember Comolli banging on about him being 'one for the future'. So much wrong with that.

A) You don’t spend £8M odd quid on a player for the future when at the time we needed players for the present
B)  You don't then throw him into the team in desperation and decimate his confidence (this happens a lot at Spurs)
C) And player 'for the future' usually show signs of the player they will one day turn into. Which J-K failed to do

Actually, what am I saying? He did get a chance. It was because of his chances that we sold him. Strong, determined but prone to massive mistakes. I know what you're thinking. Dawson. We kept with the latter and he's not doing too badly. Good enough in fact for a 5 year contract.

If you're wondering, Begovic is the other target (although he has played for two clubs already in a footballing year).

I liked Kaboul initially. He looked like the type of 110% player we lacked at the time. However not so refined in other areas. We sign the wrong player for an over-inflated price, say we're not going to use him, use him, he has a major high (4-4 v Villa) and then is tagged as a minor scapegoat following mediocre performances and several shag-ups. Then he's gone. And now he's on the verge of returning. For  less than we signed him for.

It's all just a bundle of barmy.

Is this the midfield cover then? Or do we dare to play him at centre-back? Shudder. Spurs, signing back players who were not that good in the first place.

Is Chimbonda available? Cheeky £2M bid?

I think we've finally reached the point where the universe has acheived maximum expansion, from here on in it's implosion, reverse entropy and time running backwards all the way!

Spooks - it's nice of you to write such a well considered reply! I was just expecting abuse from elsewhere...

Under the phrase crippled financially comes the removal of their official website. That most hated propaganda machine that spouts crap (well in our case anyway). Actually maybe the removal of that was done for club PR reasons also.

Huddlestone watch out, maybe Eider is after you!

Jan 28, 2010 at 4:38 PM | Unregistered Commenterhoopspur

Can't say any of these get me excited. Again Harry I call for you to sign Van der vart and Gago. Get rid of Pav and Jenas aswell.

Jan 28, 2010 at 4:42 PM | Unregistered CommenterBrazilyid

To be honest, I think a lot of Kaboul's issues came from being paired with Dawson and thrown in at the deep end. 2 years ago we all lost just as much confidence in Dawson. Neither of the pairing was particularly experienced, vocal, physical or actually worth playing, but we had no other choice.
Then we sold Kaboul and brought in Woodgate. Dawson improved dramatically alongside a much more experienced and dominating defender. Kaboul seems to have done likewise down at Fratton Park.
I think we should be trying to snag Kjaer from Palermo, but is it better to go with someone with proven experience in the PL or take a risk on an outsider coming in?

Insane transfer window if this one happens. Just insane.

Jan 28, 2010 at 4:45 PM | Unregistered CommenterGrim down South

Insane? That's a soft word for what's going on. I'm hoping these under whelming signings work in our favour. If they don't we are screwed.

Could be worse.... we could be Liverpool.... all selling and no buying.

Jan 28, 2010 at 4:53 PM | Unregistered CommenterWalkerboy

I dont see a huge amount of future in this buy. Will he play ahead of Dawson or Bassong... probably not. Will he play ahead of Hudd in centre mid.. probably not. Cant exactly see why we are bringing him in.

I have to confess though that i do quite like the player. But I just dont like the way we go about building our squad, buying players who are not as good as the ones we have just to have 'back up'. I would rather we invested in players who are better than what we already have and play bassong or daws as the back up. That was the purpose in bringing woody in.

All i can take from this is that Woody and Ledders are only going to play a hand full of games again this season and we had better just pray that we dont have any long term injuries to Daws or Bassong. Otherwise we will again be reliant upon Kaboul to secure us a champs league place... not a great prospect.

Does this mean the Ginger Pele to return this summer?

Jan 28, 2010 at 4:54 PM | Unregistered Commenter555

Will probably cost us next to nothing to sign him. Squad depth, the Tottenham way.

Jan 28, 2010 at 4:58 PM | Unregistered CommenterJep

If anything, it's proof that 'Arry probably won't carry us anywhere in the CL.......

1430 GMT: BBC South understands reports linking Portsmouth centre-back Younes Kaboul and goalkeeper Asmir Begovic with possible transfers to Tottenham are accurate.

It's going loco !

Dear oh dear, what is going on at Spurs! What next , Jenas to be made captain of Spurs, Prime Minister of Europe, President of earth, King of the Milky way, Supeme being of the universe.

IF DAWS OR BASSONG GETS INJURED WE ARE IN THE BROWN STUFF SO CAN SEE HARRY'S POINT. JUST HOPE HE IS BETTER THIS TIME AROUND

Jan 28, 2010 at 5:13 PM | Unregistered CommenterBOBBY BOY

I suspect Kaboul is the DM we've been after, at least in Harry's eyes. Don't be surprised if we feature Sgt Wilson and Kaboul in central midfield for matches like Brum away (although that particular fixture will come too soon for Younes this time round) and to lock out sides when we need to - remember Everton? Given the way Liverpool "out muscled" us we clearly needed some more steeel for certain games. Thudd is great and has a bright future for us but he has shown time and again he can't compete in very physical contests, oddly for such a big lad.

I too would have liked to have seen Van der Vaart and Gago at the Lane, but the Prem is in a period of financial retrenchment and we clearly can't afford/aren't prepared to pay the inflated wages of your Van Nistelroys etc. Kjaer apparently wants £100k a week FFS and he's had a handful of impressive performances!

Given the dire financial straits of Portsmouth, Man U etc etc, I for one applaud the sense of financial realism among the Tottenham hierarchy - except when they sell our best players.

Jan 28, 2010 at 5:14 PM | Unregistered CommenterMike England's Knee Cap

We need a defender, we all know that. Yes Kjaer is good, but how good? The Serie A is much different from the Premiership, the speed alone is a huge difference. We know why we are going in for him, Pompey owe us money and they'll owe a minimum of 25% from any sell-on. They value him at a bloated rate of £14M meaning they would owe us £3.5M. Add that to the £1.5M still owed and that is a tidy £5M. His realistic value is no more than £8M which still means we get a £1.5M discount and a percentage of the sell-on fee, roughly £2M. Still puts the fee at £5M. It actually is a benefit for them to sell him to another team; they'll at least get a fee more million.

With Kaboul we know what to expect, a raw defender who at times is unpredictable. But he is an imposing player, speedy and exceptional in the air. He has one quality that we have yet to see on a consistent basis from our centre-halves, he scores. It is strange though that we keep going back for players we already had, which is really odd. I don't think I seen four players return to their previous club within 18 months of their departure.

why bring a PLAYER back that was not GOOD enough the first time round.same old tottenham 2 steps forward 1 step back.BUT i hope im RONG.

Jan 28, 2010 at 5:33 PM | Unregistered CommenterRCAULFIELD06@GOOGLEMAIL.COM

Maybe Harry's getting lonely on that commute up from the south coast so he needs kaboul and beovic to keep him company? That is the only logical reason I can see for these signings

Jan 28, 2010 at 6:07 PM | Unregistered CommenterFox Mulder

fox , you may be on to something there ... or maybe Harry has a stake in Portsmouth ?

Jan 28, 2010 at 6:14 PM | Unregistered Commenterbelgian spur

At the start of the window, it was Sandro, RVN, Kjaer and Hunteelar we were buying.
Four weeks later its Gudjonsen, Kaboul and Begovic.
Weve gone from shopping in Harrods to the Poundshop in 28 days!

Jan 28, 2010 at 6:24 PM | Unregistered CommenterDAVID

There's not many centre backs that are his age that don't make mistakes - he's got everything needed to be a very good centre back, heading, tackling hard, touch, poise on the ball (like RIo at the wrong time but will learn), and has presence - might jig us up a bit when we need a kick up the ass - good back up, which is what he'll be

Jan 28, 2010 at 7:59 PM | Unregistered CommenterJIMA

Harry must be getting something out of this deal, why else will he do it, or is he stupid, move on Harry and let pompey be,enough is enough.

Jan 28, 2010 at 8:05 PM | Unregistered Commenterkoko61

spurs downfall this season has been because king and woodgate av been injured.when these 2 players are fit they r the best 2 cb combination in premier league and good enough 4 champions league glory, and its imposssible to replace their skill and experience in half a season.av watched kaboul at pompey and e looks like a different player.bassong dawson and kaboul..good solid young players...

Jan 28, 2010 at 8:18 PM | Unregistered Commentersimon

for petes sake will spurs fans stop whinging about who done us wrong etc and wake up and smell the coffee ...........if this club is going to stay at the top we need all players with anything to say

say it!........if kaboul can do a job for us into the champions league great...........

next!

Jan 28, 2010 at 8:27 PM | Unregistered Commenterbilliospur

I recall really similar raw not good enough sell him blah about one BAE not all that long ago. But now he has decent support beside and ahead of him and bam! FFS kaboul joined us from a lower standard and was thrown right in. I think Harry is spot on. I look forward to his return even to just rid us of any selection complacency thanks to the perma-crock defenders we have.

Jan 28, 2010 at 8:48 PM | Unregistered CommenterDr Oyvind

I always said kaboul would be a quality centre half but not at spurs. He needed time to adjust to the language and to settle in a new country not to mention adjust to playing in the quickest and most physical league in europe. We chucked him in with a coach like Ramos when everything was turning to shit and said get on with it.If he comes back he will be a quality addition better than Bassong who reminds me of Gardener ie always nervous when he is on the pitch !

Jan 28, 2010 at 8:52 PM | Unregistered Commentertopyid

"I think we've finally reached the point where the universe has acheived maximum expansion, from here on in it's implosion, reverse entropy and time running backwards all the way!"

...does this mean I'll get to see Spurs do the double? Woohoo!!

Jan 28, 2010 at 9:13 PM | Unregistered CommenterJohnnyB

If ,sorry when portsmouth go under what chances of us getting the money owed to us .By getting Kaboul we are getting a player whose value somehow has gone up and other clubs want.If Arry can somehow manage to keep this going Levy will be laughing all the way to the bank when we resell him in a years time.

Jan 28, 2010 at 9:45 PM | Unregistered Commenterdavy41

Next should be the Prince as since moving to our other feeder club he has been great.Get him back and things are starting to look like the good old Ramos days -now where is he Arry look out.

Jan 28, 2010 at 9:48 PM | Unregistered Commenterdavy41

We'll be after Kevin Prince Boateng and Darren Bent next then.

Jan 29, 2010 at 12:09 AM | Unregistered CommenterRob J

I am glad he's back, never wanted him to go. We at WHL have habitually bought players some good more bad and thrown em in the deep end especially the foreigners rather than loaning out to get em used to the pace and physicality of English football. Kaboul was one of those, ffs Bale has only just started and won his 1st game in our shirt. Kaboul is a better player for being away from us still not the finished article but defo better than before. As for Eidur well he can replace Jenas, Keane, Crouch and Pavlova so I think that is good bit of businessyet onlytime will tell also he vast experience dwarfs anything we have had at the club since Jurgen the German.

Jan 29, 2010 at 12:15 AM | Unregistered CommenterWhiteHartDub

@koko61 - Well done for stumbling on that nugget. Of course Redknapp will be getting something out of this; no doubt a large fucking wad of cash.

Since when did you buy a defender because he is good in the opposition box and scores goals?!

Jan 29, 2010 at 7:58 AM | Unregistered CommenterChazza

Kaboul had to go at the time for his own development, and to be fair he has come on a bit at Fratton Park (I know as have seen him a few times - free tickets on the south coast have been very easy to come by these days, and they wonder why they aren't doing better fnanicilly these days).

Yes he is still prone to wandering out of defence every now and then, but he is still comfortable on the ball, a tough tackler and has picked up a few MOM early on in the season in the face of 'better opposition'.

I would hazard a guess that this means that Woody is a lost cause and the YK is the depth we need, Prem experience, knows half the team, the manager and has an almost zokora like level of motivation, Let's just hope he's better long term in the talent stakes.

We could do worse.

Jan 29, 2010 at 8:57 AM | Unregistered CommenterTricky

its a great deal financially, but footballing wise? time will tell. if harry thinks he can make it as a midfielder could actually e a very clever signing.

just to clear up a couple of things - please stop banging on about signing van der vaart (you know who you are). He would add nothing. he couldnt play in a 2 man centre midfield, and prob couldnt play as a winger either. I could see him in the modric role....but we have modric....and niko...so just an illogical suggestion. And as for Kjaer, ive seen palermo twice recently and seen nothing to suggest that he will be an immediate success in the PL.
