Afternoon tea Spursistics

Vieira stats. He made 10 apperances last season for Inter. Nine of which he was either a sub or subbed. Spent force? Probably. Based on the past year or so, you'd think so. I guess when I wished we would look at someone as an understudy for Palacios, I didn't think the understudy would be older than him. Still time for a twist. There's a secondary rumour that its not Vieira (did someone say 'smokescreen'?) and that Flamini is the real target.

My favourite ESPN columnist has broken his silence on his decision to choose Spurs as his EPL team and has claimed it was a mistake, citing that Liverpool is the club he is now leaning towards because they are '…like the Boston Red Sox'. Stick with baseball buddy because the experiment hasn't worked. Not because of selecting Spurs, but because it was an half-arsed attempt at looking across the pond in an attempt to educate Americans about the beautiful game. No doubt, Simmons has lost out on the opportunity to entertain his public. No idea if it has to do with the lack of coverage over in the States at the time or if the prolonged process of selecting a EPL team had resulted in his interest evaporating faster than Tottenham's 4th spot dream. But Mr Simmons is wrong to think he made the wrong choice. If I was a clueless American (who is interested in soccer) or an MLS fan, I'd much prefer reading about the rollercoaster that is Spurs than the blandness of Anfield with their banners and scarf's. And title push and Champions League football and…

Oh. I get it now.

David Bentley, sat in a restaurant, gets punched in the face by some absolute **** who had given him a bit of stick before landing one on him. I read somewhere that David was lucky he didn't throw a punch back, because he'd have been nicked. If someone attacked me, for no reason at all other than the fact that he's a mindless jealous ****, and I was sat there with my pregnant girlfriend/wife - I'd have picked up a chair and smashed it across the fuckers face before dragging him outside and throwing him into the nearest gutter. The other guy started it, right? Just me. Hate it when people disturb my consumption of food. David is alright though. Decent in training today. Good lad.

Boateng. The Prince. He's back in the squad listings. I guess this means Harry is having a look at him, thanks to nobody willing to take a punt in signing him for the over-inflated fee we've tagged him with. You never know. Harry might manage (where others have failed) to get something out of his boots in the way of productivity or creation. Boateng been nothing but talk so far and didn't impress out on loan and with Adel still screaming for an escape away from WHL, we can do with having at least one wildcard in our ranks.

Typical twisting of the story by journalists: "'I will never sign for Spurs' says Vucinic"... Reading the article no mention of Spurs. "I don't want to leave Roma". Media-bias, surely not?

Simmons I think got bored of the EPL coverage after he selected his team. He should have stuck with it if he's intention was to raise awareness of the Premier League. All I remember at the time was nothing forthcoming from him until a year later when he said he should have chosen Newcastle for their zany crazy fans. And now he's saying Liverpool are a more viable option? I wonder, does he still follow English football or not?

Jul 14, 2009 at 2:29 PM | Unregistered CommenterKilljoy

'a close friend'
'a source close to the club'
'a friend of the player'

When you see any of the above you know it's BS agent talk.

I am sure its a smoke screen a bit like the Figo but what is the real deal? I am wondering if it mite be something happening in Madrid? Any ideas???

Jul 14, 2009 at 2:45 PM | Unregistered Commenterhotspurs

bill simmons is a tool-bag...granted I'm a Yankees fan so me liking him would be the Tottenham equivalent of having a hardcore Arsenal fan as a favorite writer...im an american that hasn't set foot in the UK (Ireland is the only place i've even been in europe) and i'll be a tottenham fan for as long as I live.

as to how i became a fan? on fifa 06 for the ps2, tottenham was the highest rated epl team that you could start out with on their manager mode...so I was always them and it kinda carried over into the real world. needless to say i've only been a fan for a few years but i'd like to think i'm catching on pretty quickly

simmons is notorious for being a bandwagon jumper....and Liverpool is not like Boston...not in the least...at least Liverpool has a history of winning. EVERYBODY in the US is a fan of one of the top 4...its annoying. I decided to be different and for that, I join you all in purgatory.

Tottenham highest rated? Must of been a bug :p

Glad you made the right chose and stuck with it mate. It's easy for people to latch onto the teams 'at the top'. A friend (yank out in Florida) started to follow Spurs thanks to Robbie Keane and his goal scoring antics in a World Cup.

Just to add to that guys, I was born in the states and was the biggest fan of American sports: basketball, American football, baseball... you name it. Then a die-hard Spurs friend of mine, here in Kuwait, told me that an Egyptian player (i'm half Egyptian by the way) named Mido joined the squad. I decided to give it a shot and watch the match. Mido scored a goal or two in his debut (sorry if I am wrong, it was a while back) and I was hooked!

I now bleed Spurs! I can't tell you how turned off I am sometimes from American sports after getting into footie! The Americans are sometimes way too technical / statistical, not necessarily a bad thing at all, but you tend to focus and get caught up in all of those numbers & figures... where has the simplicity of fierce competition gone? Football has a sublime build up to it and once that goal finally comes, it is a breathtaking moment! Quite simple really! Just thought I would share :)

Keep up the great work Spooky! COYS!!!!!!!!!!!

Rory Keen sure can kick a good goal. C'mon you Totternam Hotspurs. Go football!

Vieira is a smokescreen for we are out of ideas. Still, we seem to be on the verge of signing one or two right backs from Sheffield United, both called Kyle, so that's something to get excited about, no?

No.

Jul 14, 2009 at 3:37 PM | Unregistered CommenterBOF

@ elwehbi ... My home team is the first team that gave Mido a chance in europe , Kaa Gent , before he started his tour of europe. He was a wonderfull player for us but with some attitude issues ...

Jul 14, 2009 at 3:38 PM | Unregistered Commenterbelgian spur

Viera in the Prem??? Hahahahahahhahahahahahahaaaaaaa!

He wouldn’t pass the referee fitness exams, let alone be able to compete as a player. Stats from his time in Inter Milan show that he averages 4km in a match – compared to Lampard/Ballack who average 10/12km. We already have Big Tom….we don’t need another anchor! Lol

Agreed though, it’s most likely a smokescreen but God knows who for. Maybe it’s got to the point where it’s easier to guess if we choose the players that we HAVEN’T be linked with yet…..Ibrahimavic & Totti are my bets….

Jul 14, 2009 at 3:51 PM | Unregistered CommenterEl Tel

im beyond depressed. in years gone by i got wound up becuase we were linked with everyone and his uncle (everyones uncle is great in the air by the way). now, for the love of god can we please sign someone or sell someone. anything. please.

its a sorry state of affairs when the only real news is some numpty landing one on big dave in a restraunt.

and yes, i too would have had to fight back. i think a prize lobster would have been my weapon of choice.

belgian spur:

mido was on the right track but his attitude got the best of him, especially during the african nations cup finals when he was fuming that he was being subbed... just to let you know, if you don't already, the guy who came in for him scored the winning goal! the irony that is football. anyways, hope to see him scoring again, he's still young! cheers!

Jul 14, 2009 at 4:20 PM | Unregistered Commenterelwehbi

Flamini would do wouldn't he? He was never really a true goon shitbag in my eyes. Not like Vieira. Plus he fucked them over pretty hard in the end. Good lad.

Jul 14, 2009 at 5:02 PM | Unregistered Commenter2P8G

there is a media bias with some articles such as Vucinic etc...it is media blah blah...nothing new there

just because the market place has gone out of orbit .it doesnt mean we should blame on our lack of purchase......

as the snake said in jungle book.........twust in meee

Jul 14, 2009 at 5:37 PM | Unregistered CommenterBilliospur

Can't see Vieira really hasn't been great in Italy and seems plagued by injuries. I'm hoping this turns out to be a similarly silly story as when The Sun reported that Alan Sugar was trying to sign Tony Adams.

El Tel, you are spot on! It makes no sense whatsoever!! Sounds like media (Mail) BS to me.

If it was a smokescreen, Flamini would be just as laughable IMO, but for the opposite reason. Muntari would be good, but unlikely as his agent kinda ruled that out already didn't he?

Blimey US Futbol I'm really impressed. You must be the first American who really gets it, i.e. the pain and pleasure of waiting a whole match (season or lifetime!) for those brilliant moments rather than the instant gratification of basketball type scoring. You deserve honorary British citizenship. Just do us one favour in return: don't let the US ever get really good at footie ;-)

As an American Spurs fan, I'm thankful the pissant front-runner Simmons has moved on. When he wrote that damn column, every time you ran into someone and said you were Spurs, it was always ," Oh, because of the Sports Guy?" And then after they recovered from the throat punch, you could kindly explain to them that like most Americans, you came to the game late, ran into a favorite player and followed him to his Prem squad. I came to Spurs in 2002 with Keano. So, what I lack in history, I try to make up for in passion. Hell, we even have a Spurs Supporters Club here in Chicago. Check us out @ chicagospurs.org.

hey, no promises on keeping the US team down haha. some good young talent is finally starting to crack lineups in europe. hell, they were even talking about onyewu being the biggest transfer in american history (going to milan). i really hope one day an american makes it to WHL. probably won't happen for a while but I can hope.

Bill Simmons is the worst. Plays the long time sufferer card all the time even though Boston has won tons of stuff. He still plays the "We Deserve It" b/s non-stop too. He's an insufferable writer who gets face time just because of his connection with ESPN. He'd be a great addition to any of the trash English Papers.

My buddy from Pittsburgh got me into Spurs at the start of the 05-06 campaign. He said to not follow any of the Big 4 and said "Tottenham are right down your road." Being from Cleveland (the US equivelent of everything Spurs), I was latched on for the whole season and called him a liar as Spurs looked to break Top 4. Then came the Lasagna Game, and well the rest is history. The moment we lost that game, I dedicated myself to Spurs.

For me it has to be watching MOTD when i was little with my dad (who is a Man corp supporter ... ) and somehow the atmosphere of the fans and players like Ginola got me hooked on spurs. Spurs are in the PL what my team is in Belgium so that helped to i guess ... It s hard to follow every game when you are on the mainland but we also have a large Flemish spurs side. I try to attend as many games as is humanly and financially possible but getting the tickets is really hard ... Next game will be in november (i hope)

Thanx to my dad i got to see the Spurs-forest Fa cup final in 91 ... one of my first ever live football games.

Ahh the lasagna game...memories memories, when teddy couldnt bare to put the peno away, players vomiting, faces turning from red to green....and the utter depression of the moments that followed by a desire to put my fist down Wingers throat and pull out his liver...

Onwards and upwards then....well one can dream!

Speaking of US football, don't you guys think Dempsey (Fulham) is underrated? He is relatively consistent and gives all their opponents a go.

ah yes trembly, good call....i forgot about keller...he played right before i started getting into football unfortunately....i've heard that freddie adu grew up a tottenham fan...maybe we could grab him one day if he develops into what everybody thought he would years ago
