Modric to Utd?

Get a grip. It won't happen. Although one or two Spurs fans are worried that Fergie, rather than do the obvious and spend most of the Ronaldo windfall on a 'superstar' signing like Augero or Ribery or the lad from Lyon, Benzema - he'd prefer to spend a little less on proven Premiership quality such as Valencia and possibly Modric. More for your money sort of ethic rather than replacing one £80M player with a £60M one, which is what Ribery may cost, thanks to the mad mad footballing world we live in - completely detached from the reality of the economic crisis the world sits in.

Ironically, the dawn of the new Galacticos at Madrid means that every next best thing is going to be valued at an even more ridiculous price, leading to chaos and probable melt-down at a later date. Or maybe not.

Zidane was probably worth the £45M or so paid out by that zany Pérez. But even that was an incredible figure to part with but Real made the money back in silverware and shirt sales. Is Kaka worth £59M? Is Ronaldo worth more than both of them in a direct comparison? How much would Messi go for?

I guess these type of transfers will remain isolated in that it's always Madrid who do the buying, and in desperation are able to sign anyone for the most inflated of prices simply because they can.

So with the £80M set to burn a pretty hefty hole in his pocket (or sitting in a shoe box under the Glazers bed) one or two seem to suspect that Utd might look across to White Hart Lane once more to see what bargain they can pick up.

Modric and Lennon for £40M? <insert tumbleweed here>

The £30M spent on a certain moody Bulgarian has burnt Fergies fingers a little which will hopefully have him turning towards Germany and Ribery.

In all seriousness, our Modric isn't quite at the level that would have Utd knocking at our door. They've lost a superstar, so they need to draft in someone with the same sort of status.

Man Utd are one of the biggest clubs in the world with a small fortune at their mercy. The last place they're going to turn up at with a cheque book is N17. They want to win the league again, not finish 4th.

Fergie would do well in pinching Sneijder from Madrid. Quality player without the Hollywood hype.

Ronaldo to Madrid, RvN to Spurs. They hate each, common knowledge. Good day for Spurs.

This article is nonsense. Clearly written to get hits on your website. It barely qualifies as rampant speculation and certainly isn't an editorial.
In the past I have been impressed with some of your articles but this is just poor.

Jun 11, 2009 at 1:46 PM | Unregistered CommenterTottenhamtom

Utd have plucked Carrick and Berbatov but I agree, Moddle is not at the type of world class level Utd will seek out to fill. They need some full on blockbuster signings that can produce the goods at the highest level.

As usual, us (not you spooky) but Spurs fans over-rate the likes of Lennon and Modric. Good enough for us but they are not quite good enough for Utd.

Jun 11, 2009 at 1:47 PM | Unregistered Commenterlazy joe

Er Lazy Joe, Berbatov was good enough for Utd? Well at least good enough for them to sign him for £30M. All those players mentioned in the article will cost Utd the best part of £80M so they might have to go on the cheap. Valencia wont cost any more than £20M, which is still steep. Do you think Ribery is affordable for them? No chance.

Tottenhamtom - Calm down dear.

Jun 11, 2009 at 1:56 PM | Unregistered CommenterGloat

If any United take anymore of our players I'll stick a fork in the plug socket.

Sheringham, Carrick, Berbatov....

Jun 11, 2009 at 1:56 PM | Unregistered CommenterWho Framed Ruel Fox?

Modric to Utd? No chance. Spurs fans CALM DOWN.

Wait until the end of next season when we finish 6th and then he'll be sold.

Jun 11, 2009 at 1:57 PM | Unregistered CommenterShelfside Warrior

Maybe they'll go for Jenas. Just think of all that unrealised potential just waiting to be unleashed at Champions League level.
I would like to see us make a cheeky bid for Van Der Vaart now that he's surplus to requirements at Real, especially if we manage to bag Ruud boy.

Thanks for the feedback. Firstly, it's just a blog post. You'd probably have a fit if I reverted back to the way this blog worked when it was on Blogger and NOT on NewsNow, where I would post about what I had for lunch along with a thought or epiphany about Tottenham. Not everything has to be creative genius or deeply insightful. I don't owe anyone anything. I post what I think. Deal with it.

In fact, you probably described every back page headline the tabloids have gone with over the past 10 years.

Also - 'written to get hits on my blog' ? Please mate, don't insult me. This isn't the 'The Games Gone Crazy' blog.

£80M is staggering. Don't agree they will be weaker with Ronnie gone. With £80M, you can't possibly not sign a worthy replacement. Maybe not one at the level he was at, but someone like Ribery could tear it up over here given a season or two.

About 10% I think of all hits. They don't always post my blog articles anyway, due to randomness. Which I'm grateful for.

We'll always have out players plucked from us because Levy can never say no.

i think lennon has not yet shown enough consistency over the seasons for ferguson to come in for him. A lot of that is down to Jol playing him on the left or leaving him out the team and Ramos being unsure of him when he first came. Lennon has had a fantastic season this year though and I think signing bentley gave him a bit of a kick up the arse. I think any admireres in fergusons league would want to see him have another good season before they spent big on him. Modric still has some to prove but everyone forgets just how young he is and if he keeps improving to his prime at about 26 then you're looking at a world class player. I can't believe how much Berbatov hasn't been able to find form for united, I personally thought he'd be man u's top scorer this season and he definitely looked a 30m player when they signed him. I think Modric wants to prove himself at spurs before thinking about anywhere else

The blokes slating spooky, do fuck off you miserable cretins. He wrote an article, not to his usual high standard, but fucking hell, this isn't a sodding dissertation is it?

Also. Utd can fuck off if they come sniffing for any of other players.

Jun 11, 2009 at 2:22 PM | Unregistered Commenterkilljoy

Good article. Isn't trying to be anything more than it is. Statement of fact: Utd will not come in for Modric, which seems to be the opinions of some Spurs fans....if any of you idiots even bothered to click on the first link in the blog article you'd have seen the reason why he probably wrote this in the first place.

Utd will look to Europe. But doubt Ribery will be the answer. More likely to end up in Madrid at this rate. Talking of which, anyone fancy van Der Vart?

Jun 11, 2009 at 2:31 PM | Unregistered Commenterfilthy

NewsNow only provides 10% of your hits? I dunno where you're getting the other 90% from as NewsNow is clearly the best source for all things Lilywhite. Are you getting linked from the official site or summat?

I have to say though, Spooky is in my eyes the best Spurs blogger on Newsnow, and doesn't talk as much nonsense and pompous verbosity as Harry Hotspur. I really like this blog and feel you deserve recognition for it. I don't know how it works in terms of hits and advertising...if you're not getting paid for this maybe you should try and buy up your own domain name and sell advertising space as you're a fine sports writer and should be making a living from your insights....and if you make it big you can give me a job.

As for Modders to United: I think it's possible but not as a result of the Ronaldo transfer but because Scholes is knackered, Anderson is struggling to push on, Nani is a bit rubbish, and they need a playmaker. I think we'll be alright for this summer though, and now's the time to really push on, keep the spine and buy proven quality in the 3 or 4 places that need strengthening.

Read that link to the glory glory board. What a bunch of girls. Delusions guys, delusions. Modric is good but he is not good enough for Utd. Not yet.

Jun 11, 2009 at 2:38 PM | Unregistered Commenterteh crazy

Spooky is a great writer. Doubt he put any effort into that article though, but that's not meant as diss or anything. He's far better when ranting in character or with a creative twang and twist to the point being made. But Christ do people over-react when they read something they dont like. As if those precious seconds lost will haunt them for the rest of their lives.

Spooky - make sure your next blog post is of the usual high standard. You stealer of time.

fergie rates modric highly. but we'll never get the better of these wankers if we give in to selling our top players.

red nose has f**ked us up with teddy, carrick and berbatov - NO MORE.
if ronaldo is worth 80M then modric is gonna fetch more than 30M at least.

If Fergie's (supposedly) prepared to spunk £17m on Valencia then anything is possible. Hopefully Man U are about to enter one of their Djemba-Djemba/ Kleberson transitional periods. They already have the new Veron in Berba.

South Upper - that's fine mate. I don't care. Would be nice to know your opinion on anything Spurs related but the problem is people of your ilk only ever post to state how they don't like what I've written. And that's not often. I never see your input on the more serious in-depth stuff I wrote during the season. So, like I said. Its a little tricky to take the word of someone who is nothing more than a username in a comments section.

Hang tough buddy.

Next season is when we worry if we flop this up and coming season. Such is the life of a club outside of the Top 4. I guess it says a lot about Tottenham if Utd keep taking out players.

Carrick and Berba haven't exactly set the world on fire up there. He wont be in for Modric.

Gentle breezy read Spooky. Can't believe those Spurs fans on GG.co.uk think Utd would think of Modric as a replacement. Reckon Levy is stood outside WHL now with a shotgun waiting just in case..
