« How do you solve the conundrum of David Bentley? | Main | Carling Cup Obituary »

Won't someone please think of the children?

Anyone watch the Carling Cup coverage (Sky Sports) between City and the foetus collective? Platt (commentating), bless him, did his utmost to protect the lickle children running around in diapers (outside the comfort of their home play-den) against the unfair giant uber-experienced strong old old men of Manchester City, including the rather ancient Tevez and his zimmer frame. When they made it 3-0 Platt started to bleat on about how City were always going to win if they took the initiative because, in essence, they had enough to defeat a team of kids. Although Arsenal did play pretty football in the first half. Which is a commodity valued higher than silverware these days. You don't win anything with kids. Well, not with this lot. Eleven kids. Well, actually a team that included four kids and a collection of first team players. That's four kids. Some of which have Champions League experience. But still, kids. It's almost half the starting line-up okay, so give it a rest! It was practically an academy side, ffs. Ok?

Never quite understood how this is meant to work though. Is it okay for kids to play and defeat lesser sides and be proclaimed brilliant/genius/amazing but if they happen to lose against stronger opposition, it's expected and the opposition have sort of indirectly cheated by including 'experienced' players? Doesn't it mean they're just decent young players who are not quite ready for proper football just yet? Seems Wenger continues to embrace this perpetual youth dynasty to ready them for the future by playing them in the CC, yet still throws his toys out the pram when they get dicked. Isn't that part of the learning curve then? And if so, why be so utterly classless in defeat? In addition, if they're that good, why mixed up the line-up with more experienced players? Why not just play a fully strength side and, I don't know, have a day out at Wembley, win something perhaps. It's still a cup. No matter how devalued and insignificant it appears to have become to the 'big clubs'.

No sign either of the Wilshire super-show (I was advised to tune in by a gooner mate and droll) we get when they play < insert Championship team here > at home? Where? Where was it? Ah, don't matter. Just fooling around. There's always next season. When the kids grow up they'll be world beaters. For sure. When they grow up. Them and Peter Pan. Although Wilshire is already showing sublime mannerisms of a textbook Arsenal player, what with the mouthing off and moaning and dirty play.

Then we witness Wenger (he's free to shake hands with whoever he wants) disappearing down the tunnel ignoring a waving Mark Hughes. And why should he even bother hanging around anyway? How very dare City score three goals past his team. Outrageous. But again, understandable. Because City have more experience (key word that). Which equates to fielding a more structured effective balanced side for the occasion. Which helps win games. A lesson we harshly learnt last night when our kids (bite me - our mixture of first teamers and over-rated fringe players) lost to Utd's kids + Gary Neville. Point being, if you select a side that has no balance or strength then don't be so fucking shocked to lose.

Another golden moment in the coverage of the game was when Platt re-wrote history before our very eyes/ears. Arsenal - according to him - lost to Burnley in the semi-final of the Carling Cup last season. Honestly, they did, according to Platt. Season before, they beat Spurs 5-1 at White Hart Lane. Best-selling dvd down at the Emirates that. And people say I'm a melter for suggesting there's an ongoing conspiracy, and yet the vast majority of 'pundits' continue to gag on Top 4 meat. By the way: 3 defeats in a row, scored 0 conceded 7 (domestic games, for the pedants amongst you). Ask Platt and no doubt he'll confirm it's Barcelona's recent La Liga record.

Elsewhere, Robbo saves two pens to end Chelsea's run. It's really nice that these other London clubs are showing solidarity by crashing out the cup too leaving us not so lonely, scratching our heads with regret and bitterness.

Also Wenger threw all his toys outta his pram and wouldn't shake Hughes's hand afterwards. Poor show Arsene.

FOR ABOUT 3 YEARS NOW I HAVE BEEN SAYING THAT WENGER IS LOSING THE PLOT, OK TRY AND PROTECT YOUR PLAYERS.BUT SOMETIME WHEN YOU TRY AND DEFEND THE INDEFENSIBLE YOU JUST END UP LOOKING A COMPLETE THICK PRICK, TO THE POINT EVEN YOUR OWN PLAYERS MUST... ON OCCASION, THINK YOUR A WANKER.
THERE IS A STEADY AND REASSURING DECLINE GOING ON AT THE EMERIODS AND BINGO BRAIN IS OVERSEEING IT.

This 'Arsenal kids' rubbish has even made its way to the Australian media. Was listening to talkback radio one morning here in Queensland (and yes, they arent that smart up here and I acknowledge that) and they harped on about this crap from a Liverpool v Arsenal game. So I wrote an email asking for the pundit to explain his rationale. His reply was as follows:

"You say that we are wrong to say that they are youngsters. When we journalists and broadcasters talk about a "Young Team or Youngsters" we are not just talking about their age. We are also talking about their experience in the game at a senior level."

Fucking Rubbish, nuff said!

Media too lazy to come up with anything besides stereotypes and cliches shocker. City seem to be doing rather well against the Arse these days, eh?

I hope Blackburn wins it, I'd love to see Robbo lift the cup again.

Players like Ramsey can't be called youngsters. Obviously he's young, but he's played an FA cup final, and quite a few champions league matches and also a fair few Wales Caps. Thats more than most of our team, including King. I'd class our youngsters as people like Bostock, Obika, Mason etc. And since when are Song, Eboue, Rosicky or Silvestre youngsters? And Traore played a whole season for Pompey last season, and against Chelsea on the weekend. Going on that the Arsenal team are youngsters, I'm looking to see our youngsters such as Bale (despite being an international and having 3 seasons of Prem football, still a youngster), Bassong - 23 and only had one previous season in the Premiership. As Rosicky is a youngster, with only 68 International Caps to his name, I think that makes our whole squad youngsters? Except Cudicini, he's just about found his trade in football now, and the ever-green Jimmy Walker. But they don't even seem that old, taking into account 32 year old Silvestre is a youngster too! Hopefully our kids with such high potential like Keane, Crouch, Woodgate and King fulfill their potential, then we'll have a top team!

"Players like Ramsey can't be called youngsters."

Are you off your rocker pal? He's 18. That means you can call him a youngster.

Ledley King and "most of [your] team" aint played in any FA Cup finals or Champs League matches or whatever cos they play for a club who have done fuck all for years. Simples.

"Media too lazy to come up with anything besides stereotypes and cliches shocker."

He says, after reading another x thousand words of drivel about Sky this, 'orrible Big 4 that.

You lot really are priceless.

"I am free to shake whose hand I want. I had no professional courtesy to shake his hand.
"It was not to do with anything about the game. I've nothing more to say on that.
"If we had won the Carling Cup, we would not parade it around saying 'We have won a trophy'.
"To play in the Champions League quarter-finals or an FA Cup semi-final is 10 times more different to winning the Carling Cup."

He's a bitter and disillusioned man who's not going to win a cup again this year. There's obviously increasing pressure for him to BUY established stars, as his policy of playing with 'kids' isn't earning enough cups to appease the money men fighting for the helm of the Woolwich. His increasing public rudeness will turn neutrals, the fa and league cup organisers further against him and his kindergarten.

Ha ha ha.

Actually i think that Whinger will have to but in Jan, and abandon his policy. Especially after Arshavin's 'input' into the matter so publically, and with Van Prickie out for 5 months, he almost has no choice.

What will be interesting to see who he can get who will gel with the team in a short space of time and who can adapt to the EPL (something that for some reaason it is notoriously difficult to do). Especially with Man U on the prowl at the same time.

I'm hoping for Reyes mk II, or another like 'the beast' who turned out to be more like 'the slightly miffed pussy' .

Same old Arsenal every season

Beat average Championship / mid table prem team in the first round and everyone (Arsenal fans, journalists and sky sports pundits) bleat they are the best young players in the country.........

Same again in next round and everyone (Arsenal fans, journalists and sky sports pundits) says their youngsters are best in the world.....

Then they play a decent team who care about winning and get well beaten and go another season without winning the CC or come to think of it anything else for that matter......

IN WENGER I TRUST

@ yid01 - If you substitute the word "young" for "fringe" you could say the exact same about Tottenham but the difference is they were knocked out by a team who actually played a mixture of youth and squad players.

You have to laugh at Spooky's attempt to denounce Arsenal's team when it was only a few entries ago he tried to label the Spurs side put out against Man Utd as "make-shift", despite the fact it featured 8 players who are regular first team players. There is no comparison to that put out by the Gunners. The irony of him moaning about hypocrisy and the media when he is the epitome of it is not lost on me; the cheap whore.

Love the blinkered views in response to the truth,Gooners even play so called kids in the league according to Jeff Stelling like he proclaimed mid match when they lost out at Sunderland and of course they always play kids in the Carling Cup like they did last night.
They played Fabianski 24 year old ,14 international caps,Eboue 26 years old,25 caps,Silvestre 32 years old,40 caps,Rosicky 29 years old,68 caps,Song 22 years old,15 caps,Vela 20 years old,22 caps,Ramsey 19 on boxing day has 11 caps.Apart from Eastmond,Traore,Fran Merida and Wilshere the rest were internationals.
The talk of kids/fringe and reserves has made the competition sound second rate but the last 12 winners have been Chelsea x3,Man Utd x2,Spurs x2,Liverpool x2,Boro,Blackburn and Leicester.
Their average age last night was 22.36,for Spurs without King,Modric,Kranjcar,Assou-Ekotto,Woodgate,Giovani Dos Santos,Cudicini and O'Hara as options and Crouch,Corluka and Huddlestone on the bench Spurs played a strong side but far from first choice considering 5 or 6 first choices were out and three benched so bar Defoe,Gomes,Palacios and Lennon out of position left wing was that our current first eleven.
The Spurs average age is 25 from Tuesday night, take out Keane,Jenas,Bentley,Bale,Hutton,Bassong,Dawson and replace them with King,Woodgate,Corluka,Modric,Huddlestone,Assou-Ekotto and Crouch and they start instead you get a first eleven average of 23.36 which a whole year older than the kids of Wednesday night that played Man City.
Just goes to show what bollocks is spoken about Arsenal's so called kids of the Carling cup,Spurs first team containing two 29 year olds, two 28 year olds and a 27 year old is still playing in a side with an average age of just over 23.
No blinkered Spurs fans views and Spooky is not being hypocritical at all, those are the facts it's a pity half truths and embelishment's are what Sky love to talk in when referring to league cup teams, esecially good old sporting Arsene Wenger's so called kids.

I hate Wenger - he is a total chuff. Mark Hughes should have chased him down and headbutted him!

Dec 3, 2009 at 1:32 PM | Unregistered CommenterGC

Spookys underlying message is surely that for all the fanfare and hype, Arsenal are simply not good enough when they attempt to play a mixture of experienced players and youngsters. There is no balance. If he is happy to risk elimination from this Cup, then its a experiment that allows for experience and not all is lost (although you wouldn't say that based on the way he reacts to defeat).

The media are guilty however of exaggeration and Wenger is the master of confidence-building. Arsenal do have some very good talented players. One or two of which are going to be top players. But defeats such as the one against City place victories such as the one against Sheffield Utd in the Cup into perspective.

Chazza, I'm guessing from the banter you know Spooky. So you should know he's self-depreciating when it comes to Tottenham. Our side the other night might not have been make-shift in the strictness sense of the word and it was a side that on paper should have beaten Utd's. Sadly football isn't that obvious. We don't have the luxury of depth. This being another media exaggeration not helped by the likes of Robbie Keane. Our fringe players are either damaged good or completely useless. Look how long it took to win 4 games after Modric got himself injured. We won all 4 prior to that.

@spurs4life - You have put in a set of players that are older than the side you put out in the Carling Cup yet the average age goes down!? Either you struggle with maths, you struggle with English and have not worded your post properly, or you are talking out of your arse. I would suggest all three.

Dec 3, 2009 at 3:39 PM | Unregistered CommenterChazza

I think one or two of you are confusing things here. The article is about Arsenal and the media's obsession with their 'kids'. Untouchable when they win, heroic when they lose - because they tire out or get bullied. This isn't meant to be a game of one-upmanship. You can't compare one team with another. Spurs played poorly with a side that couldn't be bothered, with several key players missing. Which DOES make a difference. Arsenal played experienced players and four young chaps, a couple of which have plenty of Premier League experience. I don't know about you but I hardly find it awe-inspiring. Other clubs too have fielded weakened sides and lost. Big fucking boo hoo. Let's not lose sight of the fact that Arsenal being knocked out of anything is fucking hilarious.

Spurs are in a lose lose situation. Their best players will always be picked up by Utd, much like they pluck players from lesser teams than themselves. Cracking the top 4 is a task that's beyond most outside the current traditional four. But they give it a go even if they stumble most attempts. Arsenal are deluding themselves. Most of these kids never make it, and apart from 2 or 3 I don't expect anything different. Fact of the matter is, 5 years ago none of their star players would consider leaving the club and most would never expect to see that happen. In the present time, its far more likely. It's already happened. Let them gloat and blag to their hearts content. End of (their) days is nearing.

Sorry Chazza you retareded inbred that you can't grasp a point about a media wankfest becuase your brain is too small to understand my post.

I missed out a player correct age and it's 25.63 not 23.36 but unlike your amazing observation states four players are younger than the one's starting ahead of them in the CC and other three are older, well spotted it's hard to work out an entire group of older players would put the average age up pity you didn't realise that some were younger.
The two Spurs teams av.age difference is small,my point was the gooner kids the other night had 7 internationals with an age 22 Spurs is just over 25 the same as tuesdays team not much difference when their side is classed as kids.
But your problems with reading and acting like a fucking retard is down to years of your family inbreeding and lack of education.
What are you exactly,Gooner,Chav, retard, inbred, simpleton or abused child with the brain capacity of a dog turd?
Or is it a combination of all 6?

@Spurs4life - My brain understood exactly what you were getting at. The problem was that you were wrong. I would think that a 2 year average age difference is quite a big mistake when that is the crux of your whole argument; don't you? I wouldn't have minded so much if there was some class in your comeback but deary me, it was about as inventive as a Robbie Keane cartwheel. Nice one Chazza you understood what I was getting at then contradict yourself by not understanding it as the crux of the argument was the over the top kids theory not an average age that was just the highlighting what little age difference between the sides and 25 instead of 23 is not much difference.
I can spell retarded thanks it was an error when typing fast, you probably use spellcheck and know the word retarded very well having seen it on medical forms and had it explained many times so people know your condition.
