Fear and loathing at White Hart lane

Now for the less ambiguous approach.

There is a split in what people consider to be 'support'. The sense of entitlement and expectation appears to have bestowed some Tottenham's fans to demand it all now without any pragmatism or patience. There's a do or die attitude that has spread like cancer through the fanbase that seems to think it has to be top four or else we're doomed. A fatalistic attitude at best.

I've on many occasions advocated the necessity to qualify for the Champions League. Not just for all the possibilities of more wonderful expeditions and Glory Glory nights against some of the finest clubs in Europe but because it will aid in consolidating and improving stature and being able to lay foundations to compete for the league title - as attempting that at the moment is a faraway possibility due to the financial clout of other clubs around us and their seasonal consistency in finishing in one of those top four places. A sustained title challenge would be fantastic. We've not been in such a position since the 80s. It's not something associated with us so its good to remember that nothing is owed and everything should be earned.

If that means there is sacrifice or transition, as difficult as it would mean having to suffer a little indignity and bruised ego with opposing supporters, surely in the long run it's worth it? Because of the short-termism of Redknapp's tenure, restructure was unavoidable. The short term is important but can not be detrimental to the long term. If supporters are getting on Villas-Boas back already then that will not help matters at all. How can it possibly help? It's hardly comparable to George Graham taking the helm which went against everything we as a club aspire to through the fans. But then regardless of the person at the helm of coaching, you still want Spurs to win games and you still want to be part of that by being vocal and proud of the shirt. Anything less is just that. Keep it up and it will compound the negativity that the tabloid hacks feed off and you'll end up appeasing all the people outside of the club that want us to fail.

You want indignity, actual indignity? Do you remember the past at all well? Sure, we've moved on and yes we have to be hungry and focused for success to be able to continue our progression but would you prefer longevity to complement our new training ground or Chelsea's chop and change philosophy which to be fair isn't too dissimilar to our past either. People demanding immediate success, people believing it's okay to abuse or boo so soon into a new era as acceptable behaviour - sorry, I just can't see any side of your argument that makes sense to me. But I guess that's the beauty of football. Opinions and perceptions vary from one club to the next and from one fan at the same club to the next. Maybe this isn't about football itself and simply a reflection of each individuals outlook on life and challenges.

The club should breed success, whatever it takes, taking the good with the bad. But it seems the very desire for success is breeding fear and loathing. Failure should not be feared. It should be despised. But that hatred needs to be born out of rejuvenated spirit. You think that's going to happen with in-fighting?

Our form hasn't been great for a while. If you think Villas-Boas can suddenly handle an overhaul of players, training and tactics in a few weeks you're dreaming. If you think he shouldn't change a thing and keep it the same way then you're delusional. We've not been playing well for more than just three games in Season 2013.

Perhaps there's emotional confusion at play. The loss of Modric and van der Vaart is a massive blow regardless of the politics and replacements. The fact we did enough to qualify for the Champions League last season in terms of league placement but had the privilege mugged off us. These are bitter pills to swallow. There's no shame in being downbeat, but for the love of all things Lilywhite, pick yourselves up from the floor and man up. Players included.

If you're not feeling good about our current form, sitting at home or at the game or the pub just sing a chorus of 'Can't smile without you' and remember what it means to be a supporter of Tottenham. We got relegated in the late 1970s. If you don't know what the Spurs fans did at that game then browse away from this blog and do yourself the favour of finding out.

I just wish levy and the board had the balls now to say avb is here for two seasons minimum so fans..certain players and the media get used to it...would be massive statement and really show how we intend to progress..

Spooky this is the sort of article that I can truely support!! I? have doubta when you do your negatives (Trolling) that it can have posigtivd effects on the club, the players, the supporters, and yourself! negativity does not lead to sucess any more than BOOIng.
I am not say that constructive criticism is wrong!! Thanks for the BLOGS and the podcast. Wish i could get to the lane especially for the 1882!!

i total agree with this opinion , give avb a chance , did any team ( football , work , ) get on together when heckled from your own ?

Sep 3, 2012 at 9:32 PM | Unregistered Commenterwynnspurs

That's more eloquently put and totally agree.
Personally I was in another camp all on my own thinking who are these muppets booing and who are these muppets swearing at the people booing.

Why shouldn't they boo and hiss and shout expletives at their own team when they're not winning? Don't forget that these are the same men whose wives ridicule them in front of their own mates because they can't achieve erection. It can only help the situation, can't it?

Sep 3, 2012 at 9:37 PM | Unregistered CommenterPP

At last a sensible blog about the current state of the team. Totally agree, we haven't been playing well for a fair while now. It has nothing to do with AVB and the changes. We all knew Modric would be gone this summer regardless of whether we qualified for the CL. Most of had a fair idea VDV would also go back to Germany to be with his family. We were playing badly last season with both of these players, it's not something that has materialised this season, it's deeper than that.
I firmly beleive the AVB will get the players doing the business, they are too good not to and he is whatever some people think a good coach. As for the attacks on Daniel Levy supposedly destroying the club, that is just too mad for words. He has transformed the club along with Enic's money, just think where we'd be if we had some damn yankie owners.
Let's start to get behind the team COYS!!

Well said mate. I think your bloke has what it takes - he needs time to get there.

Sep 3, 2012 at 9:45 PM | Unregistered CommenterWigan Blue

I'm afraid of signing the players necessary to, as I said, move the club forward

So I go with my usual routine of only signing players with money brought in from sales and covering my arse by leaving anything else to the last minute and then blaming the other club.

Oh and my making repeated bids for Damiao to a supposed partner club where I know the man in charge is just as difficult to deal with me? Genius.

I think it's time for you to write another letter to me. But then that would be criticism. And that is verboten.

let us stop feeding the haters , and the beast ,by that i mean the media merry go round and get behind the boys , i do have my own ideas on the line-ups etc , as we all do ! , but we dont want a downward spiral of confidence through the ranks !!

For the last 3 years I have noticed that the people who post on sites and run websites have lost all touch with reality. Spurs cannot compete with the teams who have continualy played in the Champions League, what they have achieved in great, but the fans are behaving like spolit children. For the first time in years we have appointed a manager with a plan and a system of play which hopefully will work. Recently we could compete with most teams on the field if we had our best 11 on the pitch, now we might start with a system where players can come in and not detract from the way we play. But I sure there will be more throwing of toys if they dont get jelly and ice cream soon

the problem with spurs is, with have 1 of the best starting 11 but that just it. looking at the bench is the problem and god for bid we get any more injuries or tried players who can replace them, JJ(no f**king way) he cost us 2 point at west brom.J Livermore is not good enough. no cover for Bale or AL so they can play how they like cause there no 1 2 replace them. look it was a good thing dawson didn't leave as Kaboul out for 4 months. and am sick to deaf with the way Mr levy sorting out tranfers. can he not see the way he go's about it, his not saving or making money this way. 1st of all we throw away the first 3-5 game at the start of each season cause the team not ready and the new have to gel. REMEMBER we miss out of CL by 1 POINT. u work it out and LOOK what is he doing again. 2nd we have to pay more or miss out. if u like at some of the tranfers by some of the PL club. they are buying top player for under 10m but he want players that are 20+ and will only leave for CL club. a big waste of time. 3nd stop taking the p*** with ur bids. if u pay the 15m for L Damiao last yr he would be here but u want to pay 10-12m and if we want him now it will 20-25+. deals like VDV don't happen all the time. so if u want SPURS the club u say u support. sort urself out cause ur starting to look like that KING WITH THE MAGIC COAT. they can see u coming.

When you have returned from your present defoe position with the FC podcast boys, you should refocus their tottenham ultra applause ambitions with matchday "cells" who proactively cajoul & invigorate the passive middle england season ticket holders who have crept round the ground like ivy and reeducate some of the very stupid herd mentality fuckwits who are undermining the major overhaul that levy and avb are doing their best to achieve. This is going to be a turbulent first half of season. You have watched fight club. Launch "Project Cheering". The first rule of which, is everyone is allowed to know our name. I was at the game on Saturday. It was a truly shocking performance all over the pitch (goalkeeper excused this time) but I still never booed. That only makes matters worse. Actually I was speechless for most of it.
I think the problem our optimists keep forgetting is that we really shouldn't be in so called 'transition', unless you mean finishing 6th place. That is probably just about acceptable. Anything lower is a joke & inexcusable.
A team that has finished 4th, 5th & 4th again should not be expecting mid-table.
I think AVB seems to be heading in that direction early doors & making excuses as to why it is likely.
Worse, the players are totally bemused by the tactics, positioning & formation. For example our 2 full backs were static all game. Our wingers did not take on their full backs. Our central midfielders kept giving the ball away.

I remember several weeks ago being more worried that our team would be too attacking with AVB.
We would get caught out on the counter etc. Instead we seem to be showing absolutely no imagine all game, allowing the opposition to take control. The fans get irate. The players get nervous & finally we concede.
AVB seems to be so worried about last seasons reckless behaviour at Chelsea he is parking the bus at home to Norwich (well alright that's a bit of an exaggeration but it was uninspiring).

Now this is the most disturbing bit.
This whole escapade to me smacks of mr Ramos in 2008. There are so many similarities it's untrue.
Losing our 2 best players & at best half replacing them.
Employing a manager who had 1 good season and that's it.
A manager that seems to over complicate formations & tactics. The players haven't got a clue. Remember we had a pre-season too to make them understand.
Losing & dropping points at the season start despite having an 'easy' schedule.
In 2008 apart from Chelsea away, we had an easy schedule too. Losing at home to Sunderland & Hull. Losing to Boro & the debacle at Stoke.
We have 2 more 'easy' games coming up, which I don't think will be easy at all. Reading away will be tough & they will be up for it.
Then QPR at home. Should be easy, they lost 5-0 to Swansea. There again Norwich were stuffed by Fulham first game too.

people wil say we need to be patient. It's a long-term plan etc. problem is after 6-8 games we could be bottom 6 or worse.
AVB will be under huge pressure by then. I could see him walking if Levy doesn't sack him first.
Even if we recover. 4th is almost impossible. United & City, plus the 2 scums of London are streets ahead. I would also say there are another 4-6 clubs also better at the moment.
Even if we finish 5th, Bale will be off to the senior partners of Real Madrid.
Then it's another transition, with, or most probably without, AVB.

Sep 3, 2012 at 10:06 PM | Unregistered CommenterPaxton Rich

Excellent post that I felt compelled to respond to.

I was not that excited by the appointment of AVB but that is mostly due to his Chelscum era. I am disappointed with the players and their inability to concentrate on the pitch. I believe I understand what he is trying to achieve and for that he has my support. Harry did what he always does and that is look out for himself and I understand that was his undoing. I was a fan of what he achieved and the way he had us playing but I never understood his lack of rotation, no plan B and his continual chatting to the press.

Modric was gone last summer and while he did put in some excellent performances last season, there were games where he simply couldn't be bothered. VDV is another one who went AWOL and may as well have taken a seat at times. Very happy with this transfer window and looking forward to seeing the team gel.

Spooky you're a like stuck fucking record, blah blah blah, a preaching apologist for an idiot incompetent chairman.

Just relax your crack and understand why we feel the criticism is justified, we dont like our chairman because we know he is incompetent, i know the boohs are intended at Levy, he hired AVB who is using moronic tactics, we don't blame AVB, the guy is not any good and lat year at Chelsea peoved that, we blame Levy for hiring him and doing badly at the transfer deadline, so stop preaching about some sort of moral code of supporters that you've dreamt up in a heated wet dream you had about Daniel Levy. It doesn't exist, we love our club but we don't have to love the Oxbridge twerp running it. And ifwe want to booh the players so what,, they can handle it but it wasn't them we see boohing on this occasion.

If supporters are unhappy they will booh and moan and blog, doesn't mean they won't support the team, you're position is arrogant and infantile and you're opinion is increasingly looking seriously biased. Move on and discusses some thing else.

Instead of that article you just wrote which is pretty much saying the exact same bloody thing you're past three articles have said, save yourself the time just put a picture up of you bending over, your Daniel Levy boxers round you're ankles and Daniel giving you one up the arsenal, with a big big stupid smile on you're arrogant face. Yes that is an infantile comment but it's true with regards to your opinion.

COYS and LEVY OUT!

Ps: Daniel, spooky has no connection with any of the criticism you have received on DML, he wants you to know that and he really appreciates all your support.

PPS: Daniel l, do you think spooky backs you so much because id you are kicked out his websites name won't make any sense anymore?

I have been going to the Lane for over 50 years and have never felt so ashamed to be a Spurs fan, supporting your team should mean just that. Spurs have given me some great moments and some very disappointing ones as well but that's what football is all about. I could never find it in my heart to boo Spurs, the team need your support more than ever now as the press would just love to see AVB fail, it's not as though the team aren't trying they need time to settle and come to terms with the new coaching and each other so please just give them a chance it's only been three games. COYS.

Sep 3, 2012 at 10:22 PM | Unregistered CommenterRichT

Cheers Spooky. I don't need to google what happened when we got relegated. I was there way before all that happened. I will say this. I remember standing behind the goal in the Park Lane after that last home game, singing until the police moved us out almost two hours after the game finished. How do I remember that? 'Cause we still talk about the support that we gave the club that day and the pride we felt at the way the crowd stood behind the team, even though we knew we were going down.
What happened after was typical. Blew the league away all season and were away with the title and then it all fell to pieces, winning only three of our last eight games and we scaped in on the last game of the season to get promoted. Nothing changed there then.
There will always be Spurs and there will always be those that support. The rest will go elsewhere. They always have!

Sep 3, 2012 at 10:25 PM | Unregistered Commentersinger

Yeah, suddenly I'm up Levy's arse when I've made a fairly good effort of being the voice of reason down the years. If back the club, I'm guilty of what exactly? Being cynical all of the time instead of some of the time? I fucking slated him over Stratford and tbh, I know a few things that I would not dare share on this forum that just confirm the man is completely and utterly focused on the investment. We all know that, he's part of an investment company, it's his responsibility. Which is why Stratford was an easy possibility for him. But seriously, take a step back and think about it.

He gets slated for appointing Redknapp, we all bitch and moan, Redknapp has success in terms of getting the squad playing to its potential and we go from pretenders to contenders for CL. The moment a change is made, one that the same people that bitched and moaned wanted, he gets slated again because everyone seems to have decided the AVB appointment has failed and its all because of the transfer window, and his greed, and his reluctance to sign players and blah fucking blah.

There's something I've been thinking about re: Levy that I'm ignoring mainly because its border line malicious gossip, but after the fact, if someone fails or if something works out I'll hold my hands up and admit to it. Will you do the same if its successful? Or will you quickly applaud in the background when I'm not looking?

He's not beyond criticism. Nobody is. But then this is just my opinion and my belief and the way I choose to ignore my team. I share because I like to because I know people will discuss things and argue things out. And yes, broken record it might be, but its no different to the broken record the other side are playing.

Its not preaching by the way. Its not a moral code. It's just how I choose to follow the team. If it differs from your ways, then that's fine. Get on with it. I'm not going to ask you to get lubed up.

As for being biased. LOL. And your opinion is what?

These people really are thick. I mean really, really thick. 2 games and boos - on what planet does that make sense. Liverpool are widely known for having the most deluded fans, and they didn't even get boos after being thrashed by west brom. An apologist for the chairman? what does that even mean - actually put some facts behind your criticism at least. When did it become us and them with the leadership of the club? New stadium, the best team we have had in decades...what is the complaint? Did you genuinely expect to start the season at a canter after modric left?

Well done Spooky but after the Ramos 'debacle' we have a right to be nervous. I think tom huddlestone's performance on Saturday sums it up- the squad is nervous and on an extremely short rope. Sep 3, 2012 at 11:02 PM | Unregistered CommenterSprucebandit

Once again, well put Spooky. WTF does anybody really know about how a club goes about it's business? It's a bloody entertainment business you booing twits. Why weren't you pricks booing all last season when we were winning since you hate Levy? Cheer your team or get a life. There are more than enough on the waiting list to take your seat and they are ready and willing to sing even when we're losing. I'm not apologizing for Levy or the hiring of AVB. My suggestion is for those who who boo to demonstrate their anger and disappointment by staying the f**k at home and playing football manager instead. Then get in line for your old seat once the new regime has had a chance to find it's feet.

New and old players alike are less likely to take chances in a new system knowing their home crowd is likely to begin booing the first time they miss an assignment or end up in the wrong position. And for those players who doubt the new system or their manager, the booing just feeds their play-it-safe, slacking -it-off attitude, waiting for someone else to make the tackle or move without the ball. Just like anyone else, those millionaires down on the pitch are going to want to work hard when and where they are appreciated. Oh, yeah, they're professionals so they should play with positively and optimistically in an atmosphere of knee-jerk criticism.

JC, The reason Liverpool fans aren't booing is because they are all in a state of shock.Yes of course we should get behind the team but we seem to be year after year in a "state of transition" ,there's no stability, we have to give AVB a decent chance, whats the option yet another manager.I have this feeling something is missing at Spurs maybe caused by continual chopping and changing.l love Spurs but l'm becoming disheartened ,as a Leeds fan said to me last season when we were third in the league "Enjoy it wont last Spurs always shoot themselves in the foot" .I doubt its going to change so whats left to say but stick together and COYS.

It's amazing how just about every Spurs website is currently overrun with 'Support Spurs/Levy/AVB or bugger off' bloggers or posters - how owns the copyright on Spurs then? Who decided that only the deluded Levy-lovers were 'real' supporters, and the rest of us were fit only to hand over our ticket money to ENIC and shut up? When you see the blind fury that any criticism seems to evoke in the ILWT Brigade (including one idiot - I can't remember the site - who said that he seriously tried to get someone thrown out of the Norwich game for criticising the hopelessly pedestrian Livermore) it's a wonder orchestrated applause North Korean style hasn't been introduced at WHL - give Levy time!

Sep 4, 2012 at 12:10 AM | Unregistered CommenterCheshuntboy

The point is, why are we being split into groups? Why am I a Levy/AVB apologist because I believe the team should be backed and supported and we show them the same type of support when we were playing brilliant football. Remember those days? Wasn't that long ago, and yet a dip in form is initially dismissed and ignored and forgotten about to suit this new blame game that's going on. Some of our fans have no concept of time.

We are becoming the very same thing we laugh at with them lot down the road.

Sep 4, 2012 at 12:14 AM | Registered Commenterspooky

This will really shock you (and destroy any credibility I might aspire to), but I don't hate 'that lot down the road' (I assume you mean Arsenal and not Hoddesdon Town) - I look at how they've been transformed as a club since Wenger arrived with total envy, and that largely why I can't stomach Levy, who has NOT performed miracles at Spurs - we've been an underperforming BIG club since the 1980s, not an overperforming small one under ENIC, as so many Levy supporters seem to believe. There's no right or wrong in this debate, but the venom of the ILWT lot towards us heretics is really going too far - football is still supposed to be a game, isn't it?

Exactly Spooky, - thats what I been saying all along, - we must give AVB able time to get it right.
The expectations must be toned down, - how in the world can anybody expect a New Manager to come in, - institute his way of playing and be expected to be succesful overnight. It will take time, - maybe a season, - perhaps two full seasons, before there is any realistic chance of our beloved team to get to the very top !

We as fans, - gotta be able to handle the bitter with the sweet ! We shall overcome!!
Positive thoughts from us, the fans will transplant to the players !

BUT, for all that, I did,nt boo, scream abuse or throw the dummy out. Its football, thats what happens sometimes. We all will be cheering together when that win comes round and we start climbing the league. Teams have off days and that was a big off day for us!!! AVB is here give him a chance ah? I,m not to happy but lets wait and see. Levy runs the club and keeps it financially sound (remember the terrible turks?) Yes he is tight but the players arrive in the end, even if he does frustrate the fans doing it, hence the booing at times by some folk. Me? well I,m coming home next week and I,ll be back at WHL first chance I get. I,ll moan I,ll groan, I,ll cheer as well, hopefully I wont boo!!! I have been doing all that since a kid from Edmonton first watching Ditchburn, Ramsey and Bill Nick PLAYING!!! Yes I am a old fart, but I,ve seen plenty of good and bad spurs sides over the years, as well as good and bad managers and chairmen!! Sep 4, 2012 at 4:38 AM | Unregistered CommenterA N OTHER

Why will it be "surely" be all right in the end, as you say? Is there a cosmic rule to that effect? I'm afraid I'm dubious about this British Bulldog spirit that says you have to go backwards before you go forwards -- probably the philosophy that the England team operates on as well, which explains a lot: this Dunkirk spirit that celebrates 'glorious' defeats. The points have been lost already -- which doesn't matter if you're Harry (who was over the moon with 4th place last season) but I have an idea that, given a taste of footing it with the two big boys of English soccer for a very convincing spell that went on for months last season, many Spurs fans are a lot more ambitious. If you aim for 4th (if that) you're always likely to hit unforeseen glitches that mean you fall short of that. There's no glory unless you aim to be the best you can. I seem to be one of the few posting to these Spurs sites that remembers something about the ONLY real glory days Spurs has seen in the last 50 years -- apart from that spell last season. From what Jimmy Greaves used to say, trying to squeeze great players into a rigid system will only be counterproductive. I hope AVB has the imagination to start to play to his players' special strengths.

Totally agreed that we need patience and full support for the team, coys.

I think Levy has taken a massive gamble in believing that AVB can take us to the next level for which Harry couldn't. It's ridiculous to judge things after 3 games, otherwise the scum would have been relegated last season! I don't agree with booing the team during play, but for me, it's not so much the result, as the way we played. After a decent performance against Newcastle, we have got progressively worse against West Brom and Norwich. It will take time for the players to adjust to AVB's system, however what I can't accept, is what appears to be a total lack of passion from most of the team. (Sandro and Dembele excepted) What brought us success last season, was playing at a high tempo with quick passing and movement. The way we played against West Brom and Norwich seemed no more than a training ground run out. In fact I think my Sunday team could hold out against a Spurs side playing at 3 mph passing sideways and backwards. Everyone has worked us out now and if AVB is so tactically astute why hasn't he come up with other options? It's unfair the crticism that's been given to Livermore. But if AVB thinks he should have been on the pitch for 90 minutes instead of Sandro, or that we should close shop and hang on for 1-0 wins against West Brom and Norwich, then it's very very worrying. Most supporters don't earn in a year what our players get in a week, so at the end of 90 minutes if supporters feel that the effort and commitment doesn't justify the players salaries, maybe booing the team off the pitch might make them think.. What Harry lacked lacked in tactical ability, he more than made up for in man management and that is half the battle in motivating the team. It's also a quality that AVB has yet to prove. Harry turned the club from being a laughing stock, to being respected throughout Europe. I just hope that AVB doesn't put us back to where we were 4 years ago.

Very balanced article Spooky and I'm in agreement with all that you stated in particular this comment...

"Our form hasn't been great for a while. If you think Villas-Boas can suddenly handle an overhaul of players, training and tactics in a few weeks you're dreaming. If you think he shouldn't change a thing and keep it the same way then you're delusional. We've not been playing well for more than just three games in Season 2013"...

I can understand the frustation of some supporters but I think that we need to eradicate this feeling of fear and pessism and get behind the team. Booing the side can only add further insult to injury, we often hear about playing the 'Tottenham Way', I suggest that we need to support the club the 'Tottenham Way' and throwing a hissy fit is most definitely not the best option if we wish to uplift the team. Deriding the club, manager and chairman so early into a new season makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. AVB will get it right I'[m sure, keep the faith people.
