Off he goes

Jermaine Jenas. Good enough for Jose Mourinho's fantasy football team, not good enough for Tottenham's first team. To Forest on loan. For a month. I still remember the day we signed him from Newcastle, discussing his fee with another Spurs supporter. JJ was and will always be the original poster boy for Daniel Levy's erratic 'buy young, buy British, sell for profit' transfer strategy. A failure in this case, unlike say Michael Carrick, bought and sold for a tidy profit.

The problem with Jenas? This easily explained conundrum centres around the fact that he 'had all the tools' to be a top class player. Managers, coaches - they all saw something most supporters in the stands struggled to see. Yes, he has an engine. Yes, he's an athlete. But I've always considered these attributes as a given to any player wishing to stamp their authority in top level football. That's the problem with JJ. He struggled to command, he struggled to own the midfield. On occasions, he was unplayable, but then every player has his day. Every player is capable of that something special. When a player destroys the opposition, this isn't always a preview of what to expect every Saturday afternoon. It's just something out of the ordinary.

We got sold on the all-action movie trailer which turned out to show the only all-action bits in the movie.

It was the lack of any true consistency in all those other games that frustrated. And sure, we all tend to miss/ignore the subtle stuff, the grafting which he was capable of because of all those other expectations. There sits in a dark corner the sorry face of irony. We wanted JJ to succeed. We wanted him to do well. We wanted those electric performances he would save up now and again for when we played Woolwich.

Articulate off the pitch but not overly confident on it, its a shame Jermaine isn't a compete **** like Lampard or Gerrard. If he had their relentlessness ethic, ego and self belief, he'd probably be club captain. Good luck at Forest, back where it all started. There might still be a twist in the tale.

Got it spot on regarding his attitude. Top lad, no ego and that's probably his problem. Good luck to him, he needs a move, still a PL player, just not with us.

Not sure I entirely agree with this post...

Certainly not the "We wanted him to succeed" part. The amount of times I've been at the Lane or in the pub & heard "Oh not f*cking Jenas *mumble*groan*mumble", you'd think he was Ghaly.

He always gave his all, always scored against the goon & played over 200 games for us (more than the likes of Clive Allen, Gazza, Crooks, Ginola, Lineker, etc.) . Even though he's not as technically gifted as some, it's a crying shame that he wasn't shown much respect post-Jol. I shall remember him fondly (let's be honest - he'll most likely stay at NFFC).

A very good summary of Jenas, I think. Well put. He should release a single. That's his niche.

I think there's another Blogger who named his site after JJ — All Action No Plot! This scribe couldn't have put it better himself! And he also continues to get paid handsomely for all that AANP! No need to cry for JJ!

I still blame last years riots on JJ's erratic passing. Two hours after the friendly vs Bilboa it all kicked off, I mean I guess there's always a breaking point. One to many passes to his imaginary friend on the right will tend to do it.

JJ is one of those players who reminds me never to boo or hate on players that leave the club. Here's a guy who is a decent player, gives his all, seems like a genuine nice guy - and yet gets crap from supporters while he's on the pitch, and via the media/twitter/blog comments/etc off it. Us fans think loyalty is a one-way street. Players must always love the club, but if we don't want them any more, then get rid, sod off, get off the pitch, stop taking the salary, you waste of space.

I don't mind when Modric wants a move to a bigger club, when Keane leaves to join his next boyhood club, when Berba forces his move. They're all great players, and if they weren't, we the fans would be telling them to go. I may not like how they sometimes disrupt the club while they force a move, but I know the fans and the club would also try to get them off contract if they didn't want them any more.

Good luck JJ and it's good to know that there are decent pro footballers out there. And if you come back as a squad player for us, I'll still be applauding you on and off the pitch.

I seem to be in a minority but I would still have him in my squad.

It's only a loan...He'll be baaack!!

He's a good squad player and help in cup ties, etc...but he's past-in (if he ever had it)for regular first team play. I hope he does well. Like Gollum...he may still have a role to play in our story...

We've publicised it but there is no block allocation this time round.

That is because of the fracas we had with the head steward and the lone short arse policeman (I can say that because I am a short arse) because we would not sit down. I think it is all down to health and safety. Will be there there to support our youths COYMS.

if he had their relentless ego, effort and self belief then we might have won trophies in the past 7 seven years. Jeans is ok just not a winner, has his Bentley and stuff. Now Vertonghen he seems like a winner. We need more winners and Modric was not one. Tomorrow will be interesting - 23 years - it has to be psychological. The first year I really started following Spurs in 76-77 we got relagated. That season we were 2-0 down at Old Trafford at half time and we won 3-2, with Ralph Coates scoring directly from a corner. Come on you Spurs!
