Shut up, sit down, do as we tell you to

Claude: "How's the renovation going?"
Oswald: "Great. The loft conversation is done, we're having the back garden landscaped"
Claude: "BBQ?"
Oswald: "Of course. Once it's completed we'll be having a house warming"
Claude: "You massive show off you"
Oswald: "I know. Keeps the wife happy. You still going to the Bahamas this summer?"
Claude: "Yes. Booked up. Two glorious weeks. Really looking forward to it"
Oswald: "We've decided on the Canary Islands"
Claude: "Again?"
Oswald: "Creature comforts"
Claude: "Is that the new...?"
Oswald: "Yes. It's a Blackberry"
Claude: "Looks lush"
Oswald: "That's because it is"
Claude: "I'm holding out for the next Galaxy"
Oswald: "What you got currently?"
Claude: "The current Galaxy. But the next one will be better"
Oswald: "Oh look. I think something has happened"
Claude: "Where? Oh yeah. They appear to be running back to the half-way line"

Rupert: "Excuse me. Yes, you two. Can you please keep the chitter chatter to a minimum. Tone it down a touch. I'm trying to critique the match here. Can you not see I'm writing some notes?"

Steward: "Chaps. If you persist with this behaviour I will have to escort you out of the ground. Read the warnings on the back of the seats. Use sign language if you're going to banter"

Claude/Oswald: "Sorry"

Claude: <So did someone score?>
Oswald: <Not sure. I've got an app on my phone. I'll have a look>

Valentine: <Excuse me, yes you two. Can you perhaps sign language a little less aggressively please. I'm feeling faint, you're making me dizzy with all your animated hand gestures. This is a football match you know>

Björk: Shhh!

The future of football. Shut up, sit down, do as we tell you to. That's not even the mantra of the powers that be. According to the powers that be, some fans are already making themselves comfortable in their seats, not wishing to participate in the games atmosphere but preferring to sit back and watch as though they are witnessing opera or ballet. Each to their own. No doubt it's your prerogative how you wish to soak it all in at a game. But if you want to watch in silence, do you have the right to define everyone else's experience to match your dainty bubble? Why is the minority so all consuming?

The club will never allow the drum back into White Hart Lane or the new stadium. For me, it's not even about the drum any more. It's about what the drum stood for. Freedom of expression. We continue to be marginalised by the club and according to Spurs, we appear to also be marginalised by some of our own. Other supporters have allegedly written to the club to say they oppose the drum and it's fake plastic beats and that it's an unnecessary distraction and they do not approve of the noise.

Football fans not approving of noise? Surely this is satire? Football fans complaining about other footballs fans and the manner in which they wish to demonstrate their love for the team. Must be satire.

You might think it's hypocritical that I'm saying its okay for 'us' to make noise and that we are imposing on those that do not wish to stand/sing/chant/scream/drum. But get this. Football might be this overly policed entertainment package that costs an arm and a leg to go to but the very essence of its existence remains tribal and we have a right to fight for that freedom of expression. If you don't like the noise, try the sofa. Last time I blogged about this someone told me that they no longer go to Spurs wishing to stand and sing and preferred to watch seated with their son/daughter. I'll let you work out the contradiction and hypocrisy in that statement.

If you wrote a letter to THFC complaining about the drum/noise, please get in touch. I've got my opinion, I've shared it. I'd like to give you a platform to share yours.

If anyone has positive stories about the drum to share, please email spursdrum @ gmail.com. He's compiling some to send to the club to counter the negative stories they have received. Doubtful the club will share their stories.

Are there any decisions made for the benefit of the core supporters anymore ? At some point this thing will have to tip the other way - fleecing your customers and treating them with no respect cant be tolerated forever. What if Sky Sports were affected by whats happening with Rupert Murdoch and couldnt cough up the money? Then the customers would suddenly be important again

"Across Europe they have drums, flares, horns, whistles...hell, some teams even have fans that spend the entire game with their back to the pitch so they can conducting the chanting/singing!"

I remember seeing Inter play Cagliari at the San Siro several years ago and I was sat near the away supporters. I was transfixed at the dude who had his back to the game for the whole 90 mins getting his away support going. Interesting but also slightly bizarre too.

Moe is bang on the money.

Thruss, you may want the prawn sandwich brigade there to fund future success, but they sure as hell don't want you there or the old guard stinking the place out with your uncouthness.

We're seeing a gradual but massive shift in the demographic at football. It won't be long till the 'prawn sandwich' brigade are in the majority and mocking 'the pint and a pie' brigade: 'I say Tarquin, they do whiff a bit, but at least they helped finance the escalators up to our hospitality suite'.

It's gone. If you were lucky enough to go to matches before SKY and all seater stadiums, hold onto those memories; they're not coming back. Now, your misplaced support for these cunts is a massive waste of time and money. They're actually laughing in your faces. Time to hang up the scarf, and watch it down the pub if you've got any sense.

Cant see what all the fuss is about with the term "Yids", it isnt racist at all. Its a language and a religion. The PC brigade havent got a clue what theyre whinging about half the time. Besides, we didnt make the name up we were given it as a form of insult but chose to embrace it. Get the drum back and get the Yid Army marching to the beat COYY ; )

May 18, 2012 at 11:54 AM | Unregistered CommenterYidster

@Yidster........

The fuss is thus - It is said, that you should not wear RED around Bulls. Bulls hate the colour red, it reminds them of the bullseye on a dart board, which was orignally taken by force from the Bulls eye socket.

The club feels (rightly or wrongly) that anti semitic chants at the Lane are largely reactive. Meaning, when we chant that word, they Hiss.... We stop chanting they stop Hissing.... So, it's not the word that's the problem.....it's the Bovine's innate muscle memory!!

I like the "We all know supporting Spurs is a passionate blah blah" info mercial they used to play on the jumbo. with "Sit Down" by James as the background music. so "EPL era". i'm amazed we can still use the Y word w/o being banned for 10 years.
anyway nice to see those ukraine Shaktar hoolies saying such pleasant things about us on Sky's Anytime doco!
Ich Bien Bayern.

Socialism has nothing to do with it. Politics has nothing to do with it. The drum was bloody annoying. Sorry, but that's my opinion. I didn't and wouldn't officially complain about it - if someone pays their ticket and wants to bang a drum the whole game AND the club's ok with that, then fair enough. But I'm not sorry it's gone, I'm afraid... I found it distracting, and I'm not a middle-aged bring-the-kids-alog-for-some-family-fun fan, nor am I part of the PSB, I'm a fairly ordinary (I think) Spurs supporter who loves the atmosphere and the chanting and the tantalising this-will-be-our-year-oh-no-it's-gone-tits-up-again experience that's at the heart of all our noble pride, but the sound of that big daft plasticky thumping annoyed the hell out of me. Maybe because I'm a bit of a muso and I didn't really appreciate the unsubtle pounding (I like the idea earlier on in the thread about using a midi drum hooked up to the PA - might get a bit more light and shade with such an arrangement).

Sorry, I probably am in the minority, and if it came back I wouldn't be moaning about it to anyone besides my mates, but I'm not getting behind any campaigns for its reinstatement.

May 19, 2012 at 9:45 AM | Unregistered CommenterRuetheday

Its not like the drum is a requirement to generate atmosphere. It was just another dimension to the atmosphere. Like I said, good enough for The Opus. Now no longer good enough for WHL.

i think the drum and all the singing is a disgrace, really puts me off while im checking the stock markets on my laptop in my box, i pay alot of money for that box too! who invited all you football fans anyway? and im too fat to stand up too!

Chelsea deserve CL.
We don't.
End of.

May 19, 2012 at 10:33 PM | Unregistered Commenternycyid

Yes that's right. We lost it, Chelsea did not cause it. We can never get it right. The crap always happens to us, ghost goals, lasagne, Arry, court case, England manager, missing third by one point, Chelsea winning with last kick, etc, etc, etc.

I believe teams make their own luck, we are not and never will be one of those teams. We don't have the fight, graft, will, courage to be anything other than 4', 5 or 6th place team.

And now sit back and watch how we lose our best one by one. I've been dreading this day for 2 yerars. Ever since we all got carried away with Inter milan, AC Milan and we took our eye off the top four need. Sick, sick and tired of supporting this team, tired and fed up that we always f@@@@ up every bloody time, we never fail.

That's phrase, " spurs will never fail to disappoint you " is so so true.

May 19, 2012 at 10:47 PM | Unregistered CommenterHotspurs

Well -we are probably not that surprised are we? If it could go wrong it did! Chelsea completely outplayed by both teams, park the bus, yet win. Perhaps Barca and BM need new strikers as well as us!

Well - lets hope our best players stay.

Gutted. Total agony. We deserved CL because we went through 38 matches and finished 4th.

May 19, 2012 at 10:57 PM | Unregistered CommenterSpurs_Thailand

They can beat the drum all they like at WHL. Harry is a loyaless fucker and now that we are only in the 2bob cup Levy can start again with a new manager with decency. Harry has none of that he has to go.

May 19, 2012 at 10:59 PM | Unregistered Commentercookiebun

We deserve nothing...we lost 3rd place and we deserve nothing. It's brutal, but that's the truth. That's why in this game you need to be so so focussed, nothing but nothing can divert the concentration or focus. We failed big time!

We shall lose our best players and we shall have to start again, and we have now effectively also lost 30 million. What do you say to this Arry, what's your excuse now Arry???

Fu@@@ing 5 years back!! Hate it, hate it!!!

So tomorrow's papers will be.....bale forty mill to city...modric thirty mill to Chelsea...friedel to the mls...and no doubt spooky to Facebook and joe Jordan to join last of the summer wine...it's gonna hurt so suck it up men and lets see where we are in August....hey at least we know Harry will try his best to win the uefa! What to say to you tonight...believe it or not I am sad for your mob. This season was your chance. This was your time. This was your push back to tell Chelski and Gooners to get ta f...

It is no ones fault but 'Arry and Levy. Perhaps more on Levy than Arry. Levy blew it in the Jan window with your bullshit signings and for Levy not telling 'Arry to either cut out the crappola with the press or get ta f...

Levy chose to do nothing...in effect he told the fans ...to get ta f...

Make up your own minds.

Thursday nights here we come. Midtable here we come. Goodbye Luka et al.
So what? We will improve. We have already advanced beyond our mid table position and can build from here.
But in the meantime be honest and give Chelsea some much deserved credit. On the one had you have a team that (despite it's crap run of form in the EPL) beat Barca and now Bayern vs a team that bottled it against Norwich at home and an utterly SHITE Villa side.
Which teams deserves to compete in the CL next year?

May 19, 2012 at 11:10 PM | Unregistered Commenternycyid

Oi fergie, we having a party, hahaha always the bridesmaid, never the bride, suck on that you scums.
And erm, COYS - Can only yearn success.

May 19, 2012 at 11:12 PM | Unregistered CommenterDon

Yes so true, Chelsea deserved it, we bottled it, there is no doubt about that! We do not have what it takes, we never will. Gooner, you are right, both Arry and Levy failed to push on when we needed to. They tried to do it on the cheap and f@@@@ up big time and now Levy will pay the price. He failed to spend 15-20 million, to win 40 million and keep his best players.

You really wonder whether he want to cash in on bale and modric and start again, small time mentality when we needed big time thinking and big players for the big games.

May 19, 2012 at 11:16 PM | Unregistered CommenterHotspurs

DC Gooner - its been a combination of things but Harry does not (did not) have the fortitude to guide us into consolidation. It was given away. I know its theoretical, but imagine Fergie with the Spurs squad. What we lacked, amongst several things, is that cutting edge, that killer instinct. Summed up with what Redknapp did away to Villa.

We're a club that continues to grow and progress but HR did enough for us to regress. Also, and its going to be forgotten, we did actually finish 4th. Any other season its a CL entry. 3rd should have been ours, but I'll be fucked if I care now. Can't do a thing about it.

Reality is, with the money City have the title will not happen for a club like Spurs so I'm sure we'll be in amongst it again for top four next season. Good luck in the qualifiers. I'm sure one or two gooners were baiting how if we made it we're go out due to the strength of the teams in there. Should be interesting.

And thanks for engaging.

May 19, 2012 at 11:29 PM | Registered Commenterspooky

May 19, 2012 at 11:41 PM | Registered Commenterspooky

To be fair, that one point does cast a pretty long shadow ...

May 19, 2012 at 11:43 PM | Unregistered Commenternycyid

Hotspurs, you said what I have been saying since Harry 'bottled it'. You need absolute focus. Harry should have been booted out after the Arsenal/Man U/Everton losses as it was obvious at that time his head was elsewhere and the focus was gone. He is a bad influence on every player and the coaches as he advocates disloyalty by his own behaviour. Levy must act now and get him out before we go into the transfer market.

May 19, 2012 at 11:44 PM | Unregistered Commentercookiebun

On the bright side, there are some cracking teams in EL next year. We might as well take it seriously ...
