Choke on your cornflakes

Sports writers, if you're going to make up some sh*t about Luka Modric and suggest a proposed transfer figure can you please have the common courtesy to do the player and his club some justice with something far more realistic.

£20M for a player arguably the best midfielder in the country, currently on a long term contract?

Jog on and stop trying to appease United.

It's going to be a long summer.

According to most of the tabloids he's a "Striker"? Do they even watch football?

Year after year we get targeted by the Press for speculation, does my head in. Can they not speculate about Arsenal instead?

Lost for words. Daily Mail, stand up and give yourself and big slap on the back; preferably with a large knife.

May 30, 2011 at 11:21 AM | Unregistered CommenterTerry Nutkins

Add to that the fact we paid £16.5 million for him and you get a very unlikely story.

May 30, 2011 at 11:22 AM | Unregistered CommenterBlando

more lazy journalism, I love the idea that we would sell Luka for £20m, considering as we paid £16.5m for him when he was completely unproven in the premier league, and we have no need to sell,

May 30, 2011 at 11:30 AM | Unregistered Commenter@sfreundwasaleg

Not ony the 16.5 milion pounds we paid for him.
He has also signed till 2016.
Now if a figure of around 35 million pounds was being debated, I would be choking on my Hoummous!!

The journo who wrote this in the Daily Mail occasionally turns up on Sunday Supplement and never seems very well informed. This particular story looks like one of Fergie's planted stories- "you do us a favour and print this nonsense, and we'll give you an exclusive in a few weeks". Before the recent games against Utd he's tried to unsettle both Bale and Modric, with "they know we're interested stories" This looks like a classic case of getting a journo to talk down the price, especially when you see that Taggart is about to spend £14m on the under-achieving Ashley Young , who has only one year left on his contract.

If this were right, we'd lose Garruff and Rafia and Arry. All would go off in a huff, as we would have indicated our aspirational intent.

May 30, 2011 at 11:41 AM | Unregistered CommenterSpurt

There's going to be months and months of this shit. If Modric wanted to leave (and he doesn't seem to want to) then sell him abroad, so Manu might have him against them in the CL. That would be amusing.

May 30, 2011 at 11:44 AM | Unregistered CommenterIain

I wonder if rent-a-gob will brand his media muckers as 'idiots'.

Don't worry though, as a statement of intent and ambition, the club are set to announce a signing that will entice world class players to the Lane and give the likes of little Luka a shot in the arm; step forward 40 year old Brad Friedel.

May 30, 2011 at 11:45 AM | Unregistered CommenterTMWNN

Unlikely...

1. I thought the same when I first heard about Carrick going to united (unlikely)
2. Then Berbatov staged a protest and we sold him to the same "more ambitious" team.
3. Now its Luka?

Luka has never been anything but a professional....So if Levy sells him TO MANCHESTER UNITED! It will confirm one thing. That there is a natural progression for a top Spurs player. You join us, if you don't succeed, you stay with us forever (JJ)if you succeed, you move "forward" to the ambitious club in Manchester (Sheringham, Carrick, Berbatov & now....?).

Daniel Levy must make a statement, we should NEVER sell a player (except the likes of JJ and Crouch who actually make teams weaker) to Manchester United for the next 10 years. Even a 40million pound bid from United should be rejected...If push comes to shove, sell him to Man City just to spite United.

May 30, 2011 at 11:46 AM | Unregistered CommenterRonnie

I say give him a new contract, pay him 100k a week whatever he wants. He is the only player who in my opinion is really irrecplaceable

May 30, 2011 at 11:50 AM | Unregistered CommenterGally

@Spurt....Arry can go if he wants to. His type of signings are hardly those of Luka Modric calibre. All he wants is a Phillip Neville, Scott Parker, Joe Cole and other rubbish. It easy for Levy to appease him.

@TMWNN...I suppose signing Brad Friedel does not amuse you? Wait until we unveil CL expert Phillip Neville. Luka and Bale will be so elated they will commit their careers to Spurs forever.

May 30, 2011 at 11:53 AM | Unregistered CommenterRonnie

Daniel Levy said he wouldn't be selling any of the important players. I don't always agree with Levy's methods, but I kinda trust him because he's a Spur thru' and thru'. Now if Sugar was in charge and these stories were being bandied about, I would have good reason to choke on my Weetabix.
Modric, Sandro, Rafa, Dawson, BAE, Rose, Hudd, Walker, Charlie, Defoe Lennon and Bale must be retained in order that we challenge for honours and CL in my opinion.
In Mr Levy I trust.

May 30, 2011 at 11:56 AM | Unregistered Commentercookiebun

@Ronnie. Not quite fair, didn't he nod through Sandro and Gallas, as well as getting us out of trouble with Palacios?

May 30, 2011 at 12:02 PM | Unregistered CommenterSpurt

As well as Harry said he would leave if we sold our best players and to be fair to him, wanting Neville and Freidel, Ferguson has signed a few oldies in his time (just to get United over the line) and I would'nt knock Harry for that. But he's a 'mouth almighty' and I do hold that against him.

May 30, 2011 at 12:02 PM | Unregistered Commentercookiebun

...Harry will not be able to resist Fergie's offer of Triffic Michael Owen in exchange.

I'm still hoping Chelsea will save us and take Harry Redknapp away. That is when you guys will realise just how average Redknapp - the seasoned relegation battler - really is. They will chase him away before the season ends.

May 30, 2011 at 12:09 PM | Unregistered CommenterRonnie

The boy annually comes out and says he's not going to United. Still, if I were him and Robbie Keane were getting paid more than me, I'd want to know why as well.

May 30, 2011 at 12:11 PM | Unregistered CommenterStratty

Yes, I'm hoping Chelski comes in for Redknapp, too. I heard it depends if Turkey get knocked out in the Euros.

May 30, 2011 at 12:12 PM | Unregistered CommenterStratty

cookiebun, is that the same Daniel Levy who wanted to move the club into West Ham territory, making us no less gypsy like than that horrible lot down the road?

*sound of the proverbial can of worms being re-opened*

May 30, 2011 at 12:12 PM | Unregistered CommenterTMWNN

Assuming Harry wont get the chelsea job and he has been sniffing around with real intent, can he carry on as our manger or will he have lost all credibility? HHXX

May 30, 2011 at 12:25 PM | Unregistered Commenterhorny helen

TMWNN. I agree with you. But he's doing his best for the club and he realises that with 36,000k crowds it's nigh on impossible to stay up there with the heavyweights, hence Ferguson and his likes always sniffing around.

May 30, 2011 at 1:06 PM | Unregistered Commentercookiebun

We definitely need a bigger stadium, but any chairman that is actively seeking to move to Stratford, in my mind, is not trustworthy. He's done a good job in respect of keeping us financially stable, but that's about all.

May 30, 2011 at 1:28 PM | Unregistered CommenterTMWNN

"He's done a good job in keeping us financially stable and hats all" What the hell else is he there for?, For Gods sake mate, I really wouldn't like to be your bank manager. Typical irrational thinking, as per usual. We needed a bigger stadium, could've got it for peanuts, didn't get it because of a carve up, so he fights it, that's being a good chairman!

May 30, 2011 at 2:21 PM | Unregistered CommenterEssexian76

This is entirely unrelated, but it appears Modric is unabashedly grabbing Fletcher's junk.

Saw that article and read it with a smile on my face. DM as trustworthy as the NOTW, make any stuff up an print it. Guardian ran a similar story but basically taking the piss out of it.

Nothing wrong with Friedel on a free either, used to the Prem and solid enough. We are saving our money for the strikers we need after all.

Refering to these low-rent hacks as 'sports writers' is an act of remarkable kindness... 'sport writers'? Sh**e writers more like!! This kind of caper will go on until the 'window slams shut' as it obviously does and always should of course. Can't just close can it, that would be far too boring!!!

May 30, 2011 at 10:01 PM | Unregistered CommenterLillywhite London

Apparently the author of the Daily Mail piece is banned from Old Trafford. Not sure how true that is.

Essexian76, "What the hell else is he there for?"

Whilst a custodian of our club, what he shouldn't be doing is turning us into the next MK Dons. If you can't understand that basic principle, you and me will never see eye to eye.

trinispur, I don't usually resort to name calling, but you're testing my patience. Lighten up ffs. Never heard of banter, precious?

May 30, 2011 at 10:49 PM | Unregistered CommenterTMWNN

It seems that these days we have self proclaimed (quasi pragmatic) finacial whiz kids rather than football fans.

The next step for this ilk is Apple FC. I'm sure they'll be happy with the bank balance.

May 31, 2011 at 12:03 AM | Unregistered CommenterTMWNN

Get real people 95% of Spurs fans reside too far away or overseas to care about where the Stadium is built. All we want is to compete financially and retain our best players.
Let Harry go..he is going in a year anyway. So sack him now or let him go unsettle Chelsea.

May 31, 2011 at 1:07 AM | Unregistered CommenterGav

If a bid came in for 50 million we would sell we would show surplus on the trading figures and thats what PLC s are all about regettably. It would be a mistake,we sold Carrick for a then staggerring 13 million and it put us back 2 years however it would be enevitable. The question is could Man Uts afford it? They have to replace Van Der Saar,Neville,Scholes, and Giggs. Also Bebe has been disappointing. So they offer 40 plus Berbatov?
Putting emotion to one side and my admiration for probably the best midfielder in the country it would Be difficult to say no for the board.
As for the stadium debate,i dont care where it is,as long as its North of the riverand within the M25 corridor. The important thing is to get the thing built.Even if we started it today it would be at least two years before we could occupy it and we would lose even more ground on the top four in terms of revenue

May 31, 2011 at 9:05 AM | Unregistered Commenterbournemouth spur

Oooh, can we get Apple to design our new stadium, TMWNN?

They'd make it look amazing, and we could then charge more for it being amazing, just for people to come and look at it.

We would of course have to construct it in china and then ship it over.

Also it's opening might be delayed, and availability at first will also be limited.

But, oooh it would be lovely and shiny. And expensive for the consumers, sorry, I mean fans.

May 31, 2011 at 10:44 AM | Unregistered Commentertricky

It's hardly paranoia to suggest they are willing the deal to happen at the cheapest price possible. Why no story stating 'Utd have to break the bank to land Modric: Man Utd will need to smash the British transfer record...etc etc etc'

May 31, 2011 at 10:50 AM | Registered Commenterspooky

Would this be a good time to say congratulations to Barcelona?!

May 31, 2011 at 1:43 PM | Unregistered Commenterbournemouth spur

TMWNN Obviously I'm not alone then? And its me that needs to lighten up?, it appears now the reality of losing our best and finest is finally hitting home, many a tear-eyed traditionalist has at last removed those rose tinted spec's. It was essential to retain our place at the top table, and Europa League just doesn't cut it. We'll face this and an awful lot of this until Sept!

May 31, 2011 at 4:05 PM | Unregistered CommenterEssexian76

I hope Harry goes and we get Mourinho in - we need someone dying to win. This will ensure stars know we have a real fighting chance to be amongst the best. It's the manager that needs to bring in the steel, which we dont possess and which causes us to lose too many points against such grand opposition as Wigan and Wolves.
