Understanding Harry

I do love Harry.

"I am not being presumptuous turning down Liverpool, because I haven’t been offered the job and haven’t spoken to anyone about it.

There is no need, as I have one year left on my contract at Tottenham and I am not thinking about anything other than being at White Hart Lane next season.

I can tell you that I have not been offered a new contract, but that doesn’t mean I am looking to move on – far from it.

I am loyal to Spurs, I want to stay at Spurs and I have a contract with Spurs, and I’d be happy to sign a new contract at Spurs if I was offered one, but in any case I have one year on my contract"

Subtlety is not his strong point.

contract - 5 mentions
one year left - 2 mentions
Spurs - 4 mentions in one sentence
whereabouts next season - 2

The "Liverpool interested in Harry", story breaks. No word from our gaffer for days, thus building up a little bit of uncertainty from the more paranoid ones amongst us. Rumour festers in the psyche of a certain bald chairman and then Harry strikes, verbally, forcefully, denouncing the Anfield club by repetitively re-educating us on his current predicament. You know, the one about him being one year off from the abyss of uncertainty. I wonder what point he's trying to drum home?

Back in logicworld, Liverpool would never look his way (I don't mean that in a derogatory way, Liverpool's expectations of a manager are of a certain template - foreign and crazy). And geographically, the only chance they would have if they were genuinely favouring our 'arry would be if they upped and moved to the South Coast, and trebled his wages in the process. Back to basics worked for us because we were never a bottom of the table club, just one with an inflated ego that forgot how to stand up and fight. He fixed it up. Restored pride and belief. Considering the plight of Liverpool, they need to suffer a little more indignity before they admit they need to re-think things (starting with new owners and possibly a replacement for Gerrard, if he grows balls and moves on).

For now, we can relax, we won't be seeing Redknapp's face printed on a massive banner alongside Shankly and Paisley with additional witty words beaming below with the Kop singing 'You'll never twitch alone...'

Considering we are two games away from the CL group stages, the only thing on our gaffers mind at the minute is to consolidate his worth with an improved contract/extension for his diligent work. He just needs to calm it down a tad.

I'm sure the next Tottenham good-feel story is not that far off from making the news...

It will be a shame to miss out on Harry mentioning 500 times "when I took over this club they only had 2 owners"!

There is yet one more unmentioned but extremely significant factor for Harry’s decision to stay, and that is his lifelong companion, wife Sandra. At this age she would never agree to get uprooted and move from their lovely South Coast home. London is the farthest place up north she’s willing to put up with, because he can get home to her every night. And Harry oblige to it by every day getting up early in the morning and driving to London and back, which, most would agree, at his age and daily physical and mental demand of the job is not a cakewalk. Liverpool? Not a chance.

"Contract" is the new "2 points from 8 games"

Have to love that man!! Genuinely think he's the only man that can match Fergie etc when it comes to mind games!!

If Harry's face twitched as much as any Liverpool supporters did over the last few months I'd be very surprised indeed!. Not a fan of the man, but he's undeniable worked a miracle at my beloved club. Woy's yer man, scowsers,

One year left on the deal, BUT with an option of two more years. We are definitely in the driving seat with this one. Levy is no mug.

Why on earth would Harry want the job? It is a job no one could win at. There is a substandard squad, with the exception of Torres and Gerrard--and he is having a poor spell, substantial debts, and a fractious fan/owners relationship.

With all due respect, why would Harry want to move up to that northern de-industrialized city and manage a team that cant even put together players fit enough to play for Spurs? Honestly, I dont even want Gerrard in my team - he's going downhill now, and I think Palacios or Sandro can easily do as gd a job. Just stay in London, Harry - the world's Lilywhite.

Gotta love the guy. Whatever he wants, double it and move on.

On talksport this morning he was asked the question "why have you not been offered a new contract yet?". He said dunno, I really dunno, but there's time for that". Harry plays it like Harry plays it... he does love a soundbite.

For sure, there is only one Arry Redknapp. He's on his way to becoming a Spurs legend.

Moving to Liverpool would be a step down....We're part of the big 4 now, don't you know! LFC only made Europa by virtue of Pompey failing to fill in some forms.

Typical Harry, using the media as a personal tool. My money is on Levy giving him a one-year extension.

Hoopspur - Harry is playing the 'hard done by' role with that. Suprised he didn't mention two points from eight games.

The Liverpool job must be a huge poisoned chalice. Potential player exodus, average squad, no money to spend, no CL, fans revolting ;) You'd have to be deluded or willing to risk a huge black mark on your CV in return for a few million in the back pocket.

OK, I'll do it.

Until Hicks and Gillette move on surely they'd only attract the likes of Iain Dowie. Rumour has it King Kenny is in the driving seat, which makes sense as he would get the sympathy vote no matter what happened until the new owners arrive.

Not worried at all about Harry's situation. It will be sorted.

On his way to becoming a Spurs legend?

That would be Billy Nick ........ so a fair way left yet. And Billy, BTW, as great as he was, was NOT Shankly.

Jun 9, 2010 at 11:11 AM | Unregistered CommenterTommyHarmer

....and Shankly wasn't Paisley.
