Potential qualifiers for the CL

Thought I'd share this for clairty. Although tbh, there's still a chance of remaining a tad confused for a while longer until all leagues are done and dusted.

Thanks to Goonbasher (GG.co.uk) for bringing all this to our attention.

As you know we are seeded for the 4th round of the non-Champions qualifying round. Seeded and unseeded teams mentioned below relate directly to who we might be playing (remember these are 4th round seeded and unseeded sides - if you click on the link at the bottom of this blog post, then you can see the seeded/unseeded sides for round 1/2 including both non-champions and champions).

Seeded teams coef. Unseeded teams coef.
------------------------ --- ---------------- ------------------------ --- ----------------

As you can see above, some clubs still need to get past round three (*3) which means if those qualifying from round 3 survive, then we potentially face either:

Fenerbahce

Dinamo Kiev

Sampdoria

Auxerre (possibly)

or 'another side'

(sides that might get through the second round, i.e. Celtic, Braga, PAOK, AA Gent and a few others).

And if (/prays) we get through that round, then (just to get you wet in anticipation) the below gives you an idea of what the four pots the clubs are drawn from will look like, allowing you to fantasise about some of the possible away trips and visits to the Lane we could be in for. Although just to reiterate - the below at this current time is just a prediction thanks to the sides (including us) that still have some work to do.

This is great news, but I could have sworn that I read a while back that UEFA changed the qualifying rules, which meant that there was no "seeding system".. just a big hat and pot luck!? Or am I just imagining things?

Hope not Hudd, otherwise its squeaky bum time again.

It's squeaky bum time anyways Jep.

Barca, Real, Spurs, Spartak :D Woooooaw :)

May 17, 2010 at 1:31 PM | Unregistered CommenterRamsesV

just looking at the potential scheduling for it all. the uefa website...
http://www.uefa.com/uefa/management/newsid=1478141.html
doesnt mention a fourth round but it does mention a playoff. is that what we are in?

May 17, 2010 at 1:33 PM | Unregistered Commenterspursmass

Yes, technically it's a play-off because whomever wins is into the group stages.

May 17, 2010 at 1:34 PM | Unregistered CommenterKlaxons in the Wind

I hope, if we qualifier, we get the biggest badest sides in Europe.

May 17, 2010 at 1:35 PM | Unregistered CommenterThe Machine

*qualify

May 17, 2010 at 1:35 PM | Unregistered CommenterThe Machine

Fenerbahce / Dinamo Kiev / Sampdoria / Auxerre

Fucking hell. Not exactly easy is it?

May 17, 2010 at 1:36 PM | Unregistered CommenterOops

it's good news we're seeded but even so sampdoria would not be a good draw.

May 17, 2010 at 1:37 PM | Unregistered Commenterbof

I keep hearing that they are dropping the seeding for this year for the first time. Is this not the case then????

May 17, 2010 at 1:38 PM | Unregistered CommenterEssex_yid

Last years play-off teams

May 17, 2010 at 1:42 PM | Unregistered CommenterYiddo

We are hearing the same rumours essex_yid!!

May 17, 2010 at 1:44 PM | Unregistered CommenterHuddMaster

Seeding dropped? News to me. Isn't it a bit late to announce this type of massive change? Would think they'd have confirmed far earlier. If anyone does find anything to suggest its happening - do tell.

May 17, 2010 at 1:46 PM | Registered Commenterspooky

i think we need to buy a couple of world class players to strike fear into out opponents...

not to mention the fact that a word class player, out of form can still win you a game.

May 17, 2010 at 1:47 PM | Unregistered CommenterPristar

Basically, we could get Inter, Real Madrid and Spartak Moscow in the group stage.

Cumming. My. Pants.

May 17, 2010 at 1:51 PM | Unregistered CommenterTruYid

All the rounds previous to the play-off are still using seedings this year so can't see the play-off being the only round not too. Go to wikipedia and search 2010/2011 Champions League and you'll see the format and who's been seeded so far.

May 17, 2010 at 1:52 PM | Unregistered CommenterJC

We clearly deserve a bye to ease us in gently.

May 17, 2010 at 1:54 PM | Unregistered CommenterWinterWeekend61

I hoep your right JC just i heard some twat on talksport saying how the tough bit starts now as seeding is being dropped although it looks like they were talking shit.... i hope ;)

May 17, 2010 at 1:56 PM | Unregistered CommenterEssex_yid

Seeding has been dropped in the past but not this year.

Some tough non seeded teams there but many more crap unseeded teams will join them by the time the draw takes place.

Seeding should mean we get the second leg at home as well.

May 17, 2010 at 1:58 PM | Unregistered CommenterDoglegz

I just checked and Spurs are seeded number 3 in the non-champions section of the play-off draw -- Sevilla, Werder, Ajax and Zenit are the other seeded teams providing they qualify from previous round.

If Spurs win their play-off they will be placed in pot 3 for the group stage draw. We will be the third highest coefficent in pot 3 so if a load of unseeded teams (from previous rounds) qualify instead of their bigger opponents, Spurs could be pushed into the second pot -- though highly unlikely.

May 17, 2010 at 2:14 PM | Unregistered CommenterJC

i do hope it wil not be AA Gent (The Belgian small version of Spurs btw) ... on the plus side at least one of my both teams would go into the CL (Spurs without a shadow of a doubt) but i would be heartbroken

It is the first time that both of my teams qualify for the Cl quali and both of them in the same year ...

May 17, 2010 at 2:23 PM | Unregistered Commenterbelgian spur

Sorry guys, it maybe a daft question but I have no idea about it. What is the coefficient supposed to represent and how is it worked out?

May 17, 2010 at 2:28 PM | Unregistered CommenterSheffSpur

Sheff ... there you go http://www.xs4all.nl/~kassiesa/bert/uefa/calc.html#details

May 17, 2010 at 2:41 PM | Unregistered CommenterRamsesV

So its anyone from the following:

Sampdoria
Auxerre
Fenerbahce
Dinamo Kiev
Sporting Braga
Celtic
PAOK Salonika
Young Boys
Gent
A club from Romania (yet to be decided)

Sampdoria and Auxerre are the only ones that will not have to come through a (prior) qualifying round. Zenit and Ajax do. Although don't think we'll be facing them.

May 17, 2010 at 2:45 PM | Unregistered CommenterHazard

Hazard, we won't know until the end of the third qualifying round

May 17, 2010 at 2:47 PM | Unregistered CommenterRamsesV

Cheers RamsesV

May 17, 2010 at 2:49 PM | Unregistered CommenterSheffSpur

Sampdoria just lost their manager -- might mess them up a bit?

May 17, 2010 at 2:49 PM | Unregistered CommenterJC

no portuguese teams in the whole CL this year.??

You have to add benfica to pot 3 (most likely) then braga and porto....porto currently 3rd and will most likely qualify..so will be seeded for 'play-off' if they get through and then most likely pot 2/3 if they make final 32 teams,

Similarly it is likely that olympiakos have a good chance too of qualifying..

not gonna be easy at all.

May 17, 2010 at 2:50 PM | Unregistered Commenternutch

The Co effcient is a working number based on the Von Heidleborg Principal. It is a taken from the Barber Index of each club and transofrmed using the Von Heidleborg Principal. The Co Effcient indacates compatability both within and external to the UEFA system of team rankings. Got that?

May 17, 2010 at 2:52 PM | Unregistered CommenterBig Johna

The coefficient uses the following stats to tell us the level of favouritism of all the teams in the competition
A = no. of games played in CL in the past 10 years x 1.5
B = no. of games played in CL before 10 years x 1.25
C = no. of non-CL European games played in the last 10 years
D = no. of goals scored in CL - no. of goals conceded in CL
E = no. of goals scored in non - CL games /no. of goals conceded in non-CL games
F = no. of shots on goal/no of corners conceded in CL games
G = no. of minutes of added time played in CL games in the past 10 years
H = no. of substitutions of non-home-grown players in all European games
I = no. of eggs your goalkeeper likes to have for breakfast
J = no. of squad members whose wives have slept with John Terry
K = the price of a Mars Bar in the newsagent closest to the stadium (as the crow flies in a northerly direction)

And so you can see that Spurs coefficient is 56.71, largely because of the JT factor.

May 17, 2010 at 2:55 PM | Unregistered Commenterlily

So if 2 of Zenit, Bremen and Seville failed to get through we could possibly make no.2 pot...depending on who beat them and their ranking.

May 17, 2010 at 3:23 PM | Unregistered CommenterDevonshirespur

so assuming we make the groups, you cannot be drawn against your own countrymen, so from pot 1 we would get Seville* AC Milan, Inter, Barca or Bayern.

WOW, any of AC, Inter or Barca would be amazing. If we avoided Seville and Barca, then there would be a good chance of getting Real, who are in Pot 2.

Group of death/fun (depending on how you view things):

Inter Milan
Real Madrid
Tottenham
Spartak Moscow

Arsenals group last season was AZ Alkmaar, Olympiakos & Standard Liege. they then beat Porto and lost to Barca......The Goons are so smug about their CL participation but when you look at who they faced this season, its a joke.....all except Barc are equivalent to mid table EPL or worse. They lost to the first decent team they met, and boy were they made to look stupid!

May 17, 2010 at 3:41 PM | Unregistered CommenterDevonshirespur

Lets just focus on getting a crap team with the second leg at home.

May 17, 2010 at 3:44 PM | Unregistered CommenterDoglegz

Surreal we are even discussing CL football. Pinch me.

May 17, 2010 at 3:51 PM | Unregistered CommenterGrim down south

Grim Down South I agree. THought I was on the wrong blog for a sec there.
We'd better not lose in qualifiers! I'm not going to be in the country for those and if I miss the oney ever champions league game, (granted it's a qualifier) I will be gutted. Then again would I really want to watch us lose?

May 17, 2010 at 3:57 PM | Unregistered CommenterFox Mulder

Would be sick if we got into the group stage and I'll be sick if we don't.

May 17, 2010 at 3:59 PM | Unregistered CommenterOllie

Yes, Hazard - wait a moment there are several teams that you didn't mention that we could face! By my calculations we could face one of 60-odd teams - depending on who beats who. Granted - it is highly unlikely that the team from the Faroe Islands are going to win 3 games to get to the playoffs, but there are several other teams capable of getting there.
Devonshirespur - That group of death cannot happen if Inter and Real Madrid are top seeds.
Let's just avoid Kiev, Axuerre, Sampdoria, Fenerbahce and the Glasgow boys in Qualifying. I'll take ANY group draw - it will be a learning experience one way or the other.

May 17, 2010 at 4:42 PM | Unregistered CommenterTonyTott

I can't see which pot liverpool are in.

Is there an extra coefficient I've missed somewhere?

May 17, 2010 at 5:09 PM | Unregistered Commentertricky

dont worry about the seedings, remember Pompey in the FA Cup semi-final? I was so happy to have drawn them, but what happened next? i would rather a good team come and we play our best game. i dont want a wolves, pompey or burnley game ever again.

May 17, 2010 at 6:12 PM | Unregistered CommenterPav

Don't care who we get, just Bring it on!

May 17, 2010 at 8:28 PM | Unregistered CommenterWinterWeekend61

Personally I can't wait for the qualifying to start I think quite a few team would want to miss us due to what we did to Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea at home. If we get a good result in the away leg we will qualify

May 17, 2010 at 8:36 PM | Unregistered CommenterRleespurs

Thanks for a very illuminating set of posts. Do we really give a fuck? we are in the cl and need to win some games. Lets just do it for gods sake. COYS

May 17, 2010 at 10:11 PM | Unregistered Commenterrickportugal

As long as we focus on our game 110%, it won't matter who we face in the qualifiers. My only concern is how fired up and how prepared will our boys be when the match starts in August? We have to get rid of Defoe and Pav and replace them with one deadly striker like Torres. An alternate is to bring Berba back home to relight his fire with Keane :).

May 17, 2010 at 10:19 PM | Unregistered CommenterIaG

IaG.... Two knackered strikers in place of Defoe and Pav?
nah.
Not on your fucking nelly love.

May 17, 2010 at 10:40 PM | Unregistered CommenterMatty K

Auxerre will be no problem. Samp wont be as hard as ppl are thinking. Fenerbache are a big worry, Kiev too. Tough away days. Also I think its much better to have the 2nd leg away....there is always more pressure to win at home in the 2nd leg....2nd legs can be more open too meaning away goals count against you. Better to win 1-0 in 1st leg at home then you go away and the home team cant come out and attack cos they know an away goal will killl them. Best play the home leg 1st and play without the pressure of absolutely having to win.

I rate our chances of progression at 80/20. There are only 1 or 2 teams we should genuinely fear.

May 17, 2010 at 11:49 PM | Unregistered CommenterFather Chrisman

PAOK Salonika or Young Boys will do nicely... the football team that is.

May 18, 2010 at 3:11 AM | Unregistered CommenterJC_Yid

Hi Tonytt

Qualifying champions and qualifying non-champions are kept completely seperate in the new format (i.e. there will be two 1st rounds 2 2nd rounds, etc). Therefore most of those 60 odd teams have qualified as champions (inc faroe islands) and wont be in our section of the qualifiers.

As for Inter and Real, it could happen as Real are not top seeds but 2nd seeds. The top seeds are Inter, AC, Sevilla, Barcelona, Bayern, Arsenal, Chelsea and United.

COYS!

May 18, 2010 at 11:54 AM | Unregistered Commentersmreid

TonyTott

That group can happen because Real are in Pot 2....seems wrong that Seville are ranked higher than Real but they have had much success in the UEFA Cup, which is the reason why our ranking is higher than you'd expect as numbies to the Champions League

May 18, 2010 at 1:06 PM | Unregistered CommenterDevonshirespur

I almost don't care who we draw in the Group stages as long as we get there. Sure, I'd like to go far but the priority is getting past the initial hurdle, partly because that's where the riches begin and partly because I want Real, Inter, Barca, Bayern, AC, Lyon, Ajax, Benfica etc, etc at the lane. I won't be angry at a campaign that ends with Spurs 3rd in the group behind Real and Lyon but I reckon that we have a chance against several of the teams in Lyon's seeding position.
