Deadline Transfer Day Special

Sang to the melody of My Way (original lyrics by Paul Anka and sang by the legend that is Frank Sinatra). You'll have to do with your own voice in this instance as Ol' Blue Eyes is otherwise engaged.

In celebration of transfer deadline day. Its been a quiet under-stated January. There's not that much to sing about.

And now the end is near
And so we face the final ticker
Sky Sports will say it's clear
They'll state he's signed to which they're certain

But no, he never signed
They made it up it's jack-a-nory
And more, much more than this
Sky Sports News is just pony

Keano, he's had a few
Not least Liverpool, but let's not mention
He did what he had to do
And we saw him flop with out-right distinction

He went to his boyhood club
Rafa showed no love he was no Stevie Heighway

He's ruined, much more than that
He's gone to Celtic

Yes there were times, I'm sure you read
When the ITK community bit off more than they fed
He's on his way, oh no he's not,
He's having a medical, or perhaps he's not
And they all made it up...as per usual

I've sighed, I've cried and cried
I've cried my fill, it's like Chimbonda
And now as tears fail to subside
I don’t find it at all convincing

To think we wanted more
And may I say a f*cking lot more
But no, oh no, my God
We've re-signed Younes Kaboul...

For what is a Spurs fan what has he got
If not a DVD then he has not
To see Sandro or Ruud Van Nist
And not some ex-Chelsea from the French Riv
The official website shows the tabloids blow
In the Knows are just pony...

Yes, In the Knows are just pony…

Happy Deadline Transfer Day people. Enjoy your evening. Don't stay up too late.

You'll regret taking the piss out of Kaboul Spooky. The man is a BEAST of a player. A beast!

Sandro to sign 10 seconds to midnight. You watch.

SERIOUS POINT: If we end the day with FIVE strikers on the books, Harry's inability to deal with four will be compounded.

'One Million for Keane' was a real f**k up for a '50p and a Snickers' man.

Sky Sports News say Keano's off up to Celtic for talks on a loan move.

Feb 1, 2010 at 5:09 PM | Unregistered CommenterR.J

Keano, fair enough. My concern is lack of cover at RB

Feb 1, 2010 at 5:17 PM | Unregistered CommenterY4L

Mind you if Pav was fit, I'm sure he would hav gone somewhere

Feb 1, 2010 at 5:18 PM | Unregistered CommenterY4L

Not fussed at losing Keane - not like he's made a major impact this season.
Right-back is a definite concern, with Corluka the only option at the moment. Presumably when BAE is fit, he can switch sides as cover?! Or is Chimbonda coming in AGAIN as part of the Hutton deal.......

Feb 1, 2010 at 5:20 PM | Unregistered CommenterWalkerboy

I can't understand the decision to loan out both Hutton and Naughton. Bizarre. Presumably one or the other would be recalled in the event that we needed a spare? Bear in mind that if Daws or Bassong pick up an injury, Charlie may need to switch to CB. Then we'd have gone from 4 right backs to none!

Feb 1, 2010 at 5:26 PM | Unregistered Commenter2P8G

LOL, if Chimbonda does come back from 'over that hill', then it would be a classic 'Arry signing/sale/re-sign!!

Feb 1, 2010 at 5:27 PM | Unregistered CommenterY4L

A few more injuries and we'll be moaning about not having a big enough squad to challenge for that final CL place!

Feb 1, 2010 at 5:30 PM | Unregistered CommenterY4L

Could it be that with Kaboul coming in and no azza, we may change formation (long over due plan B perhaps,,,?) and go 3-5-2.....

Feb 1, 2010 at 5:34 PM | Unregistered CommenterY4L

Kaboul at RB. Lets face it he would probably do a better job than Charlie. But it is stupid that we have loaned the other 2 out.

Feb 1, 2010 at 5:35 PM | Unregistered CommenterDevonshirespur

To be honest gutted with this trasfer window. Can't see the logic in letting 2 right backs leave the club. Maddnes

Feb 1, 2010 at 5:48 PM | Unregistered CommenterBrazilyid

When you are struggling to hold on to leads you need the option of a big strong CM who can tighten things up and help close the game out. Jenas cant do it. None of ours can. One injury to Palacios and we have nobody tackling at all.

So why are we so allergic to signing CMs??? Been the same for years as we ignored the need for a Palacios type. Now we only have three but still try to manage with all the big games coming up. Crazy.

Anyway, I think EG will do great for us but would been better if Pav was on his way rather than Robbie and Kaboom is decent enough cover for the defence. Not all bad but every time we drop leads I will be looking to this window and wondering why we didn't sign Muntari or Parker or similar to toughen us up in the middle.

Feb 1, 2010 at 6:27 PM | Unregistered CommenterTed

keane to celtic now looks a cert. 'arry on SSN saying that chairman asked 'wot e fort, an e sed "ees too good a player not to start" an that ees a big celtic man'. Nailed on, Pav must be pleased at least. Sorry, I mean Eidur.

Feb 1, 2010 at 6:29 PM | Unregistered CommenterTricky

We have wasted this window, just as we did the January window in the Lasangegate season.
None of the players we have bought actually improve the team, we have not bought cover for Palacious or Gomes and we now have one right back, who could have covered at centre back, if we had someone else to play right back.
At the start of the window, we were supposed to be buying players from Harrods such as Sandro, RVN, Hunteelar.
How come we ended up shopping in Poundland ?

Feb 1, 2010 at 6:31 PM | Unregistered CommenterDAVID

Ted, I can see Kaboul being called upon for DM as cover for wilso. Kaboul is strong in the tackle, comfortable on the ball and likes to be able to push higher up the pitch sometimes. remind you of anyone?

I wouldn't want him as a CB as first choice, but not a bad understudy still, and it means that we don't need to consider Hudd having to drop back if woody, King and either of the other two are unavailable at any given point in hte second half of the season (which is not unforseeable).

Feb 1, 2010 at 6:31 PM | Unregistered CommenterTricky

DAVID - Sandro will happen in summer now prob, as it was all to do with negotiating with who owns the commercial rights to the player (not as simple as some might think) and to be honest bringing a player in Jan from overseas seldom reaps immediate rewards (EPL difference, relocating, schedule diffference, etc). RVN was a bargain basement deal for an aging player on loan, Huntelaar is still an enigma, doubt he's worth the money being asked and is too much of a gamble for money we don't have.

As a more general, 'why are going for x over y'. Consider one thing, no-one seems to know what player values are currently, so who is going to want to pay over the odds until they know the true value of their current intangible assets. the double digit growth in player values was propped up by the competition between clubs for players, but debt figures are now hitting hard and no one has cash or the facility to spunk over the odds. So Johnson (who is a decent player) goes for £7 mil where three years ago he would have been £10-£15 mil (a la bentley).

Especially with £200 mill + needed to finance rebuilding the stadium, it's called the bigger picture.

I personally very much doubt we will finish 4th, but we should well be in europe next season, and that still sits in with the clubs business plans, even if it doesn't fit with the fans currently elevated expectations.

Sorry, but it's just the way it is.

Feb 1, 2010 at 6:41 PM | Unregistered CommenterTricky

ROFL Spooky.

Feb 1, 2010 at 6:50 PM | Unregistered CommenterFlav

TRICKY,
I can see a lot of sense in a lot of what you say, but we are no stronger now than we were at the start of the window and any chance we had of finishing fourth has now gone in my opinion.
I believe this season was our best chance as Man City will be stronger next year and will take Liverpools place if they really are in decline.
Just gutted really as I think we have blown it again, both on the pitch and in the transfer window.

Feb 1, 2010 at 6:54 PM | Unregistered CommenterDAVID

Completely agree with the above (DAVID). Unless Gudjohnson turns out to be the second coming of Christ, it's hello Europa League.

Feb 1, 2010 at 7:02 PM | Unregistered CommenterTMWNN

@Tricky

All you said is fine if we were in the familiar mid table position and had time and opportunity to try players out and let them learn on the job. In that case yes sure use Kaboul as a makeshift DM and see how it goes. If we finish 9th or 11th doesn't matter too much.

But this season we have key game after key game to try to make the most of being in 4th place in February. So it does not work the same. The risks are completely different. That is why we should have bought a proper DM like Parker or Muntari or similar who would have cost a lot less that Pav or Bentley. Rather than making do and hoping Kaboul who has never played there for us can deliver from game one in the crucial games ahead. It is short sighted and a missed opportunity.

Feb 1, 2010 at 7:08 PM | Unregistered CommenterTed

to say i am pissed with the wwindow shopping is an understatement, we have the best chance to reach the champs league ever, with city still finding their feet, Villa and Everton not on song and the scousers cocking up. What do we do to make a fist of it and nail that forth place,
Yeb we buy a Chelsea reject 3 years passed his sell by date and bring back Younes who couldn't hack it first time round, Christ even Boatang looks good down at Portsmouth.
Not happy with that Harry then ships out our two best right backs on loan F*CK we didn't even get proper dosh for them.
Nice wheeling and Dealing Harry have you forgotten you work for Spurs now not f*cking Portmouth !!!!!!!!!
Yours Sincerely
RIGHT PISSED OFF

CATCHER, TED, TMWNN,
We all seem to share the same views and disapointment, but to cheer us all up, just think it could have been worse, we could have signed MIDO!!!
He must be approaching sumo status!!!

Feb 1, 2010 at 7:18 PM | Unregistered CommenterDAVID

Let's have some perspective

The top players are not going to be moving halfway through the season. We can only get players that are surplus to requirements at other clubs.

Feb 1, 2010 at 7:23 PM | Unregistered Commenteranon

Ted, one thing might be worth noting, maybe it's because of deals like Bentley and Pav, that our erstwhile chairman (and one court order away from a stalking injunction against the esteemed blogger) is reluctant to pay much at all.

Kaboul was perhaps getting an asset we can sell on in the future, whilst providing a 4th choice defender (let's ignore woody for a while as it would take a couple of months to be match fit after so long a lay off) and maybe even a 3rd choice DM (and only harry will tell you if he is capable of that I am just speculating on what I have seen of him at fratton park) his arrival also means we aren't owed £5 mill when Pompey eventually go into administration.

As for Parker, too injury prone to be valuable to the squad at this time, just my opinion. and Muntari didn't want to come, so that's the end of that one.

Consider the possibility that maybe we are no stronger but have balanced the books a bit, plus if corluka does pick up a serious injury then we can at least recall a player who will be 'match fit'.

Feb 1, 2010 at 7:30 PM | Unregistered CommenterTricky

As per mido could have been worse than that, our star signing for the window could have been Sol.

Now there's a cheery thought to end the day on.

Feb 1, 2010 at 7:31 PM | Unregistered CommenterTricky

Signing Kaboul is like touching your own arse

Feb 1, 2010 at 7:32 PM | Unregistered CommenterSpursLA

I don't want to hear about economics, especially since few know the real numbers. Notwithstanding, we should have at least recalled O'Hara and kept Naughton. Do we even have a back-up keeper?

Feb 1, 2010 at 7:53 PM | Unregistered Commenteranonymous

Apparently Keane is a Celtic boy through & through, according to 'arry. The same Keane who was a Liverpool fan??? I predict another return of the prodigal son come September....

Feb 1, 2010 at 7:59 PM | Unregistered CommenterNayim

SpursLA - is that good or bad?

Feb 1, 2010 at 8:18 PM | Unregistered CommenterLemonadeMoney

FYI - the reason johnson cost 7 mil and bentley cost 15 is because a) Johnson would have left on a free is 5 months anyway and b) johnson has never done anything in the PL, let alone scored a hat trick vs man u. I see the point you are trying to make but not a very good example.

Does Harrys 'wheeling and dealings' re robbie keane represent the worst bit of transfer business in the recorded universe? a 15mil player released on a free 1 year later? Great stuff

Feb 1, 2010 at 8:28 PM | Unregistered Commenterchrisman

Lemonade.., I guess it's not all that bad !!

Feb 1, 2010 at 8:30 PM | Unregistered CommenterSpursLA

David asked "How come we ended up shopping in Poundland ?" I suspect we are tightening our belts because we've got to fork out for a new stadium soon. Once we start filling that up we can spend a bit more on players, but I would hope we can learn to avoid wasting money like we seem to on signings that we don't play and end up loaning out.

Feb 2, 2010 at 12:06 AM | Unregistered CommenterRoman's Interpreter

Gudjohnsen is something on the order of 30 or 31, hardly past it, and he's got more about him than Keane does. I also think Kaboul isn't as bad as everyone seems to think he is. Hopefully Pav gets more of a run out, as I don't think he's been given a fair shake.

Watching the game against the Brum, Palacios still seemed determined to give the ball away more than once, Dawson in a fit of confused glee continually hoofed the ball up the park, and despite Bentley's performance, he did a couple of gay backheels that almost opened us up completely. Defoe also needs to pull his head out of his arse, goal notwithstanding, him and Crouch played like shit. These issues need sorting, and that's far more important than any transfers that have or haven't happened. Everyone knows this window is a fucking lark, and our standing at the end of the season will be determined by the players on the pitch, not the players who may or may not be coming.

Feb 2, 2010 at 1:57 AM | Unregistered Commenterjewbanker

Spot on Jewbanker...

I'm so happy to know I won't see Keane in a Spurs shirt again. Maybe over time, I can forget his traito-ness and remember the down-to-earth winner who initially signed for us from Leeds. There wasn't any unjustified inclusions and pointless shouting then, just dedicated football (Spurs 4 - Everton 3 anyone?)

The Jenas NIGHTMARE continues however!!!! ....When, for goodness sake, wil IT end????? Somebody save us!

Feb 2, 2010 at 7:10 AM | Unregistered CommenterRonnie_Nairobi

That is just awful

Feb 2, 2010 at 8:22 AM | Unregistered CommenterShannon

Don't want to hear about economics, fair enough. Do you want the staduim redeveloped though? Sorry but as Roman's interpreter stated, it's all linked.

January is not the time for speculating on 'unknowns', the squad we have has got us to top 6 so far, there's every chance that we can finish there now come may. Now who would have taken that at the start of hte season?

And having reflected, kaboul isn't a bad signing as cover (which we will need) as he has EPL expereince and the manager is already aware of strengths and weaknesses.

As for Keane, well all those frustrated by his inclusion ahead of Pav and generally his dip in form have got their wish. Where are all the 'I blame Robbie Keane' fans going to go now?

Spooky, might be time to resurect, the I blame Harry signing (nb. Lovin' the crouch assist appreciation society one - keep up the good work fella.)

Feb 2, 2010 at 8:33 AM | Unregistered CommenterTricky

mido looks pretty fit btw guys , he really does ... he came to play for my boyhood club at 18 and was one of the best players we ever had at that tender age , shame he is messed up mentally ..;

Feb 2, 2010 at 8:55 AM | Unregistered Commenterbelgian spur

Mido has signed for £1000 a week, and apparently that is perceived to be a bargain. Not sure if there was a signing on fee, but if players are willing to drop wages to join clubs then it's no bad thing in my book.

And so the return to normality begins............... (yeah right!)

Feb 2, 2010 at 9:00 AM | Unregistered CommenterTricky

The keane loan to celtic is a masterstroke by harry! Lets face it his confidence couldn't get much lower, so we loan him out to celtic who are bound to play him every game without a doubt in a league that is so poor even keane on current form would rip it up. So by the summer his confidence will be back on track and then we get him back in top form. Lovely jubley! Or for those who still hate keane, we sell him on for an inflated price. Either way everyone wins. Still feel sorry for the guy though.
