Spurs v Villa: the tweets

1st Half

If Spurs win today, we can win the title, if we lose, we'll finish 7th

Gomes; Hutton, Kaboul, Dawson, Assou-Ekotto; Lennon, Modric, Palacios, Bale; Van der Vaart; Defoe = Glory

One minute gone and we already look f****** s***. I'm switching off.

Liked the work for the Defoe effort

Gomes. The man with two brains. The two brains of lobotomised monkeys.

@PhilBlundell Yep. It lacked something. But he's lacked that extra buzz since his return. He'll come good (re: Defoe's effort)

Villa fans giving Bale special treatment. Not getting that.

Illustration of why we are way off the finished article. Too open at the back. No stamp of authority in the middle.

Did look like 1-0 to us though. Can we have one of our two reviews please?

@Becky_Fowler it's regulation Spurs (re: end to end football)

Villa fans now celebrating goal keeper catches

Lovely (1-0 Spurs)

Wonderful cross field ball that to start it off

RT @Will_Hoe: 'Van Der Vaart' roughly translates into English as 'Sit On My Face'.

huttons cross was quite funny though

it was the most apologetic cross I've seen, 'here I come someone get on the end of me, seriously, i'm on my way in'

lets have another one

If only Modric had a 16 out of 20 with his shooting

RT @xActionMaNx: Am I allowed say Defoe has been poor ?? #Coys

@xActionMaNx Thanks for the hoodoo

Soft soft soft red card, ridiculous decision

When are refs going to be held accountable for being ****? it's a fair question.

Gonna be a long game. it's simple. We'll still create chances. We just have to be clinical.

@SpursSimon No intent, assistant gave it (re: red card)

That's it Spurs. Fight.

@aronmoore vdv = mental strength

Bale needs a half time hug from arry

DVD of the last five minutes of the half now available for download at the online Spurs Shop

2nd Half

Obvious half-time assessment: We need to be scoring the next goal

@davidwong1966 We can score a second for sure

People who call BAE - A&E...suck it up

Is Defoe on a two match ban then? (yes I know, we'll appeal hopefully)

Beautiful (2-0 Spurs)

Devastating yet calm, controlled and composed counter

@TomTraubert2009 Sunday Supplement would have a special 3 hour show to discuss it (re: if someone like Utd had scored the goal)

Here we go...

Cheap goal, nobody's fault, but cheap (1-2)

@TomTraubert2009 Drama queen. (re: Is Gomes a soft lad)

RT @Will_Hoe: BLOW THE F***** WHISTLE.

Right - off to get p*****d. Laters.

@bglendenning Okay for Spurs players to smile at the end of the game? Just asking.

@Spooky23 Beating Villa surely entitles them to do laps of honour and pour big tubs of water over Harry Redknapp

@ The open bus parade is today at 2pm

Conclusions:

Palacios is back baby. Superb work rate and decent distribution. Modric and van der Vaart were classy. The cross field pass from Luka just absolutely fantastic and vdv's goals sublime. His finish for the first was quality but the flick to start the second and the patient yet pacey work leading up to the winner was just beautiful (team effort mind). Kaboul was powerful (could have defended their goal better perhaps or was Wilson at fault with his sole mistake losing the ball in attack?) and BAE undroppable (one word: backheel). Hutton not overlapping and getting in the way of Azza. Crouch doing a job when brought on. All good.

Never a red for Defoe, thought the ref and his assistants were all over the shop with their decision making. But the strength in character (illustrated by the possession towards the end of the first half) was first rate. Professional and without panic.

Bale was kept quiet but instrumental in the winner. Harry showing passion on the touchline dealing with the repugnant Pires. Rafa showing passion in the dugout too which is something you want to see from all players. The will and determination to win because wins breed a winning mentality and that breeds momentum.

Enjoying Christmas? Robert Pires, suck it up.

Spooky
Defoe is a bollox. He's no team player. Okay it wasn't a red, but he threw his arm in a stupid motion. He's just not a team player. When you look at the contribution of VDV or Moderic, God Damn it Defoe could be sooooo productive. he's a selfish little bollix that doesn't think before he acts rashly. He did it last year and, just as this team are striving for that next level, he goes and does it again. Someone should kick his ass.

Great win with 10 men. We need to keep it up. Let's have 3 more over the new year period.

We need a world class forward.

Soft red, ref poor throughout but you must not give ref the opportunity to balls it up so cheaply! I know Defoe always jumps like that, but it rarely gets him anywhere anyway - he needs to stop. I am glad au watched it live because match of the day's highlights are getting worse and worse. They completely ignored the excellent passing possession that we had for 10 minutes of the end of the first half with a man down away from home, protecting a lead! sublime. Whole 11 performed until the sending off - then whole 10th. Great Team performance.

Okay cookiebun you try jumping without using your arms...see how high you can jump. Watch what a high jumper does when jumping. Football seems to be trying rewrite the law of human physics with this type if dismissal. No way did he lead with his elbow, he didn't take his eye off the ball and his arm was straight so how can it be a red card??? So in conclusion how is Defoe deemed selfish and not a team player. You sort have always got something to complain about. Glass half empty? Get a life and get behind our boys because they are doing us proud this season! COYS!

Hutton's assist was more deliberate than most think. How many times did we cross it in the air? Hardly ever. We had Defoe and vdv up front, so there was little point in crossing high to the little men. This was well planned. I watched Fulham earlier, and they had Andrew Johnson up front, kept flinging the ball to him in the air to no avail. Harry has more of a plan than he is given credit for. Wilson - when given license to do that - was immense. Lennon disappeared for much of second half, but that wasn't his fault - he was great too. Tracked back well, and great assist. Modric pass for first goal was perfection. We doubled villa. We got 2 points out of them last year. Good stuff.

Dec 27, 2010 at 9:08 AM | Unregistered CommenterTonyTott

Tonytott, all players jump like that, in those positions except defenders who are coming onto the ball. Look at the angle of the cross. You physically cannot get any purchase on the ball in that position without bringing your arms up. It looks exaggerated because he is a shortarse! Stop whingeing, didn't hear any of this when the bloke was banging them in last season! Support your team's players ffs!

Dec 27, 2010 at 9:11 AM | Unregistered CommenterJulian

Hey Julian. I'm not complaining about the rest of the team. This team is on the verge of greatness and I see Defoe as a player who feels he needs the glory for himself. It's not about him it's about this team. Modric, VDV, Palacious, Bale, even Lennon were making chances and running all over the place for each other. When you fly around like a shuttlecock with arms flaying, with half an hour gone and no chance of winning the ball, your not thinking. Defoe doesn't think he wants to score for himself. He needs to pass the ball more like Lennon did for goal 2 yesterday. There's no way Defoe would have made that pass and the game would have ended 1-1. He needs to learn.

Defoe almost got a foot to the ball befoe VDV for be first goal, Crouch did a great defensive job, love the effort he puts in every game, wish he could shoot

Dec 27, 2010 at 9:24 AM | Unregistered CommenterSpursLA

cookiebun, i think were in some ways fortunate to have a player like defoe. Yes hes not the most unselfish, but that means hes always wanting to score, something a great forward always needs to do. Defoe is one of those that when fully fit and with the ball at his feet only needs a yard before he pulls the trigger, and that leads to goals. hes just come back from injury and so i dont expect him to be at his best either. Just gutted cos im going on tuesday and wont be able to see VDV and defoe link up!

Dan
Have to say I would much prefer him to Pav. He could be coming back though just when we need him most and well rested.

Dec 27, 2010 at 10:36 AM | Unregistered Commentercookiebun

Defoe's jumping never gets him anywhere? I saw him jump the other week, win the header, flick the ball on to VDV who laid it through to Bale, who scored a goal....that got us somewhere!!

Needs to pass the ball like Lennon did? Lennon is a winger, it's his job to pass the ball to the forwards, Defoe is a striker, it's his job to look to put the ball in the back of the net. Honestly, if Defoe's passing game is your prime concern, you've not got enough to worry about!

Dec 27, 2010 at 11:16 AM | Unregistered CommenterJohnnyB

bloody hell guys. ok so Defoe jumping got him somewhere ONCE - against clichy (someone his own size). What difference does that make to what I said. To me, there is nothing worse than a striker committing foul or getting sent off when attacking! I am not criticising Defoe. All I am doing is suggesting that he will be better off jumping without sticking is ARM in peoples' faces. He looked pretty dangerous until that point, and could have cost us the game. I support my team, that is why I want Defoe to improve and not do silly things like that! You know that Defoe has been sent off about 6 or 7 times in his career? Careless play. Anyway chuffed. Great game.

Dec 27, 2010 at 11:29 AM | Unregistered CommenterTonyTott

Defoe is a striker. Christ is that what he is. You'd never think it. Kaboul's a better striker.

Dec 27, 2010 at 12:11 PM | Unregistered Commentercookiebun

Very funny seeing Harry telling Pires what he thought of him :)

Also I see Carroll scored yet again. What he could do with our midfield service eh.

Harry, Harry, sign him up !

re: team spirit on bench. Moment at the end of the game, ball with villa near our bench and not sure what but something happpened and the whole bench got up and were unified in there unhappiness about something

Dec 27, 2010 at 2:35 PM | Unregistered Commenterspursmass

Team spirit is fantastic at the minute you can see every player giving it 100% for each other. We just don't buckle and choke. The Man Utd game at home will tell us just how much we've progressed.

Spurs. Top drawer on the pitch, top drawer in the dugout.

Jordan is a mentalist.

Dec 27, 2010 at 4:48 PM | Unregistered CommenterThe Machine

Johnny B's statement = LIKE. Defoe winning the 50/50 in the air at the new library was a match changing moment.

Re: the Pires link: Jordan just stands still and gives a kind of "I don't need to speak, Clint Eastwoodesque, fuck with me if you like, just make sure you've paid your BUPA, sonny boy" stare. Love it.

I reckon he's so scary he'd make ME into a good player.

COYS!

I feel like our game has stepped up measurably in the creativity department. Even with 10 men we were playing some beautiful stuff. Hope we can keep it rolling tomorrow.

FFS, Spooky, you made an old man blush. :(

Love your Facebook link to pictures. Great stuff. And if I may ask, please post more tweets like this after our games in the future. It is funny stuff and special. Much obliged.
