It's not about winning the title

This is what happens when you drink too much rum.

What do Spurs need to push for the title? I guess more of the same from the rest of the top tier of the Prem: Inconsistency. Because this year the best team might not finish in top spot. Rather the team that takes the initiative and goes on a run once or twice or thrice could well pull away and apply the pressure on those chasing. So rather than discuss the validity of whether Spurs could or what they would need to challenge for 1st place – I’d rather tag it with ‘what Spurs need to be consistent’.

The definition of consistent for us is: Remain hard to beat at home but win more games, beat the ‘small’ clubs away and continue to build on winning away to a Top 4 (traditional top 4) club.

So in terms of plays required: A world class forward. Think Drogbaesque in style, intent and end product. Another midfielder – believe it or not, I think mainly because of our injury problems if we can bring in a quality stop-gap player we’ll be ridiculous in strength of depth once all players are back. That’s it. Along with having the same back four play ahead of Gomes. The other ingredient is belief which comes with winning games and jumping over hurdles and swaggering past obstacles. Which we are doing with some pomp this season.

Like I said. You don’t have to be the best team to win the league this season. Not going on the games played thus far in the EPL. And you don’t even have to refer to it as a ‘title push’. Just aim for the momentum that would result in upwards progression. We can only effect everything within THFC. Everything outside is beyond our control.

And no, I don't 'really' think we'll finish 1st. Probably because I can think of two teams that will be a touch more consistent than us.

Can we start with three points today pretty please?

Dec 26, 2010 at 2:06 PM | Unregistered CommenterKilljoy

Can't see us losing this today. We'd have to be dogshit to allow Villa to get more than a point.

3 points today an absolute must...... Forget about title talk, we are playing a team today that are bang out of form, we though are bang in form, go for the kill today, show no mercy and win the game in style.
It's all about taking one game at a time, the opposition are shite, let's wipe the floor with them and then look forward to the barcodes. COYS !!!!!

Pax77, it's boxing day. This is prime time for games going against form...call it the Christmas hangover if you like but boxing day fixtures are as unpredictable as derbys. e.g, Wet Spam won today!

Banana skin. It's Boxing Day. It's on TV. We're expected to win.

Agree we need the four magic letters of CF/DM to complete the jigsaw.
Unfortunately the four magic symbols of ££££ will probably trump that.
I like it when Harry talking about the title as it focuses the mind.
We spent 50 years without one and it is about time we at least dared to speak its name.
Before this post gets any more 'Harry Potter' sounding I shall sign off with COYS Crouch and VDV to team up today and nail those Villans.

Cant see us winning the title , we're way behind in points and for the players to do that, we would have to go on and win a minimum 16 more games ..... Even 4th is gonna be a hard enough task now with Citeh looking good for wins ...

Our failure to get a top class striker in the summer could well prove costly and personally I blame Harry and all you Crouch Lovers for the faith you had in him to get us the goals in the premeirship .....

Another thing ,,,Villa may well be going through a rough patch but they aint the pushovers some of us Spurs fans on here and on other forums seem to think they're ...Their home record is as good as ours so Im expecting a tough game ... COYS !!

Well done Harry...... Defoe and VDV upfront .....

Increedible 36th minute Modric/Wilson swap brains. Luka does the panther like crouch and tackle routine feeding Wilson on to a mazy run with a great shot on target.

Dec 26, 2010 at 6:12 PM | Unregistered Commenteraspur

Palacios amazing first half. Modric fantastic. Shocking decisions have gone against us. Hutton had kept the ball in and it should have been 1-0 on Kaboul's goal and the Defoe red card was unjust. It's halftime and I don't feel great about our ability to keep it clean but the effort the boys are putting forth is exceptional. If we do get the win in all this, its a remarkable victory.

Dec 26, 2010 at 6:32 PM | Unregistered Commentertim

Monster effort by the boys. VdV is class. Modric & Palacios were nothing short of outstanding. It shouldn't have been that hard. Thank you Mr. Official for ruining what would have been an outstanding attacking football game but Spurs won with a huge defensive effort. Massive result given 10 men. COYS!

VDV and Modric and Wilson were awesome today. Whole team did great and looked completely up for the game. Ref was shocking.

Only down side was Defoe who still don't look sharp but at least VDV is showing our strikers what goals can be scored from our excellent midfield service.

Pires=cunt!

Dec 26, 2010 at 8:09 PM | Unregistered CommenterTerry Nutkins

Awesome result today, great effort from the boys, and a special mention to the Sarge who looks like he is starting to get some form back again. Referring to Spooky's article, consistency, pure and simple. Dawson and Kaboul should be our centre backs of the future. they should only be split up now for injuries or suspensions. If King, Woody or Gallas regain fitness, they should only get on from the bench to help kill off a game; don't just shove them into the starting XI just because they are fit, as this will upset the balance.

We do need a 'world class' striker, but we won't get one in January. We might just be able to attract one in the summer if we get through to the semi of the CL and finish fourth or better in the league. Dzeko, Benzema or Lukaku would be awesome; probably get Carrol and/or Wickham though.

To be honest, it wouldn't bother me if we didn't sign anyone in the Window, just as long as we didn't sell anyone either.

COYS

Hope we get the striker in because it is not like it has been only a couple of them off form for a short time. None of them have shown any real form all year. Our midfield creates and the strikers waste.

So even if we are skint and cannot get the top class targets we could sell Keane and Gio and get one in with the proceeds just to freshen things up a little. That should be the minimum we can do.

Dec 26, 2010 at 9:01 PM | Unregistered Commenteraspur

Spurs were massive today. Loved 'arry having a few words with that massive berk.

Dec 26, 2010 at 10:54 PM | Unregistered Commenternycyid

Great team effort today, out of 10 no one gets less than 8 in my op.
Well done lads, let's hope we get 3 points from Newcastle

Dec 27, 2010 at 1:11 AM | Unregistered CommenterSpursLA

Now then all you Palacious haters and insulters, where have you hidden. Seriously though Defoe is very unprofessional. He will miss three games for us and he did the same last year. The difference in his shooting and VDV's shooting is 'VDV believes he is going to score, whereas Defoe hopes he is going to score. Result VDV is now our leading scorer.

Dec 27, 2010 at 1:37 AM | Unregistered Commentercookiebun

Must say. I saw Carroll's last two games. The guy is for real. A physical presence up front and has a decent touch. I really believe he is a future star if his head is right. Newcastle have quite a player there and if Spurs can somehow nick him from that muppet Ashley before he sells up, we should make an effort. He isn't tied for Europe and can really help us there. He's that big physical presence that has pace.

Dec 27, 2010 at 3:23 AM | Unregistered Commentertim

I think the story of the last two games is Palacios. His return to form is unquestioned. He's back to being The Panther. He gives us that depth in midfield that we need and leaves us being a world class striker away from seriously making a run at the premiership title. We need to sell off some deadwood. Keane, Dos Santos, Bentley, O'Hara, Krancjar. But the team of Corluka, Hutton, Kaboul, Dawson, Bassong, Gallas, BAE (with King and Woodgate returning) at the back.... A midfield of Modric, Huddlestone, Lennon, Bale, Palacios, Jenas, Sandro. And a striker group of VdV, Crouch, Pav, and Defoe is plenty of depth for a serious FA, CL, and top 4 run. If we can bring in that ace striker we should do so but only if its the right guy. Great performance,
