Would you swap Modric for Carrick?

It hasn't taken long for the rumourwhores and ITK's to start suggesting that Man Utd are after Luka Modric. The maths here is easy. Harry mentions Fergie rates him, Harry mentions he has no problem re-signing ex-Spurs players and Carrick is left out of the squad for Utd's last game and therefore that quite obviously equates to a Utd bid of £10M + Carrick (28 at his peak), for our little Croatian magician (23 nowhere near his peak).

This has already been picked up by a journo. Although not sure I've seen the story hit the major tabloids just yet. Although most would ignore this as bollocks, other's would point out that life outside the Top 4 usually results in feeding the likes of Utd because players - lacking commitment to a contract they've signed - tend to know that jumping ship when the opportunity arises is impossible for them to reject (because staying at a club longer than 2 years and become part of a side building towards sustaining a challenge is far too long of a project time wise). Silverware within a season is something that cannot be ignored. The bigger get bigger the slightly less big continue to slim down to an unheathly size.

If you allowed your imagination to run wild, you might conclude that Ferguson has already began his game playing, looking to unsettle a team brimming with confidence (ok, that's just me taking the piss, because I doubt he's worried about us being a threat just because we've won 3 games on the trot). Drag it out over the course of the season, flirting in the media about the target (remember the Berbatov saga?) and then swoop in with a bid knowing full well that even if we reject the bid, it won't be long before the player agrees personal terms leaving the club threatening legal action which results in a charity donation to complete the deal. The side-effect is that a key player has gone, meaning other key players would consider doing the same which leaves us in a position of uncertainty and (Jesus wept) another transition.

With thanks to yid-soldier over at GG.co.uk for the visual

The irony is, some Spurs fans are actually hoping this rumour is based on fact. Personally, I can't see Michael making a move back down to Spurs from Champs League considering he left us for that in the first place. He's won three titles there and the biggest prize of them all. He left Spurs because he had no faith in us challenging for 4th spot. The Redknapp factor might play a part in swaying his opinion but isn't the whole point to retain some form of consistency? Carrick is excellent. But how would you go about replacing Modric? Huddlestone will once more stagnate. And let's face it, if we have aspirations for the Top 4 - and Carrick is a Top 4 player, then would Utd really let him go considering (away from the hype of the Ronaldo's of this world) how vital he's been for them since moving up there? Nothing fits, other than subjective chitter-chatter that may well come back to bite (me) us in the backside if we slump and finish 10th.

Only way to banish this would be to finish in the Top 4 and then maybe we can tap up Carrick, with the offer of Champs League and the bright(er) lights of London.

Don't you just love football? Now where's that bottle of Absinthe?

What... 10million + Carrick for Modric?
It's like offering 10,000 quid + Ford Mondeo for Aston Martin DB7?? XD

Okay Ferguson, here's what I want. In exchange for Modric, I want half
of what you got for Ronaldo (40mil quid), Wayne Rooney as backup to
Jermaine Defoe, Berbatov to clean Spurs first team's boots for the next
10 seasons, and you Ferguson, to clean Spurs stadium toilets for next
10 seasons too. Agree? No? So keep your filthy hands away, u twat!!!

Seems to me he'd be unsettling his own player as much as Modric. Carrick is a pretty frequent starter there, can't see he'd want to move back to us and he'd be wanting far higher salary than we'd offer. That's not to say they couldn't then just turn to a straight cash offer...but where does that leave Carrick, knowing he's expendable. On a side note, I'd love to see Man City using the same tactics to poach utd players...the lure of cash ain't far off the lure of silverware!

I think Carrick would be the best partner imaginable for Palacios. He's made for it. That said, no way for Modric going the other way. I would pay 15mm for him though. Tall, good passer, good read of the game, decent in a tackle and good set pieces.

Interesting... Kranjcar up for sale from Pompey (who Harry loves on the left midfield)... Modric for carrick and kranjcar and some change. This might be possible. We will see how much Harry values Modric in the next few days. Either harry pulls off the trade and brings in Kranjcar and Carrick for Modric or he simply tells everyone that Modric isn't for sale at any price.

Levy should let Modric go only for 50m pounds plus Carrick. Otherwise we can hang on to him, he's still young and it's world cup year, he wont want to jeopardize his chances sulking. Freaking Fergie thinks he can unsettle anyone he likes, he can come eat my sH*t.

We won't sell Modders. Not this year anyway.

However, what about a cheeky £15m bid for Carrick anyway?

we have the greatest playmaker in the league.that we should get carrick and money(no matter how much)would be a bum deal.there is no english player today who can produce what modric does.carrick is not in his league, and i think will never be. no disrespect to carrick, but you must compare like for like.maybe its fergies mind games again.its funny it only surfaces just before the deadline.he must be worried we look the business.

euh no f*ing way fergie , why don't you go and buy another 17 yr old brazilian for 10 mill pounds and then some but please do leave us alone.

God i hate what football has become sometimes , and you guys do not realise that it is much worse for the small countries , we rarely have a talented player in our league but everytime one comes around a french , dutch or german team comes around and takes him for a ridicilously small amount of money

At least English teams pay correct prices ... if you support a small team in a small country than the circle of failure is even more prominent ...

For those that want a summary of the below:

Journo = lazy + see you next tuesday (it is school hols after all) + did I mention lazy + dealine to produce

Of course the above shows one thing to me. A quick trawl through the blogs before lunch and a quick article about this one 'having legs' will surface. Why? because it is clear that we all care about this and to consider it a viabilty is preposterous to say the least.

This means that a) we must want to know the latest denial and will scour newsnow for reputable ( and otherwise) sources and b) there is enough of us that could get many web hits on any article with 'modric', 'carrick' and 'transfer' in the title.

We hate it, with a passion, but knowledge is power my friends and the media are selling out to the advertising whores based on scraps and half truths in a fight for self preservation.

Cynical? Moi? never.

Of course we are unfortuantely the ones to get drawn into this little circle of lies by the miscreants who allegedly have 'jobs' as 'journolists'. Mostly because the spurs online community seems the most widespread and accessible in the english speaking community as far as I can tell.

United are disparate and globally branded across dialects (including northern apprently), 'pool can't muster enough supporters with legitimate PC's (cheap shot I know but hey), goon's are mostly like their players, teens and those that enjoy watching teens play (so busy for the next week I suspect and in the internet cafe at broadmoor)), and finally the Chavs, who are waiting for the new Official Chelsea FC keyboard to come out (has hade half the consonants removed) so they can communicate to one another, leaving the rest of us at a loss.

Which leaves Us, Man City (again suffer from a local 'online demographic' as 'pool), Villains (moderate online following but low expectations currently so the need for info is not great), Everton (still using smoke signals between fans using bunt out mkII capri's).

And if you want evidence of my casually insulting stereotyping. Try Vital and see how many the top 10 posts have.

Cyncial and Logical? Yep, and then some.

Can't see us considering any deal which includes Modric at this point. He truly is an asset to our squad. If any insane offer does manage to rear its ugly head, then we might see the board looking into it. I doubt any team has that kind of money though; our valuation would be extremely high.

Sure we'll sell Modric to Man U. All we require in return is Rooney and £10m. Fair swap, wouldn't you say? Perhaps Rio Ferdinand and Rooney, and forget about the £10m? ;)

As has been said, it's frustrating to see this kind of gambit being used time and again - Modric seems a more level-headed fellow than were Carrick and Berbatov, so fingers crossed he's more likely to ignore any overtures being made unless they're through the correct channels, ie via the club.

Aug 25, 2009 at 10:37 AM | Unregistered CommenterStuart

We all know that if Modric, as with Carrick and Berbatov has a great season a huge bid will arrive on the table from probably Man U or Man Citeh designed as usual to strenghen them and weaken us and if it's big enough an offer he will leave. However this story of about 10 mill plus Carrick is nonsense, we don't need Carrick and Levy will want a bigger return on the 16 odd mill it cost to get Modric. A bid of around 30 million more likely next summer... What i really want to see is Modric have a good stint with us before moving on, like Ronaldo did at Utd. Then we might have a chance of actually doing something as a club and as he's only 23 to move him on at say 25-26 for a massive fee to Milan, Madrid or someone outside England.

Aug 25, 2009 at 10:54 AM | Unregistered CommenterLillywhite London

Carrick for Modric never in a blue moon!!!

Carrick in my opinion was a great player when he was at spurs and the first year at Man Utd he has fizzled out of the England setup. Also he is nowhere near as creative as Modric, nowhere near as pacey and does not move around the pitch. Carrick is only worth 12M and he needs and 50M ontop. Modric unfortunately will recieve alot of unwanted attention from the top clubs in europe especially now he is leadng our charge in good form and every pundit is singing his praises.
So hopefully harry will use this to get more out of modric in his performance.
The sad i always say about spurs is that we love to make a profit and everyone knows for the right tempting price levy would look at it.

Luka says no:

Luka Modric has moved to distance himself from speculation suggesting he is a target for Manchester United.

Reports had suggested that Red Devils chief Sir Alex Ferguson was weighing up the merits of a move for Tottenham's diminutive playmaker.

However, the Croatia international claims he has no knowledge of any such interest and insists he is happy to remain at White Hart Lane for the foreseeable future.

"I don't know anything about the Manchester United link," Modric told Sportske Novosti.

"I read about it in the newspapers, and one paper even published quotes from me saying I was happy to be on Sir Alex Ferguson's radar.

"But the truth is that I didn't say anything to anybody about this. They were not my words.

"I feel great at Tottenham and I have given no thought to moving to a different club. My contract runs until 2013 and I am just thinking about staying.

"I wouldn't be surprised if Tottenham offer me a new contract as that is something which happens in England. But, even if that doesn't happy, my feelings will not change.

"I am happy at White Hart Lane and I will continue to give my all for Tottenham, as I always have."

Modric has also expressed his delight at Spurs' impressive start to the season, with the 23-year-old of the opinion that Harry Redknapp's side are capable of claiming a top-six finish this term.

"Everything is perfect, I really can't complain," he added.

"I think the main thing is that the team has stayed together over the summer. Now we are a year stronger and also coach Redknapp has made us into a real team.

"The big four are still way ahead of the others, and Manchester City are now a real threat as well.

"But we also have big ambitions. We don't want to talk about fighting for the top four, but our aim is to be in the top six at the end of the season. I think we are good enough to do that."

Even if Rednose has initiated a move for Modric (which I doubt), I can't see Modric being interested. From what clues we have of his character (interviews, for example), Modric seems a man with more intelligence than your average footballer.

He's frank about his upbringing in the war and how it shaped his life. He extols the family (no doubt because he came close to losing it) and recognises the value of money in supporting it. During the years of conflict and the direst of circumstances, he worked hard at his football, confident that better times would come. He understands that opportunity can be seized by those prepared for it.

In short, he seems to have depth. He also seems modest and eager to learn. So, if hard work and diligence have been his approach since he was a boy, why now would he jump on board the gravy-train that is Manure? Would he not rather choose the path that tests him, and enables him to grow as a player and a person? In Redknapp he has a guide determined to get the best out of him, and who has even consulted his national coach for advice.

In the future, I can envisage Modric moving to another club, but not in this country, and not before he has given everything he can for Spurs. I can't see him deserting us, because he seems principled and loyal. Perhaps I'm wrong to have such high expectations of Modric. Everyone likes to think he's a good judge of character, and everyone miscalculates sometimes. But he seems exceptional, and perhaps prefers not to run with the herd.

There are other issues to consider, such as the financial health of Manure. How is it? I'm waiting impatiently for the American-backed clubs to implode. This year? Next year? Maybe I'll be waiting a long time, but I always feel it's not too far away. Also, will Manure prove the same footballing power this season? A trophyless season might advance Rednose's retirement and make the club transitional. Furthermore, the experience of moving from one club to another can't always be easy for a player. Some find adjusting more difficult than others, and wouldn't be casual about submitting themselves to the change of environment and life-style, despite financial incentives. It's painful to leave colleagues with whom you have good working relations and takes time to adapt to the culture of a new club.

My point is that, if Modric is going anywhere, I expect it to be to Wembley in a Spurs shirt.

Re Berbatov

I heard from a chap that is reasonably friendly with our board that Emil Danchev has started to make "concilliatory" discussions with Daniel Levy. Rumours are floating about that Berbatov feels he is undervalued up north and may have made a mistake, whilst noises at Old Trafford are Fergie feels that Berbatov may be redundent should they bring in Sergio Aguerro. Obviousely a lot of damage needs to be patched up but Danchev may be paving the way... don't be surprised to see an offer of over £20m tabled.

Retards, a champions league winner, a champions league runner up, three times premier league winner and so on and so on PLUS 10 million for Modric, unheard of before moving to Spurs not so long ago.
Sounds fair to me, why not swap Defoe for Rooney, I know how a bout Crouch for Berbatov hes been there before, Dawson for Ferdinand, hang on Vidic plus the 80 million for Ronaldo for Woodgate.
Get this if the Spurs side read Van der Sar, G.Neville, Ferdinand, Vidic, Evra, Carrick, Fletcher, Valencia Nani, Berbatov and Rooney AND the United side read Gomez the toilet duck, Corluka, Woodgate, King, Esso o kooto, Modric, Hudlestone, Pavlovachenkohoney, Keane, Defoe Lennon. Guess whod win the league. My comments are met with pretty lame come backs, from the surrey shires, anything wrong with that. Upset that your essex homes dont quite fetch the price unless Harry Enfield or David Beckham once owned it. Shame one reader decided to dismiss the facilities that are needed to run a modern club. Sir Alex has transformed the running of the club from a footballing side show to a decent business as the Gunners have started to do. I have pride in the fact that when Sir Alex leaves United he will be leaving a far better set up than he got when he started the job. What will you get when Harry leaves, when he gets the two year itch. Youll have a team no better than the Jol years, no better than the spanish geezers (cant remember his name) team, dare i say it not much better than the Venable era. Overpriced players bought in with a short term goal to make the sitting manager look good and that he can do a good job, make the fans love him. I can imagine it now, hands in pockets wlaking to whyt art laine whistling Im a londoner, with toes pointing artward reminisent of a charlie chaplin. This time however without the bowler hat, suit (allbeit a scope suit) and a cane BUT with blue jeens, NY baseball cap, goochi top and a back pack consisting of a tub of jeelied eels and a six pack of larga (prob special brew).
No one here though thought I was taking the mickey when coming up with Spurs like fanciful transfer ideas.
Muppets.
Good luck to Spurs I dont have any reason to hate you, but come on people Carrick plus 10million for a dwarf with skill. Is that why you bought crouch so youd have someone close to 6 foot. Corners with Defoe, Lennon, Keane, Modric, Woodgate, Esso o kooto. Sure they score with their heads but the cross has to be pin point, if its not there isnt a challenge for a 50 50 ball in the air, that has to be worth 5 points a season.
A footballer is someone who has stamina, ability, physical prowess, presence, the right mental attitude on and off the pitch, NOT just skillfull, presently on form and Ginola hair.

Oh sorry I know a few cockneys will be saying he never mentioned the economy.
For all you down there in the city, shame im talking to the half wits that dont know where the footsie is, other than ceefax and the end of their leggie.
The economy at United is very good, we make a huge profit yearly and have a restructured loan that is easily being paid off. You could say we have a mortgage, a slightly rupugnant idea for some northern folk as they are bought up, rightly or wrongly, that you dont spend what you havent got. Not like some southern mincer who borrows money to put yet another spoiler on his mazda.
So dont get worked up about the hype of being several hundreds of million in debt, believe me United can afford it, and do, and you cant.

Aug 26, 2009 at 9:11 AM | Unregistered CommenterZeus

Zeus, in all your arguement you failed to notice one thing. Modric is in fact exceptionally good, and on his day will orchestrate and create opportunities out of nothing that provide the creative spark that has left your lot, since the departure of the diving pizza faced egotistical arse.

Modric is not just better than Carrick, in some areas, he has the capacity to be better further still. And we should know as fans having seen both play, as to which is the more valuable player to us currently. We have a holding player in Palacious, and Carra's understudy (Huddlestone) is starting to show signs of becoming one thing Carra never quite managed to do, be a long term future for England in 3/4 years when lumpolard retires and Gerrard is banged up for fighting his own shadow.

I suggest you watch a few games (and not just highlights and the two games a season) before spouting bollocks. It's what we expect from a fan with little or no interest in the bigger game. Modric is class, fact. Carra won medals and trophy's mainly from the bench as understudy to scholes, hargreaves (when not injured) and a few others. And good luck to him, be he was hardly ever the match winner was he now since he joined your lot?

Huge profit? Did you not lose £50M last financial year?

Also, I don't quite get your point. Ok, so you don't rate Carrick, but why go to the trouble of trying to justify what Ferguson has done and then baiting us that we are not in the same league? You do know that 98% of all clubs are not in the same league? See down here in the depths it's a little more tricky to build in the same manner you lot have been able to achieve. Sadly sacrifices have to be continually made try and keep up which ironically ends with misery because there is never any inconsistency.

Having said that, off the pitch, we are the 14th richest club in the world. We are healthy and practically private-owned. We have a massive fan base, a new stadium in development, a brand spanking new training facility on the way. Apart from City's billions which guarantees them a heft amount of anything they want, at least we can crow that all our assets are self-made and contained. We might not be top 4 but we aspire to be (in the long run) and we look bloody good for a club that isn't part of the monopoly.

Aug 26, 2009 at 10:18 AM | Unregistered CommenterWest Stand Bagel

Thanks Tricky for your response, it was stupid to say the least. Carrick plays a holding role, has good vision and threads balls through from deep as well as changing the pace of the game by throwing the ball out to wide areas. To compare him to Modric is stupid and unfair if your only statistic in football is goals or assists. I did not compare the two players OR say Modric wasnt a good footballer, I said it was rediculous that a seasoned pro, home international, league winner and champions league winner plus a large sum of cash was an over estimation of the value of the young man you feel so highly about. If Fergusson wasnt prepared to offer 25 million for Tevez then I find it hard to believe hes going to offer the same for Modric or as has been suggested argubly more.
You are right that Huddlestone could be a future replacement for Lampard and Gerrard, but its hardly a measure of the ability of Carrick that he cant place as often as he would like for England when Lampard and Gerrard are playing NOR is it a fair estimation of the abilities of Huddlestone that he can get games once Lampard and Gerrard have retired. Your arguments are wildly unthought out and naive.
As a fan of good football I have indeed watched some Tottenham games and have watched Modric unlike yourself who havent got the grasp of how Carrick entered the team, replacing the likes of Hargreaves and Scholes? The players are all different, each one of them give you something different in a match and its up to the manager to look ahead to the fixtures and rotate the squad accordingly to who the opponent will be. Carrick is not replacing anyone but a measured member of the squad (sorry about the measured member thing but i am actually trying to work out how much of a cock you really are). It seems you miss the days of the players shirts being numbered 1 to 11 and a right back substitutes for a right back, a central midfielder substitutes for a central midfielder. Im more atuned to multi role players, psyching the enemy, causing the opposition trouble and fitness problems and winning a battle of who needs to substitute in a match first and how to counteract changes made.
Sorry if you dont understand what is written above, your dreary grey existence watching the Newcastle United of the south isnt exactly brain food and you are to be forgiven your ignorance.
Come to terms now, Tottenham will not break the top 6, sorry, Fergusson said he liked the player, he likes sam allardyc i dont think hes going to take over or become an assistant, hes probably said it to make your players think more of themselves before our up and coming fixture. He does that and Tottenham do the losing thing.

Thats what the insane bullied by madrid scotsman will hope .Me i hope it goes like this bostock comes in for mods who is faking a goin injury hudds and bostock lennon palacios form one of the best midfields in the prem hudds and bostock start scoring bostocks free kick sails over foster head and wins the game leaving us six points ahead of utd at the top and three ahead of the rest and we do the treble league fa and league cup moderic goes utd in january for 25 mill and wins fick all fergie retires and ends up in a mental ward blaming spurs now that sounds better.COYS

A manc telling us how carra plays, oh the rich and supreme irony!

Also the chap clearly missed the point of value and worth to the team and focussed on position (and one we have covered as he also missed).

Still it was early, and he's probably busy trying for another job in the financial district about now. Good luck with your interview fella. And just remember what wesley said in Passenger 57!

DAVSPURS are you high mate. Drugs grow up, any one who hasnt tried is lying or so fekkin boring they aint worth chatting to. There i said it what a bad boy i am. What the fek has drugs got to do with the modric carrick thing anyway. As for penalties, every team gets dodgy decision and every team gets ripped off, but it helps if your in the other penalty area than your own as Spurs usually are. so no need getting bitter mate.

As were changing the subject mate, how many spurs captains have the clap, got diabetes, talk like a poof. The list is endless mate.

It is only a suggestion but can we arrange for Zeus and tricky to exchange phone numbers so we do not have to read all that nonsense,,,"frustrated hermaphrodite",, he he he, hard to see how a herma could get bored or frustrated, think of the possibilities...
Spookster, it could actually say" crack" and "buxom mature whores" in those boxes, who knows? because we aint gonna read them are we?

swtl, pleased you saw the irony. Think it got lost on 'our man from the north'. And I think I'll pass on the number exchange, I'd rather have a conversation with Russell Brand regarding the correlation to his openly being a spammer and the subsequent confusiuon amongst the spam masses, that has led to an increase in misguided attempts to exert 'alpha male masculinity'.

ps. we still won't win the league, but i'm pleased you're still happy!

pps. My problem with diagram is that I have a natural aversion to red, so can't get past the bit in the middle.

Being a clopper chomper and window cleaner from Widness, I can categorically say that i have seen some pervs in my time, a bloke getting gobbed of by a rainbow trout. An old lady fumble through her bag of knitting and a young lad masterbating to the magic roundabout but you two sicken me. Thats it tuna sandwich....... hang on just gunna cream on my chamoix. OINK OINK OINK.
