I blame Richard Keys

The Premiership Years on Sky Sports. Got this on at the moment, it's 1992, and its the year Sky started their coverage with cheerleaders, balloons, Richard Keys pre-shaved, Monday night football and five hour coverage. These were the days when £3M was considered a massive transfer fee, Clough, terraces, Norwich topping the table, Jimmy Tarbuck, hardly any foreign imports, Spurs constantly mediocre, QPR playing attractive football, ITK info only available via word-of-mouth, Leeds defending champions…you get the picture. Innocent days about to be mugged and left battered and bloody in a dark alley way.

We now live in a world of the Top 4 monopoly, over-inflated transfer fees, ridiculous wages, player-power, seating, family stands, microscopic coverage, the death of muddy pitches, overly expensive season tickets, corporate entertainment, fewer 3pm Saturday kick-offs, play-acting, lack of atmosphere at newly built stadiums, refs with massive egos, far too many average imports, club badges ruined by brand consultancy, empty seats, Vicks covered shirts, The FA Cup losing it's magic, yellow streaks on what should be an all-white shirt, celeb glory hunting fans, billionaire takeovers, Internet kneejerkers, money-spinning pre-season competitions…and Spurs are still mediocre. The irony that I have Sky is also not lost on me.

How I failed to see it all ending in tears, I'll never know.

We'll be saying the same about 2009 no doubt, sometime in 2020.

belgian spur: what's ur blog called? want to check it out

Jul 29, 2009 at 11:55 AM | Unregistered Commenterelwehbi

@elwehbi
i ve just started it , it s about my home team so its in dutch ... reading this blog motivated me to do something similar for my home team - because it is also similar to Spurs (on a far smaller scale off course) as to being a team that never really gets to the top . .. big hopes , dreams and fans but almost no results

Spurs do have the money and the history ... things we don't have :-) we are an upcoming team but have been it for over far 2 many seasons now

It s called buffalokreten , in english it would be something like to cries (yells) of the buffalos (that s our nickname )

www.bloggen.be/buffalokreten
sorry for spamming your blog , spooky won't happen again :-)

There's always plenty of streaming to be had. PIck up one who has a sky player link or one of the yank channels.

And yes, the money men sent premiership football on a path it seems it can never return from. The only thing it can ever do is get to a point whereby it implodes! Prob won't happen in my lifetime though!

Oh and speakign of streaming, just watched the game, Very comfortable, should have been more goals, but a solid work out. ANd whoever said O'hara won't make the grade needs to watch this. Decent squad player who can fit into a number of positions. Modric pulling the strings once again, but Keane and Defoe just can't play together, but only because it brings out the selfishness in both of them!

West Ham are such a small team lol. I like Zola but they will be lucky to make mid table this season.

I for one hope they go down again so we don't have to listen to them spouting on about our so called rivalry for another year.

Rivals? Don't make me laugh.

Modric looked good again today. Hope he's still a Spurs player on 1st Sept!

this is why I won't pay the filth that is Sky any money ever.
Didn't want the split from the old football league and everything that has happened to football since has justified my fears.
Am not so far off just giving the whole thing up, it disgusts me more than delights these days.

hull city in the final of the asia cup as they came through 5-4 on penalties after a 1-1 draw.
Says the players looked dead on there feet by the end of the game.

So with Lennon and naughton running at them on friday the cup should be tottenhams for the taking.

I see Boa Morte is potentially out for 6 months after the game too, and he gave away the free kick to BAE in the challenge.

I watched both games whilst, err, "working" from home on stream. Hull looked more jaded and couldn't keep the pace up, also lacked ideas once giovanni went off, against a very ordinary looking opposition.

Whereas I was more than happy with the sheer amount of posession we had, and that we looked the more dominant team throughout the game against our prem rivals.

What showed was that we had played two games against tough competitiors (in Barca and Celtic) whereas this was Spammers first run out against someone even close to a prem team, we looked tighter and as mentioned O'hara was a worthy man of the match. Naughton was decent in the first half but faded in the second, but that was OK as Lennon came on and ran at a very tired Spam back line!

Stream had to change as the tv companies keep closing channels down as it goes on. Bt still when the alternative is feeding the 'evil murdoch empire', I know what I'd rather chose. 'Richard ba*d Keys' indeed.

only saw the highlights today. shame romans curling effort didnt hit the back of the net. he needs it for some confidence. looked like (from the highlights) we had the majority of the chances with some low crosses just ahead of the strikers.

anyone have an answer as to why our sponsor wasnt on the team? chinese government ban on gambling or something? (speculation of course)
