Just say no to the new 'yellow' Spurs shirt

Ok, so basically, it’s turning into a little bit like Jermaine Jenas. You either love it or hate it. The Marmite factor has once more hit us straight in the face, and in a few days time it will spread outwards from N17 costing you around £40 or so for the privilege of bad taste.

Mock-up of leaked Spurs shirt - Courtesy of Evolution on SC

I’m obviously talking about our new home kit, the one with the yellow streaks. I’m not buying all this ‘yellow is part of our heritage’ crap. Ok, it is, but should not be part of a home shirt which traditionally is all white. It's bad enough reading all the 'Never Red' statements from the club only to have to put up with the red of Mansion bang in the middle of the shirt. And now someone with no sense of understanding has deemed it appropriate to add in the yellow bits. Ironically, people will buy the shirt regardless of what it looks like. It’s the loyalty thing messing with your mind. You weak weak people.

Just say no.

There’s a petition here. Sign it. Let the revolution begin.

For anyone who thinks this is a pointless waste of time (which I guess it will be considering the shirt has probably already gone to ‘print’) then browse away now. The rest of you can also protest simply by not purchasing the shirt. Although, to be honest, I haven't bought a home shirt for around 4 years now. I guess dressing myself up as a footballer in a replica shirt is something I've always found to be a tad silly. As for anyone with kids, have a word. Get 'em a classic ageless replica shirt instead.

It’s possible (but unlikely) that it will grow on me and I will look back on this in embarrassment. I can live with being wrong. I'm gonna hazard a guess it will never grow on me.

All things in perspective, things could have been a lot worse.

A lot lot worse.

Newcastle United, thanks again for cheering me up.

i would add some green to it to complete the mess... i even like the newcastle away kit more than this.

come on guys its not that bad

Jun 23, 2009 at 7:50 AM | Unregistered CommenterJohnny

i like it, why do most supporters worry about the kit, you are all going to buy it so just shut up wear the shirt with pride and get behind the team like we always do.

Jun 23, 2009 at 7:51 AM | Unregistered Commentermemzy

Don't buy the shirt if you like, but then don't complain when Spurs fail to buy anyone good next summer!

Jun 23, 2009 at 8:01 AM | Unregistered CommenterFrazzle

Yawn... If you don't like it don't buy it.
If you don't buy it, don't then moan about transfer funds, ticket prices or the lack of a new stadium... Selling shirts is a key way to get cash to fund the clubs many wants and needs.
Inciting others to not buy it is just daft and hardly a show of support for your club; the game has changed, it only works at top level with high profile sponsors, high profile kit manufacturers etc, I am not a fan of the Mansion logo being red and that being on my shirt (or for that matter that it advertises gambling), but once again it only works with high profile ...
This blog is usually very funny and filled with interesting tit bits, but this entry really sucks and anyway, the kit isn't the worst we have ever had:
Last seasons home kit was not only a bit dull, but the fit and material were both shocking
1991-1994 3rd strip (yes we had that for 3 years) was appalling
I am sure worse will come in the future... its the fickle world of fashion

If the club were so bothered about making money from shirt sales they should come up with a shirt worth buying...yellow streaks don't look good anywhere, much less on a lilywhite top.

Jun 23, 2009 at 8:15 AM | Unregistered CommenterJohnnyB

Sorry everyone, but it's obviously a fake. Someone's just taken it into Photoshop and added in some yellow bits. Easy to do... want me to do one with red hoops? Yeah? Ok, done...

Don't believe everything you see on the net.

What is alll the fuss about purchasing a new Kit !!??
Just take last year's kit and a Yellow Highlight Pen......Sorted.

Jun 23, 2009 at 8:17 AM | Unregistered CommenterPezza from Izza

I don't know what all the fuss is about, I'm not going to stop supporting the club even if the kit was pink.... - it's not about the shirt it's about the badge - COYS

Jun 23, 2009 at 8:22 AM | Unregistered CommenterMark

Christ some of you lot really need to lighten the fuck up.

Jun 23, 2009 at 9:00 AM | Unregistered Commenterfilthy

Ghostboy, that mock up is simply a mock up of the leaked shirt which I think there's a photo of on this blog, but if you look hard enough you can find it on most Spurs sites. I dont think there's any doubt that the yellow streaked shirt is for real.

Jun 23, 2009 at 9:03 AM | Unregistered CommenterEcho

I was born and raised in North London, due to disability and I now live a long way away so can not get to games as often as I'd like, so I see buying the new kit and other merchandising as 'supporting' the club I love. I do like the new kit and if the kit was plain white every year there would be no 'new' kits as the only difference would be the sponsorship details. I think it is innovative and very interesting. I have every kit since the late 70s and I am proud of my team.

Those who boycot the new shirt will only hurt the club which I bet would be the same people moaning we don't the the money to buy the players we need to compete next season. I know shirt sales itself don't fund players, but in the world financial crisis and in the words of Tesco, every little helps.

So stop moaning and get behind the team.

Jun 23, 2009 at 9:08 AM | Unregistered CommenterPete

Right, firstly, I hardly ever buy merchandising. Other than a season ticket + away games/cup game tickets I don't own much in the way of Spurs boxer shorts or posters or a matching pillowcase/duvet set. Does that mean I'm less of a fan because I don't contribute to the Spurs Shop? Of course not.

I guess my oh so simplistic and subtle point that was obviously deeply buried under my tongue and cheek was that if Spurs actually gave a shirt worthy of it's price tag you'd find that MORE people would buy it and thus more money would be made by the club.

Let's say 300 people sign that petition, that's around £12,000 lost by the club? I guess that isn't enough to have them concerned. But still, it's still a loss. Could pay half of Chimbondas wages with that.

If the shirt was all white, those 300 wouldn't be signing a petition.

I honestly do not understand the point of the yellow streaks. It's almost like they've said, ooh, its the start of another season soon and we need a new shirt. Let's just add some yellow shit to it and.....KAZAM!! It's brand new.

Sorry, I just don't buy into this. Excuse the pun.

Jun 23, 2009 at 9:11 AM | Registered Commenterspooky

People take Spooky way too seriously. He's just trying to highlight that some fans do not like the shirt. That's all. You lot might as well go across to glory glory co.uk and slag them off because they're the ones who started the petition.

Jun 23, 2009 at 9:12 AM | Unregistered CommenterHazard

Let me get this right, are people actually saying that if Spurs released a shirt which was basically fucking awful to look at they would still buy it because 'it will help the club'?? Get over yourselves ffs. If people don't like something they have a right to say so. The shirt is ok, I wont be buying it but then I never do. But I can understand why others are disappointed. It's a pointless addition that does nothing for the badge.

Jun 23, 2009 at 9:16 AM | Unregistered CommenterWest Stand Bagel

I never bought the Opus. Does that make me a bad person?

Jun 23, 2009 at 9:21 AM | Unregistered CommenterThe Machine

I've heard that this kit is the result of research carried out for us. They were testing the hypothesis that our passing will be much improved because the fluorescent yellow is easy to pick up in the peripheral vision.

Also, yellow is going to be really in this year

Jun 23, 2009 at 9:23 AM | Unregistered CommenterElbo

Nobody bought the Opus.

Jun 23, 2009 at 9:24 AM | Unregistered CommenterJJ 28

I'll buy the shirt because I always do. Which I guess is what the club relies on. People who blindly buy anything with a Spurs badge on it.

Jun 23, 2009 at 9:32 AM | Unregistered CommenterWe won it in black and white

People buy merchandise all the time. Sadly the quality of our home shirt is about the same level as a Tottenham Hotspur wrist watch. But still, they buy buy buy.

Jun 23, 2009 at 9:43 AM | Unregistered CommenterCrooks

To the person who cited a rescission or financial downturn or whatever and that we should be helping the club out by purchasing this shirt. Well, I bloody purchased a season ticket and now have no money left, so I've done my lot. If I now want to complain about the standard of our home shirt then I will. I know winning is more important than the way we look, but fucking hell guys, its meant to be the Spurs home shirt. It's meant to be ALL WHITE.

Jun 23, 2009 at 9:45 AM | Unregistered CommenterShelfside Warrior

Apparently Bruno will be wearing it at his next public appearance.

Jun 23, 2009 at 9:46 AM | Registered Commenterspooky

Lets make the shirt bright enough to distract the opposition. Wins will come easy then!

Jun 23, 2009 at 9:50 AM | Unregistered CommenterNandM

Elbo: are you seriously saying science authorised the yellow?? does that mean its permanent, seeing as we dont want to harm our pass completion??

of course not. its because they ran out of good ideas, and had to release the shit ones. it must be hard work for Puma to come up with designs, seeing as 90% of their range is shite. We cant even find the Puma kits in their stores, they dont give a shit about Spurs which is why they put piss on our chest.

Jun 23, 2009 at 10:00 AM | Unregistered CommenterMax

It looks more like a rugby league shirt than a football one. Horrible!!!

Jun 23, 2009 at 10:16 AM | Unregistered Commenterlilacstranger

Max - nope, i was taking the piss

Jun 23, 2009 at 10:19 AM | Unregistered CommenterElbo

Must admit I kinda like it, much better than last years. Idealy we should have gone back to the all white as 2 years ago.
But mostly I'm just glad they did not come out with those clown socks again.

If there was no yellow streaks, and it was blue instead, this is what it would look like:

Is that not a millions times better?

Jun 23, 2009 at 11:06 AM | Unregistered CommenterOops

Personally I like the shirt design just not sure bout the yellow I would like the shoulder strips in navy.....

Jun 23, 2009 at 12:19 PM | Unregistered CommenterWoodleyYid

GET.....OVER.....IT! I'm buying one, and i live in corfu! to be honest, i would getting bored of the same stuff year after year, and i know, they've just chucked abit of yellow on it, but i love it because its different.........fuck the haters, if you dont like it, dont buy it, dont be a yid........end of story

Jun 23, 2009 at 1:10 PM | Unregistered CommenterDayveTheGreekYid

If the club depends so much on selling shirts, then it should give the supporter clubs the opportunity to have a say in the design through some kind of democratic vote. That way everyone’s happy.

Jun 23, 2009 at 1:44 PM | Unregistered CommenterRoyspur

Your all taking this a little too serious, its a football shirt design Wow its got yellow on it so what buy the shirt get behind the team, its not a fasion show you sound like women moaning about clothes you bunch of girls it's football, who gives a toss about the shirt as long as the lads do the buisness on the pitch that's what its about

Jun 23, 2009 at 2:13 PM | Unregistered CommenterSid da yid

I don't mind it, but found a picture of the everton shirt, now thats fugly, and we have it really good compared to that barcode away shirt, at home the look like humbugs, away strawberry's and peach, lovely.

Jun 23, 2009 at 2:51 PM | Unregistered Commenterullspur

It's so disappointing to read so many comments stating that if you dont like it then dont buy it and if we dont have money next year then you're to blame.

How short sighted is that!?!?!? Rather sad in fact.

This is a TWO way street. WE are the individuals that keep the clubbing running therefore I dont think it's too much to ask for a little something in return - maybe the Supporters Trust being involved in choice of the final design or something along those lines.

I suppose one good thing has come to light - no matter how awful the new kit is, there will always be idiots out there willing to buy it and therefore will never have to worry about income from shirt sales.

Jun 23, 2009 at 2:58 PM | Unregistered CommenterM4tth3w

M4tth3w shut it you mug just buy the shirt and stop bitching like a little girl. honestly whats up with you people

Jun 23, 2009 at 3:50 PM | Unregistered CommenterSid da yid

Boycotting this shirt does not mean no revenue for the club, as those who would have bought it will buy one of the other FIVE shirts on offer. It's only the home monstrosity that is causing a stink.

Jun 23, 2009 at 4:40 PM | Registered Commenterspooky

Don't like it but the leaked (supposedly) blue one looks nice. Loads of people hated the turd brown one but loads liked it. A petition is a bit lame especially if you state you rarely
Buy one. Let's be honest, if we win the premier league wearing it every fucker will buy it and it will go down as a legendry shirt. As long as we don't go back to the skin tight kappa I don't care.

Jun 23, 2009 at 4:59 PM | Unregistered CommenterGinge1

The 'all white' kit is a bit of a fallacy; we have only worn an all white strip for:

1964-1977 European only kit
1967 FA Cup Final
Both of which are recorded as 'away/2nd strips'

We also wore all white as a home strip:
2007-2008

We have of course had White shirts with Blue trimmings on many occasions, but this was always (except 1985-87 home and 1987 FA Cup (again officially considered as an away strip) which were with white shorts and socks) been teamed with Blue shorts.

I am of course not including any sponsors colours in this comment - just actual player kit.

Yellow is of course part of Spurs history in its kits, first appearing in the modern era as an away colour in 1967 and then reappearing approx 15 times in various guises, but also (more of a golden colour) as a home shirt (teamed as stripes with the now infamous brown) between 1896 and 1898.

Anyway, if you like it buy it, if you don't then don't. No need for a petition really.

Just hope the bloody team get on well with it! Be damned if it turns out to be 'Manchester grey shirt syndrome' for us.

I really do not know if i i like it but i bet my bottom dollar

Oh for the days when Adidas made our kits!

Jun 24, 2009 at 12:12 AM | Unregistered CommenterPaul

Well this years shirt "leak" and I say leak very loosly is very similar too last years shirt "leak" so i'm not gonna judge the new shirt until it is officially unveiled by the club rather than some guy sitting infront of his computer with his trousers round his ankles mocking up a kit on photoshop using a Puma template, probably the same person who "leaked" the shirt last year.

saying that if this is really the shirt then I don't think we'll see many of them in WHL - 11/14 I reckon I will buy the Away shirt if these three leaked ones are the new season kit

Jun 24, 2009 at 1:30 AM | Unregistered Commenter5PUR5

I think the shirt will look pretty damn good, especially when we are scoring a lot of goals and beating the snot out of Arsenal! Come on guys! It's not bad at all! Its got flair and stylistic balls.
