Spurs to sign Beckham? That makes sense

Staggering piece of journalism in today’s Sun concerning Harry Redknapp and how we all shouldn’t be too surprised if he manages to resurrect David Beckham’s career form the dead by signing him in the summer. Because if you haven't yet noticed, Becks has slipped into obscurity in recent months.

The assumption made is that Becks needs football after the MLS season ends in October and I guess AC Milan won’t be an option. I say guess because you have to suspend probability to get a grasp of Ian McGarry’s Inside View. All this is based on the logic that LA Galaxy and Milan don't agree a transfer deal and that if Ancelotti leaves for Chelsea the new man at the helm might not want the England veteran. And thus, the Premier League is the only logical loan spell awaiting. That's all quite possible in theory, but none of it is actually referenced or argued.

There’s plenty of hot air about why it would benefit the player to wear Lilywhite and how it won’t harm his England chances and that Harry, a selfless creature, would rejuvenate Beckham who is currently a pale insignificant shadow of his former self playing for an amateur club in a low quality league. Ok, Milan aren’t that bad, and neither is Italian football but obviously playing for Spurs is a far more rewarding prospect according to Ian.

The 'Beckham wanted to be Glenn Hoddle when he was a kid' comment doesn't cut it with me either. This, the same Hoddle that humiliated Becks in England training?

The rest of the article is about the magic man-management of Redknapp and how he’s handled King infinitely better than Ramos ever did – which is something nobody could argue a case against.

Now if you’re still unsure McGarry is writing without substance and reason, other than a PR push for Harry, then the following will surely guarantee it:

“According to those who know him best, Redknapp would be the last to claim success is all about him, his ability or his personality. Speak to the players he coaches, though, and you discover that even if Harry denies being a Special One, he is certainly special. It’s just he doesn’t go shouting from the rooftops. Redknapp’s style is understated and is based on over 45 years’ experience in the game”

Harry would be the last to claim success? According to those who know him best? Who? Jamie Redknapp? I’m not going to dispute ‘arrys man management skills because they have taken us from the mire up to a UEFA Cup push. But to claim he is understated and that he doesn’t like standing in the limelight (which is what’s being suggested) is wonderfully ridiculous. Harry calls up Sky Sports News often with ‘from the horses mouth’ exclusives, ffs. He’s a media-whore, and he loves it. And everyone knows it.

Does Harry write for the Sun? Does Ian know Harry personally? Ian must be In The Know, as apparently he seems privy about a proposal that Levy is ‘seriously considering’ on forking out for the Beckham brand. What else is in this proposal? Does it cover whether Becks will be signed to play on the right replacing the younger, raw talent of Lennon? Or will he play in the middle, pushing Huddlestone further away from the pecking order? And haven’t we already got a beta-version of Becks in the reserves that needs a serious reboot?

I’ll shave off my beard and eat it if we signed David Beckham.

McGarry is Harry's ghostwriter or something iirc, clearly this is a PR piece that just recycles the rumors from January about Beckham as an excuse for good PR. He won't come and I very much hope he doesn't, it'd sell a whole lot of shirts but he will demand time on the pitch and I don't think he's capable of playing well in the PL anymore.

A load of crap! Why would we even want Becks???????

In reference to the quote "Redknapp would be the last to claim success is all about him" written above... of course that's true... I mean he never constantly reminds us about the "2 points from 8 games" now, does he??? :)

SPURS!!!!!!

I agree with you - other than a wealth of experience Becks has nothing to offer that we don't have already, and more importantly, Spurs have nothing to offer Becks that would induce any real commitment from him. Spurs must keep building and Becks will be the wrong side of 35 - after the World Cup he will retire altogether anyway.

I'd rather see Milan get Beckham but Spurs get Mourinho.......!!

"Redknapp would be the last to claim success is all about him" - what, Harry "before I turned up we only had two points from eight games" Redknapp??

You idiots !!!!!

Harry Redknapp is the BEST thing to happen to this club in a long while .... we are playing attractive attacking football and winning games .... !!
When will you lot be happy ..... !! the players that are not playing at the moment simply are not good enough .... and if Harry thinks Becks has something to offer then for f**Ks sake do what we can to sign him .......

FOR ONCE CAN WE PLEASE GET BEHIND THE WINNERS AT TOTTENHAM INSTEAD OF THE PLUCKY LOSERS (i.e freund, zakora, ginger pele etc ..... !!!)

What an utter load of old bollicks. Lets get in a player on the verge of retirement and send one of the biggest prospects England has seen in a while confined to the bench, so Mr golden balls gets some pitch time.

It's 'The Sun'. Enough said.

The only reason we'd sign beckham is to sell shirts and raise funds for the new stadium! Thats it! I was always under the impression that he was to rejoin AC Milan after his spell in America ended seeing as his contract states he can cancel his deal after 2 or 3 years at the Galaxy.

In all seriousness though, no matter how much of a media whore Harry is he's done a fantastic job at Spurs this season. He's had 2/3 of a season and he's taken Spurs from rock bottom and devoid of any drive or ideas to a club thats just beaten a 20-odd year home clean sheet/goals conceded record and pushing for a european spot in the league, not to mention our best record against the top 4 for as long as i can remember.

Lets get it right, if Ramos had stayed in charge we'd be battling Newcastle in a relegation bunfight. We probably would be already relegated.

Harry's done a great job at Spurs, i don't understand the need to keep questioning his abilities.

I'm not complaining about the Redknapp pros from The Sun. Better than anything Spookys friend Matt Norman would spew on any given day.

Yidskin:

I hope you don't think my comment was in any way or form belittling what Harry has done for our beloved Spurs. If anything, I never doubted the man and his potential in bringing the best out of our boys! Hell, I didn't even doubt him when he brought back Chimbo!!!!

This particular move for Becks though (not that he is even truly pondering it) would be an unnecessary acquisition. First of all, we are building a team for the long run; a team that can challenge for the - much sought after - top 4 spots. Bringing in Becks at virtually the end of his career is not going to help us at all! Maybe to sell some extra jerseys...

I think I'll take mine in Large. Hmmmmmmmm...

COYS!!!!!

Dave, that would make sense.

I read the same column this morning and did wonder if it was some sort of satirical piece.

the only use we would have for Becksis to coach Aaron on how to improve his crossing of the ball...

It's just lazy journalism. Nothing to say, fluffed up nonsense.

When Arry was at Pompey he said he'd love to sign Beckham but that was at Pompey who had no right wingers. Now at Spurs he has 2 of the players who have, over the last couple of years, been pushing Beckham out of the England team. There would be absolutly no reason for us to sign Beckham and I don't believe the story for even a nano-second.

Apr 23, 2009 at 10:16 AM | Unregistered CommenterRobbieK

maybe we can sign him for free, sell him to some daft northern twats for £30m and sign him back when they realise hes probably not as good as he was at Spurs.

if club chairman havnt cottened onto our little game by now, we should take full advantge. stupidness is paying Spurs bills
