A or B

A or B. Choose.

A) Stay firm on Luka Modric valuation, not a penny less. Dig heels in and only accept an offer if it matches the valuation. So if it's £35M it's got to be that or else, no deal. Do as we did to Chelsea last season, with assured stubbornness, protecting the principle above all things. Club before players, even if it means sacrificing equilibrium.

B) Take a hit, accept a lower bid, not derisory (say £28M- £30M) and rid the club of a player that doesn't want to wear the shirt and allow the club/squad/fans to move onto better things, which would include a 'replacement' playmaker.

DML Supa Liga

Fantasy Football and me, do not go hand in hand. Full of confidence on day one, by Christmas I'm out of the race like a much maligned Spurs side of the 1990s. I blame other distractions such as Football Manager but the reality is, I lose focus faster than Harry Redknapp in the midst of flirting with England. However, you lot appear to want this back again, so knock yourselves out:

Code to join the DML Supa Liga is: 195141-56816  (Fantasy Premier League 2012/13)

sell for 31million

Aug 10, 2012 at 10:16 AM | Unregistered Commentercharlie

A. It sets an example to the rest of the players and other clubs like Chavski and f***ing man utd that we are NOT a selling club. Man utd held out for 80 mil for ronaldo cos they thought thats what he was worth. I hate to say it, but we must do the same as f***ing man utd

Aug 10, 2012 at 10:19 AM | Unregistered Commenternelson manboona

A -Its about more than money. If we cave in now clubs will be trying it on for years to come and players will know they will eventually get what they want. We could do with setting a deadline though, if no acceptable bid is received by ... then he's not for sale.

Aug 10, 2012 at 10:19 AM | Unregistered CommenterNunsandwich

Every article, morons comment "I'm so sick hearing about ratfact, just GET RID and get in Moutinho NOW!!11" [sic].

Couple of points;

1. Just 'getting rid' is failure. It is weakness. People seem to confuse calling Modric "ratface" then accepting the latest, derisory bid as some sort of strength, a success. It isn't. We are ones who lose, completely.

2. More important, the 'derisory' bid we don't accept in scenario B has not even been offered. The latest Madric offer if in Euros is FAR less than even 28GBP. If in GBP, it is still the derisory figure we DON'T accept in scenario B.

Put it this way; if we sell Modric for 30mGBP and get Moutinho we will probably make a 5-10m loss. We will swap a better, proven player for a player with less experience who may not fit into the league and lose 5-10m for the pleasure.

AND WE HAVEN'T BEEN OFFERED 30M FOR HIM YET

Quite obviously, we have to go with Scenario A.

Aug 10, 2012 at 10:21 AM | Unregistered CommenterDDS

Oh an as an addendum to my comment; if we accept 30mGBP for him and then get Moutinho even for the same price, the following is true;

The world knows they can buy our players and shaft us on price.
The world knows they can sell us players and rip us off.

COYS?

Aug 10, 2012 at 10:24 AM | Unregistered CommenterDDS

A A A A A A all the way.

Don't even consider B, we aren't arsenal!

Aug 10, 2012 at 10:35 AM | Unregistered CommenterDavidC

We went into this window clearly stating that we were planning to keep our best players.
The only way that we should let Modric go is if another team meets OUR valuation of the player and so far no one has.

Expect United to bid £40m the day the window closes and offer Michael Carrick or some Bulgarian bloke on a year's loan!!

Aug 10, 2012 at 10:35 AM | Unregistered CommenterPhilM

£28 - £30? For that I could buy him myself to do odd jobs around the house.

I hope a way can be found for him to go, I think things have gone to far for him to have a good season. I expect a compromise around £35m.

Aug 10, 2012 at 10:46 AM | Unregistered CommenterIain

B Urgently !
For me it is not that other people thinks that we are a selling club, - but rather how we line up for the new season !
Pretty sure Ade is about to sign, - now use the 30 mill/plus to purchase another top striker ( Leandro ), then sign up a keeper Caesar on a free would be great. Do not think we need a direct replacement for Modders, - in a system 433 prefered by AVB we have Sandro, Gylfi, Parker to cover the midfield. Furthermore get rid urgently of the deadwood and use the funds for further additions( another left back perhaps) and we are ready to go ! Patience Guys, - everything gonna be just fine, - although we most probably has to sweat it until the end of the transfer window, before everything falls into place.... Nothing new there, - we as Spurs fans are experts in sweating it out !

I guess there is a bunch of ego at play here. RM will want to show that they got their man. Levy will want to show that it is on his terms. How both parties can show that they got what they wanted? Levy, like last year, will come across as the man who stood firm even with Madrid if he sticks to his principles, but can be left with a very unhappy team especially if we start the season slowly. Madrid will not want to appear as the guys who had to backoff. So going to be very interesting.. All the amounts are just media speculation. Personally I would sell 28 million and take Diarra, I reckon we need a really good holding midfielder

Aug 10, 2012 at 10:54 AM | Unregistered Commenterabe

A. It's about attitude. If we want to be a big club we have to act like one. What would Man Utd do?

Aug 10, 2012 at 10:55 AM | Unregistered CommenterSpanish Spur

B - sell and sell now. Use whatever we can get to find a replacement, and fast! we are a week away from the season!! anything from 28+ will do. There is no point getting an extra few million on August 31 when we havent got enough time to spend it on a proper replacement, or just panick buy someone for 10 million.

Aug 10, 2012 at 11:00 AM | Unregistered Commenterlilywhitemike

A for me, if we buckle now RM will be back next year offering 10 million for Bale

Those who say we don't need to replace Modric clearly haven't seen the pre season games,
the mid field is an absolute shambles without him. Without Modric or like for like replacement
there is no chance of top 4 this season. More like 6-8th.

Aug 10, 2012 at 11:02 AM | Unregistered CommenterHot_Spur

C: Have Modric "dealt with" and get Insurance pay out.

Aug 10, 2012 at 11:02 AM | Unregistered CommenterS

A. B is all very well in principal, but if you get shafted on the fee then who's the real winner?

Aug 10, 2012 at 11:03 AM | Unregistered CommenterAndy

B. Let's move on.

Aug 10, 2012 at 11:11 AM | Unregistered Commenterpeej

@Hotspur
Please note that neither Sandro nor Parker were involved in pre-season, - I sincerely believe that there is no need for a direct replacement for Modders in a 433 line up !

Aug 10, 2012 at 11:14 AM | Unregistered CommenterAllan

@Allan So you think we can sell our best passing midfielder in modric who is the beating heart of our midfield and not even purchase a replacement? You think a midfield within a 4-3-3 can include parker, sandro and siggurdson. sorry to burst your bubble but siggurdson is an AM and doesn't suit a passing central midfield role. None of those players can play as a deep lying playmaker and control the game.
Without replacing modric we will not be able to control matches and will end up a mid-table side come the end of the season.

Aug 10, 2012 at 11:20 AM | Unregistered CommenterE

There is a downside to both A and B if we hang on to our priced Rat who is chasing easy medals we could be telling other potential players if you sign for Spurs you cant leave if a bigger club comes calling players like Leandro. On the A side we sell Modric and he gets easy medals then next on the shopping list will be Bale Walker and any other player we nurture like Townsend Coulibaly Carrol . I favour the C Sell him buy a better replacement who scores and makes goals and looks nice in our shirt and most of all he is happy and we win things and finish 3rd or better. Mr Levey and our fans need to understand this Football is now a play thing for the one product that has caused all the worlds financial problems OIL and we are paying the most through the pumps turnstiles and Tv. What this has done is turn footballers into greedy mercenary's who flog there talent to the highest bidder no matter where it is China Siberia outer Mongolia. The other things that has changed football for the worse is lets say energy drinks being swallowed at every given chance means teams who would tire by being outplayed are still running in the last mins of games. This extra energy means any team can defend a lead without worrying about tiredness and this is why shocks are happening and one reason i tipped Chelsea cheaters to hold out against Barca passers. So when you clammier for new signings remember two things Oil can Gazump your bid and make you sad and extra energy can lose you games and make you mad.

B. In my opinion there are only 2 clubs in the world who are NOT selling clubs, Madrid and Barca. The question fans and more importantly, Levy, should ask themselves is, what's best FOR THE CLUB? For me, we have an amazing platform on which to build, with or without modric, if this is jepordised because we are trying to get an extra 8 million or because Levy is doing it to uphold his reputation is wrong. I've always rated modric from the 1st time I saw him but I find it funny that a lot of fans (who obviously have there tongue up his arsehole) seem to think he is worth 35-40 million, he's not in my opinion, 30 million would be great business. He will never be a scholes or (as much as it pains me to say) fat Frank, not in this league anyway, and before people say "they are different types of players" need to stop giving luka a tossed salad, the stats don't lie

Aug 10, 2012 at 11:20 AM | Unregistered Commenterluke

A.

Huddlestone will be our replacement playmaker, he is the business. The worry is that there is no cover then, so we would still benefit from another signing, although I firmly believe that its highly unlikely we will sign a replacement playmaker with any sort of "big" reputation.

Aug 10, 2012 at 11:44 AM | Unregistered CommenterTeam Paulo

@luke I suppose as Busquets goal and assist stats are crap you don't rate him highly enough either. These players help to control the game from a deep lying midfield position and allow their team to dominate the opposition. You can't rate a midfield simply on goals and assists, that's a very limiting view of them. Secondly if Modric is the difference between us getting champions league (and thus bringing in an extra £50m in revenue) and not then why can he not be valued at that price to us? where is this magical midfielder you wish to replace modric with, he doesn't exist, certainly not one that is available for us to purchase.

Aug 10, 2012 at 11:46 AM | Unregistered CommenterE

I'm definitely encouraged by the number of fans going with A. I thought I was in the minority on this issue, good to see that many of us have the right perspective on this.

Aug 10, 2012 at 11:46 AM | Unregistered CommenterFootball Football Football

@e. I wasn't saying modric wasn't a good player. My point was players like scholes do exactly the same and job as him regarding setting the play from deep but they would also SMASH luka on the goals AND assists. You think chelsea and UTD would of won all those titles without them? Ask yourself, where would we have finished last year if modric popped up with even just 10 goals and 10 assists. I also made the point that I was just speaking about the prem, he might be better in la liga. You also make the risky assumption that,if luka stays, we will see the best of himand we will get CL. I'm not so sure

Aug 10, 2012 at 11:57 AM | Unregistered Commenterluke

This crap has been going on for many years now and to be frank (no I'm not really frank that's my cousin) Im sick to death of the man. Mr Levy is wrong Modric is not worth 40m of anyone's money unless you are Man city.
why are we in this position? well its easy, everything that we have according to Mr Levy is worth top dollar (Jenas = 10m Bentley = 16m) but everyone Else's players are over priced. even Stevie Wonder can see that's not fair and that's what is holding us back. It is time for that man to leave the club.

Top four? hahahahahaha never again as long as we have a cabbage as the chairman he is to tight!!!!!
we have gone backwards what a shame and whose to blame? simples that man Levy.

so let me say it first before we all start shouting "we want Levy out say we want Levy out"

What's your view spooky?

Aug 10, 2012 at 12:08 PM | Unregistered Commenterluke

@E you are going on like Luka helped us get into CL last season, Tom Huddleston is better on the ball than Luka full stop (no he isn't the same style of player as he doesn't have Luka's pace) but his hold up play, strength on the ball and passsing is second to none in our club, and to boot he can dictate play, and score goals and assists, so there is a life after Luka. We will have to work hard as a group of players and stay as a club and a group of supporters, otherwise you may as well be red nomadic scum. We have so much talent in our squad that all top clubs are looking at taking our talent either on loan or for keeps if they can get them, we may not have instant success but success is definately on the path we are on, stay loyal, keep calm support SPURS!

Aug 10, 2012 at 12:19 PM | Unregistered CommenterAlphaT

A. As much as the whole "a bad apple can spoil the bunch" (or something like that; to that effect) can be true, Modric is more stupid than heartless. He doesn't have a brain (off the pitch at least) and does whatever his agent tells him. Last year we all expected him to force the move through and he didn't. Once the window was closed, he got his head sorted out and started playing again. Keeping him is hardly a horrible option. His vision and movement were greatly missed both against Watford and against Valenica last night.

If we bend over to RM, or to Chelski, or even United, we are opening ourselves to being fucked every time a top drawer player of ours starts to think about "needing" CL every year. We need to stand strong and if an offer comes in around 35M (not €uros) then sign up Moutinho and announce the sale of Luka to RM. I get the feeling we might have Joao tied up already and Levy is just waiting for Madrid to pull their finger out. We can't/shouldn't announce any deal for Modric before we have our replacement signed and sealed ready to present to press the day after.

Aug 10, 2012 at 12:28 PM | Unregistered Commenterspurspanyol

a No question about it.Retains credibility for Levy and Tottenham.
Someone somewhere has to stand firm against agents ,player power and obscene paydays and I m proud its Tottenham.
Modric is hugely talented and key to our continuing progression,we dont have a replacement nor is one currently available to us.
Please God its not a Berbatov style transfer though with no time to repair the damage.
Selling Carrick put us back two years and I fear the same thing could happen if he,Modric goes.

Aug 10, 2012 at 12:39 PM | Unregistered Commenterbournemouth spur

This muggy opinion that we need to prove we're not a selling club is pathetic. Until we start paying what other clubs pay, the best players will leave. 30 million euro is too little, Madrid know that, but a deal must be thrashed out asap so we can get on with buying and put the stench of Modric behind us.

After this Modric fiasco, no-one worth their sort will ever sign a contract at Spurs again without inserting a buy-out clause. Levy has made sure of that. So the "let's show the world how big and bad we are" attitude is now null and void.

'A' is the stuff of foolish ideological misplaced bravado, the choice of a brain dead chimp.

'B' is pragmatically (that's for you spooky) sound, the choice of winners.

Aug 10, 2012 at 2:04 PM | Unregistered CommenterTMWNN

My view? Last season Levy did the right thing. If Redknapp had an ounce of humility we'd have finished 3rd and if Luka still wanted to leave it would have been an easier summer to handle. Instead we've got the clusterfuck of playing hard ball with Madrid. Can't believe I'm saying this but sell him - under the valuation if need be, but not at the point of Madrid taking the piss.

He wants out. We agreed and therefore understand he wants out.

I'll wager that behind closed doors this isn't as hellish as it looks to us. Spurs/Madrid probably closer to agreeing the deal than the quotes in the papers would have us believe.

It's about the club, it's about the equilibrium (my new word to replace pragmatically, just for you TMWNN).

Totally agree spooky. Sell him now and get some players in or were starting the season with just JD upfront

Aug 10, 2012 at 7:31 PM | Unregistered CommenterJmac

Sell him immediately to madrid or PSG but no one in premier league. 30 million is enough.

Aug 10, 2012 at 10:08 PM | Unregistered Commentermikey s

I say we keep the pikey! Levy and VB promise him a free pass to Madrid next summer, if the price is right, on the understanding that he gets us into the CL next year. This way we (A) have our rat-faced playmaker; and (B) may turn him around if he likes what VB has on offer this year. Then, Bob's yer uncle, a little plastic surgery and we've got a future attraction for madame Tussauds!!

(Yes...I said WITH a little plastic surgery, right now he's still too hideous for young children and those with weak hearts.)

Conversely, anyone know where his agent lives? We could arrange an...accident...or steal his Star Wars action figures...
