Harry. Spurs. Knee-jerk here.

The catalyst  for this seasons epic blip is not the moment Fabio lost/quit his job as England manager. It's the moment our manager refused to draw a line under it. Redknapp should have come straight out and stated "I'm not interested in anything other than Spurs. Don't ask me about it, please respect Tottenham and the job I'm being paid to do". Even if he is interested in it, that's what the summer is for. No such luck. Did anyone expect it to pan out any differently?

Instead he whored himself like he always does. Focus is lost. Respect is lost. Court case probably rattled him a fair bit too. It's been discussed before, we all know this. It masks other issues at play relating to lack of decisiveness with selections. Actually no it doesn't, we can see them as well. It's all rather blatant and obvious. There's also the fragile mindset of our players that saw them so easily effected by it. Collectively, motivation is easy if everyone is on form, its more tricky if only a select amount of players give a s**t all season long. Lack of rotation, strange line-ups and a hefty sack of inconsistent soundbites...whatever happened to back to basics?

I don't know, perhaps it's too soon after the game to discuss all this. Usually when things are going well we all lap it up (fans and manager alike) and when things are not going well we react accordingly and criticise. Which is well within our rights to do so (as long as we attempt to retain some level of balance). Most of us don't, which more or less matches up to the way Harry handles it. Ironic that we are as fickle and reactionary to what is going on at the time and what best suits us - much like our much maligned manager. But then that's what we are meant to do. We want the best for our club, within the constraints of what we possess. Although every person will have a varying perception to the next person.

We're underachieving. That's my perception. In the past when we claimed we were underachieving it was misguided because the reality was we did not have the team to truly compete. We do now (be it one for the short term not the long term) and we're half way to ballsing it up. We can't have one of the best sides pound for pound in the country one minute and then claim we're over-rated the next. We're good enough. We are desperately letting ourselves down. That's more than perception (IMO), it's just another harsh reality.

There's nothing wrong in recognising the lack of leadership. The formation, selection and tactics against Arsenal, Man Utd, Everton and Norwich (Chelsea in the cup included) during this blip are pretty damning. Distinct lack of mental and positional preparation.

We've also muddled through all three cup competitions (Carling cup and Europe hardly bothered at all) with the league always the priority and yet somehow we've managed to surrender momentum in the only competition we've taken seriously.

The players are equally accountable. Far too many have switched off. Still it's better to be competing (and throwing it away) than it is to be sat dead in mid-table, right? Right? Someone? Anyone?

in last few weeks many refree decisions have gone against small clubs , manu vs qpr , chelsea vs wigan , man u vs aston villa and now chelsea vs spurs ..

Apr 16, 2012 at 2:27 PM | Unregistered Commenterbluebird

In my opinion, Scott Parker and (perhaps) Gareth Bale are the only two players who (during the last few turgid weeks) are at least SHOWING that they care, and you just know that if Michael Dawson was available, then he would be SHOWING it too. Unfortunately, we are not inundated with many natural leaders, and if Parker misses any of our remaining fixtures, then I cannot see us winning any of those respective games. Why are our lot, for the most part, so mentally weak? I WANT TO KNOW! PLEASE TELL ME!!

Apr 16, 2012 at 2:46 PM | Unregistered CommenterDani Boy

I think we did pretty well for the first hour or so but the fatigue on scott parker was so clearly visible . The scoreline is as shit as it was because chelsea bullied a tired spurs squad.

Apr 16, 2012 at 2:46 PM | Unregistered CommenterRaj sharma

were spurs
will we ever be allowed to achieve?
this kind of luck only happens to us
and yes ....harry should sh*t or get off the pot
hes having his cake and eating it
the players lost faith in him a while back
still..... on current form he might not get asked to manage england
then what??

How can Raj say Chelsea bullied a tired spurs team?
They are on average older than us and have played more games this season.
How can we be tired. We got knocked out of the carling cup in the first round and played the reserves in Europe.
These are professionals that only play 55hours of football per year! Think about that. It`s just a bit more than the average person works in a year!!!!

Problem with football in England is the lack of brain cells caused by the alienation of the middle classes from an early age. Le Saux was called a poof because he read the odd book. It's not like that in Spain and Italy where young footballers are encouraged to continue with their studies while they train.

By the way I am not middle class, I am a toff.

Is anyone worried the likes of Luka and Bale will jump ship as soon as the season is over if we don't make top 4?

Apr 16, 2012 at 3:09 PM | Unregistered Commenterneal

The lack of rotation over the season is taking it's toll - Harry's run the first team into the ground and shattered the confidence of all the fringe players. He's messed around with the formation so players don't know where the next pass is going - all very reactive.

It's funny because there's all this stuff about Man U having the experience of winning etc - yet they have a load of new players like Jones, De Gea, Smalling, Wellbeck, Young, Cleverley in their first season - where is the experience, IN FERGIE. Harry's failed to arrest the decline and the players are looking for leadership - he's never done it before which is why we are now in such a bad state. Fergie coined the phrase 'squeaky bum time' - Harry's shat his pants but can't even work out what the smell is!!

Luka has left the building! As soon as arry for England was called, ms modric had packed his bag & fluttered her eyes to all & sundrie.drop him till the end of the season & notice the difference

Apr 16, 2012 at 3:18 PM | Unregistered CommenterNicktheyid

@Rory ITV said during commentary yesterday that we were on average older than them.

The players need to be seriously motivated for the last 5 games. Please don't say that they shouldn't need to be, because everybody needs some motivation. To them, this is a job. End of. They are not playing for the shirt, no matter how much we like to think they are. We all do our job better if we are motivated and the more motivated we are, the better we will do it.

I think Redknapp lost his motivation for day to day football during the court case & the subsequent Capello / England situation. The Newcastle result was because the players were playing fror Redknapp, not because he gave a great motivation speech. The City defeat was a killer too. The chance to equalise right at the end when Defoe just couldn't reach the ball totally deflated the players. That moment was the turning point of our season.

Who will motivate them for the QPR game?

It needs strong players to stand up & do that. Not in the media, but at training, in the dressing room, in the gym, on the treatment table, at every opportunity. Tottenham Hotspur FC, we need you to stand up, stand together, stand firm, steadfast & true. We need you to do your job, to the best of your ability, giving everything in every moment until you have no more to give.

And we need to trust them to deliver, to support them in everything they do, to give them everything & to give them the knowledge that we believe in them.

Audere Est Facere.

I don't know about you guys but a massive part of me thinks since Capello quit and inevitably the press hounded 'Arry for his take on matters, our form went to shit.

Yes we had some tough games bunched together, with Man City (we were unlucky), United, A***nal and all that, but fact of the matter is, the whole team has become unsettled while Harry has been off giving soundbites about how the England job needs to go to someone mature and English. Christ why not go the whole hog Harry and say his surname should be Redknapp...

Kinda ironic given that at the start of the season Harry dropped Modric for the same reason, his head's not in it. The team has had almost no rotation over the season and now they are shagged. Our activity (LOL) in the January window was laughable, that was our opportunity to bring in some quality. Some young, fresh legs and cement that 3rd place we now rightly covet. Now we lost momentum and to be quite honest, I wouldn't be too surprised now if we finish 6th. The squad needs belief and re-energizing and the man who is tasked with this job is more interested in soundbites.

Flame me for being negative if you wish but since the England job became available, our form has been W L L L D D W D L.

Agree with Nicktheyid, Modric has left the building long ago. A really top class attacking midfielder, will engineer things to happen when they need to , and will certainly score more goals than Modric. Apart from the odd great pass he has looked only a shadow of his former self. Heart, unfortunately, no longer resides at White Hart Lane. Time to say to his agent OK start touting him around but we won't accept anything under forty million and we will not sell to a premiership rival. Start earning your money Mr. Agent. I have followed Spurs for fifty three years and I would rather have one Dave Mackay, one Steve Perryman, one Graham Roberts, one Gary Mabbutt, with apologies to those I've missed, than all fancy dan mercenaries put together. Love this club if you want to play for it, because Tottenham Hotspur is still one of the most famous and unique clubs in world football.

I'm with nicktheyid regarding Modric. His mind is set elsewhere now and it's showing in his performances. Leave him out, stick in Gio or someone who needs to put themselves in the shop window by performing.

Since Capello left we've managed to beat Newcastle, Swansea & Stevenage (in a replay). 3 wins from 13 games - that's unacceptable.
Predictions for last 5 games:

QPR - L
Blackburn - D
Bolton - D
Villa - D
Fulham - D

Genuinely don't see us winning another game....... You'd think we'd do Blackburn at home, but in current form it's anyone's guess.

We have suffered defensive problems all season, and that is our main weakness, not lack of spirit or motivation, or Harry getting it wrong, look at our defense, Nelson, King Gallas, all too old for a long campaign, Dawson and the bull are all we have that can go the whole hog, but when they get injured, we become weak at the back, we don't have a stand in for BEA, we don't have a stand in for Walker, by the way, I have seen him walk, this is our main weakness, we are an attacking side with flair and speed, but we must have solidity at the back, it's all too loose, this season is coming to an end and we have the defense that we have, they now need to throw body and limb at everything that is thrown at them, regardless of tired limbs and injury worries, we the fans deserve at least this one small crumb of pride.

Apr 16, 2012 at 3:56 PM | Unregistered Commenterdel

With eight games to go harry came out with we need 5 wins to secure top 4, big mistake subconsciously in the back of players mind they go into a game & say ah well it doesn't matter if we win today bcoz we always have other games to get those 5 wins. All he had to say is we have to take it 1 game at a time & get 3 points the next game & then look at the next game but what he said in 5 wins is also saying we can afford to lose 3, u wouldn't hear Ferguson saying that.
No rotation, talking up the opposition, telling everyone were overachieving & aren't better than rest of top 7, way to go with installing belief in your team.

im always going to be a dick to arsenal why cus arsenal are assholes. and everyone else is a pussy. Pussies don't like dicks, because pussies get fucked by dicks. But dicks also fuck assholes: assholes that just want to shit on everything. Pussies may think they can deal with assholes their way. But the only thing that can fuck an asshole is a dick, with some balls. The problem with dicks is: they fuck too much or fuck when it isn't appropriate - and it takes a pussy to show them that. But sometimes, pussies can be so full of shit that they become assholes themselves... because pussies are an inch and half away from ass holes. I don't know much about this crazy, crazy world, but I do know this: If you don't let us fuck this asshole, we're going to have our dicks and pussies all covered in shit!

It's knee-jerk, yes, but it's only knee-jerk because we are repeating it now, so soon after yesterday, it's not stuff we haven't said for ages now. Who would you absolutely not want to lose from current squad with next season in mind? Assuming previous comments re Luka are correct and I tend to agree, my list is Bale, Kaboul, Parker and an in-form BAE, not the one we saw yesterday and more recently, for God's sake Benny don't play with the Afro! Ade, VDV too inconsistent, brilliant on their day but awol on others. JD my favourite player of the last 10 years and I'll add him if we don't play 4-2-3-1 but my Gran can see that's how we should play and she's been dead for 20 years. Walker not ready, King Ledley, it's time to hang up the boots, Azza, sorry my fellow Yorkie but time's up, Daws certainly loves the club but he's not CL quality. Clearly we need to be thinking about the keeper. But the three key issues for me are 1) world class centre back to play alongside Kaboul 2) who to play alongside Scotty in the midfield two, we all hoped it was Sandro but it isn't, he gives the ball away far too much and 3) who's the lone striker? We don't need to think about the manager; the great man motivator has become an A1 demotivator and his tactical ineptitude is surely laid bare for all to see, including the media who love him because he never fails them with a homespun soundbite when they need one. Yes, I know you should aways have an alternative. It's pointless saying who you want if you're THFC, it will come down to who is available and wants the poison chalice. If you could combine Moyes' organsation and Rodgers' philosophy, that would be nice. Bizarre thing - we could still come 4th, let's put this on hold until after that, if we get 4th it will make so much difference to who we can get.

Levy has showed no ambitions, Harry and the players did also the same. Only some of our supporters are really ambitious. Intelligence is the most important human quality and we have too many brainless players in our squad. That´s the real difference between Spurs and most of top clubs. The lack of intelligent and with a strong personality/winner's mentality players. Even our chairman seems that he misses the intelligence to appoint proper football persons to run the team. That´s the most important shortcoming of Spurs from the businesslike point of view. Spurs are the most failed club between the 15 bigger spenders worldwide. That fact proves something.

Apr 16, 2012 at 4:21 PM | Unregistered CommenterIoanX

Unfortunately it seems our players have nothing left, and it is our rotation or lack of that has caused it. We have gone from one extreme (drop everyone for cup games) to the other (if you can stand up you play) and now the team looks jaded. Nobody is telling me that if for the odd game here or there against bottom half teams, we couldn't have still one with Sandro for Parker, Corluka for Walker, Rose for BAE or Niko for Rafa/Modric.

Unfortunately, we are now in a position where we are going to have to flog this dead horse 5 more times as i can't see the reserves getting match sharp quick enough to get teh points we need. If they had been used more often then we would have had options but now we are left with our core 12/13

I think the only way we will get the wins we need is if we can keep Kaboul, Walker, BAE, Modric, Bale, VDV, Ade, Lennon, Sandro and Parker all fit and focused for every one of our 5 games. (And i would play Gallas over Ledley just now even allowing for Drogba's goal yesterday). Even then i have a real feeling that our season ended when Chelsea went 3-1 up yesterday....

Apr 16, 2012 at 4:23 PM | Unregistered Commentersteve

Someone needs to knee jerk Redknapp into reality. If you are forced to go with no-calf Gallas and no-knees King as your center backs, you had better swap a forward for a defensive mid and plop a Sandro or Livermore in front of them to help out against the likes of Chelsea. Fairly basic stuff and this probably holds true for the remainder of the season. And yes, that was probably the match to politely pull Cudicini to the side, give a pat on the back and tell him that Friedel starts. Harry was on a roll early, but tactically he has been a mess since January and I think he's finally managed himself out of both England and Spurs for next season. Out of respect, Levy will let him finish this season but I don't see him coming back if the FA go with someone else.

I think the fragile mindset that Spooky alludes too is there for all to see and there is every chance that this last result will shatter it unless action is taken swiftly. HR's insistence on using the 442/4411 when we have King/Gallas at the back is naeive at best, stupid at worst... if Parker has a bad game, it all goes to sh*t as neither are the athletes they once were and they can be got at quite easily with our bucaneering full backs offering little help.

Why we cannot set up 4231 I dunno. We don't have the in form options to play 2 out and out strikers, our fit centre halves are slow and Parker and Sandro dovetail beautifully... throw Luka/Bale/VDV infront of them with Ade up top and we can threaten anyone. The full backs can get forward without worrying too much about holes behind. The centre Halves are protected. We can choke teams, certainly those of the calibre we have left to play in our run in. It is, IMO, by far the best formation for the personnel we have available.

Obviously the teams we have left have a lot to play for, PL survival is massive... but they are still the same teams that have struggled all season and we should be dispatching each one in turn. I just hope that HR sees that 4231 is the way we can achieve our last attainable goal... CL Qualification. Then he can f*ck off with my blessing and we can look forward.

The phantom "goal" and the usual tiresome litany of excuses from Redknapp, which are forthcoming after every defeat, shouldn't mask the real reasons for the loss of the game against Chelsea yesterday. First and foremost, regarding yesterday's defeat, it showed yet again that tactically Harry is an imbecile. As soon as I saw the team sheet I knew we would lose. Playing with 4 attacking midfielders and just 2 central midfielders against Chelsea is asinine. The successful blueprint, which was employed against Chelsea at the Bridge recently, was playing 4-5-1 and shoring up the midfield by playing Sandro in front of the back four. It worked like a dream in the second half of that game as we dominated possession and controlled the tempo of the game. Logic would dictate that anyone, with an ounce of tactical acumen, would have repeated the same formula yesterday, against the same opponents, particularly as with Kaboul missing we were going to be additionally exposed for pace in central defence. That would be anyone with an ounce of tactical acumen that did not go by the name of Redknapp. Having Bale and Lennon play wide with VDV as the second striker/advanced attacking midfielder only can work against a team like Chelsea if ALL the aforementioned players "work their socks off" tracking back each time we lose the ball. That happened fairly consistently all afternoon from VDV until he tired and Lennon did some back-tracking, at least enough in the first 45 minutes, for Spurs to achieve some parity of possession and keep Chelsea off-balance with the attacking threat of Bale and Lennon. The first goal was always going to be crucial and just like against Chelsea at the Bridge recently we spurned gilt edged chances to take the lead. Second half was wide open right from the kick-off. Don't be fooled by the Atkinson "goal" debacle, we were being cut wide open already in the first 5 minutes of the second half and it was looking only a matter of time before Chelsea scored. After the second "goal" it was even worse as we were being ripped to shreds in the centre of midfield every time Chelsea broke. Had it not been for the temporary relief of the Bale goal, against the run of play, the result could have been even more humiliating. As has been amply demonstrated, time and time again, against Young Boys, Inter, Arsenal, Chelsea, Man Utd, Norwich just last week (to name but a few games), Redknapp has all the tactical nous of a mollusc! Yesterday was his moment of crowning glory for tactical ineptitude. Whether the FA should now pursue him as England manager after that debacle is open to debate. However, regardless of whether he is the chosen candidate or not, the next 5 games are crucial to his Spurs tenure. If we capitulate as spinelessly and ineptly, as we did yesterday, in the remaining 5 games of the EPL and fail to qualify for the Champions League, the Levy should "pull the trigger" and find a manager that doesn't continually make excuses for failure, has some real tactical sophistication and can pick and mould a team that doesn't choke under pressure.

Apr 16, 2012 at 6:26 PM | Unregistered Commentermatt

Spooky,

I feel your pain. I share it. It hurts. You are right on the above. I think, though, that we are being harsh on Harry: not because I think that he is doing well. No, I think that with the players we have, we could actually win the league or make a good run for it. But we don't have the right manager. It's not his fault, it's just he's Harry Redknapp, he's good, he's not great. We didn't have great expectations when he took over, but then he so overachieved that we thought he was a genius and so now we think he is letting us down. It's not the case. He's not that great a manager to start with. So we can be angry at him, or we can recognize that he's just not good enough, not his fault. He's limited. When Gregor Raziak was playing, were you angry at Raziak for being so useless or at the manager for playing him? Maybe Levy appointing him wasn't such a masterstroke after all.

This is not to say that he doesn't have personal responsibility to carry himself a certain way and stop messing with the England job business. He should be conducting himself much more professionally, but he's Harry Redknapp. He's good, not great.

We need a great manager. Starts with someone who has won titles, and ideally someone who has managed in England. There are not many other options...

And yes, some of the players don't play for the shirt. Did Modric need a shower yesterday? I hope he bathed Parker and thanked him for doing his job for him.

I hope this article is put to room 101 in 5 games, but im afraid im not confident!

Harry has lost the team, the confidence is on the floor. we are so fragile, 1 thing rocks us and we collapse beyond pathetically. we have been HAMMERED embarrassingly on too many occasions this season! He needs to be sacked as a statement of intent from the club to succeed. i know a few of the players and let me assure you they are rocked!

without players close to to modric to play passing interchanging football with like vdv, bale, bae, sandro, he is useless out there, dont doubt his efforts of late, he does alot of running and tries to tackle too! its the way the team is set up! when vdv came off against chealscum modric might as well have sat next to him. i wouldnt mind but he was replaced by defoe who has 1 good game a season!

Lennon played his heart out, so stop criticising him everyone, ventured everywhere to cause damage.
Adybyor- 190 large a week? no first touch, control is awful, nah! not amazing tbh
parker- passionate, drive, representing the fans on the pitch!
Sandro-hardly used, world class, confidence slipping
Bale- never released to do what hes capable of, pulled out of possition, what happened to him tearing down the left wing?
cudiccini- dont want to use bad language on here, harry i wanted to beat chealscum, friedel was the man you *@$%
king- i love you, but your clearly in pain and off the pace
walker- amazing!
bae-amazing

Harry your a discrace, even if you dont care, you got thousands of people who do and you have hung us out to dry. i hope they give the england job to someone else and levy sacks you!

That was our best team out there, I remember thinking as the line-up was announced.
The next thought I had was “I bet Chelsea win this because although they are an awful side, they have players who can conjure up something from nothing, especially on the big stage.”
And so it was with the first goal.
My third thought was “as is usual in games of this magnitude, I hope this isn’t settled by a howler from one of our players or a blatant piece of poor refereeing.” And so it was. At 2-0 I had that old familiar feeling. Dicked again by a richer club. But then, the hope. And that was the worst thing. Worse than expecting to lose.
After number 3, we gave up. I hate seeing that. I watched it happen, and my next thought was “I bet we ship 5 now.”
Psychic? Hardly. I’ve read the script, seen the movie dozens of times and woken up to this awful reality many many times before. I can only conclude we have managed to breed a culture of losing after the lost decade of the 90s and the last decade of playing catch-up.
Then my thoughts turned to the game. A game where we see players hurl racial epithets at each other, where players care more about their new Bentley or latest spit-roast than the shirt, where a calamitous team of mercenary misfits led by an oaf and owned by a gangster supported by pot-bellied racists who think it’s big to mock the dead can con their way into the cup final. Where conning referees is part of the game. Where fair-weather celebrity Arsenal fans from Harrow, Loughton and Cornwall call us “vermin”. Can I really be doing with this any more?
Arsenal are 2-1 down to Wigan at half time. I’ve read that script too. I am expecting them to win 6-2 because it’s not the desolation that hurts, it’s the hope.

Well I doubt any gooner will be here any time soon! hahahaha! I think I remember one of them saying "We do our talking on the pitch" well, you certainly did lads! Look's like my week will just about be bearable now! COYS!

Oh, I didn't dare to dream! Please, Spurs, please win against QPR. Martinez, anyone? He's beaten ManU, Goons and should have beaten Combat18 if the officials hadn't been incompetent.

QPR - massive game. Three points or die.

Red scum play blue scum.

Big weekend.

redknapp is the worst manager in the league, our squad carries him. he never discusses tactics with the players, its just go out boys and do what you do!

i think we need a total clear out starting with the manager(who should have been sacked long time ago). King should be a defensive coach, he has been fantastic for the club, but his knees have now given up and his pace has gone. gallas is a decent back up but he is getting on now and cant play too many games. Dawson is not good enough and should be sold at the end of the season. keep kaboul as he has all the attributes to become a great centre back just needs to sort out his concentration.

get in douglas from twente and samba from blackburn both are quick and very dominant in the air. sell modric he aint interested anymore, even if we only get 30m that is good enough. get in dembele from fulham who is full of tricks and have a great turn of speed and christian eriksen from ajax.

we have to go all out for damaio or llorente, adebayor is a good striker but goes missing in too many games.

levy should have let redknapp go to england straight away, we may get 5m in compensation but we will lose out 30m+ if we miss out on champions league football

This is the weekend that matters, not Sunday, this weekend, this is it! It's wide open again with a group of matches that could go either way!!! If tonight's result does not fire up Spurs, then I'm afraid nothing ever will.

Reading through tonight's comments, I realise how lucky I am to support Spurs. If Arse is represented by Gloating what's his name and old Gooner there, then may God help them all. Im surprised only one genuine Arse supporter has come on here and questioned their language and tone. is this what represents that club now?? I'm happy being who we are, genuine supporters win or lose, or if you like, lose, lose, lose. But to ever become what you two are - never, never, never. You just done get it, you just don't get it!!

It's not an education you need, it's serious psychaitric help!!
