Backbone made of crisps

Spurs 1 Chelsea something something

A ghost goal and phantom tactics...

So basically, in conclusion, the ghost goal becomes less relevant after the fact with every goal that proceeds it?

Okay then.

I'm not going to bother about Cech and if he should have been sent off. Only way that would have happened is if Bale wasn't up there with Adebayor.  Also, I do love how players still call for the goal when they know it hasn't gone over the line. Nice one. John Terry appealing for it even though he has since admitted he knew it wasn't over. Same for Juan Mata.

If it takes a photo from a very specific angle to show the ball DID go over the line, does that excuse a referee giving it on a whim that it was over the line? Referee's ref on gut instinct now? How sure was he in that split second that the entire ball crossed the line? There is no such picture, but it's all a mute point now.

Aside from this pivotal game-influencing moment its nigh impossible to predict what might/might not have happened in its aftermath which is why it should always be imperative that no matter the injustice you just GET THE F*** ON WITH IT. We defaulted to the textbook once more where this is concerned.

Other scratches of head: I would have started Sandro or Livermore instead of Lennon. Friedel should have been between the sticks. We should not have changed shape to 442 and (as cited) we fell apart way too easily, apologetically surrendering space with some woeful defending (regardless of being punished by some superb strikes/finishes). That shift in formation ruined us. Don't think we got the ball out to the flanks as often as we could of either. Gallas was just...<insert what you're thinking here>. Our full backs dizzy. Got into some decent positions, final ball not always the best. Once more no cutting edge. Our fitness, questionable. In conclusion, a completely uninspiring and somewhat unforgivable (second half) performance. Leadership, anyone? Shrewd and patience tactics lacking (remember the Stamford Bridge game)?

That shape you witnessed is one of a pear. I'm not even knee-jerking here.

Thought we looked fairly ominous even though we played alright for an hour or so. It was an evenly balanced game which saw Chelsea get lucky/take their chances. We competed without being spectacular and arguably at times were quite unfortunate. But still a lack of sustained want and desire to really go out there and dominate and bully them. It then turned into 'shades of City at home'. When the third went in, we gave up accepting yet another cruel punchline from the footballing Gods joke book.

It's not in!

Or is it? Parallax error says NO

It was gift wrapped for Chelsea.

Hate the fact that the game changed at 2-0 thanks to  Martin Atkinson. Let's just get this one out the way. I know there are times when refs make genuine mistakes based on instinct, but ***king hell, how was that not cheating? That wasn't an honest mistake, that was a concious decision to make the wrong decision because it felt right for him to react in a dishonest way. Hate the fact there has to be controversy. Hate the fact we had to lose a goal in that manner to then react positively. Hate the fact that we still capitulated and when we do, five is the not-so-magic number these days. Hate the fact that as good as we can be, when we're bad we just melt away. Hate the fact and despise the fact we lost to them lot at Wembley for the first time ever. Hate that not even in my worst nightmare did I expect that scoreline.

I hate that we didn't deserve to win.

Regardless of the phantom goal and the effect it had on the game, it's tiresome that we failed again to contain and channel the anger in the right way. It's a trend against this lot also (decisions going against us) but that's no excuse to accept it and roll with the punches.

It's also a continuation of recent form. We've not had the belief for the best part of this year. Lost our way? That's an understatement. With much irony, have to admit we lack the right level of man-management and decisive responsibility. When there is a certain ilk of pressure, we can't handle it. In the midst of the blip we've been incapable of somehow galvanising (Christ I HATE that word) and recapturing that much required tenacity to fight our way through it. There was a weakness in our game that is sometimes so much stronger than our strengths. Our Adamantium backbone from the first part of the season has turned into one made from crisps. Much like Atiknson and his decision making. Brittle.

But you know what, **** it. I can't do much about it now. Semi-finals since '91 hate on us in this competition. How many is that now? If this is rock bottom its rock bottom because of the expectations we've built up this season. We're disappointed because even though most thought it would be difficult to compete for the top four at the start we've done just that and at times excelled. But we've managed to p*ss it away recently.

We're disappointed because once more we've allowed ourselves to be consumed by the occasion at Wembley. However, there are still five games left in the league, so excuse me for a moment, I'll hold off writing the post-mortem for a few more weeks where CL is concerned.

If this is rock bottom, the only way is up. As long as we have a ladder. We're screwed if anyone is still holding onto that God damn shovel. Last time we lost a semi-final and got written off, you know what happened.

We are Tottenham. I am Tottenham. I wouldn't change it for anything. There's a reason a straitjacket is white.

---

As for the Chelsea fans, are you really that shocked?

"We are extremely disappointed a very small minority of fans embarrassed the club [during min silence for Hillsborough]" - yet another official club statement from CFC.

It's not a minority though is it? It's at the heart of their support. It's the core of their support. It's always been there, it never goes away. I expect nothing less from them and I hope it taints the rest of their innocent fans because they are the ones that need to take responsibility for sharing a stadium with scum.

In addition, reports of the usual anti-Semitic abuse also. Stay classy.

F the ghost goal how can j f in Terry knock over two defenders and the goal keeper and no free kick. Any other game anywhere on the planet wd have given a free kick let alone allow the attacking team an advantage when our keeper is flatout on the ground without even diving. Cheat ski are the most unsporting team in the league.

You lot should seriously consider selling Modric from the very little I saw of the match he looked completely disinterested. Perhaps blood in that Ivorian wonder kid of yours Souleymane Coulibaly and play Giovanni Dos Santos in Modric's position.

Sandro or Livermore instead of Lennon - YES. The little feller is great to watch, but if Spurs are going to win anything he needs to be sold. And Defoe, if there are any takers. You despair when Arry replaces VDV with JD yet again - and we promptly lose control in midfield and concede.
And King - he shouldn't have been selected. We all know - it's sad - but he's finished. Without the energy and speed of Kaboul, cracks can't be papered over. A top ball-playing centre-half is required - this Belgian, Vertongen (?) maybe? (Good reports of Caulker but he's young...).
Sorry chaps but I could go on. Hope Arry doesn't.

Absolutely embarrassing.
Thought Harry couldn't make us more of a laughing stock than after the portsmouth semi, then he went and gave the whole "you spurs fans have never had it so good" comment after only 3 wins in the last 12 last season followed by his court case, followed by not making it to Liverpool away, followed by his courting of the England job, followed by his the current bad run which had the Arsenal spanking and now this! Our once great club is being drag through the shit heap by this clown, the sooner he is gone the better.

Oh but don't forget, we have been playing well and don't deserve lose every week and remember we look "open" when we play 442! these make Wengers excuses look good

From where we were we heard the Chelsea fans chanting "murderers "during the period of silence for the Hillsborough victims which we took to imply that Liverpool supporters had murdered their own fans. It beggars belief.

There were some lovely Chelsea fans on the train to the match that were hilarious and jolly, and the sticking on of Hitler moustaches was such a witty and kind form of banter. #bindippers

I take it on the chin as far as the defeat is concerned - for all the irritation of the ghost goal, we didn't do enough and I think that Harry as got a lot to answer for his silence on the job and his tactical ineptness.

A couple of things, though. We got the racist accusations for being Yids earlier this season, and have even toned down the chants in response. My take was, though, we are Yids because THEY want to turn that into an insult, and WE will turn it into glory; we shouldn't have toned it down. What Badeil had to say was a complete misreading of WHERE the anti-semitism was actually coming from. NOW we get vile Cheatski scum singing during a silence for the dead at Hillsborough, and the customary hissing when they felt confident enough that they had won yesterday. This was not a 'small minority', it is a sizeable group not condemned by either the club or its other supporters. This is a club that is institutionally racist but has too many high level friends to be tarred and feathered in the way that Liverpool have been. And one more thing: Cech couldn't have been sent off, but he COULD have been booked and wasn't. Equally Terry in the ghost goal 'takes out' King and BAE before Mata 'shoots'. The ref sees a ghost, but not a real flesh-eating Zombie who still waits to be tried for racist language. ....... BARCA, BARCA!!!

@ deftonesnut: when spurs and utd had 45points in second, and city was first with 47points. that had never happend before, so many teams with 40 or so points. so when some spurs fans said that, they was right. at that point, it was our best league ever.

FA Cup was always a bonus. Yes it doesnt hurt any less losing like we did but lets man up and secure 4th place now. Have you seen the run-in? We have by far the better fixtures and probably only need 3 more wins to secure 4th. Surely that wont be so bad. Then we can offload Harry, rebuild the team with the glaring players we are missing - CB, winger, striker and kick on. We should only be getting better. If we can't win 3 games against Bolton, Blackburn, QPR, Villa and Fulham then we dont deserve CL anyway! COYS!

now now girls, make nice

Apr 16, 2012 at 12:46 PM | Unregistered Commenterkosherboy

Two things strike me of late:

1 - The great 'man motivator' Redknapp appears not to be capable of actually doing just that. Seeing as that is probably the only quality he might offer as potential England manager he's gradually playing himself out of that job. Picking our second choice goal keeper for the biggest game of the season so far also doesn't exactly show him in a good light.
2 - As I said last week we are now reaping the 'rewards' of failing to strengthen the squad - particularly this January. As a consequence Modric (who has been awful and largely ineffective for months) has no competition for his positon, we have 3 well past their best centre halves and Dawson is continually crocked anyway, Bale and Walker similarly have no competition for their places and bascially it was just a money saving exercise by selling PAV and sending others out on loan.

There is no fight in the players because they don't need to fight. It's all too safe and Harry either lets them get away with it or is unable to accept his part in the decisions.

Apr 16, 2012 at 12:47 PM | Unregistered CommenterJam shoes

A good article. My conversations with fellow Spurs fans before the match, was that, because of the way we have been playing, I expected Chelsea to win. Having heard Harry's pre-match belief that he wanted to win the cup, my doubts became total when Cuddicini played without having match practice since the last round. Sentimentalism should not come into it. Secondly, King being selected showed that Harry has lost it completely because King has also lost it. Had he not thought of recalling Caulker and ignoring Nelson showed that the signing of the latter was just a waste of time.
Ignoring the "phantom" goal - although I think that Mr Atkinson has a regular belief that he can give any decision he likes when Spurs are playing. The man is imcompetent and should be struck off. Perhaps he doesn't realise that his "decisions" can cost clubs many millions of pounds and could lead to the demise of some.
Coming back to the tactics - has anybody noticed the our ability to knock the ball about IN OUR OWN HALF? We had 70% possession against Sunderland most of which was closer to our goal than the"Black Cats". Harry, all that does is to enable our opponents to retreat to their penalty and put up 2 lines of defence.
It would seen that our second striker VDV yesterday was regularly seen behind Modric and Parker. Harry what are you doing?
Finally, rumour has it that contract talks with Harry have broken down. Quite clearly he wants the England job and I hope he goes quickly. Personally, I would see him go this week and I would bring in Terry Venables for the remaining 5 matches

Apr 16, 2012 at 12:49 PM | Unregistered CommenterFred

I am so gutted that we lost this game and that so called 'goa'l does not make it any easier, it appears that we see too many of these bad decisions made by the officials and it really does pee me off and it changed the whole complexion of the game. I, for the life of me, cannot understand how refs & their assistants have been so sub-standard this season. This is not the first bad call we've seen thus far and I'm sure it will not be the last, it beggars belief that footballs governing body are still dragging their feet regarding the introduction of goal line technology, why is that I wonder? Chelscum were very fortunate imo and I feel hurt and upset as most of us do today and even though that's the case, I guess it's just a question of continuing to plod on regardless. COYS TTID!!

"There's a reason a straitjacket is white."

Yep, well I am feeling more mental than usual this morning. An empty shell resonating with the sound of the heavy traffic of despair. Gutted simply doesn't cover it. As pointed out Spooky, the phantom goal is not the issue and there is no need to go over what the issues are because you have covered them and we all know what the problems are (does Harry?).

My biggest problem is the swelling whine of those who have been saying "Harry has to go." and are now moving on to "I told you so." whilst explaining the obvious about our tactical displays. I'm with you, I feel so bad because I expected so much, much more than in any other season from recent years. I too believe that shows we have grown and come far and I take comfort in that.

Apr 16, 2012 at 12:53 PM | Unregistered CommenterJack

Big question that the media would raise now is can Harry pick up the troops for the final 5 games?
My question is why would he want to?
He's in a win-win situation now. For the club to move forward we need a new manager and I think Levy knows it and Harry is sensing it too.
He can walk away from us in the summer, either into the England job or into retirement down in Bournemouth with a nice pay-off.

He doesn't give a toss about whether we now finish 3rd, 4th, 6th or 16th (not that it will come to that!).
I'd also question the mentality of Modric right now. He'll go in the summer to a CL team so why should he raise his game now?

Fred - not sure about Venables - I reckon Benitez could secure CL for us in 5 games though.
In fact, I reckon I could secure it.......

@deftonesnut: sorry for the abuse, i am just upset that spurs have colapsed like this. and i envy you guys havin wenger, he is a manager that knows what to do, when he needs to. end he get young players forward. we have: a old dud, that dont know what to do when he needs to, just sits there parralysed? dont bring young players forward, if it happends it is the circumstances that make it happend, like with bale. so again sorry for the abuse, will watch what i say in the future. in my defence, we have redknapp!!?

Apr 16, 2012 at 1:00 PM | Unregistered Commenterkols

Excellent post as ever, Spooky. I have no idea why Redknapp decided to take off VDV instead of replacing Lennon with Sandro. Once again, he made the Spurs midfield look like a picnic area where Mata and co could gambol to their hearts' desires. No wonder that the creaking defence went into tailspin. Cucini was culpable for the first as well as the fourth goals. I know I'm not a football manager, but perhaps the fact that Redknapp pays scant attention to the defensive midfield organisation is the reason why Modrić has been relatively ineffective. I'm not expecting him to change anything as usual and the best thig is that Levy hasn't given long contracts to any of the octagenerians he has brought in. Roy Keane said there there has always been a question mark over backbone at Spurs and I hope Levy has taken note. I'm hoping against hope that Wigan do us a favour, but it won't happen.
As for all the Woolwich arrivistes, do you not realise that you ate just playing the type of football that was started at Spurs, then moved to Ajax and then brought to Barcelona via Cruyff? Because all you ever played before then was shit. It's always next season with you lot. You have no real DNA of your own, you're just a shoddy creation by Dr Wengerstein, whose hubris will bring you down again.

@kols.... Don't worry lad I would be Steamin after last night aswell! Arsenal have gone through tough times this season and Iam very glad to have someone like wenger in charge it's a credit to his skills Considering at one stage we were 17th! I see what people Write on here and I do wonder if Harry is as useless as you guys say he is I have always considered him to be a good manager but I don't watch tottenham enough to comment on his skills with tactics and such. I don't know if you guys suffer with "plastic fans" like we do! Arsenal have developed a section of support I frankly find embarrassing calling for players and the managers heads on whim.I do feel tottenham have a good team but always seem to have lacked it in the final run in very much like arsenal in the past but saying that I do feel we havent done that this season I actually believe we are stronger than previous years despite the bad start. I do think you can 4th this season and surely with your run In I dont think you should expect any less.@sweetsman.... Chelsea deserved to win, irrespective of that "goal" anyway. However don't you just think in big games against other so called "big clubs" travesties like this always happen to Spurs.I have lost count of the times we've been raped and pillaged by awful seemingly corrupt decisions at Old Trafford. It happens so frequently it has to be by design,It wouldn't surprise me if there is something more sinister going on here.I got the impression that the FA wanted a Chelsea v bindippers final and they contrived to get it.
From where I was at the game yesterday I couldn't possibly tell whether that ball was over the line or not but within three minutes of the incident I received three texts confirming it wasn't.Were any of us shocked by it??? Not really it just happens to Spurs doesn't it? Can it anyone tell me the last time anything like that happened to the arse, man ure or the bindippers, chavs? Redknapp is never going to go overboard about it,he won't want to upset anyone at the FA,but apparently he at least got an apology, what about the thousands of Spurs fans who forked out their cash for another travesty that none of us are even surprised about after all it always happen to us,doesn't it?.
As I travelled to the game yesterday after hearing that Man ure were given another "dubious" penalty just a week after another one,it makes me wonder if the refs are in on all of this.Whether you make allowances for them or not there's no doubt that the refs and officiating is the worse it has been for years if not ever.
We need technology in the sport, but we certainly need better, less corrupt refereeing that's for sure.

@deftonesnut: try watch a match with spurs, when we need going forward,if it is 0-0, or we are trailing behind. we keep the ball on our halv, we do alot of cross-over on our own halv, but we do not go forward. like someone said before her, we had 70% of the posession against sunderland, and did not create shit. and redknapp was satisfied by not conceeding?? what the hell is that, wenger, rednose, even AWB would be furious if they did not score goals with that posession. alomst every manager in known history would, but not redknapp. that`s whats wrong, no ambition,no guts. and we are a relaxed bunch of players, we dont worry about 3 place, bet redknapp dont worry at all. well try to watch a game, and you know what i mean.

Pick it up- forget Chelsea having a CL place next season, I'd be concerned with Newcastle, I am a Gooner & you did not deserve that result, Drop Adebore, sit VDV behind Saha, have your wingers STAY on the wings with Bale/Lennon & park Sandro & Parker in DM. Stop focusing on negatives.

Apr 16, 2012 at 1:47 PM | Unregistered CommenterArse78

Good article as usual Spooky. My 2 penneth is the referee changed the game to such an extent that only 1 result was possible. Remember this is the cnut that didnt give the Clint Hill QPR goal that would have changed the course of that game only a couple of weeks ago. The bollox spouted about these things even out over a season is just that, Spurs have been robbed of goals and conceded a few at crucial times due to diabolical decisions on a regular basis this season, I struggle to think of any 'rubs of the green' that have come our way. (I am sure some twonk of a gooner will quickly put out some for me).

We are Spurs. What has happened this last couple of months (sadly) happens on a regular basis. I happen to think its in our current DNA, when the going gets tough we 'splutter'. (that is a euphemism!) Harry is the best manager we have had for a long while - tactically I agree he gets it wrong too often for my liking and I do agree some of the team selection yesterday was based on emotion (Cuddi & King) rather than hard headed sense, however regardless of what we think the man has always had the dressing room wherever he has managed and that is worth a vast amount IMO (just look at Cheatski under AVB and the difference now with DiMe - he's hardly a super tactician now is he??). Personally I hope he stays. What available manager is going to be better?? (Dont give me the Benitez name either, FFS)

I love my team. I love the players that wear the shirt. I will never give up the dream of winning everything (anything!).

Negativity from fans affects players/teams. If we dont believe how can they? Look at Manure, they are not a team of great players (with a couple of exceptions) nor have they been for a few seasons and yet where are they. They never give up and their fuckwit fans swagger around with the same damn belief/arrogance. As much as I hate them, I do admire them for that.

Keep marching on, keep positive. Fuck the rest of them.

COYS.

Apr 16, 2012 at 2:08 PM | Unregistered Commenterianholford

Forget the game. Done.
Forget 3rd. Done.

Both targets now lost because we do not have enough depth or nous in either the playing side or the infrastructure side to compete over a long season or perhaps of more concern over the next 5 years.

We need to work towards a 5 year development plan on the playing and club infrastructure side. We need integration of these 2 elements. Do any of you think that Levy is bringing 'Arry to the discussion table to fully develop the club? No, is the answer.

My own view is that this is a wise decision as 'Arry is not one to lead a 5 year development plan. Thus, 'Arry. Done.

Yet, this begs the question, if Levy is not including 'Arry in helping develop the vision and infrastructure for the club then why did he keep him? To secure CL this season? Perhaps, but this is to miss the pt. The clubs that succeed have integrated the playing and club sides and have chosen managers that can move between the two; further, they draw on the management to share the development and vision of their clubs.

I submit that the problem is Levy; there were/are plenty of managers available to integrate the playing and infrastructure development sides of the club. He chose not to take this path. He chose the keep them on separate tracks. He chose pliable managers and executives to allow him stand alone over key strategic decisions. He has failed. Levy. Done.

First of all I would like to say I am really glad Spurs lost... I am a Gooner after all. If the boot was on the other foot I am 100% you Spurs boys would feel the same.
I just wanted to say that Tottenham this season up until only a few weeks ago were the best I have seen in a good 25 years.
Next when the wheels did come off as they say ...it really is a blip . Harry and your team have done well ,in fact really well this season , don't do the dirty and turn on them !
We have this double standard at Arsenal and I do not like it.
If your season was the other way around you would be getting serious plaudits right now.
I think Spurs this season seriously scared a lot of teams . Your mistake was at the Emirates and has not been rectified . You actually capitulated in front of everyone big time. Then in you next few games it showed even though you did actually play decently in some of your poor results. This is the thing ... many of your team were just going through the motions and it is a catching bad habit. It was that bad that very decent players like Parker , Adebayor & Bale were showing up the others big time.
I have seen this in my team ( Gooners ) at some times too. This is what seriously annoys me when when the going gets tough the tough get going bollocks . When players consistantly show this trait then yes it's time for the bye byes.
Anyway I love to see Spurs lose but I will be honest and definately say you 100% deserve to be in the top 4. Enough said before I am sick with being too honest.
One final thing I realised only this year is that after going to both derby games we are not that different in having great fans & great teams. Respect to North London. Steve

I think that it´s time to bring back your old slogan "A bookkeeper can't run a football club". I believe those running the club should take full responsibility for missing on the FA cup and facing the danger to miss out also on a place in the CL. After all only they can take important decisions on the club's current and future situation.

"There's a reason a straitjacket is white"! Got Spot on ??

Tactically, I was just fine w/ the 4-4-1-1 and we had the better chances in that first half......VDV missing a 2nd sitter vs CFC that is cleared off the line by a damn CFC defender......can it get any more frustrating ?? And then he lays a lovely cross to Ade , who at his level, should drill it home......Doesn't even get a foot on it and the ball finds woodwork.

The only tactical error was Arry's rolling with our back-up keeps tween the wood.........Why o Why did Arry not start one of our strongest players this year ? Put Drogba & Lampard's goal on Cudicini who lacks the size and extension to adequately get the job done........

But what Atkinson did today was absolutely criminal and changed the entire make-up of that game ........JT bulldozes our entire team......no whistle.......Mata celebrates a goal that doesn't happen...........que the whistle for the goal. Embarrassing.......A disgrace............Same old Same old w/ any fixture involving Chelsea.

5 games left............Its CL or Bust........Modric is probably good as gone if we don't finish in the top 4........Lets not forget how we responded after another FA Semifinal disaster at Wembley..........we punched our ticket into CL at City.........lets hope for a similar response over the next 5.

To explain myself about the Wengerstein comment, Wenger inherited a great defence and then built upon that, producing great football. What I object to is the claims by some Goons that he reinvented football: he didn't, he just reinvented the tripe that they had fed upon for a long time and gave them filet boeuf instead. The hubris is that he forgot about the debt he owed to Graham's defence and set about his project in a half-witted manner, in the process losing a great midfielder in Sylar, I mean Fabregas. Anyone could see that they would be better with a settled back four.
Anyway, this is a Spurs blog. We are stuck in a rut because of the Redknapp-England situation. He is definitely going to take up the job when, not if, it is offered. He had the chance to build something, but it just seems that he does not wish to do so. The next manager will be crucial. There are a number of managers who are capable of building on what is there and I don't think that Benitez should be dismissed so lightly.

Yes - definitely not a "very small minority" disrupting the minute silence. Supporting a football club is like being a member of a family and Chelsea really are the ASBO scum neighbours. I wouldn't have any of their rouble tarnished trophies if it meant having to rub shoulders with pig ignorant glory hunters who idolise a team of cheats led by the racist son of a thief who fucks his best friend and team mate's missus.

Sorry, Arsenal playing the better football? Hmmm, strange how Spurs were named the team playing the best football this season by all managers in the PL.

We brought sexy football over from Hungary in the early 50's. Arsenal pre 1996? HOOF!!!

A few short comments ..
1. No guts in the team yesterday - as Modric, King, Lennon and Bale displayed many times.
2. What's the point of speed up front and on the wings when MF and defense "hold up" play with back passes allowing opposition get behind the ball. Does Harry not see this??
3. Need to get Sandro and Parker playing together to make it to the 4th spot.

Strong LEADERSHIP by management off the field and absolute COMMITMENT by the players on the field can salvage our season. STAND UP and FIGHT. As a Spurs supporter since the mid 60's I knew we had the potential at the beginning of this season. It's time for the manager and the entire team to behave like professionals and give it everthing you've got - NOW it is time to PROVE IT. Arse' opened the door yesterday - EXPLOIT IT and make us PROUD!
