Saha

@philmcnulty: Louis Saha from Everton to Spurs now looking a done deal. Really intriguing move that. #bbcfootball

So today Marseille president Vincent Labrune confirmed he turned down an £18m bid from Tottenham for striker Remy earlier this month. So if true, we look to have the money to spend and the desire to do so. But if this Saha story unfolds into reality and is confirmed then you have to scratch your head and wonder whether the targets we have (that fall into the £15M + category) are few and far between. No chance of a massive signing happening on the last day when selling clubs always enjoy hiking up prices for their star players and forcing a game of cat and mouse that tends to play better across a few days. So Saha, would be a stop gap (on loan). Not bad business if you forget about his proneness to injuries. And if you ignore his 1 goal to 50 shots ratio.

Saha is a deadline day type of signing. Is/can be a quality player. But those injuries...

I'm hoping (praying) this is masterful deflection. If not, and he arrives then perhaps this is finally goodbye to Roman.

"On sunday Bremen did receive a bid for Claudio Pizarro from a Premier league side, but blocked it immediately"

The suggestion is, that was also us.

Looks like we've attempted to sign a big name long term striker, failed, now looking for a short term solution to get us through till the summer.

The Saha deal isn't much of a gamble. At worst he's injured and doesn't play...... Pav's fit most of the time and doesn't play. At best he does a job in a back-up role and knocks in the odd goal here or there.

Evidently the bigger money players are simply not available, or the asking price is above what we're willing to pay.

Still 11 hours to go, so who know's what will happen.

Jim Whites head will definitely explode tonight... not only is it transfer deadline day but there are also several prem games, it will all be far too much for the boy, ambulance on standby please.
Oh yea Saha... No Thanks !

Saha? For Goodness sake..........desperate signing on the last day 12th hour again??
We need a quality striker for the long term ,we should have indentified him long before this and signed by now or got an agreement to buy him in the summer.Saha offers nothing that the russian cant give...........lots of shots and no goals being a speciality

We have so many players who simply never get to play or get 2 minutes as a sub in the 89th minute--Niko, Pav, pienar etc. so why buy more?

Deja Vu with 12 months ago *sigh*

Jan 31, 2012 at 1:15 PM | Unregistered CommenterJamshoes

I don't understand why he's needed though? We don't play Defoe at the moment even though vdV is playing poorly and not scoring so even if we got rid of Pav we've still got a striker on the bench. Loan or not, what's the point in Saha being signed? gotta be a piss takie.

Jan 31, 2012 at 1:19 PM | Unregistered Commenterdrwinston001

Just in case we lose someone to injury. Insurance.

Jan 31, 2012 at 1:19 PM | Registered Commenterspooky

Pav's evidently made it clear he wants to go in this window.
We have no choice but to bring someone in as cover.

If we sign a big money striker, he's only going to do 2 things:
a) Sit on the bench
b) Piss off Adebayor who will see him as a threat.

Then again, with scenario B and the way Ade is playing at the moment, maybe that's not a bad thing.
With Saha it's not a case of spending big and he also doesn't have to prove anything.

Jan 31, 2012 at 1:25 PM | Unregistered CommenterWalkerboy

This has to be a replcement for Pav as Dos Dantos is not going to move.Talk of peanuts going the other way??Still in hope something will happen hoever as you say last minute big deals are few and far between.Maybe making Ade a permanent deal and Tevez on loan.Maybe selling Pav and Defoe and getting Damaio and Tevez!!!!!!!!!!!The dream goes on.
To Dare is to Dream.

Don't think Pienaar will be going in the opposite direction.

Jan 31, 2012 at 1:41 PM | Registered Commenterspooky

What seems to be missing here is the matter of fact that a january transfer window is nothing like the summer transfer window, and nor should it be seen as one.
It is a time to buy essential needs..., i.e., we need a CB for cover.
Any other players to come in now would be ridiculous business. Of course if we pulled off a massive coup, and signed, maybe Lass or Benzema, then it is a different matter altogether. The chances of that are NILL, now or ever!
The jauary transfer window is risky and should not be seen as a time to make choice purchases. Prices can and will be obscene - AKA; Carrol & Torres (and most other players). This is also an opinion shared by Levy himself.
To expect massive signings - global stars, or in fact pretty decent players, is completely bonkers and to those who think we are missing out on big names and we are not buying enough, well, I'm sorry but you should know by now that we are a sustainable football club. We are not going to risk the establishment we have been building since Levy came in for ridiculous panic buys, massive stars and to please the fans.
We are doing well now, finally making an impact, and it has been good slow progress for years. We have good cover for nearly all our positions and we have a second 11 that sit on the bench that would be good enough for most clubs in the prem.

Saha, if true, could be a good bit of trade, and on loan - a no brainer really. Other than that though, unless we grab Samba, I am not going to expect anyone coming. There is no need whatsoever. And i say that cautiously too....I know we need more goals and a 20+ a season striker, but January is not the time to buy one.

To all other Spurs fans who believe we need the moon on a stick every transfer window.....Stop moaning, we are Tottenham fans and this is how it is. We are not Man city or Chelsea, and yet we sit 3rd in the league. Be grateful you are not a supporter of another club who has it way, way worse!

/\ on the money /\

Jan 31, 2012 at 1:46 PM | Registered Commenterspooky

Leroy - agree with most of that there. Although I am not sure why we would need CB cover when we have King, Kaboul, Dawson and Bassong as cover, Gallas to turn up when he decides to show his face!

Jan 31, 2012 at 1:48 PM | Unregistered CommenterTonyRich

Also Leroy - you say we need more goals....do we? We are 3rd top scorers in the league - behind Man C and Man U who have dished out a few unnecessary hammerings which bolster their record. Ade and Defoe are still scoring 1 in 2. I would like more goals sure, but I am not sure that that is the problem (if any). For me the biggest threats to Spurs's season is cover for key players, and the lack of useful options from the bench - plan B etc...

Jan 31, 2012 at 1:55 PM | Unregistered CommenterTonyRich

We need cover in case our forwards get injured.

Another top top drawer forward though would elevate us. A problem for the summer it would seem, as we need to see what we do with Adebayor and whether we do make a shift to 2 up front or continue to play with a midfielder in the hole behind the lone striker.

Jan 31, 2012 at 1:58 PM | Registered Commenterspooky

Re Saha possibly turning out to be a good move.

How many of us said the same thing about Pienaar last year? He's another Frazier Campbell. He's another Pav. That fourth striker (if you see VdV as a striker) who will ping balls at Brad, Monday - Friday, and make an appearance just as the regulars are leaving to get a seat from White Hart Lane station.

Jan 31, 2012 at 1:58 PM | Unregistered CommenterChris King

i hope this is true. This guy has been playing within himself for years now. He needs a kick up the arse and is potentially a match winner and a line leader for us. He is a good all round forward and he can actually head the ball too.

I agree with most of the comments here too and the sentiment about not playing our squad players. Was Niko injured for the FA cup game? If not if i were him i'd be devastated at the moment . Sell the poor fella on and bring in someone who Harry is gonna pick to play the odd game.

Jan 31, 2012 at 1:59 PM | Unregistered Commenterross

Oh and Leroy,
I couldn't agree less with the idea that we need a CB. We're solid for now in this position. Whats the point in signing someone to sit on the bench? We need goals and creativity. This what if scenario of ADE or Bale getting injured could ruin our hopes. Don't forget , if the wheels were to come off this season and the unthinkable happens we lose our current team. There were glimpses of the impact of the city loss in the FA cup game on our best players. We need a lift and a new threat. Don't forget also that there is now way that both Chelsea and Arsenal will be as poor till May as they have been.

Ross - this is basically what I said earlier.

Jan 31, 2012 at 2:33 PM | Unregistered CommenterTonyRich

BBC now saying that we're BUYING Saha on an 18 month contract....... Pienaar also still likely to go the other way.

Jan 31, 2012 at 2:35 PM | Unregistered CommenterWalkerboy

Saha has to be the most under-whelming piece of news I have heard since we signed Tremazzani ! The guy is either crap or injured - usually the latter. If you were a Spurs player and saw this what would you think ? The option of Rodellega makes much more sense. Think he is potentially a very good player who is unfortunately in a very poor team. Could be a real star in a good side that creates a lot of chances - like us. If we sign Saha then our season might as well finish tomorrow because all it demonstrates is that we are just playing to hang on to 3rd place and lack the ambition to challenge.

Jan 31, 2012 at 2:38 PM | Unregistered Commenterdave

we are supposed to sign players to give us a lift not sign players to give them the kick up the proverbial that they need. saha was best mates with micheal owen, hargreaves and anderton so cant see how he is cured all of a sudden.

I laugh in your face .....pah! What's wrong with chasing 3rd place? It's better than 4th innit?

Feb 1, 2012 at 10:31 AM | Unregistered CommenterWisky Tom

"hanging onto 3rd place" are you for real??? I would be over the moon with 3rd spot, bloody hell guys how long have you supported Spurs??

3rd Spot is incredible progress by Harry and the Lads. Dont get me wrong if we did better wonderful but Im actually more than ok with the transfer business done this window.

We've replaced Pav who lets face it wasnt happy and couldnt play as a lone striker with someone who if needed theoretically can and if on his game is actually quite a good player. Seb, gets some game time as does Charlie, which mean their values hold rather than rotting on the bench.

Levy is saving the pennies for the Summer as he doesnt need to spalsh out at the moment. We have a VERY good team which is doing just fine without any meddling. All we needed were players to plug the gaps during injury which Saha and Nelson both do.
