Pav the Disney villain as we wave goodbye to Mickey Mouse

I applaud you, you the faithful that travelled up to Stoke.

I spent yesterday evening recording episode nine of The Fighting Cock podcast. Was still 0-0 when I left North London to travel back into the depths of Epping Forest and had to make do with watching the penalty shout-out on Twitter. Struggling to understand how we lost if Pav scored two points for his conversion. To think I thought we played a fairly experienced side (in part) and yet no goals in 120 minutes of play?

Pens are always a lottery although more a formality for the opposition when up against us. I should be despondent with us getting knocked out so early (a cup run is a cup run after all and Wembley is still Wembley) but I guess I've finally being turned by Champions League qualification. It's the way she lifts her skirt up and reveals her panties. Gets me every time. I've been seduced and therefore do not feel anything other than numb frustration we couldn't score.

I guess Harry has validated his pre-match soundbiting that he never wanted to get rid of Crouch of Palacios. We would have won if we had them both #footielogic.

I'm told Gomes was 'alright' but along with Gio and Pav, almost disinterested in terms of tangible effort. Just players going through the motions. Not sure why people wish to slate him (Gomes) for not saving a single penalty. I know he's a shot-stopper, but pens are always down to how good the pen is when taken.

Roman has more or less cemented his Jan move away if you happened to listen to the commentary on the radio or worst still, been there to witness it - he was apparently shocking. Body language was oozing negativity and his play was abysmal. I guess the lad is still trying to settle in England and learn the language, bless. And perhaps people will finally let go of the dos Santos in good Spurs performance dream once and for all as he was equally poor.

Carroll played well. Beef him up a bit I reckon. He'll be some player when he finally reaches 12 years of age. Townsend also looked bright. Not sure what a Lluongo is exactly, but chin up lad and well done for having a go.

All this is the consensus by the way, not opinion. If anyone at the game disagrees, then please share.

Positives? Four clean sheets on the trot (DVD?). Sandro and Gallas are back playing and Rafa gets to push on towards full fitness (if that's even possible with him).

I guess its disappointing we're out but the yoof players still have Europa to accumulate those precious minutes of experience. In the end, patched up side of first teamers, benchers and kids not creative enough and without cutting edge to progress.

That's all I've got.

Onwards to Wigan.

I understand the need to rotate squad and all that but losing is still very frustrating.

We need to create a winning mentality and that means winning everything.

Alot of the players were experienced enough and good enough to have won that game.

Pissed off.

as one of the many who made the trip I've got to say it was the worst game of football (from both sides) I've seen since a 0-0 home draw against Coventry in 1999.

I've never understood the love for Pav or Gio. Neither has ever impressed in a Spurs shirt, and I guess you could say neither has been given a sustained run in the side but there's a reason for that. They're both crap.

Some good performances from some of the youngsters, in particular Jake Livermore who impresses me every time he's played this season. I'd argue he's getting to the stage where he's too good to be sitting on our bench and could perform well for one of the mid table teams in the league.

Don't understand the hate for Gomes based on last night's performance. He had very little to do so wouldn't give him a high rating but it's a penalty shoot out for christ's sake. A keeper really should never be given the chance to save a penalty.

Tactically we were all over the place with no real formation to speak of and I can't be the only one who's sick to death of vdV trying to play Roy of the Rovers?

2 attempts on target over 120mins. Not sure if that says more about midfield than the forwards. Defoe and Pav both usually fancy a 25 yarder or 7. Were they not picking the ball up in those positions?

Sounds like Harry didn't give a shit and thus, neither did the players.

Waste of an evening for all concerned.

Its the same cup as ever other country has. We then have The FA Cup as a bonus. It annoys me the disrespect clubs pay this cup. Its a total disgrace

My thoughts exactly spooky.

The only reason he didnt sell Pav was because he didnt have a replacement.

He's made it clear Pav wont be featuring in any important games unless there's injuries.

When he was listing his attacking options at the weekend Harry never even mentioned him.

No new contract has happened as Pav and his agent were talking about over the summer so I'd imagine he's off in Jan. You can see from his body language he knows he's playing as a stop gap.

May as well as just played Kane or Coulibally.

Another good game to blood the kids and get some game time into Bassong, Corluka, VDV and Sandro. Hope the 120 minutes doesnt take a drain on Ekotto for the weekend. Expect Wigan to target him.

Sep 21, 2011 at 12:28 PM | Unregistered CommenterSpurfect

Pav's attitude sucks. He is not a winner. he is brilliant and shit in equal measures, trouble is you never know whether you will get Brilliant Pav or Shit Pav. and thats not on a game to game basis, that is on a touch to touch basis.

Stoke (a) is always tough. They have 4 pts from LFC & Chavs this season. The fact our team of mainly reserves, fringe and yoof held out is a credit. Thats as good as the Chav A team did!

In the big picture, I would rather rest the key men for Wigan than risk a pounding from Stoke's giants. Its just a shame the backup players failed to make any real impression, which is a worry should we pick up key injuries.

might need to keep the likes of pav in jan
if ady continues this spree city will simply call him back early from his loan spell if for nothing else but to stop us catching them
time will tell

If we had played Mod, Bale and Ade and one of them got injured or we lost against Wigan we would all be moaning about no squad rotation/overrusing and burning out our star players etc etc.

We learned from last season that he had to use the squad better this time around. VDV and Sandro needed game time to get back to fitness and the likes of Bassong to play himself into form. Players like Livermore are never going to develop into first teamers unless we play them.

On paper the starting team only included a couple of players who havent either been first team regulars or seasoned internationals.

The real problem last night for me is the players who many say (said is prob more accurate now) should be in our first team, but arent taking the opportunity to stake a claim for a place. Pav, Gio and Gomes are the obvious candidates. A combination of mental frailty (perhaps a lack of self confidence) or perhaps pique at being used as second stringers, meant that they performed nowhere near the level of which they are supposedly capable.

Pav (who many on here thought was our best striker last year) has played three times this season and been awful every time. From what I heard (only BBC radio) it sounded like Gomes had his customary couple of mad moments and got rescued by Sandro's goal line clearance(?)

Anyway we kep our 4th clean sheet in a row, have VDV, Sandro and possibly Gallas ready for first team action soon and hopefully morale boosting games against Wigan and Shamrock to prepare us for the goons.

Praying that Ade doesnt get injured though (and Benny, he could have done without 120 mins)

Sep 21, 2011 at 12:43 PM | Unregistered Commenterleonardo

Our strikers look toothless without Adebayor. Just like last season.

Sep 21, 2011 at 12:47 PM | Unregistered Commentercoys

Why is Harry just sticking any team together to get through 90 mins, we finishe up with this team Luongo Carroll Livermore Townsend . On the bench was the two Spanish lads Falque in particular looked good in the Ufas and a few friendly games yet he was kept benched for Luongo who had not played at this level or even in the Ufas, So the question needs asking why did Harry leave this tricky player idle. Also why did he not start with Townsend or use Bostock Parret who are all more experiences than poor Luongo in the end inexperience and miserable wantawy Pav cost u Gallas should have played at Stoke not against Brentford with Bostock and Parret and Coulibaly who would hhave bean better than Pav.

Sep 21, 2011 at 12:48 PM | Unregistered CommenterColgadaffi

Its a years long, they cant call him back.

Hopefully we'll move early and bring Damiao in (Brazilian season has finished then) then Pav can go off to Russia.

Going out at the first stage of the League Cup two years in a row really isn't good. If some of our injuries were back though the team wouldve been alot stronger with the likes of Pienaar and Hudd in the midfield.

Sep 21, 2011 at 12:49 PM | Unregistered CommenterSpurfect

Hindsight is a wondeful thing guys.

On the subject of Pav, do you really think Harry can have a £13m, £40-350k a week forward rotting away in the reserves while he plays 16 year olds (coubily), come on guys, thats a bit niave

Sep 21, 2011 at 1:07 PM | Unregistered CommenterOssie

Is the Russian Tranny window shut yet? That's not a reference to some back street brothel in Moscow.....
Wouldn't surprise me if Pav was sold if the window were still open (as the Turkish one is). Stories linking him with Lokomotiv Moscow today.

Can't say I'm too disappointed with the result last night. Seems like we turned up with lads who were there just for a bit of fitness rather than to prove a point to anyone. Saying that, with us not having a reserve team as such, these opportunities will disappear if we keep exiting the competitions early on.

Sep 21, 2011 at 1:09 PM | Unregistered CommenterWalkerboy

Fed up striker misses pen at one end, fed up goalie doesn't save any at the other. It's hardly surprising. And I think Gio gave up on Spurs a while ago and probably doesn't want to do well now in case we keep him even longer.

I hate it when Spurs lose any match but I'm not that bothered about the Carling Cup. It'll mean less money spent on tickets to unimportant midweek matches.

Sep 21, 2011 at 1:22 PM | Unregistered Commenteriain

Last night is a massive plus for us. We do not need the carling cup this year. This season is potentially so defining for us that we need as little distraction from the EPL as possible. My favourite moment as a spurs fan was Woodgates goal to beat the cheats at Wembley (watched in the boozer with my blues fan father in law) but we have surely moved on as a club. We have a major chance to echo past greats by winning the Uefa cup and get back in to the Champions league places. On the evidence of the game in Greece qualification from the group should be a formality with the up and coming/fringe players getting much needed game time and invaluable experience. Once we make the knock out stages Arry will play a stronger team and I believe that is our best chance of Silver ware. Over two legs I would fancy us to take any of the teams currently in the competition or the expected champions league drop outs.

If we can keep one or two of the really key figures fit (Adebayor, Modric, Bale & King) then we have a real chance of getting 4th and maybe even pinching 3rd from Chelsea, oh the irony. Let's not get carried away with the prospect of a wembley day out and the Carling cup. The Uefa Champions League is where it's at fact. I've NEVER walked taller as a spurs fan then I did last year. When we went toe to toe with and beat some of the biggest names in Europe. Nothing domestically compares to that in my opinion. It's nice to beat the scum and Chelsea (maybe someday Utd) but that should be expected now. We have proven we can beat anyone at home and we have derailed Liverpools early season Momentum.

We are in a position now to strangle the life out our opponents in the 'battle for 4th' by maintaining this form. Beat Wigan and roll into the NLD and turn the screw on the voyeur up the road!!!

get that lazy, good for nothing, waste of space out of here. Pav is setting a bad example to the youth players and his negative energy is infusing the enthusiasm and motivation of the rest of the players. Terminate his contract immediately or make him train by himself. Don't want him near the lineup in any competition, don't even want him near the squad in training. GET RID

Sep 21, 2011 at 1:42 PM | Unregistered Commentercute

We need to keep giving our youngsters these opportunities to get experience, it's these kind of games that will give them the tools they need to eventually turn in good performances for Brentford or Crewe after we have decided they aren't all that great.

Sep 21, 2011 at 1:44 PM | Unregistered CommenterPLN

25% of the trophies up for grabs now out of reach within a month of the season starting.

I take it everyone who thinks this is a crap competition has burned their souvenir flags from Wembley when we beat Chelski?
Also looks like it should be easy to get a ticket for FA Cup final this season as apparently that is also not worth anything in its own right.

felt sorry for anybody taking young kids to the match for the 1st time last night, must have put them off forever!!. Cant recall a match like that 4 years. Pav was a disgrace, back 4 ok, carroll, Lvmore, defoe. ok . GIO was rubbish. how can he be so good 4 country, but u.s. 4 us. Thank god 4 the hotel across the road after the match, a few stellas and weve forgot about our 3hrs of boredom, roll on Wigan!

Sep 21, 2011 at 1:57 PM | Unregistered Commenterwolvesyid

Dont need this cup! BOLLOX!!! Football is about winning cups! Not about finishing in a position to qualify for another cup! We enter The LEAGUE Cup, to win it. We qualify for The Europa cup and what do we do, stick a weak team out, not wanting to be in it! Its a joke. If we dont want to field strong teams, to win every cup we enter. Then we may aswell fold the club!!! Unless people are happy just to finish 4th and say. "Oh look we can qualify for a cup! We havent won fuck all, but thats ok!" The people that would rather finish 4th than win a cup, have a losers mind set!

Is it just me or is going to Stoke like going north of the wall to face the white walkers in Game of Thrones? Definitely don't play the 1st teamers. They might come home without heads or hands. Or even yet, come home as zombies. Pav already is one apparently.

forget the carling cup,if spurs want to finish top 4 we have to get maximum points the wigans, swnseas etc. cause these games were our stumbling block last year

Sep 21, 2011 at 3:56 PM | Unregistered Commenterchivers

We just love a good scapegoat or two don't we...lets drum them out of the club. Now! We'll be much better off without them...until we find the next one to relentlessly blame for every failure (Jenas, Crouch, Pav, Gomes, Keano...)

On which note, was good to see senior pro, and fans favourite BAE stepping up to take a pen and not leaving it to 18 year olds...what do you mean no one's mentioned that he didn't? *Shock*

I'm well aware of the irony of the two points above...it was kind of the point.

Sep 21, 2011 at 4:46 PM | Unregistered CommenterJH

JH, good points both and I say that as a founding member of the BAE appreciation society. That's what was so frustrating about not being able to see that match--I was surprised at the penalty takers, both who did and who didn't . I would have liked to see what happened there, was there already a list or was it decided after overtime? After the first 5, did they know who was next or was it really a matter of players being shoved towards the spot?

Also spot on about scapegoats, we always seem to have a hate figure. Don't see the point myself. Sure, I have one particular player I don't care for (Defoe--was glad to see him leave, pissed when he came back) but I will and recently have credited him when he's done well.

Sep 21, 2011 at 4:59 PM | Unregistered Commenterziegemonster

Dr Winston - you clearly never went to Wigan away last season. That was the single worst game of football I have EVER seen Spurs play in my 20 years watching them.
Re: Pav - the guy doesnt care because he never gets a fair rub of the green. When he scores goals he doesn't start and when he doesn't score he gets dropped. This has always been the case under Redknapp. Bottom line is Redknapp doesnt like players he can't relate to. He drinks lots of Bordeaux so can relate to the French and goes on holidays to Croatia. Who wants to bet me £20 that if Pav went elsewhere he'd score 20 goals in his first season?

Sep 21, 2011 at 6:32 PM | Unregistered CommenterChiefy

i can take the loss i suppose, townsend looks decent and carroll looks like an up and coming superstar. i agree with you though mate, he needs bulking up, but hes young and im sure he will gain in a couple of years. this season isnt dying after losing to 2 super rich manchester teams and going out the cup. europa, fa cup and top 4 battle is on for us and im going to enjoy it! :O) (from deepest darkest epping forest too lol)

Sep 22, 2011 at 12:11 AM | Unregistered Commenterspurs muaythai

It shouldn't be forgotten that Pav was a last minute panic buy after Berbatov was let go in the summer 08 window. BMJ was still in charge then, so that was two managers ago. I can only assume he's still with us as he's shown nothing like the quality that would fetch £14m from another club.
I'm struggling to think of any Russian/Ukrainian player that has been a hit in the EPL. Any takers?

Kanchelskis...... though he was possibly pre-PL.

Arshavin and bilyaletinov at everton are more then decent players , no ?

Sep 22, 2011 at 1:25 PM | Unregistered Commenterbelgian spur

Arshavin is quality, just not used correctly by that lot.

Billy at Everton is pretty much comparable to Pav, blows hot and cold (mostly cold)

Sep 22, 2011 at 3:02 PM | Unregistered CommenterPLN

PLN , i am sure Arshavin at Manu , Spurs or even City would be a great player. And ever since that penalty incident where he convinced the referee that he just stumbled and that it wasn't a penalty nor a card he is one of few players i have respect for.
