Group hug

Dry your eyes lads. At least we have a cup final to look forward to this Saturday.

As for tonight, I made it clear I didn't care for pre-match selection and if that meant making 10 changes to the side to protect other priorities, regardless, I would not be using that as an excuse post-final whistle. Unlike say our neighbours always manage to do. I wanted 110%. Sadly the side could only give about 60%. The reality is you don't win anything with a patched up team that hand out gifts to an opposition that will be nothing less than clinical in acceptance.

Too much belly-button fluff from us. And their belly-button fluff congealed far better than ours.

The less said about the defending the better. Harry probably got what he wanted. No more Carling Cup games to interfere with the schedule. I feel all dirty for saying that. Sell-out. Cue various shrug type sound-bites from Harry and the Sunday Supplement crew positively creaming their pants. Heads up and just avoid the rags. You'll work your way through it, no problem.

At least Sandro looked decent.

Lesson to be learnt? In future, regardless of what else is going on around us in terms of competitions, never...never ever play a weakened side against the enemy. Yes, the EPL is more important. Yes we do not want players picking up needless injuries...but this is the NLD. Reserve game or otherwise. It's a crock to lose it.

COYS. Onwards.

Cheated?

Gibbs goal wrongfully disallowed.

Keane goal offside.

Lansbury fouled by Assou E for pen not given.

First pen looked like a dive to me.

Second pen was 100% a penalty.

Let's not forget your lot spending the entire first half hacking our players down, is that not cheating. I think you'll find it is. Take of the glasses lads.

Sep 21, 2010 at 11:49 PM | Unregistered CommenterDan

You didn't cheat. Let's not be latching onto the silliness.

Sep 21, 2010 at 11:50 PM | Registered Commenterspooky

So much for the depth of our squad then ...

And doubly sad that Keane and Pav represent our "squad."

Hate to say it but Dan does make a good point, the muggy cheating c*nt.

Dan. Point made. Now go back to your boring little life, you boring little man Dan.

We need to ask the Arsenal ex Captain Gallas to tell us why Arsenal
all look skinny fall over so easy when tackled and run forever so they can keep passing for 90 mins +and Chelsea are the heaviest squad 13 stone Arsenal are the lightest 11 energy makes you lose weight Muscles can be made ?

Sep 21, 2010 at 11:57 PM | Unregistered CommenterHightempo

Cheer up lads. Nothing to be down about. Things like this happen all the time. We're out of the carling cup, so there goes our season. We won't make it out of the champions league group stages, and we won't win the FA cup. We haven't won the league in 50 years and that's not about to change with or without VDV. Maybe he should've gone to the scum instead of us. They probably didn't want him because 18 year old Wilshere is better. Come to think of it, Jack is better than Kranjcar, Modric and any other foreigner other than Cesc of course. Its just a sad day, but all I can do is look forward to the future. COYS!!!!

Sep 21, 2010 at 11:58 PM | Unregistered CommenterYiddosandwich

Cheating is when you gain an unfair advantage by doing something illegal - like diving in the box under half a challenge not kicking 10 lumps of shit out of your very over strength team for a Carling Cup match - eh??

Palacios, Bently, GIO and have to say Pav and Keane are all players that just don't quite cut it for me.
Bae has hit a bit of the mucky stuff too, gonna need some rediscovering of form if we r to have
back to back good season's.

Eidur on one leg offers tons more than this lo at the momentt ! fact !

Sep 22, 2010 at 12:03 AM | Unregistered CommenterSPURSINCE82

Having been at the match and and stayed till the end first point is that we started with Bentley on the left instead of the right with Gio on the right instead of the left. What happened to playing players in their natural position Harry?. Second we had players going down with cramp with not one Arsenal player having an issue with this. It's clear our fitness regime is lacking and needs improvement. Sandro had decent game for a first match and so did Caulker with Bassong .
However yet again we didn't have a leader on the field to drive forward and give some direction to the play and resorted to passing backwards and sideways again instead of trying to get into their penalty area to score. We should have started with more experience in midfield and playing Wilson as an offensive midfielder just doesn't work.
I worry that Harry just doesn't seem to realise the obvious at times and needs to be prepared to learn more from experience.

All Arsehole fans are scummy cunts! Fact! Now bring on the Hammers with our real team.

Sep 22, 2010 at 12:05 AM | Unregistered CommenterTony THFC

Oh Dan, the old 5-1 kids thing? Let's have a look at the teams, eh:

Tottenham: Cerny, Chimbonda, Dawson, King, Lee, Lennon (Huddlestone 74), Jenas, Tainio, Malbranque, Keane (Boateng 64), Berbatov (Defoe 64).

Arsenal: Fabianski, Sagna, Justin Hoyte, Gallas, Traore (Eduardo 65), Hleb, Denilson (Fabregas 18), Silva, Diaby, Walcott (Adebayor 65), Bendtner.

So, a fairly mediocre-on-paper team ripped a pretty good-on-paper team to shreds that night. We played well then, but hey, overall that year we weren't so good. And tonight, a probably slightly-stronger-on-paper team whipped a probably slightly-weaker-on-paper team. Fair dos. The better team won.

You put out a team for a given situation and you hope they play well. If they don't, there's no point in wriggling about making excuses about the nature of that situation or the team. That's all there is to it. Move on.

Sep 22, 2010 at 12:05 AM | Unregistered CommenterMorningoil

@Morningoil.

We had 7 Teenagers playing that night:

Hoyte, Traore, Denilson (Fabregas 18), Diaby, Walcott, Bendtner.

Hence why I wrote, a team made up mostly of teenagers.

Sep 22, 2010 at 12:11 AM | Unregistered CommenterTony THFC

To be that in perspective, you had 1 teenager playing tonight. We had 2 tonight. We had 7 on "that night".

Sep 22, 2010 at 12:11 AM | Unregistered CommenterDan

Spooky - you make a good point about the difference between Spurs and Arsenal 2nd strings. There was very little to choose between this lot and Arsenal's best XI in terms of style and probably effectiveness too. Some of the football was great. Whereas we looked like a bunch of clueless hackers.

What's the answer? Get some smart cookie to embed a culture of football deep into the club so that youngsters can emerge into the 1st team playing proper football and not be like a rabbit in the headlights? Is that a question of time, or ... ? I don't know, but tonight was a really clear illustration that we actually have very little depth.

Also, is it just me, or does Kyle Naughton - like Bentley - look like he doesn't have what it takes at this level and never will?

Sep 22, 2010 at 12:13 AM | Unregistered CommenterMorningoil

Thanks PK.

Personally I don't feel guilty about leaving when the score hit 1-4 and I was getting bored of dodging coins.

Sep 22, 2010 at 12:22 AM | Unregistered CommenterDan

Dan - fair enough, you chose your words more carefully than I gave you credit for. Is it fair to make a distinction between teenagers who are established 1st teamers and teenagers per se? My point being that when we do judge the value of a result, it's not so much the age of the teams that matters, as their quality. Arsenal have a seriously enviable track record in finding young players and bringing them on so that they can compete at the highest level early in their careers. And that's great - but there's a world of difference between Fabregas, Walcott, Bendtner and Diaby, and Livermore and Caulker. I mean, relative to the overall excellence of the squads, you put out a better team in 2008 than we did tonight, right? That's all I'm driving at.

Anyway, as I say, you choose a team - we chose a team, it wasn't very good - I hope we learn our lessons and I very much hope we give you a better game next time ........

At the time (Jan or Feb 2007) those teenagers weren't established 1st teamers by a long shot. In fact only, Cesc was anywhere near our starting XI.

The fact that you think they were says as much about their development to this point and the use us playing the "kids" in this shitty competition as opposed to what you saw tonight with older reserve players.

In fact Clichy, Djourou, Eboue (21 though), Wilshere, Gibbs, Denilson, Cesc, Ramsey, Vela, Diaby, RVP, Bendtner, Kolo Toure (21 also) all started in the Carling Cup teams as teenagers way b4 the starting XI.

Stupid ARSEcunts, they've got 39 trophies and we've only got 23. We haven't won the league in 50 years and they've won 7 since then and 13 in total, but we do have a mickey mouse cup from a few years back. That'll teach 'em!!!

Dunno bout Walcott over Lennon to be honest. Lennon has been rubbish recently but I still look at Theo and wonder if he knows where he is a lot of the time.

Sep 22, 2010 at 12:35 AM | Unregistered CommenterDan

The fact is that Wenger's a better manager than Harry and this shows in the tactics and how the overall squad competes and performs. It's a really poor showing at home, make no excuses, but we got what we deserve. If Harry moans about the players' fitness, who's fault is that? Let's just hope the first XI get us back on track this weekend.

If that was an "outstanding" performance according to Wenger - good luck in 90 mins against Chelski - HAHA! Yeah thats right, we beat them last season and the season before - forgotten how it feels??

We beat them the season before.

Sep 22, 2010 at 12:41 AM | Unregistered CommenterDan

@Docomospur spoken like a real football fan. The problem is, instead of striving to be the best in the league, you lot sell yourselves short only striving to be better than Arsenal. That is the no 1 problem. How can a club go about business with the mindset of "we'll finish higher than Arsenal in the champions league" or hopefully we can get in the top 4? Your coach is too bothered trying to be manager of the English national team instead of building you something long lasting. And that my friends, is my last post. Till we meet again :D

We won the emirates cup 2 months ago if you're gonna count this shitty reserve/youth cup as a trophy.

I was talking about winning the league dave.

You all see our point about how shit the cup is now don't ya? You dismiss it now by playing reserve and youth players. Make up your mind fellas, is it an awesome trophy to win or does it just get in the way of the league and champs league. Make up your mind.

"You cant have it both ways can you?"

Arshavin > Aaron Lennon right now Dan.

Sep 22, 2010 at 12:53 AM | Unregistered Commenternycyid

Dan - righto, you know your team better than I do. Time flies and that. I still think taken as a whole that that was a relatively stronger team than the team Spurs put out tonight, but I also still think it doesn't matter too much. As I say, here's to a closer contest next time.

The curse of nippy English wingers, eh. Lennon and Walcott. It sounds like a brand of organic ice-cream. Or something.

Sep 22, 2010 at 12:54 AM | Unregistered CommenterMorningoil

Start on a positive: the 10,000 or so at the end are true fans, singing our little hearts out despite being 4-1 down, made my hair stand on end a little to see such noble support.

To be fair, although the players weren't amazing today, some blame has to be given to Redknapp. You play a team to win the game, and our team was over-run in almost every position on paper.

To throw in Caulker, Sandro, and Livermore for their debuts in a NLD was very brave (Caulker no choice, as our defensive injuries are Woodgate, King, Dawson, Kaboul, Gallas, Corluka). There was no creative influence on the pitch in either Bale, Modric or VdV, there wasn't the bite of Hudd or pace of Lennon.

Bentley is shite, as a winger his inability to take the ball forward amazes me. Benny is a liability at left back trying to take on a man every time he gets it. Palacios hasn't played a successful pass in months, Keane lacks the intelligence and creativity he had before he left for Liverpool.. Pav can't play up front on his own, he needs some support as he's not gifted with pace, and doesn't fit in with a 4-5-1 so dunno what Redknapp's doing. Really think he needs to start rotating more in the premiership so the players can work together and stop taking the high-horse and not playing players that 'aren't his' (like Gio and Pav) often enough.

Oh well, I guess we can start calling it the Mickey Mouse Cup now that we're out of it, aye! Bring on the other competitions...

Sep 22, 2010 at 12:56 AM | Unregistered CommenterYoung Harold

Yeah, most wingers over Lennon right now but Arshavin has been awful so far this season. Don't let the 4 goals and 3 assists fool you, he's been dreadful and would be dropped if we didn't have so many injuries in midfield and up top (Cesc, Diaby, ramsey, RVP and Bendtner).
