Gallas, again

I'll get straight to the point (rather than cryptically dance around it to incite discussion).

Spurs fans are split down the middle on this one. You've got half of us saying he's a bad apple and the rest believing that he's exactly what we need (as far as his player qualities are concerned). But then there's debate about just how good he actually is and how far experience can carry him. Also spoken to some gooners today (who hasn't), who are in complete disagreement with the 'he's poison' line and others who suggest he will be rosey for the honeymoon period, then turn into an utter **** and end up isolating himself from the rest of the squad because of his demands and his conquering personality and lust for authority and control.

Wenger talking him up I see today also, not that I believe what he has to say without some scepticism, but he reckons Gallas alleged negative attitude is exaggerated.

Then I remember how he said he'd score an own goal for Chelsea to get away from the club and shrug despondently.

If we get Gallas the leader, barking orders and displaying composure at the back and intent going forward - then we'll be applauding the master-stroke of a free transfer. He will bring vast experience, a winning mentality, a **** mentality which we lack in abundance and the type of assurance at the back we need to allow us to sleep better at night (Dawson by the way, isn't suddenly shit because of one lacklustre England performance and his slow-mo no-go movements away to Young Boys - but there is that scratching of the head and chin when debating whether Daws only works best with a King by his side. I'm just not happy at this juncture to write off his form from last year as some type of fluke).

If we get some of the more repugnant traces of his (Gallas) personality, I hope poison is easier to rid from our system than a dodgy lasagne was.

Gallas is paradoxical. You can see that with the way we all appear to be in disagreement with each other.

So - there's only one thing to do. Back him in Lilywhite.

Until of course, it (if it) goes to shit. Then some of the vocal ones amongst you can say 'I told you so'.

He is a total dick and I hope he helps us get top 4 again.

Gallas gives a solid reliable option to defence, and on a 1yr contract it's worth a punt in my view. If he is crap and under performs he will get slated and he'll either up his game to prove himself or move on...it is a no brainer if were honest. Also to many who are on the fence, if you had 2 options only...1. Stick to pride and stay faithful to no ex arsenal carry on or 2. Take a realistic opportunity that may bring consistency and reward ie top 4 finish again and a good CL campaign....which would you take??

Thanks for your honesty Spooks.

*carry on as is

Aug 20, 2010 at 10:58 PM | Unregistered CommenterLennon7

There are rumours going around he is now the highest paid player at Spurs, which can't help team morale

Aug 20, 2010 at 10:59 PM | Unregistered Commenteranon

I hope that's bullshit.

Aug 20, 2010 at 11:00 PM | Unregistered CommenterOops

well if L'ARSE has the guts to take Sol-less Campbell, why not gamble on Gallas?

Aug 20, 2010 at 11:04 PM | Unregistered CommenterPav

The experience we need IMO. Good(not great) signing.

Aug 20, 2010 at 11:06 PM | Unregistered Commentermattyblamblam

One thing you can't associate Gallas with is LOYALTY. Since he has never screamed and cried he was a Chelsea nor AR5Ena1 loyalist, why bother with whom he has played for in the past? I say let us embrace what he brings to the table: never settle for less than perfection, play the game with total professionalism, and provides much needed experience in the area we are most vulnerable.

In 'Arry we trust.

let harry and the lads deal with the dressing room. As a spurs fan of course I hate arsenal, but i respect what they have done, and the team they sometimes are. i'm sorry I just want to see spurs win, I dont care how we get there, we can have bin larden up front if you like, as long as we play attractive football and push for trophys. Lets be honest we have done nothing for years till jol, then harry came along. how about a bit of faith in harry if not gallas, alot of fans are complaining that we haven't signed kaka and messi!!!!!!!! harry is trying to get the right people for little outlay without putting the club out of buisness. take a step back a deep breath and give this guy a chance he turned this deal down at asenal then took it from us. if he's got the guts to cross the devide I think he deserves to play before the fans get on his back, just because of where he used to play. Is booing a player that has just come to the club going to help gallas, the other players, ormore importantly spurs? In harry i trust, do you? coys

Aug 20, 2010 at 11:11 PM | Unregistered CommenterLet there be more

A top class defender on a free transfer and a one year contract ? Where is the risk ? He has solid champions league experience over a long period of time which is something Spurs are lacking. The expressions "gift horse" ,"don't kick" and "mouth" spring to mind.

Central defence is going to be a problem for Spurs, we are short in that position and 'arry has come up with a solution without spending a fortune. Gallas won't play every game but I think he'll prove to be invaluable.

I rather sign Tom!!

Aug 20, 2010 at 11:13 PM | Unregistered Commentersinger

I told you so

Aug 20, 2010 at 11:16 PM | Unregistered CommenterTrembly

I dont like Gallas but I expect him to be a success for us. Which will make it even sweeter.

Aug 20, 2010 at 11:16 PM | Unregistered Commenterilk

Trembly getting it in early.

Aug 20, 2010 at 11:17 PM | Unregistered CommenterKlaxons in the Wind

Tom IMHO is a bit of a luxury and spends too much time in A&E.

Aug 20, 2010 at 11:18 PM | Unregistered Commenterkeacher

So defence sorted, who is the other 2 players Harry has said will take us up to title challengers???? Been there done that type players he said?!....any ideas?

Aug 20, 2010 at 11:20 PM | Unregistered CommenterLennon7

The boy has got some bollocks, i'll give him that!

Aug 20, 2010 at 11:21 PM | Unregistered CommenterFaroespur

Oh, now we should back him up, eh?
What happened with that “Levy, Don’t Ever Think About It” bullshit? Was it worthwhile for you to entice venum towards Gallas from your brownnosers’ army who are slow and didn’t get the jest? Not one of your best ideas, I guess, so paddling backwards is in perfect order.

Aug 20, 2010 at 11:40 PM | Unregistered Commenterbeetleblues

Brownnosers, lol.

Yeah, I'm really fucking loved I am.

Aug 20, 2010 at 11:45 PM | Registered Commenterspooky

Top player, short-term deal. He wont be here enough to show disloyalty so who cares. He's just gona do a job for us

Arri knows best! At least for the moment........................ Onwards and upwards. Have Faith dear friends Arri has to get it right if hes to end up in the hall of fame!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You know thats what he wants

Aug 21, 2010 at 12:17 AM | Unregistered CommenterGodblessyouArri!

well you could say whatever you like about Gallas, but now he's here and now he's a part of Spurs. Let's back him up and we'll hopefully be awarded with a great experienced player who will be important to the team as the year goes on.

Aug 21, 2010 at 12:34 AM | Unregistered Commenterjesper

Back him if he's wearing our shirt. Boo one of our players? How short sighted and daft would that be? Evoking passionate hatred for everything Arsenal is our divine right and instinctive as it should be. But let's face it; the guy probably couldn't give a flying feck about the scum nor chavski.

He has pedigree and Harry knows better than any of us.

Sure, I worry about his temperament.

But boo one of OUR own players? WTF? Don't be daft.

We're on the up; let nothing distract us from that.

Super Spurs

@ Pav
Sol-less Campbell? well you can Hate Campbell all you want the Reality is HE WON TITLES at Arsenal and he was solid for us for a number of years.
Good luck with Gallas, I think he is a solid defender but he is no longer our problem.
HE is well known to be a cancer in every locker room hes been, those are just the facts.
Chelsea, Arsenal, and the French national team.
Regardless, wish you lot the best of luck..One less headaches to worry about this year.
Now only if we can get rid of Almunia before the window is close.

Aug 21, 2010 at 1:32 AM | Unregistered CommenterGoonerBostonUSA

I think that Arry well done for signing Gallas , Spurs will take benifit from this deal , hope that we are more strenghten squad... Finally pls bring Fabiano to WHL very soon ( After he said that he will help Spurs finish above Arsenal in the Leauge and win the title within two years ahead... ... But one thing I'm not sure that he can play for us in UCL as he already played for Sevilla in play off match. ???

Aug 21, 2010 at 2:50 AM | Unregistered CommenterSPURS THAILAND

No way of knowing how it's gonna end up but I say roll the dice and wish for the best. We need another defender and it doesn't seem like we have a ton of options in this current transfer market.

Aug 21, 2010 at 2:59 AM | Unregistered Commenternycyid

But one thing I'm not sure that he can play for us in UCL as he already played for Sevilla in play off match. ???

Assuming of course that this is even a relevant concern by this time next week :)

Aug 21, 2010 at 3:00 AM | Unregistered Commenternycyid

Everytime i think of him, I end up swallowing a little bit of my own puke !

Aug 21, 2010 at 3:01 AM | Unregistered CommenterDapadan

Look at it this way, we haven't signed Gallas from Ar5ena1 we have signed a free agent. Champs League experience and Premiership Champions experience. The guy also pops up with the odd important goal, which is a bonus from CB. At this moment in time, I don't really like the guy but hopefully my opinion will change. He plays for Spurs now so lets cheer for Spurs, not boo individuals because that will just have a negative impact on the team and we all need to be behind Spurs. BIOYC!

great player,free, LOVE IT

Aug 21, 2010 at 7:10 AM | Unregistered Commenterperrymann

I don't think we are split down the middle...it's more like 90% in favour and 10% can't differentiate their hatred for all things Arsenal from taking rational decisions in order to build our team.

Dawson and Bassong are both good players when playing with someone who organises them ie: King, but left to their own devices they tend to get found out when playing the better teams. They will develop, but in the meantime we need the experience of both King and Gallas to help them.

Gallas has a passion for winning and if he can bring that to the team we can make progress.

Aug 21, 2010 at 8:14 AM | Unregistered CommenterDaveK

I think it was a good move, and I hope I don't end up eating my words.
However I found in watching the interview with wenger, he looks suspiciously happy about this transfer news, and doesn't seem terribly surprised...I smell a mole indeed. Some sinister going on's methinks. Seriously though, he should add some strength in defense which we all know we need, and with the transfer window getting ever shorter, it was probably the best of a few potential options I figure.

Aug 21, 2010 at 8:15 AM | Unregistered CommenterBim Spur

While we can all sit there and be a little annoyed, unsure, unsettled or even feel a little sorry for ourselves, let's get right behind the team. We simply have to. We can blame whom we want to but I believe those people who say 'i told you so' will be the source if disruption at WHL - and then blame someone else! Those are the people that believe that we will fail this season, people wanting (or should that be waiting?) us to fail. If someone wears a shirt with our famous badge on it, you fncking back him!! Cmon yooou Spurs!

Aug 21, 2010 at 8:33 AM | Unregistered CommenterArry's Elbow

what Harry should have said was........

"I just love the French. They taste like chicken!"
.

Aug 21, 2010 at 8:35 AM | Unregistered CommenterBilliospur......

Billiospur...... Really??? The last one I tasted........tasted more like fish!

Aug 21, 2010 at 8:43 AM | Unregistered CommenterWisky Tom

Older posters may remember that Danny Blanchflower was labelled as a disruptive influence in the dressing room and a barrack-room lawyer when Bill Nicholson bought him from Aston Villa.

Turned out that he just wanted to win, in style, and could help others in the team to achieve that....and how.

I'm not saying that Gallas will have the same effect but it shows how widely-held views, propagated by the media, can be way off the mark.

Aug 21, 2010 at 10:37 AM | Unregistered CommenterDaveK

v true dave. I look back on players who were slated as troublemaking primadonnas, but in actual fact they were just very competative and outspoken. Hasselbank, DiCanio, Stoichkov....

Aug 21, 2010 at 10:57 AM | Unregistered CommenterChrisman

I think 99% of the fuss is just interweb message board waffle which fills the gaps between when any real news happens (which is practically never if you are talking about Spurs transfers this summer).

Most Spurs fans I know do not really care about Gallas and are more concerned with whether we win on wednesday and if the club will stump up the dosh to bring us a super striker before the window slams shut.

Aug 21, 2010 at 11:38 AM | Unregistered CommenterT

Arry's Elbow has it spot on!
I'm old enough to remember the Terry Neill disaster, tarnished me forever against accepting any shit from them. That said, I'll treat him as he'll treat us, as a piece of business. In 10 years time when Klinsmann and Ginola are still welcomed with love and respect at WHL, Gallas will never be seen. He won't be a THFC legend because he doesn't expect or indeed want to be one! I've got my head around that and although I don't like us having players who don't aspire to become a Spurs legend, I back the club first and foremost
COYS!!!!!!!!!

Aug 21, 2010 at 11:52 AM | Unregistered CommenterSleazey Wheezy

What's the fuss? I don't even like football.

Aug 21, 2010 at 12:54 PM | Unregistered CommenterPeter Sutcliffe

Look, the reality that fans never like to face is that despite whatever romantic notions we may cling to about this sort of thing, most players have no real loyalty to their teams. They are professionals who will go to wherever more money and a better opportunity is regardless of who it is.
We need Gallas. I'm not sure how it will turn out but what other options do we really have right now?

Aug 21, 2010 at 1:27 PM | Unregistered Commenternycyid

He's here for a year - not on some open-ended deal. If it works - another year. If it doesn't - thanks William, and close the door on your way out.
Harry's right. A no-brainer. Move on.

Aug 21, 2010 at 1:48 PM | Unregistered CommenterOldSpur

blimey ...without ledders and woody side by side we of course have a giant gap at the back in terms of experience.class, leadership and a bit of biff...nuffing to much wrong with daws and bassong except they aint ledders and woody..we is steppin up to be a top four side again this year and such is our progression that our defence is looking just a tad underdone for a regular top 4 team...so rather than bollock the players get behind harry and the team..god bless spurs

spurs thailand & nycyid

Here are the facts;

if a team playing in the qualifiers of the champions league fails to get into the group stages proper then any player from that team that transfers to another team that has qualified for the group stages IS eligible to play for his new team.

So if sevilla do not qualify fabiano CAN play for us in the champs league if we do. If neither qualify and he signs us he CANT play for us in the Europa league.
