How very Tottenhaming of us

I was in a restaurant in the middle of nowhere (might as well have been on the edge of the universe), with absolutely no type of mobile phone signal at all. 3G, Edge, cellular data of any type - Zilch. No texting, calling, no nothing. Couldn't possibly ask anyone else on the table (98% women) if I could borrow their non-o2 network phones just to er...check the...er...weather, as my cover as devoted partner to Mrs Spooky would have be blown (her birthday today). I gave up in the end, deciding the anticipation of tonight's result would drive me to much excitement when I browse into the BBC's footie page on arrival back home.

Ooh the disappointment. Akin to dressing up in a tuxedo for the prom only to find out at the end of the night that your sexy prom queen date has a penis tucked away Buffalo Bill style.

3-2 away night defeat to a supposedly mediocre (based on current domestic form I was told) side. I've not actually read the Beebs report - or any report, or browsed to any forum or spoken to a soul. The headline was all I had time for. Nervous Spurs, right? FFS. Not this shit again.

I'll hazard a guess and then you lot can write up your opinions below in the comments section for me to read over my morning bowl of cereal, as I have a crying baby daughter that is apparently far far far far more important than some tin-pot qualifying game (not my words, the missus).

"Spurs lost? Get the fuck out of here!"

So, my guesses:

1) We failed to turn up, getting all trembley in the knees by the significance of the occasion, failing to simply embrace and take hold of our own destiny, and instead preferring to hide in the corner, wetting ourselves. Young boys in Lilywhite.

2) Keystone Cops. Any episode.

3) Textbook Spurs, getting all the haters hating, do it the hard way because its the only way we know. Will end up stuffing them back in a glory glory night at the Lane.

I have a feeling it's an element of all of the above? I don't know, you tell me. And all this after looking every bit the CL team against Man City.

RIP, the dream is over, razor blades etc etc

What's that you say? Two away goals? Hmm...

I haven't read all the responses thus far but I feel I have to lend some balance to the arguement. Yes we quite poor in the opening 30 minutes or so, however I (without a even a hint of irony) to feel the surface has to take some blame. The number of times Sgt, Baler, Daws and others went to move with any speed, you could see them slip. I think this coupled with the blistering start made by the peadotraps put us on edge immediately.

Also have to say that Moddle doesn't yet look fit, Sgt Wilson really needs to learn how to keep a cool head and its clear that Thud has come of age. When he came on he actually looked like a seasoned pro and commanded the middle of the park (although against a team like Young Boys this ought to be expected). Second half I think the boys found there feet, or at least got the hang of using them on that surface, and it made all the difference. Pav was absolutely infuriating until his wonder strike with 10 to go......and what a strike! Well done to Keano also who looked good when he came on, dropping deep to unlock the middle/defence of YB.

So, lets not knee jerk, sure there will be plenty of piss taking anti spurs crap in the papers tomorrow - my advice, keep schtum until next Wednesday when I am completely convinced we will be able to be somewhat more smug.

Cheers and COYS

Remember our first venture in this competion all those years ago, a trip to dim distant Katowice. Same thing happened 4 - 0 down before we knew what hit us. Two goals in the second half gave us a lifeline for the second leg, the rest is history, the first of the glory glory nights. If we don't start giving so called inferior sides just a bit of respect instead of thinking we only have to turn up to win the game we are going to end up with copious amounts of egg on our face. Fear no team but respect them all.

i watched it live on telly, and believe me, the first 30 minutes were unbearable, totally reminiscent of last season's thrashing at Sunderland, only that now the stakes are higher. Let's just hope we could respond just like we did after defeat at Sunderland. COYS.

oh yes, it does look like Keane has earned himself a start - he actually looked lively and willing to get into positions. Defoe was just lost throughout.

Yes spooky, it's a case of you wetting yourself again before the season has kicked off properly.

Don't worry though, you're not the only one to let last season's top 4 'achievement' go to your head.

I am worried about Wilson. He is a mess. That back awful pass and his lack of position, stunningly horrible.
If its a bad phase, Sarge. It'd better be over.

It looked to me like Daws could have slid in to tackle their first and second goals, or at least would have tried if it wasn't for the pitch. Can you imagine sliding on that shit?

During the Carling Cup final a couple of years ago against Chesea I did a knee-slide across the carpet and burnt plastic into my knee from my tracksuit bottoms when Woody scored, not smart. It friggin hurt. That plastic pitch can't be far off, right?

3 thoughts from last nights game

1. We need a striker who can finish. The current lot are simply not good enough to bring us to the next level. If we want to stay in contention for a top 4 position and continue with the champions league.

2. The team selection was strange. Anyway the changes that were made gave us a chance and we need to finish the job next week. Too many poor performances to single out any individuals.

3. May I offer some perspective. Until last year, I only could watch four other teams in europes most premier club competition. This year I got to watch my team. Admittedly the first game went much worse than I had hoped for, but isn't this exciting? I did agree with a comment made by the commentary team that having slogged for 9 months for the right to enter this competition it seemed like such a waste to throw it all away with a bad game ( this was made after the first half hour).

I cannot say we will definitely win the second leg. If I were YOB, I will plan an effective rearguard strategy with swift counterattacks on the break or frustrate us with negative stifling play and grab one away goal. It's not that easy folks.

At least it is out of the way and we are still in the tie, for all our terribly shit display Spurs teams of old would have shipped 5 or 6 and the tie would be over, it isnt we have them back at our place now on a proper fcking pitch we should give them a good seeing to I reckon Harry will bullett them if they dont deliver.

Oh how we miss Ledleys calming influence, he will be back thank God.

Robbie needs to start. He should have started this game I was annoyed that Harry didnt pick him again, Defoe for me was crap again, he missed a sitter again should have scored when he isnt scoring he rbings nothing to the table and he hasnt been scoring for a while. Harry pick fcking Robbie next wendnesday was on the pitch 20 mins and as someone has pointed out he changed the game and set up a goal.

1st goal fluke be he took it well

2nd goal Daws fault, flat footed out of position burned for pace.

3rd goal was a mistake aswell back 4 should have pushed out togehter they didnt, one ball sliced us open and boom in it went.

Pav was awful, but he scored.

Hudd was class when he came on he should have started Harry got that wrong aswell.

BAE man Im not convinced good call to take him off I reckon.

Charlie suffers when lennon is not on the pitch.

Bale, ok

Gio, ok

Niko, ok

Gomes ah one of them days nothing he could do about 2 of the goals, 1 of them thought he went down to early striker gave hime the eyes I reckon, it happens.

Harry did wel he obviously ran amok at half time we expect no less.

I still think we will go through all set for an epic night next week, surely we cant fck it up its in our own hands.

IMO, it was the pitch that made our players look slow, indecisive and inaccurate in duels, tackling, passing and running the channels. They needed appropriate boots for this turf crap and I don’t know if they ever wore ones like this before, much less play a competitive game. YB sensed this and stormed from all directions and capitalized. If not for the turf, I simply don’t buy it that Daws is that much slower than their forward at the second goal. However, when Spurs somewhat got used to this turf-crap we turned tables on them. Harry is absolutely right in saying that these types of turfs need to be banned from CL.
I am not ready to call for the players overhaul as James did. These very players, or at least most of them, just 3 days before this game played a blinder against much much better team than the fucking YB. Anyway, I’m confident that next Wednesday we will send them home with their tails between their legs. If we get some quality additions to the team – fine. If not, we’ll offer and give bruising to anyone with the same team that finished forth last season. Today, we were simply caught with our guard down, but we got up and punched back. That’s what Spurs attitude is all about, and that’s why I love them.

Dawson has never been a good defender, he can header the ball that is true but his pace has been suspect from when we first bought the lad. It's something that we've all known, it was exposed so terribly tonight because of their counter attacking style, their passing game and that pitch. The pitch is the factor that made Dawson from a pretty good defender but slow to p1ss poor.

Pav whom i personally love, on too many occasions went for the shot instead of looking to Luka who was in a better position. It was as if he had a point to prove and to me that was highlighted by his celebration. with JDF's groin putting him on ice for 3 weeks I think we'll see some good combo's from Keane and Pav. Tis a pity about Luka though, when is Sandro coming over?

I want to ask a question. WHAT'S SO WRONG WITH ALAN HUTTON?
You can't tell me that he would do a worse job than Corluka? Alan plays good intelligent football with Aaron and I can't understand what happened. could you please fill me in.

BAE had a bad game but was excellent on Sat against Citeh who to me are stronger oponents so the pitch and environment has to be a factor.

The lads showed the Young Boys that it will be a different game next week. COYS

THIS is what happens when little clubs play or even play in qualifiers of real league, spurs r as well documented a tiny club with delusional fans, so even if spurs get lucky from last night humiliation and pass into ecl they will surely downgrade english club representation in champions league as they will get thrased by each and every club in group stage, still believe last season spurs finished 4th not bcoz they were good but liverpool underachieved.

First thought was they'd all eaten a dodgy fondue. How can a team who played so incredibly well 1st half Sat play so incredibly badly three days later.

Charitably, I put it down to a combination of nerves, the pitch and one of those days for Berne when they shoot - they score. But basically YBs are no more a good side than we've suddenly become a bad one.

Lennon will shred them to pieces next week. The keeper looks iffy. 1-0, 2-1 will do us fine. If we can't do that against this lot, then frankly, we don't deserve CL.

Aug 18, 2010 at 6:33 AM | Unregistered CommenterOldSpur

Not based on last nights performance alone, but we have too many players that are not champs league level. Surely we will finish the job next week, but unless we bring in at least 3 players in the 4-5 positions that we need more quality in, it really will be painful watching should we get through to the group stages. And that's not certain by any means, but at least we'll have our best 11 starting. I cannot see us bringing in 3 champions league quality players by the end of the month sadly at the moment??

Can anyone explain to me what Kaboul has done wrong (he ma be injured but in sure he isn't!) that we have to keep playing the 'milkfloat' Corluka!? All he does is go long or give the ball away and it's a combination of the 2 mainly.
Shocking night but THUDD to the rescue! The guy oozes class beyond his years and showed again why I believe he's our most important player, we needed ball players on that pitch not battlers, Wilsons passing is getting worse, I'd have preferred niko in the middle, hopefully Sandro will fill these boots eventually! Have faith yids!!

Fuck pouring over the performance and pitch etc I'm focused fully on next weds at WHL.

I agree on Lennon - things conspired against us to prevent him coming on. Confident bale and Lennon will do the bis at the lane and ledley must play to calm the defence.

As for the gooners coming on here; fair play we deserve the stick. No hiding place after last night. Disagree we'll get smashed in the groups if we get there. In recent seasons we have won at Leverkusen, besiktas and psv plus drawn with sevilla.

One last thing while your here; Tottenham Hotspur - 2 ars*nal - 1

The missus left the room when she saw the condition I was in during the first half hour. They came out viciously attacking from the start and our boys just weren't prepared for it. Could possibly be the butterflies in their stomachs getting the best of them, but still, there is no excuse for the way they started off the match. Redknapp was brilliant last night. He made great subs just when they were needed.

Aug 18, 2010 at 8:51 AM | Unregistered CommenterDan

BAE was no worse than any other in the back 4, but the game seemed to need wing backs rather than wingers, dropping Bale to left back made more space for him with Niko dragging the full back inside, the same was happening with gio on the right but Corluka is better behind a flying winger (Lennon) than one that cuts inside (gio or bentley) Hutton would have been much more suited to this set up (except i have reservations over his defending) Gio looked much brighter loose behind the front two in the first half, the second half he looked trapped out on the right as corluka looked to push inside as he does with lennon.

I think people are missing the important development last night though - Erik is a top top pundit, more please

Chin up all, grass for the second leg. And having now seen coverage of the game, considering how dogshit we were, to take 2 away goals from that game was of Harry Houdiniesque quality.

ok...can someone tell me why the fuck that incompetant clown Dawson is captain...this is not a knee jerk, I've said since day 1 that he is below par. It seems that no one else can bring themselves to admit it...many people on here blaming BAE and Corluka...did you not see Dawson do his best to give away a penalty at the end? His defending for the 2nd goal was beyond awful. Positioning was that of a 5 year old who had never played football before....also was marginally at fault for 1st goal...he keeps getting sucked towards the ball and leaving his man clear. It's alright when King is there to sort him out...... but sorry no. Pardon me for expecting a bit of leadership and organisation from our senior CB (compared to Bassong) and Captain!!! As a defender, he is thick.

Daswon could drop his pants and take a shit on Gomes' foot and people would say 'God Corluka is slow'.

The big leader in the team is clearly Hudd.

If we actually defended like decent human beings last night we would not have lost.

Wilson's passing is poor, and people please stop expecting it to miraculously get better overnight. Keane ran, shouted, and pointed a lot. Fair play to him, but this is no reason to start hailing him as the answer to all our problems. Pav looked like he wasn't really bothered which tells me he may be off. Dos Santos tried his ass off but he isn't a winger. Huddlestone, well, where would we be without him? Surely he needs to be our captain.

Rant over. That's not good enough from Dawson, and it's only Young Boys. And he got player of the year last season? Was Hudd and Gomes not on the ballot? This country.....

Very much played the 'Get Out of Jail Free' card last night but it was nice to see us have a slice of luck for a change rather than the normal dollop that falls on the mob up the road.

I do think the occasion got to the guys a bit last night but they battled well after the break - The YB side also played in a style exactly suited to the pitch, something you can only learn after a period of time (push it through the CB's & run like the clappers). The fact that they watered the pitch heavily before the game showed they knew exactly what they were doing but we should have been prepared for that - Maybe 4-5-1 would have been a better option.

Hopefully it's normal service resumed back at the Lane and back on real soil. On current form Sarn't Wilson will be struggling to get a look-in once Sandra arrives.

Credit to harry last night, I can't say the team selection was his fault as he would no doubt have played the exact same team that played city if he could but he didn't want to risk injuries on a joke of a pitch. But he changed it at 3-0 and it turned the game. Now can everyone see the value of hud?!?!? He completed dominated the midfield when he was introduced, I just hope he hasn't picked up any injuries from the game. Anyone who plays football knows how massively different playing on astro is to grass and their full back even said after the game they watered it to make it even more difficult for us. You could see the water on the surface when the ball hit the ground! Nonetheless we were sloppy, nervous and generally poor in the first 30 mins and we never reached full throttle at any point in the game. I thought Keane did well, worked well for the goal and his movement was good when he came on, never looked to much of a goal threat though and this is what we should be looking to bring to the squad before the window closes. I thought Bale did well at left back (much better than BAE) after the change. I fully expect us to school them at the lane though.

Lessons from last night!

1. If Gallas is available sign him up, we need CL quality and expirience and Bassong is not that, and Dawson cannot play without a senior CB partner!

2. Never play 442 in the CL it leaves the middle of the park far too exposed

3. We need a striker to hold up the ball in order to play 451

4. We either need to get Euider back or keep Keane at all costs.

5. Despite his goal Pav is a waste of space, and doesn't understand the word "team"

7. Tom Huddlestone needs to be the first name on the team sheet

Aug 18, 2010 at 10:48 AM | Unregistered CommenterDazzaTHFC

Everyone keeps going on about how bad Palacios was!

How the hell was he supposed to marshell 3 opp players by himself? it was 3 V 1 untill Huddlestone came on and Defoe/Pav dropped back into midfield,

Palacios was exposed by our woefull tactics, every team play 451 in the CL and Harry needs to learn this, even last seasons victorys over Arse, Chelsea and Man City were achieved playing an adapted 451 - think about it!!

You're right Spooks, a combination of the 3, but that poxy pitch didn't help. There's no way on God's Earth that all their players are quicker than ours in getting to the ball. Well, I guess we were lucky last night to get it back to 3-2. In the "bad old days" it could have easily stayed 3-0 or even been 4 or 5. Lets just hope they struggle as much on our pitch as we did on theirs. No knee jerking required.

In other news, it looks as though the legend that is/was Mauricio Taricco is making a comeback at my local team - Brighton and Hove Albion. We resigned fecking Chimbonda, why not the big MT as well? He could provide some bite at the back....

Why do people knee jerk based on the last performance? Dawson was immense last season. So one bad game this season, 2 games into the season and you wanna hang him out to dry? Fuck off please mate. Let's not get stupid here. It was a poor performance, players rattled across the pitch. If it was mental strength impacting confidence then Harry has a job to do. Quote from todays guardian, seems some things will never change:-

.........When Bill Nicholson's fabled Double winners made Tottenham's only previous foray into the European Cup, way back in the 1961-62 season, they shipped four goals in their opening tie to Gornik in Poland before clawing back to 4-2. In the return leg in north London, they romped home after an 8-1 win...........

I'll expect a slagging from doh as well but chrisman ain't too far off the mark when it comes to Dawson. There I've said it please anyone who does not agree with me slag me off insult me call me a moron or whatever because that's what you do when someone disagrees with you isn't it.

Fuck sake. As dazza said king was recalled for the games that mattered. It's not totally that Dawson's mess is always cleared up by king it's partly that Dawson actually plays better when king is beside him.

So doh call me a moron if you want because I dare to go against convention and suggest Michael Dawson is anything other than God himself. As chrisman says if you keep saying something over and over again it is not knee jerking. Furthermore we are all entitled to our opinions on here so if you don't agree with one fair enough. It doesn't make that persons opinion any more right it wrong though and to say ".........the type of fan we don't need" is ridiculous. Grow up.

About last night........

Thud is so good and a key player. Wilson needs a rest for a while. Luka thud in middle bale Lennon midfield.

Harry had the balls to change things and bring on thud he has been critisised for being too slow to change things. But tonight he wasn't and it's because some of the lads that didn't start had to come on. They complained during training about the pitch being too firm and their joints hurting. If we had the full preferred 1st eleven out we'd have won one or two nil.

I thought we had a synthetic pitch at the training ground. That synthetic pitch actually feels like grass but the bed is really stiff like fucking concrete. Hence Lennon etc complaining about their joints hurting. That's what Harry said.

We need a clinical striker. We don't have one. Simple bit of business required there. If Lennon is playin Charlie plays well behind him. If Lennon Isnt then walker or kaboul had better on instead.

Well done Harry (I don't know what u said at ht but it worked) and the lads. Never have I celebrated a 3-2 defeat like this. And thanks pav too. You were shit most of the night but that was a top class finish.

Aug 18, 2010 at 1:06 PM | Unregistered CommenterYiddenAgenda

I think defensively we got it wrong in the first half by playing to high up the field and staying close to their forwards.
Normally Dawson and Co sit a bit deeper and give themselves a few yards start on the runner, something which was absent in the first 30 mins.
Young Boys spotted this early on and made us pay by simply sliding balls through on a VERY quick surface.

As someone already said, Dawson would have slid into challenges on a grass pitch, but fear of friction burns put him off (and who can blame him) - note that there were very few, if any, sliding challenges from either side.
Wilson is another player who tends to slide in to win the ball, but didn't do it last night.

Harry was right - we feared the playing surface more than we feared the opposition.

Changes were made at half-time, we played deeper and kept distance between our defenders and their strikers, limiting them playing through balls.
Tommy Boy made ALL the difference when he came on, adding bite and authority to the centre of the pitch. He just looked calm and composed throughout.

I did sit there after 30 mins, thinking that those 38 games of hard work last season were blown away so quickly.
Fortunately we had the guts to fight back and give ourselves a bit of hope.
Granted, they had golden opportunities to completely end the tie, but they will hopefully live to regret it.

I note that the Daily Mail don't rate our chances. Why? Oh, because last year, only one team over-turned a first leg defecit in the play-offs. What they failed to mention is, out of the 10 first-leg ties, 7 were won by the AWAY side, 2 by the home and 1 was a draw. Surely, if you win away in the first leg, you'd expect to go through anyway.

Lastly - no point in us pursuing Suarez as he played for Ajax in their qualifier yesterday, meaning he's cup tied.
If we want to buy a striker, we effectively have to look for someone who's not in a team which is in either the CL or the Europa League.

Aug 18, 2010 at 1:24 PM | Unregistered CommenterWalkerboy

Bottom line we didn't turn up for 40 minutes...blame the pitch...blame the tactics...blame the players... It was a clusterfuck.

So it's all about next Tuesday. Turn up, show some pride and some swagger, play like we did against Man City and we should be ok.

I fully expect them to turn up looking to shut us out for 90mins. So lets get stuck in and avoid any repeat of the Wolves and Stoke games last season.

...or whose team will not be playing until the group stages proper.

Being a stubborn git myself, while I completely disagree with the Dawson bashers, to be fair, some of them have been very consistent in their doubts about him. But we are seeing some distressing knee jerking as well. Cliche alert--a good player doesn't become a bad player overnight. And with the exception of Huddlestone, everyone, even Gomez, screwed up at various points during the match. So individual scapegoating seems moot, especially since the two players who were conspicuously poor, Pavs for flopping at every opportunity (cut it out, you're better than that) and Bassong (who did look like he had no preseason at all) were the one's ultimately saved our collective bacon with the goals.

I told a colleague last week that I thought this match had banana skin written all over it. "Easiest tie in the draw" just encourages underestimating the opponent. They took out Fenerbache and they have an artificial pitch. We knew that, but apparently didn't prepare for it. Arrogant and careless. Very lucky we have a second chance next week.

When King and Huddlestone are absent, we cannot defend to save our lives. This is a fact.

And saying 'Dawson was immense last season' doesn't actually make it true. King was immense. Gomes was immense, Huddlestone was immense. Dawson was pretty good, from February onwards, and was lucky enough to be playing in the midst of other great performers. Without King and Huddlestone to marshall the defence, no one knows what they are doing, a daming indictment of Dawsons ability. Remember Leeds at home last year? To be a top CB you have to be able to organise a defence. The positioning of the whole back 4 was totally off-cock until Hudd came on. But it seems in the eyes of many Dawson can do no wrong. If BAE or Corluka has made those errors they would be lynched.

And as for Dawson being scared of sliding into tackles, please, do me a favour. That is the worst excuse I've ever heard, and it didn't stop him from flying into a tackle in our own area with 10 mins to go, seemingly dead set on giving away a penalty.

Wilson showed that even as a shield to the back 4, he is not as good as Hudd. He plays in a fairly brainless way. Yeah he can charge about, but what we saw was the value of Hudd's old fashioned, stand still, use your brain reading of a game. You dont need to hare about at 100mph all the time if you're in the right position in the first place. You don't need to spend half the time sliding around on your arse if you can read the game well enough.

All you Huddlestone moaners out there, I hope you were watching, different class the hud was, pulled us out of a downward spiral.

When done Huddlestone, as for the rest

Gomes not at fault
Charlie poor
Dawson clumsy, very poor
Bassong poor would have been very poor if not for the goal
Ekotto WTF
Bale you are human then, poor
Modric OK
Palcious fish out of water
Dos Santos average
Defoe average
Pav very poor would have been WTF if not for the goal

Subs
Keane average
Krancjer poor

Play like that again and it will be the last game in the champions league for this year.

This reminds me of your "Palacios should play on the right wing" comment a few weeks back Chrisman. God knows why Spooky lets you guest blog on here. Absolutely Clueless.
