Stats, scores and away form

Some stats I've plucked out of the Glory Glory forum from the past week with a little added commentary. Light reading.

Spurs and Arsenal comparison of positions

(2009 and 2010 seasons) after 37 games (With thanks to spurredjon):

2008/9

Arse P36 W19 D11 L6  F64 A36 GD +28  PTS 68

Tottenham Hotspur P36 W13 D9 L14  F42 A41 GD +1  PTS 48

20 points behind Arsenal.

2009/10

Arse P37 W22 D6 L9  F79 A41 GD +38  PTS 72

Tottenham Hotspur P37 W20 D7 L9  F65 A37 GD +28 PTS 70

2 points behind a supposedly 'improved' Arsenal side. And let's not mention the last time we finished above Liverpool because most of us were not even born when it happened. It's been a season of progression, and it's in the numbers.

End of season form

I love looking at this. Storming end of season, and to think the month of April was meant to destroy us.

W 0 -3  Wigan Athletic
W 2 -1  Everton
W 3-1  Blackburn
W 2-1 Stoke City
W 2-0 Portsmouth
L 3-1 Sunderland
W 2-1 Arsenal
W 2-1 Chelsea
L 3-1 Man Utd
W 1-0 Bolton
W 1-0 Man City

Poor performance up at Sunderland, but how often can you say that about us this season? Not a single draw in that list. Inconsistency? Bah! I laugh in your face.

Home Performance

14 won. 2 drawn. 3 losses. 40 scored. 12 conceded. That is just superb. And when you look at the three defeats, the fabled IF Fairy waves her magic wand and shows you what could have been. We've been here before with solid home form, and it's now vital we retain this.

Away Performance

Played:18
Won:7
Drawn:5
Lost:6
Scored:25
Against:25

Won
Hull 5-1 - Sexy
West Ham 2-1 - Dug deep, showed class
Portsmouth 2-1 - Good solid three points
Blackburn 2-0 - Same again
Stoke 2-1 - Showed our class
Wigan 3-0 - Easy
Man City 1-0 - Epic

Draw
Villa 1-1 - Battered them
Everton 2-2 - Should have won it, gave it away
Brum 1-1 - Last minute equaliser from the Brums
Fulham 0-0 - Probably lucky to get a point here, no complaints
Bolton 2-2 - Our record there isn't exactly great

Lost
Liverpool 0-2 - Defoe goal disallowed. We then sort of went a bit limp, frustrating
Man Utd 1-3 - Textbook result for us at OT. One of these days...
Chelsea 0-3 - Did we get a little screwed before collapsing to defeat?
Arsenal 0-3 - Three key players out, gutless and clumsy performance, gave them the three points on a plate
Sunderland 1-3 - Didn't turn up and let Bent tweet his way to redemption, although LOL at the two pen saves from Gomes
Wolves 0-1 - Awful

Had we won 3 of the games we managed to draw...if if if, eh? See how much of a thin line sits between us and 3rd place, even 2nd - based on this season alone? If we improve in the summer, then our success in what we compete for next year (4th, 3rd?) will also be dependent on what the teams above us and the teams below us do in the transfer market. One thing is for certain, we are finally turning potential into results. And we'll continue to improve. How can we not?

There's a certain unwanted quirk we need to get rid of, the type of performance seen at Sunderland and Wolves (we gave the latter 6 points this season...think about it). Ever so slight improvement away and we'll consolidate a top 4 place again next year - as long as WHL remains the fortress it is.

Regardless of us sometimes 'not turning up', when it mattered most. We did when it mattered most. City away. And as mentioned in earlier blogs, the two London derby games against the red and blue scum.

That's what won the day.

good analysis,
hopefully it continues,
iv said for years we need to keep a core team and manager, and finally it looks like both will be done!

Away form is more than decent. We throw away several points and I think next season the likes of Villa and City will find it harder, far harder to keep up with this. Not gloating, just think we are ahead of our rivals at the moment in terms of quality. Then again, I should wait until after the WC and the summer to see who City sign.

Hmm i see we lost to some real crap teams... Next season we murder wolves and stoke then we will be fighting for the title lol... Also we are a cup team so champions league will be no problem haha

Looks like he's telling a racist joke.

Our home form is brilliant. We've got such a great defence which is amazing when you consider Woodgate hasn't played, King makes cameos and we've had Kaboul at right back.

does that mean as a spurs fan i have to be outraged at bale, like we apparently all were at eidur?

It just shows how marginal it is at the top. A bit of luck here and there, Boaz Myhill a bit sleepy, as you say it could have been 3rd or 2nd. Which again is testament to what a brilliant season it's been. Interesting how our defensive record is better than the Arse, but our goal scoring is not as good. We've been wasteful in front of goal a little too often. This is one of the very few areas needing reinforcement. As someone else said a while ago, just imagine if we had a Torres up front.

Dzeko has been rumoured to go everywhere, so no doubt soon spurs will be linked, but he could be a good striker to have.

by the way, my mum's friends sisters new boyfriends daughters hair dresser also cuts dzeko's poodle's hair and he said he is defo signing for us!
may as well start the rumour!

May 7, 2010 at 12:06 PM | Unregistered Commenterdavid_m

I remember from right back at the start of the season something Harry talked about that if you want to succeed you should copy success. Like Barcelona for whom playing the beautiful game also involves working like mad when out of possession and Man Utd who BELIEVE in themselves and focus on what to do to win without distraction.
.
Those stats of our results and watching our performances over the season say to me that we have kept those goals in mind. We have played some beautiful one touch football this year but also even our flair players have shown a desire to close down opponents and work for the win. We have also shown mental strength in winning 9 of those last 11 crunch games and recovering from the Wembley disappointment to win games nobody believed we could.

Of course we are nowhere near Man Utd and Barcelona at present by practically any measure you care to mention. But when you are trying to build it is important to have the right goals. If you want to get from A to B you the first rule is to make sure of is that you are facing in the right direction. Lets hope these first baby steps we have taken can be further built upon next season and in the years ahead.

We need to be better at unlocking defences when they park the bus, especially next season when most teams will be looking to do this at the lane. Buck stops with the Forwards as their movement and ability to create a chance out of nothing is what wins games like this. Don't think we have that so is one area that needs to improve. Also, while Thudd has done pretty well this season, 1 assist and 1 league goal (correct me if Im wrong) is no way near good enough from a player most Spurs fans like to label "The best passer" or someone who "has an amazing shot on him!"

May 7, 2010 at 12:30 PM | Unregistered CommenterOssie

To be fair we got the luck in some games and took the 3 points. 2 home games in particular stick in the mind Sunderland when they deserved at least a draw and dare I say it Arsenal when we rode our luck for long periods.

Without doubt there has been massive improvement and with one of the youngest squads in the premier league we will improve as long as our top players are not poached by others.

I would also ask all genuine Spurs fans to support all the players they have proven they deserve it, at times this season and last the negative comments unfairly thrown at some players went way beyond fair. The likes of boetang, bent, keane, bale, jenas, bentley, gomes have all been slated, its the managers job to get the best out of the players, Harry despite his doubters has proven he is the man for this job get behind him, get behind the team and just maybe we can sustain and build on the success of this season, after all as fans thats your role.

May 7, 2010 at 12:39 PM | Unregistered CommenterRob J

Ossie, football's not just about scoring goals and getting assists. It's also about retaining possession and keeping the ball moving. I remember Carrick getting grief for not scoring enough but he was never that kind of player. He did however hold our midfield together, acting as a pivot between defence and the forwards. When he left for Utd £19m seemed like good business but we fell apart. Now we have Hudd in the same role and, lo and behold, we're looking the business again. He has been a constant in a very good season and I don't believe in coincidences. Obviously there are always better players out there but at the moment he's the best option we have (now ahead of Wilson in the pecking order) and will hopefully improve with experience.

'If you want to get from A to B you the first rule is to make sure of is that you are facing in the right direction'
Ted spot on the genius is in the simplicity, kinda what BAE was getting at in his now famous interview when comparing our 'Arry's methods to those Jol and Ramos.

Also standby for the mother of all ITK invasions. Eto'o you don't look so smug now, just passing on what I heard, don't shoot the messanger.

May 7, 2010 at 1:02 PM | Unregistered CommenterDay of the Triffics pt.2

Before we get carried away with consolidating fourth, there's - hopefully - the small matter of the champions league to work into the equation.

We've not had European football this year, so we'll be playing a lot more games next year, and imagine how the motivation changes when mid-week your at the san siro, then come sunday your away at blackburn. Could we cope if we have a similar injury situation to this year?

Yes we should improve our squad, but if we take the champions league seriously - and I don;t think any fan would be happy if we didn't - then getting into the top four again will be a MASSIVE achievement.

May 7, 2010 at 1:25 PM | Unregistered Commenteryid

Bale has just signed a new 4-year contract and the Telegraph is reporting that Modric is determined to stay at Spurs for a tilt at the CL. Happy days at the Lane!

Whatever happens Sunday, it's been a great season, so Spooky thanks for a great year of blogging.

We're playing away though, so the home defensive record wont change.

D'oh for me!

May 9, 2010 at 12:45 PM | Unregistered CommenterWinterWeekend61

I thought you meant 'there is' might....which confused me.... not their (record) might! here's hoping.....would be another feather in our cap anyway. Now if only Fulham would do us a nice little favour it will be the icing on the cake.

May 9, 2010 at 12:47 PM | Unregistered CommenterWinterWeekend61

Definately.......COYF(come on you Fulham)
