Here we go again

So, Modric. 4 years left on a 6 year contract. He'll cost Man Utd big. Let's say £40M non-inclusive of any additional payments made to charity and a fair price if you consider his age compared to Berbatov when he was sold to United and the fact Levy will do his utmost to drive the cost of the transfer up a few more million just before deadline day.

Add another £25M into the mix for Gareth Bale, again to the super-rich Man Utd. Keep on waving those green and gold scarves. And then there's the unquestionable £35M+ for Lennon to Man City and it's happy days down at the Lane. We could also try flogging Dawson to Liverpool, on the cheap, for let's say £16M. Because they're also well minted.

Have I missed anyone out? Oh yeah, Keane to Wolves, £500K. That should give us plenty for the war chest.

Here's hoping Daniel mentions Messi in his programme notes this weekend.

The "mega-rich" United courting all the Spurs players.

Last week was because we were playing them and this week it's just the Sun being their usual selves and reporting a story late. Although, reporting a story that's a year old has gotta be a record even for that disgrace of a newspaper (and I use the term "news" lightly).

Let's face it, until I hear Modric or Bale or Lennon or Jenas(sic) come out and say they want to leave or even United come out and say they can afford any of our better players I'll take all this with a pinch of salt.

3 games that could transform the club and would arguably put an end to a lot of this talk because most players would stay anyway. Let's concentrate on those and not let the journalists ruin our season.

It is the same for every club in every paper.
Lazy journos with a bag of every half decent player and a second bag with a list of half decent clubs in it, pull a ball out of each bag and Moddle to Man Utd, Rooney to Real, David James to West Brom...

They have to put something in the papers, how many times does the Jose loves Jenas one get trotted out.

Pointless speculating on it until there are deals being done, and you know what, we won't have any say or influence in it at all anyway ;-)

Apr 29, 2010 at 12:17 PM | Unregistered CommenterSpursSimon

They just can't help themselves. The thing is, they print these stories much like they did with Berbatov and when Utd wanted Berbatov, Fergie and his players started to speak about him in the press, indirectly tapping him up meaning the made up stories carried new weight. It's just the way it goes.

Finish 4th and we'll be a real threat. None of our players will want to move on.

Why oh Why must we put up with this shit every year and always old red nose picks on us he takes our best players every year dont think the modric story has any legs tho, Harry wouldnt sell him in a million years and I hope Levy has learnt his lesson from previous years, start selling the family silver and it takes a long time to be able to get it back, if we sell him it will just be admitting we never want to be a big club DONT SELL IF HE WANTS A MIDFIELD PLAYER JENAS/BENTLEYhe can have them and we can have carrick in return please

Paper talk, and as usual the tabloids are missing the real story.... Man Ure don't have a transfer fund, they will sell players again this summer to feed the Glazer's need for cash to pay their loans.

Apr 29, 2010 at 12:26 PM | Unregistered CommenterYorkSpur

Again the media trying to unsettle our players as we approach the biggest game of our season. To make it worse it always seem s to be the paper that our manager writes for!

I agree. Utd are broke. All this is for the benefit of those who wave the green gold scarfs.

Red face can c*ck off, United can c*ck off and every other club who thinks they can persuade our gems to leave can also c*ck off. We have the best squad in the league bar maybe ch*lsea. We can field 2 teams on any occasion and have fantastic strength and depth in both teams. Once we beat Bolton, draw / win against Citeh and get something out of Burnley all this talk of breaking up the squad will be gone... hopefull for the long term. Having seen the atmosphere in the last few games (Scum was the best league game atmos in the last 20 years) why would anyone want to leave anyway?! The fans this season have been utterly immesne both home and away, testament to us I reckon and HR for manager of the year easy if we hit 4th.

Just a little ode to Daniel Levy - I think he has done a truly outstanding job and deserves a lot more recognition that he currently sees. He has guided our club through some tough times over the last few years and I have never been so proud to say i am a Spurs fan. Thanks Danny boy, keep it up me old mucha.

yeah i'm not sure how a club thats £700m (?) in debt could afford the £25m+ it would cost to sign modric. the difference with berbatov was he'd pretty much already said he wanted to leave so it was just a case of how much could we get. i think modric wants to be part of the big future at whl. i really don't see modric, defoe, dawson or bale going anywhere.

Apr 29, 2010 at 12:42 PM | Unregistered Commenterbalders77

Expect more of this in the summer. Only way to put a stop to it is to finish 4th. Then it will be role reversal.

Apr 29, 2010 at 12:45 PM | Unregistered CommenterOracle

After the £30M spent on Berbatov I doubt very much United will come in for another one of our players.

Apr 29, 2010 at 1:09 PM | Unregistered CommenterGrim down south

only way to put a stop to the rumours is 2 finish in the top spot in the premier league or consistently being in the champ league...the we can do it to other clubs ha ha ha ha....coys

So.. the paperes are trying to unsettle our players again. As it has already been said on this blog.. win our next 3 games and it doesn't matter, no-one worth keeping is going anywhere. All this idle speculation only benefits citeh for if we don't make Champs league (due to players heads being turned- again!) citeh surely will.. and if manure cheatski the scum or the bindippers don't see this as a real threat, they are fools. Citehs billions and a Champs league spot = everyones fucked.
So what I think I just said is ....un settle the players, citeh 4th, sell everyone, citeh buy the world and in a couple of years its back to one horse races for the title. On a positive note, red nose will retire never surpassing liverpools 18 titles, wenger gets sacked for winning fuck-all for the 6th season in a row, abramavich clears out of cheatski leading to receivership and relegation and liverpool are still shit.
Or... the mighty Spurs win their last three games and we all yell FUCK YOU to the papers, to manure and everybody else.
Bring on the Champions League
To fucking dare is to fucking do (spooky 2010)

I think it's pretty safe to say that if any club comes in with an offer for one of our unsellable players (as in, a player of their quality would be ridiculously expensive or unwilling to move to anyone other than the big 3) that Daniel Levy has the savvy to make sure the money is more than adequate compensation. There aren't many players out there that would be worth buying. I read that West Ham want to trade Upson for O'Hara this morning, the only way I can see that happening is if Woodgate and King retire, and even then there are better alternatives out there. Ideally we'd sell good but not good enough players for healthy fees such as Hutton, Keane and Bentley, to teams that want proven premier league players. Just getting their wages of the books would save the club 10m a season. Then we can look at just bringing in good cover. I hear that Naughton, O'Hara and Obika aren't too shabby ;)

Apr 29, 2010 at 1:40 PM | Unregistered Commenterjimjam

Fergies at it again, same ol' same as. First leak to paper to test the water, then ask player via the press. Agent will see pound signs and nag away at his client, Utd will offer derisory sum, Levy declines offer. Player sulks and demand move, Spurs wait three to four years to find adequate replacement. We must remember at all times that Levy's hands are tied, and can only get the best deal for Spurs when all's said and done. Let's hope the player/s have a little more about them, but I hoped that Keane,Berbatov and Carrick did...how wrong can you be?. Surely the FA must put into place a system whereby ANY team can only spend what they have, i.e. in debt however 'manageable' means your expenditure must be curtailed accordingly, as the obligation must be to those who are owed first and foremost. Secondly Levy if pressurised must get a cash only deal, not a long term protracted one, making sure we have both the funds and time to find a suitable replacement, unlike the last debacle!

Slap on a crazy escape clause price on the contracts of our players who other teams are going to sniff around.
That will put potential buyers off.

Apr 29, 2010 at 2:19 PM | Unregistered CommenterRick

At least we had the foresight to get him on a 6 year deal. that takes the pressure off.

The problem with Berba & Carrick (and possibly Bale too if we do not nail him down) is that they had 2 years left on their contract.

Berba was 27, was at his peak. He asked to leave after his first season (Jol said yes, the Board disagreed), he got a pay rise and barely turned up for the first dozen games. The following summer, after Utds tapping up the previous year, Berab was determined to go and if we had kept him, he would not have been the same player and the following year, 1 year older, and with 1 year on his contract, he would have gone for far less money and would not sign a new deal. As painful as it was, given Berba's attitude, we did well.

Carrick's contract position was similar, so again if we declined he could have gone a year later for a lot less. His attitude was way better and we put up less of a fight, for some reason.

With 4 years left on his contract and still young, we can afford to play tough with Modric...but really we should be offering him a new deal...if not longer then at least more dollar!

My worry is about Bale. He has 2 years left. Lets hope and pray he agrees a new deal. Maybe he waits until we get 4th....or maybe he is just happy to be at Spurs. He seems to be, but no dout he is ambitious. Regardless of his contract, Bale is the sort of quality that any big name will come in for - Real, AC, Barca etc It might be hard to stop him going if a mega offer was tabled by one of Europes biggest.....He needs a massive new deal put in fromt of him now to nip all speculation in the bud.

But like someone above said, win the next 2 games and hopefully all these players will be delighted to stay at Spurs.

Apr 29, 2010 at 3:24 PM | Unregistered CommenterOllie

"We're looking to build a team here. We wouldn't be looking to sell players [like him]. He's the future of the football club"
Redknapp on Bale. I'd say Modric comes into that category too.

Finish fourth and no one will need to leave to persue their CL dreams. But speaking of the boys we did sell:

Berbatov, £30m? done deal. What a load of shit he's looked at United compared to his pomp at WHL.
Carrick, £18m? Done deal! Though Zakora was a woefully inadequate replacement, that was a massive return on investment for us. It took us a long time to recover from selling Carrick. too long.
Keane, £20m? Fuck me, you can have him NOW for a quid.

I'd be gutted if Modric were to leave, but as above, it would take a massive amount of money to prize him from our clutches. Although we have sold top players, it's never been on the cheap, and Levy would fight tooth and nail to keep him.
or hold out for £40m and a reacharound.

Apr 29, 2010 at 5:14 PM | Unregistered CommenterMatty K

why would modric leave if he has his two brothers at the club with him.

Ther is only one way to stop this sue the Sun for printing lies about a player under contract if i said the mirror was going to buy the Sun i would be sued for causing the shares to rise on a rumor . So why is Levey allowing this to happen what if Spurs Fans said right i won renew my Season Tickets if we are selling our best players because the value of entertainment has dropped i bet you any Money Levey would act. This is a major problem for one very good reason can we trust Moderic who missed a sitter and Bale who had is worse game in weeks with our most important run in for years the reason i ask is this Spurs would dmand mega Money for these two if we made fourth. The last time we had players tapped Carrick he was the first player to come of and leave us beaten then he went to Utd them Berbatov wouldn't play and sulked is way to Spurs finishing in eight and Fulham flyers 7th. I think we cant trust them till we make fourth and hope they then want to stay. I think they are great but are now damaged goods so Townsed and Bostock or Parrett should be drafted in and if they don't Commit to a longer better contract bench them lets hope they are and shine .COYS

This is a good forum and always worth a read. why does no one ever talk about why and how Man U got in to this financial trouble.
Correct me if I'm wrong, or if any one has got a better ideas, but it all started with Fergie screwing his former bosses over, for the stud rights to a race horse.
In the end they sold their shares to the yanks to get their own back, this putting Utd into massive debt.
And why did they want a soccer club, Utd fans? I don't think so. Any thing to do with gaming rights and Blair and his super casinos.
I bet the americans didn't bet on Brown also screwing them over. In the Man u fans, there's only one person to blame for your financal situation, and that's o'red nose.

You see guys we are entering into the most important period of the teams history. We need to get out of this endless loop of developing players and selling them on to United. Those who think United are broke, maybe but we have City to deal with nxt year and there will be others!!

The impoetance of the next 3 games cant be understated. Its life changing, its a step change, its another universe!!

I can be told to get a life with me hammering away at Harry and his team selection. But the price we pay for not getting into the top 4 is HUGE!!!!!!!!!!

Call me intense, obsessed and the rest, but i tell you, Wolves, Hull, Stoke may cost us big time!!!!!

Will we be in the race next year????

Im no pesemist, but am concerned - yes i am!! United, City, Liverpool, etc will come knocking, dont worry about that!!

We need the step change and we need it NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THIS SEASON!!!!!!!!!!!!
