Wilson's yellow card conundrum

I do love Wilson Palacios. If you happened to tape last nights FA cup action, watch the game from around the 88th minute. And keep an eye on our Honduran Panther as he goes on a quest to pick up a yellow card. It's hilarious, diving in, taking down players yet every time doing enough to warrant all the effort perfectly legal - be it ugly and untidy. One rash attempt when he seemed to lunge towards the ball had him cleanly win it obviously by mistake. Bless. Perhaps a naughty tap of the oppositions back-heel with his boot or a tug of a shirt would have resulted in a quick-fire yellow. The fact he tried so hard so late in the game was borderline silly, as he could have quite easily risked a red. I mean, how do you go about getting a yellow card by tackling someone badly? It's not a bright idea.

So, what does this mean now with regards to the up and coming matches?

If he gets booked on Saturday he misses Sunderland away and the FA Cup semi-final. But he'll be back to face Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United. So perhaps he can play on Saturday, try not to get booked (which probably means he will get booked) and then rest him against Sunderland to then be eligible to play in the semi-final. Although Sunderland away is not going to be an easy day out, so perhaps we should just play him in every game and let the Gods decide.

Apparently if he reaches April 11th (semi-final day) without having picked up another yellow card, then my understanding is the cards get wiped (or he needs a further 2 to get a suspension - I think). In fact, if anyone knows or can confirm - let me know and I'll update this article accordingly.

Anyways, well worth checking out his attempts to foul the opposition.

Big Willy style.

"If a Player accumulates ten recorded cautions in FTCM (First Team Competitive Matches) between the opening day of the Playing Season and the second Sunday of April in the same Season, he will be suspended automatically for a period covering:- Two First Team matches"
I think this is inclusive so he will have to behave during the Semi-final too. I agree though. Let him play and deal with whatever comes up. He's been on 9 yellows now for a while.

Was cursing him for the Fulham goal, leaving too much space in the middle and generally misplacing passes, but have forgiven after finding out he played with a groin tear. Well hard and committed to the cause.

Mar 25, 2010 at 4:27 PM | Unregistered CommenterHOT SPURS

He should have just taken his shirt off before the final whistle - that's an automatic yellow isn't it?

Mar 25, 2010 at 4:27 PM | Unregistered Commenterslojo

I agree play every game as normal & make make it through to the end without letting it affect your normal game WP. COYS

Mar 25, 2010 at 4:28 PM | Unregistered CommenterBOBBY BOY

haha - I did think I was the only one to notice, hadn't spotted anyone else talking about it
I told my boy late on he better get a hurry up and aminute later you could just see him thinking ' that's almost a winnable ball, i'll just go in a bit late' fucking priceless, I thought he was gonna get a red too at that point, that would have been typical.
I tell you what aswell, Spurs players not match fit playing out of position and still getting the job done? Arry's a fuckin saint (not that kind either)

Mar 25, 2010 at 4:32 PM | Unregistered CommenterWinterWeekend61

You are right about April 11th. I don't know if you read what Redknapp said about Palacios. Apparently he got a slight groin muscle tear on tuesday and was recommended by doctors not to play. Palacios went on pitch at 3pm and he said I feel fine and want to play! Redknapp said ok.

Here is a perfect opportunity. Get him booked v Pompey. We can cope up at Sunderland without him. We can also beat Pompey at Wembley without him. Its important he is fit and raring to go for the 3 important matches of our season.

Mar 25, 2010 at 4:32 PM | Unregistered CommenterClamour_Kid

Spooky, love the blog mate.

Was checking this out on the FA website earlier. If he makes it past the semi without getting another yellow then he can only get suspended (3 match ban) if he gets up to 15 before the end of the season. It goes:

5 before 31st Dec = 1 match ban
10 before 2nd Sunday April (11th) = 2 match ban
15 before end of the season = 3 match ban

Mar 25, 2010 at 4:33 PM | Unregistered Commenterginjag

I say get booked on Saturday, since I'm confident we can beat portsmouth and sunderland now Huddlestone is back to play in the middle, and have him be eligible for the three big league games which we need to get points from if we wish to finish fourth. COYS

Mar 25, 2010 at 4:36 PM | Unregistered CommenterCOYS

On that note, keep clean till April 11th.

Mar 25, 2010 at 4:37 PM | Unregistered CommenterCOYS

Rest him for the next two games. We should beat Portsmouth at home without him (I'm guessing as Avram doesn't need points in the League, he will keep his tactics up his sleeve for the FA Cup). Have him on the bench for Sunderland. Bring him back for the semi.

Mar 25, 2010 at 4:40 PM | Unregistered CommenterLemonadeMoney

Regarding the reaching of 'the second Sunday in April' does this include the 11th? ie, will this come into effect on the morning of the 11th or at close of play?

Regardles, I think he should pay the Sat vs Portsmouth (probably at RB), if booked, then his misses the Sunderland and the semi but is then back for the run-in. If not booked, then rest him for the Sunderland and the semi.... He simply has to play vs the goons and then rest.

Mar 25, 2010 at 4:41 PM | Unregistered CommenterTIMBER

But if it's bookings in "FTCM (First Team Competitive Matches)" then resting till the semi and then getting booked would still result in him missing Scum I (14th) and Scum II (17th)....

Mar 25, 2010 at 4:43 PM | Unregistered Commenterginjag

I believe racking up 10 yellows between first game of season and 'second sunday of april' warrants a 2 game suspension

Any cards after the SF with Pompey will only amount in a ticking off from the FA!

Im pretty sure this is correct.....

Mar 25, 2010 at 4:43 PM | Unregistered CommenterILoveBale

Best way he could have picked up a booking was to either time waste or kick the ball away.... SIMPLE'S !!!

Mar 25, 2010 at 4:44 PM | Unregistered CommenterBobby

Looks to be at the end of the 2nd Sunday so includes the semi...

Mar 25, 2010 at 4:45 PM | Unregistered Commenterginjag

Let's hope ILoveBale is right and I'm wrong!

Mar 25, 2010 at 4:45 PM | Unregistered Commenterginjag

I think the most important games we have are against Pompey, Sunderland, Burnley, Boltan & Man city. Think we can secure 4th if we win these games, lose to city or draw any of the others and it could be curtains, So.....lets concentrate on one game at a time and treat it as a cup final, i,e, play our BEST 11!

Mar 25, 2010 at 4:51 PM | Unregistered CommenterOssie

Spot on Ossie, get the points on the board and let the chasing teams worry about catching up.

Mar 25, 2010 at 4:54 PM | Unregistered Commenterginjag

It is silly at this point to suggest Palacious should pick up another yellow card. We have Pompey, Sunderland and Pompey to play in succession so why not treat it like he has being suspended for those matches? With THudd, we can do fine in the midfield since we have Modric, Kranjcar, and GudJohnson to partner him in the MF. Palacious should be benched for these matches and only introduced if we absolutely need him.

The one thing we are certain of is that if he doesn't pick up another yellow card past April 11th, then he will be good to go against 4 of the top 5.

I did feel for the ARSENAL after last night's result.

Absolutely true story... they know who they are...

Back in 2007, we lost to the Goons in the league cup - sorry, painful memory, I know. So a few weeks later I returned from Egypt and visited my Dad back in Essex. And Im on the early train one Saturday, to go from Witham to Scarborough to see my daughter.

And I get on in Witham and something's rotten in Denmark, cos there's some real meatheads on the train. And it gets worse in Chelmsford, and then I realise that the Filth are away to Blackburn that morning.

And amongst perhaps 12 moody Gooners, the head bloke who's this horrible Skinhead throwback is talking about recent times - he's a little less excitable than some in the pack, obviously had less to prove (Pauli may have moved slow... but it was only cos Pauli didnt have to move for ANYBODY!)

And there's some general talk about how it went off here, and it went off there, and then he says the magic words...

"I'll tell you what, it was f.....ing scary at Tottenham!" (Sweet! :)

"This copper pulls me back, so Ive put my hands against the wall, he goes <Where do you think you are, New York?>"

Then he goes...
"It was even worse at home, turn round the corner and there's five thousand of the w........s."

I just felt sorry for them that they have to come to Tottenham for a night game. Can't stay in the ground for two hours after full time - straight onto the High Road like lambs to the slaughter, poor dears...

Mar 25, 2010 at 5:07 PM | Unregistered CommenterStratty

IaG - Surely if you are going to treat him as being suspended for these 3 games, you might as well play him against Pompey this weekend as the worst that can happen is he misses the next 2 games which you are suggesting he should be rested for anyway. I see no reason to take risk and get ahead of ourselves, we are great at thinking we have made it before we have so lets remember we are not good enough to rest players just yet, secure 4th then take your foot off the peddle

Mar 25, 2010 at 5:08 PM | Unregistered CommenterOssie

Play him in every game and be done with it. We've lost so many players this season for prolonged periods and we've still managed to get on with it.

Mar 25, 2010 at 5:11 PM | Unregistered CommenterOops

Definitely play him in every game if he's fit. Sunderland Away is a tricky tie.

Mar 25, 2010 at 5:19 PM | Unregistered CommenterSpurfect

Just play him & don't worry about it, if he gets booked & misses some big games (every single game is a big one now anyway) then so be it, we'll have to deal with it.
Also, HOT SPURS, I think it's a bit harsh to blame Wilson for Fulham's goal, he had been left on his own in midfield while Modric was trotting back from his attempt.

Mar 25, 2010 at 5:24 PM | Unregistered CommenterRobbie K

I think April 11th is too far away to simply hope that Palacios won't get booked. At the moment, every game's a cup final- we're playing with desire and gusto, a determination that I've not seen in a Spurs side before. There is a will to win, and with that goes the probabilty that Wilson wil find himself booked.
If he plays on Saturday for us and finds his way into the ref's pocket then we'd probably be alright against Sunderland and Portsmouth. He'd be back for the big three run in. I agree that we need to beat Bolton, Burnley and Sunderland, but we're more likely to be able to do them without Wilson. Arsenal, Man U and Chelsea without Wilson, however, is a scary prospect. I'm not expecting us to beat any of the fuckers really, but we do need at least some points from those games! Wilson's just the sort of player who can stop things from happening, keeping it tidy in front of the back four in a way that Huddlestone doesn't. Without him, I think the class of the champions league teams will show.
No way round it; Palacios has to play the big games for us.

Mar 25, 2010 at 5:34 PM | Unregistered CommenterMatty K

It's been said already. Beat the rest and the results against Utd, blue scum and red scum might not be as vital. Three points from the three games with wins elsewhere will be enough.

Mar 25, 2010 at 5:36 PM | Unregistered CommenterThe Machine

Winning at Sunderland would put us in a position where we can draw at City - and then just a point from those three dreaded games would be enough for fourth.

If we need any one individual player against Portsmouth, then we are not the team we think we are. I say that now that he can play at the Stadium fo Light, we don't have a problem.

"I'm not expecting us to beat any of the fuckers really"
Umm... wtf the point of qualifying for the Champions League if we don't expect to beat the teams we're going to meet there - especially at home?
Have faith Matty K!
Ok against Manure we'll more than likely lose, but the home games against Arse and Chelski? 4 points I say.

Mar 25, 2010 at 7:01 PM | Unregistered Commenterlily

Bert - stop writing twice, dammit!

Two points will be enough. United won the league without causing any problems to the elite last year. On a one-off, we know we COULD beat Arsenal or Chelsea at home.

Mar 25, 2010 at 7:06 PM | Unregistered CommenterDumitrescu

Wouldn't it be exciting if we beat the Scums, the Cokes, and the Cokes again, all within a space of 1 month???

Mar 25, 2010 at 7:11 PM | Unregistered CommenterIaG

Lily I think we've got the bones to put up a fight but I think it'll take summer of Champions League calibre investment before we're regularlt tonking those sides, even in our own back yard. Don't get me wrong, I think 4 points over the three fixtures is do-able too (or maybe three!) but the next month of games will decided our future one way or another

Palacios was gash against utd Chelsea and le arse in the matches so far this season. I'm not sure we're THAT desperate for him to play. I thought eidur's and tom were a briiliant midfield pairing last night

Best bit of last night in Block 35 - the old boy going mental whenever "stand up if you hate Arsenal" was sung.

Absolutely hilarious.

And why after 30mins people act like we have lost I will never understand - SUPPORT your team dickheads.

Sorry all-my i-net is shit post it 4 times because of that. Also its not DavSpurs-its Bert who create Man U by making all jews to pull the money alway from Man C and create them...you know 2 world war and stuff...german keeper broken neck jews money-Man U,right?
I honestly do love Spurs and love this honduran 'beast'-because of what here on the ground,of the ground-in his private life and never then less because of what he help us to be.Tom Huddelston tgank him for helping out to develop,Arry is in love with him,JJ stay away because of him...the guy is class and with Spiderman and Dawson are the 3 player who definetly have male sex in our team.Have the balls. And Pav who may will be our number 1 up front again....rest you know them:Corluka good control on building up,great vision time2time cant be bother
Bassong want to not always can make it
BAE-well as i said french-arabic bitch who often bend-over on opposite crosses and miss his man easy cost as so many goals.Thats why was out half time-not Arry genious only it was that bad.
Tom doing ok but agains top side ball to heavy
Niko could do briliant or could make half without complete pass
Azza -forrest gump ,wind boy delivery and some games could sleep out
Defoe-need 6 to make 1 with already 12 off-side in his account
Peter-always work hard-not to many goals cause is to far away from goal row, playing for England diferent story
Keane-sad story about man with ex glory
JJ,Bentley,Hutton-short of words.Bentley mayn be.And mr.Bale-amaizing how quick he look like Azza on the left-quick good touch but last pass need to be address to some one no just in there.Azza not yet there may take some time for Bale also.
Wilson for me should be our capitan.I love you all two.thanks for the time reading it
Modric-genious,vision of the game like no 1 else, looks tired already need more physics

Is it just me, but the games against arsenal, chelski and the glazers...I think we can get 4 points...of yes...u heard right we can win one of those. With Palacious against arsenal and chelski we have a really good chance and with all the players coming back there is a chance. Wilson is the difference this year..he is the thing we have missed for too many seasons that I care to remember.

Also..I am a Levy Hater...I admit...but make top 4 and the fa cup final...I will have to say well done:)
