Spurs unveil new home kit

No matter how many times we fire, we just never seem to do any real damage.

This might just be the words engraved on our 4th spot headstone cometh the end of the season.

You can't fault the side for effort. It's not like we're not crafting out chances. [ground-hog day] We just don't seem to have the cutting edge to put to bed teams who sit back and defend against us [/ground-hog day].

Christ, imagine if we were a tad more clinical? We'd wipe the floor with practically 90% of the Prem. Instead, we make the art of winning a game (based on chances and possession) look like hard graft, and in the end we get a point for our troubles and plenty of head shaking. What makes it even more frustrating is the fact we are leaving ourselves susceptible to a counter-attack and sucker punch goal. Simply because we don't stick in the back of the net. It's not great for the heart, but then watching Spurs never is.

Are we unlucky? Maybe, a little. Perhaps its our routine 'trying to hard' style of play when at times perhaps we should disguise our play a little with a clever ball. Game could have done with the touch of Gudjohnsen. I'm assuming he's not quite ready for action. Or Harry simply decided the game was just too highly strung to risk changing it's dynamics.

Villa, I expected to see arrive at the Lane and give it a right old go. Instead they parked the bus and defended, at times, brilliantly. Respect from Villa or just negative tactics from MON? Either way, they're the ones happy with the point. We're left with heads jam-packed with what ifs.

We played well, perhaps not excelling in one or two areas. But once more, did enough to win it and yet just about enough not to. Modric was involved but not quite on top of his game in the final third. Bale and Bentley continue to impress - Bale especially from a defensive perspective. Proud to see these two do well. Bentley continues to show determined consistency. Wilson was strong, Hudd equally so but didn't do enough IMO in an offensive way. Game needed someone to dictate. Hudd doesn't always impose himself half as much as he's capable of doing. We defended well too but then it wasn't like Villa put us under pressure. Gomes alert when called upon.

Should Harry have made a sub and taken a risk? Niko for Moddle? Had it not worked out I'm sure some of us would have still criticised him for making the wrong substitution.

I do think that had Lennon played in this game and one or two others in recent weeks we'd be in a better position. CL football is not in a galaxy far far away, but rather just a hyper-jump away.

13 games left. No need for a funeral procession just yet. But with Liverpool back in 4th and waiting on the return of Torres, once more we're left hoping all this possession ends with one or two head shots. At the very least.

That game was ridiculous and not what I needed to see before I dug my car out of 30 inches of snow. Whoever ends up with the 4 spot is going to have to rely on luck in some form.

It's amazing how there is always something not quite really with us. Usually its 4-5 shit players. It's a good problem to have this but it will be costly if we dont change things around in the next game. Hate to end up 7th after spending so much time in 4th. Liverpool have quietly got themselves back in it and I would be too shocked if they ended up 3rd above Arsenal.

PS. Spurs = Stormtroopers? Nailed it.

Feb 7, 2010 at 1:52 PM | Unregistered CommenterOops

Spooky do you not think ,that taking crouch of and playing Niko or Gudjohnsen just behind Defoe would have made us play a more offensive game from the midfield. surely this would of put more pressure on their defence and midfield and allowing us to play a more direct game like Le Arse play , where by they have players that can score from midfield as well as up front.

Feb 7, 2010 at 1:56 PM | Unregistered Commenterkoko61

I know that there will be a chorus of anti-Keane vituperation at this, but letting him go will come back to haunt us before the season ends ....... Defoe either scores or doesn't, but generally does against poor opposition - the same is true for Crouch, and it is thus when either gets a game for England. We have Pav injured, and even he would be a chance for variety ...... but has no one remembered that when he came on to score against Leeds, after Defoe had made a pig's ear of it all (really getting fed up with hearing commentators tell me he is 'on fire'), the guy who set him up was pointy shouty and he is no longer available ........ We can only hope the that youngster we've brought in from Barcelona will provide a little variety. And am I alone in believing that, after a while, teams do tend to get used to the endless supply of long balls on to Crouch's thick bonce?

Feb 7, 2010 at 1:57 PM | Unregistered CommenterTommyHarmer

I think that we should stop worrying about where we finish, anywhere from 4th to 7th at the moment. Play well, as we are doing, entertain with some attacking football, which we are doing, keep it tight at the back, which we are doing and hope for some help from other results.
Recently we beat City, outplayed Villa, but were dismal against Liverpool so if they pip us for 4th so be it.
Yesterday we could have scored at any time in the last 20mins so I agree with Harry, which I don't always do, Who would you have taken off? Harry has come unstuck with his substitutions lately so play the percentages and leave it as it is.
He did the same against Leeds, he must have read a new coaching manual from the time before subs were allowed.

Crouch is a good player but the good teams know how to deal with him. When this happens we seem to have no way through and need the likes of Modirc, Keane or maybe Gudjohnsen to unlock the defence. This was obvious before half time and we should have brought Crouch off then. Long ball only works against the sh*t teams.

I laughed my ass off when I read the title and saw the pic! Thanks for brightening up the moment Spooky!

I thought we were great last night! Once again, we are lacking an instinctual striker... another Defoe to aid in these situations. All in all, the boys were a joy to watch, especially Bale. Gentlemen, be expecting a lot of offers to be thrown our way come summer time. A LOT! On attack, the boy knows how to switch the tempo of play... and on defence, he has shown a world of improvement which makes me proud to have him in lilywhite... or should I say: Storm Trooper White?

It's funny people wanting Arry to haul off cr'Ouch for a little and little forward line. I'm not his buggest fan, but the good far outweighs the bad when playing against Villa. If you haven't you noticed, they're quite good in the air. Defensively and offensively (yes in that particular fashion) cr'Ouch was effective - the lack of clinicality was shared by all our attacking players. It was too important a game to take unecessary risks, especially when we were playing so well. A point seems a bit glass half empty at the moment, but a point will be useful in the run in. Chin up, chests out, be proud and the spurs will go marking on.

Feb 7, 2010 at 2:25 PM | Unregistered CommenterTrembly

Nah TommyHarmer--it's not we were any closer to scoring with Keano.
I'm not a Keane hater. I just think he sucked the energy out of our attack and he never established the right dynamic with any of our other--I'm sorry to say--hugely overrated and unclinical strikers.
Getting rid of him may not have solved any problems but I fail to see how it hurt. He wasn't contributing anything meaningful to our attack.

I can't help but think that in the top of the Prem it's so bloody tight that you need to make your own luck, ie you need to get into that dirty mind game of manipulating referees. You see Ferguson, Wenger and Benitez do it week in and week out, where as Redknapp sits there, takes it on the chin and never brings forward any criticism after the game when things unrightfully go against us. When Defoe went down to the challenge inside the box right before the end I just knew we would not get it, simply because we're getting accustomed to Spurs never getting any of those by referees any more. Hell, Dunne even said after the game it was a penalty, but you hear us complaining? Nope. I am afraid that it sits in the back of the head of referees that they won't get any stick if they don't give us what we deserve, because nobody complains anyway. Against Liverpool it was a bloody disgrace. Anyone saw the Kyrgiakos assault on Crouch, yet the ref gives it the other way around. And offside at Defoes goal, are you kidding me? It's a completely new situation when the Pool players starts messing it up, the ref might as well have said that he came from an offside possition in another game at any other time of his life to have annulled that, it just doesn't make sense. Even if the linesman's a dud any ref in his right mind will see this and over rule it. Again, any complaints, or polite comments on how the ref cost us two goals? Nope. Don't get me wrong, I don't like Wengers og Fergusons constant moaning, but I think that all the managers of the biggest teams do it for a reason: they know it's simply not possible getting those crucial decisions your way unless the ref's have it in the back of their heads that they'll get hell if they wrong your side. And that means a shit load of points come end of the season. The solution for me is starting to use video refereeing as it will finally bring some fairness into the game. But until then: start bloody telling the refs when they are wrong! Pundits, players and fans alike sees it, but refs will continue to unconsciously be biased as long as we sit there and take it all without a whimper.

Lennon raiding down the right and Bale down the left means we will have more attacking options and be less reliant on 70 yard punts up to Crouch.
Its not Crouchs fault we keep punting the ball up to him and whilst hes not pretty to watch and will not score 20 a season, his prescence leads to a lot of chances such as yesterdays penalty shout.
I don't care whether Bale plays left back, left midfield or left wing but he is our most dangerous attacker on the left and to drop him for BAE or anyone else would be madness and would ruin the confidence it has taken months to build up.
He is 20 years old and is only going to improve. Can't wait!

Another good post Spooky, I really do enjoy your posts and look forward to them after the game. I am at a disadvantage to most of you guys as I don't get to the games (due to geography) and only get to see them on tinterweb, sky or highlights on MOD. This is the best football I have seen Spurs play in many a year and imo are the better of the chasing group. The football most of the time is top notch, 3rd, 4th 5th 4th 5th.... all season? We are progressing!! Going in the right direction, not quite there yet but getting there. I think there is better to come. The young Lennon to come back will be a big boost a la Torres for the pool. Defoe is NOT ON FIRE but still he is scoring, there is more to come from JD. Crouch is a conundrum, I would love to see Pav play as he can play. Bale is excellent, again not the finished package but getting there. Who is this Bentley bloke, I don't remember seeing him before. There used to be some bloke with a similar name hanging around but he was sh**e. King is unable to play as often as I would like but when he does, HE DOES! I know everyone harps back to how bad we were at the start of last year, but compare us now to how bad we were at the start of last year!! As a team we are bloody brilliant to watch at times, when teams attack I don't find myself hiding behind the sofa anywhere near as much as I used to. We are getting there, believe it folks we will get there!! Franco, I see your point but I would prefer to win a penalty cos it was a penalty not because the ref is scared of a bollockin, Whiner, Red Nose and the Waiter should be hammered by the FA for comments against the ref, he's only human. I would prefer that he concentrates purely on the game and not worrying what is going to be said about him if he makes the wrong decision. At least then the decisions will based on what he saw and not on worrying about who he is going to upset!! Video replay is the only real way to go but that's for another time. This is my first post so please go easy on me!
Salutations from Belfast!!

Defoe reminds me of Kris Boyd at Rangers, he can rattle them in against the cannon fodder, but he rarely does it against the big boys. Has he ever scored against the goons, manu or chelski for us??

I thought at 25 minutes to go that we needed Gudjohnsen on to mix it up a bit.

Franco and malSpur are bang on about Harry and refs, they don't fear him so we will never get a big decision against the sky top 4.

Our first choice starting XI is as good as any non CL club could dream of. But beyond that we lack quality in sufficent depth to take a top four place. Pity because if the summer days once again bring forth the phrase "once a players head is turned" then it is back on the merry go round we go for another four years or more.

I can't even belive this. It's impossible. We had 6 matches that we could have won and could be in a greater position.
1. Tottenham vs Stoke . This could have benn our fu***** day but no we couldn't score.
2. Tottenham vs Wolves. Although we thought that if they scored they would play 10 players at the back we attacked and al for nothing.
3. Tottenham vs Hull. Another match that we had to win but again lots of chances but Myhill wwas fu***** Buffon.
4. Tottenham vs Liverpool. A match that i was so sad about. A goal that it had had had to stand. This could have changed the game.
5. Tottenham vs Aston Villa. Again we were really good but Friedel was a god and although we had 15 chances and probably more again we didn't score.
So these are the games were we can tell god why didn't u let us win. I can't believe it. We could have been 3rd or even second.

1. Tottenham vs Everton. We threw this game away. 2 vs 0 down why not just play possesion and defend no we keep attacking and what they do. They score in the last 4 minutes of the game.

I would very like to see spurs in Champo league but i don't think it will happen. Man City have to game less than us
and we can be 6 th by Wednesday.

Long Ball only works when the person it's aimed at can direct a header. It no good blindly heading on for a 4 foot striker against 11 men camped in the penalty box. Crounch headers are not headers as such more rebounds off his goofy bonce. He even dies the aaaw shucks that goofy does when the camera shows him messing up another free header. Rather than give away a free kick in challenging Crouch 4 headers the oppo let him header it cause 9 times out of 10 the 2nd ball ain't goona make it to anywhere near one of our players.

Lennon would'nt have made any difference. Krancjar .. maybe...? They needed to be opened up teased out of their box .. more passes along the back 4 & mid drawing them out making them chase the ball .. We can be too direct for our own good and teams have figured out that trying to go toe to toe with us will lead to a defeat.

"Nice to see Joe Lewis at the match yesterday - our part owner and not the Peterborough goalkeeper."

And there was me thinking of the boxer, but I suppose he's well brown bread.

We were devastating yesterday in all but the finishing. Had we had a bit of luck we would have murdered them. Even Huddlestone's hoofs were on target for once. Agree with most of what has been said about Crouch and Defoe. I like Defoe but we definitely need a plan B. Can't make my mind up about Crouch. He looks such an arse most of the time, but just when you think he is as big a c*nt as Jenas he often pulls something out of the hat. Unfortunately yesterday he didn't. The only way out of this is to pay very big bucks for a very decent striker or two. That way we would make our own luck. It would be nice to see Pav have a go more often, but all the signs have been that he is a bit lightweight for the Prem. Curious to see how we got on trying to overturn the Wolves bus again on Wednesday.

Long balls to crouch is not the tactic to play against an MON team. He's a centre backs guru, and he will privately have been pissing himself to see those balls launched up all day. James Collins is far from a top class centre back, but if all you do is punt it long he will look loke flippin Nesta. Bad bad tactics from harry....Defoe need to take a large portion of blame. He was simply waiting for chances to ffall to him that were never gonna come. In games agaimst top quality defences we need creativity from our forwards. Defoe and crouch looked worryinly one dimensional up there.

With crouch, its not his fault, he just dont have the class...defoe, however, does. He needs to do more to create his own chances rather than just waiting for chances to come. The game was very different from hull....we didnt really create a lot of clear cut chances in open play...it was all half chances, snapshots....villa would have been very happy with that. The 'cutting edge' to the attack wasnt there. Against a team as defensively excellent as villa, you need variation.

Villa shut down the wings, well done them. Not sure about the wisdom on forking out all that cash for wingers only to play them as glorified wings backs....but whatever martin. I dont even thing they played with a cantre forward. I mean, they played with a centre, but this aint basketball and heskey did his best dwight howard impression. Villa simply cant pas/hold onto the ball. If they got in the CL they would getr shown up big time...they just cant keep it.

Spooky, love the blog, but you need to take off your shit tinted goggles as far as huddlestone is concerned. He was superb yesterday, best CM on show. Passing was excellent, he was very hard and competative, and he also forced friedel into 2 great saves. He needs to do more of that, but please remember he is only in a 2 man CM, so has far less license to attack. The burden should fall more on defoe and crouch tro create stuff in attack. Huddlestone has 4 other players in the team playing more advanced than him. its his job to give the ball to those players, which he did/has done. The bottom line is that in a pretty short space of time he has iimproved immesurably, and i think he is pretty fast becoming a serious PL midfielder. A very serious one. Please, before you criticise him, remember what his actual job in the team is. dont criticise him for not doing things that other players should be doing. He plays a very similar role to what carrick did. And it wasnt really carricks job to create stuff int he final 30/40 yards. Thats where we need defoe dropping deep to make things happen. I've seen enough in the last few weeks to tell me that Huddlestone will go on to play many, many times for England, and probably play for a top 4 team, sooner rather than later.

Did you see that bit in the game where king strode forward, looking to start a serious attack, skipping by someone and laying it off? Fucking hell, if we had that ever week....if only he werent so shot....

Modric was frustrating...got into good positions, but you get the impression he never really believes hes gonna score. I dont care how good he is, luka, you have tro start scoring more goals. Especially since sadly it seems palacious suffers from the same brain disease as our old friend zokora ie brain goes into meltdown when they get within 30 yards of goal.

Why no subs? Oh yeah, cos you decided to buy a striker who hasnt really played regular fist tream football for about 3 years. masterful harry.

Feb 7, 2010 at 5:35 PM | Unregistered Commenterchrisman

the longer the game went on, the more effective modric became I thought. We simply need to get the ball to modric more than we have been doing lately. Payback for wolves this week please spurs!

Feb 7, 2010 at 5:37 PM | Unregistered CommenterCEJ

oh and to add one thing...to those going on about luck....i got news for you, luck doesnt fucking exist, not in top level sports. Luck is an expression used when someone has a momentary lapse which causes them to fail to execute a basic skill they should be able to execute. It's not actually 'luck' at all, its a failure to perform at the level you should be able to due to a split second psycholigical or physical failure.

So when someone says 'with a bit more luck we would have won' what they really mean is 'if we hadnt totally bottled it at crucial moments we would have won'. The idea that it is just pure bad luck that we have made so many fuck ups this season is pure fantasy. Defoe missing a peanlty v everton, keane missing 2 open goals v hull, letting b'ham score int he 92nd minute....these are not incidents of bad luck.

Gomes has been one of the safest hands in the League..That is a measure of real progress.. I still have hope for this season and hope the forward line start firing consistently for the biz end of the season.. Keep creating chances, keep it tight at the back and we are in with a shout.. COYS

Feb 7, 2010 at 6:22 PM | Unregistered CommenterSteviespurs

There are lots of positives at the moment from a Spurs point of view, no least that though Villa are a more than useful team their only option when playing us is to defend like they're lives depend upon it. Huddlestone seems to be coming of age, acquitting himself well against a very strong opposing midfield, along side the Sgt.

But we clearly do have a problem. The Crouch question is a tough one because he breaks his back for the team every time he pulls on the shirt, but he isn't quite good enough and if we want to push on for the remainder of the season then Pav or Gudjohnson (or even Niko?) need to start ahead of him.

We urgently need to find a way to convert periods of dominance into points because otherwise come the end of the season we will face the usual struggle to hold onto our best players (the number of which seems to be mutlipying by the minute).

The frustrating thing is that you get the feeling the squad of players we have would excell in a 4-5-1 formation if we had the type of CF for that position. We don't and the truly good ones are as rare as hen's teeth (that's why teams end up paying over the odds for your D Bents, K Jones etc etc etc). I'm going to give Martin Chivers a call.

Feb 7, 2010 at 7:00 PM | Unregistered Commenternycyid

Defoe just needs to sort his flippin life out and realise that if he's ever gonna be any good he's gonna have to work out how to play up front on his own. We need to be able to switch to 4-5-1 (as said by MEKC). I would have liked to have seend Eidur or Niko on for 2 Meter Peter, Villas defenders would have been far less comfortable dealing with lots of passing to feet to quick technical players. For so many different situations you need to be able to play a 4-5-1, so Jermaine....sort it out.

We need someone who idealy combines the strength of Crouch and Defoe. Big-ish, strong, quick, skilful, good at heading, good shooting. Where we will find this man I know not. One thing is that if you do find someone, you don't play them for 6-8 months, see them show promise and do ok, then long them off (Pav). Strikers can take 6-12 months to really adapt in the PL. Just look at Drogba. Was always a great player, but for his fist year in the PL was not good at all. Tevez too. Players have to be given time, esp foreign ones.

Feb 7, 2010 at 7:01 PM | Unregistered Commenterchrisman

main culprits of banging the long balls up to crouch all the time are our defensive players who 9 times out of ten bypass our midfield. Dawson, gomes, corluka, bassong are always hitting long balls to crouch. Where as if we built up our play our midfield would be more advanced and our strikers would be in better positions! Instead its up to crouch who knocks it down, cant control it loses it and the chance has gone. For counter attacking the long ball may work but we need our supporting midfielders to play it in, to be more advanced and this will allow our strikers to get into better positions easy real

The 4-5-1 formation debate is interesting because when we last played it for a season, the sole striker, Clive Allen, scored 49 goals.
He was about 5' 9", had little pace, could not hold the ball up and was not much good in the air! Sorry Clive!
But he had the happy knack of being in the right place at the right time more often than anyone has a right to.
He also had Hoddle, Ardiles, Waddle and Villa supplying him with chances.
We have some excellent mid-fielders so could be worth a go but it relies heavily on midfielders supporting the front man quickly, otherwise the move usually breaks down.
Not sure Defoe fits the criteria for a sole striker but then neither did Clive Allen!

For anyone who missed Whingers post match interview today, part of the reason they lost was because of time wasting by Chelsea and their supporters, who refused to throw the ball back when it went out of play!
You could not write it.
Last time Chelsea beat them, whinger said Drogba did nothing except score 2 goals.
Well he scored another 2 today and hit the bar.
Imagine what he could do against them if he only made the effort!

I just feel that against teams like villa instead of humping high balls into the box for the last 15 minutes we need to get it down on the deck and play Dunne and Collins were winning everything in the air we were playing into their hands. For me crouch just is not top four quality we need to start scoring more goals from set pieces with king and crouch in there this just is'nt happening we had loads of corners last night and sooner or later we need to make some of these count. We never seem to score lucky goals or fluky goals maybe our luck will change at the business end of the season. Good game for a nil-nil just was not our day COYS

We need to buy some Tallyban to play upfront has any body noticed Yanky goalkeeper are stopping us from our destiny Howard Hanamann Friedl Myhill have taken 9 points of us with great saves. The funny thing my beloved fans don't comment on is why can Drogba score just one goal at Hull and Wigan beat Chelsea Liverpool without Torres Gerrard jabbed up to the eyeballs , The big nose Creek Donkey well he was till he had to play then he went faster ,got himself sent of and they still won 1-0 .Hull drew with Chelsea on Tuesday then beat City on Saturday. And you are calling us for not beating a descent side wake up and clear your eyes Liverpool are where they, and the FA want them to be and UTD will be on top at the end if vroooomy and Nanirocket2 don't run out of gas.Two observations because i Live down here and i now the real reason why Benitez was so confident of staying in the Cartel and high has a Kuyt KITE is the new Torres . one last hint Hypia is now at a German club they are top he is scoring for fun ,Dossena wet to Dynamo Moscow the team that where beating utd 30 at half time ih the eourope league they eventually drew 3-3 and the Goalkeeper was outstanding and stopped UTD WinNnng after the game two players failed drug test for Ephedrine but pleaded innocents and said it was sudafed they got a two match ban only because Utd had already finished top So if you put two and two together you will now the team who have bean Reported for energy abuse and can win whoever plays and has spread like Moscow to other teams, like it did in Rugby League till players where dying .

The problem is Crouch....simple as that. We have no variation in attack without Lennon. he is the worst thing that has happened to us this season. We are even bypassing our midfield at times. The ball is pumped high, he is not winning all the headers and when he does, there is no direction on the ball. Every defence knows what we are about, and the teams that do not attack us are simply waiting for the long ball. Without Lennon, no width and no variation. I think its time for Pav to have a go!!!

Sorry to say but I thought Redknapp was gutless on the weekend, he lacked those big balls the the big managers have that take risks to win a game and end up in the champions league. The last 20mins of the game we needed more energy in the midfield and some fresh legs upfront. Kranks and Jenas could have provided us with that and Guds would have been a good sub from about the 60th min for Defoe, I felt he just wasn't involved enough. Crouchy might not have scored as many goals as Defoe but he was fighting for every inch and creating for every one. Guds was that hungry for a game that he would have done something spectacular for us, just like he used to doe for Chelski and BARCA but no, Redknapp sat on his seat like scared little boy not changing anything. We needed 3 points and nothing less, sometimes you have to go for the win and say at least I tried something rather than nothing. We were pressuring Villa that much that another striker or possibly an extra striker upfront would have made it alot harder for them. Whilst I think Harry has done a great job, I think he has lacked success as a manager like the Special one, Wenger, Fergy, Ancelotti, Benitez, and all the rest because HE HAS NO BALLS!!!!
