International heart-break

#1

International break. It's no longer about whether England perform solidly and win and more so a thoroughly painstaking experience looking through your fingers as you cover your face with your hand gagging on your heart in mouth, hoping/praying/sacrificing the Arsenal supporting neighbours cat to pacify the footballing Gods type of evening in.

We (The Tottenham) have got plenty of international players. But it's the ones who represent England that tend to come back with missing limbs and shrapnel embedded in their splintered bodies. This time round, we have Huddlestone, Lennon and Crouch representing. Some of you may argue that your concerns will be more focused on the likes of Bale and van der Vaart. Both more likely to play a part for their nation. I think. You know what, I haven't even checked the fixture list for midweek and next week. I'm that frigging professional. The fact of the matter is, you and I will both be hoping for no injuries more so than looking out for actual results and performances. The priority is club over country. Again.

We don't want our merchandise returned damaged.

So, what to do in the mean time? Not a lot. Other than endure the time out from the Premier League by going for brisk walk in the park and writing poetry for your lover. Perhaps the weaker amongst you will try to pretend you do care about Fabio and the boys because you prefer to dance with the devil and watch the game with a machete in one hand and the neighbours cat in the other.

I sadly can't muster up the will power at the moment to ready myself for the torment of watching the live coverage.

Okay, you got me, I've misplaced my machete.

My attention, to be perfectly honest with you, will be firmly stuck on another type of kick-off altogether this weekend (rather than the one against Montenegro on Tuesday 12th). I'm talking about the live X-Factor shows that begin on Saturday. Yes, you heard me right. I said, X-Factor. I said X-Factor on a Spurs blog. I've gone and done it now, I've pulled you all outside of the boundaries of sports writing and into off-topic discussion. Don't shake your head at me. Hey, stop spitting at your monitor screen, calm down will ya!

In my defence, I watch it for the pure cynicism that it evokes from me, as it's the most fabricated, contrived show on television and somehow people who tune in seem to either not care about the big con and the awful set-piece acting and scripted pretences or just accept it for what it is and watch it regardless for the kicks provided by the soap opera dramatics it positively drowns in. Bit like following England I guess. You might ask why, if I know its such a shallow show, why would I still tune in just to anger the blood to boiling point? I guess it's because I can scream and shout at the stupidity and the egos without the back draft of worrying about the end result. Oh hold up, that's just like following England again.

However, the Three Lions have Ashley and X-Factor has Cheryl.

No contest.

How can I possibly resist the beauty of Tweedy as she subtly looks down at the sheet of paper in front of her, eyes glistening with concentration, and looks back up again to the contestant waiting nervously on stage as she reads out the highlighted-for-her-attention relevant sound-bite to exuberant applause from the studio audience.

Hating on International break? A million percent yes from me.

We cant worry every time we play Internationals because the Premiership his fast becoming a dangerous league . What happened to Ben Arfa was a timely reminder how cruel Football can be . The one player who would make me panic if he got a bad injury his our new Kung Fu expert and play maker Tom lee Huddlestone

Oct 5, 2010 at 8:31 PM | Unregistered CommenterDavspurs

I am from a country where our national team is shit, so I couldn't give a damn about international football and all this means is a week where I'm bored out of my fucking mind, fully expecting one or two of my favourite players coming back crocked.

COME ON...LAND! whatever. see you next week.

There's an international break now?

Oct 5, 2010 at 8:41 PM | Unregistered CommenterKilljoy

England internationals also seem to follow a script, Rooney runs around and does fuck all, any other striker who scores gets dropped for the next game and no one is allowed to pass to Lennon, oh and a couple of injuries for us, just to fuck us up further, X factor with Wifey it is then

Oct 5, 2010 at 8:43 PM | Unregistered CommenterSteveYid

Changing the subject here, but it appears we are serious about moving to the Olympic stadium. Why is this the case when we have just received planning permission from Haringey Counil for our new ground next to The Lane? Doesn't make sense at all.

Oct 5, 2010 at 8:44 PM | Unregistered CommenterVootheYid

It's gotta be a back up plan,in case our Mayor decides not to give the final rubber stamp to our ambitious plans. It would be silly to have no plan at all and has added pressure to the relevant officials not to fuck around. Or it could be a lot cheaper on the balance sheet and appeal to the "shareholders"

Oct 5, 2010 at 8:59 PM | Unregistered CommenterSteveYid

Shit, just re-read my post, that's a lot of plans

Oct 5, 2010 at 9:02 PM | Unregistered CommenterSteveYid

Hudd wont play. Lennon, probably not. Crouch the only one in the firing line.

Oct 5, 2010 at 9:25 PM | Unregistered CommenterAuthor of Comment

The Olympic stadium story has to be another message for Boris to get on with rubber stamping it. Spurs in Stratford? Thanks, but fucking no thanks.

From the Guardian:

"AEG Europe's chief executive, David Campbell, added that Tottenham's fan base made it a more viable option than West Ham. "They have got 35,000 people on a paid-for waiting list. They can fill 60,000 seats. Can West Ham? I don't know, but I don't feel as confident as I do about Tottenham."

Still, I hate the place and don't want to give up North London to those scummers down the road...

Ramos: lost his job because he kept Huddlestone on the bench.
Harry; built his house on Hudd.

If Huddlestone gets injured playing for England, we are done for.

What is all this bollocks with being 'first'?! Bet your Mrs is well satisfied. . .

Can't see Spurs in East London. Levy is just playing the game, and playing it well

Oct 5, 2010 at 10:20 PM | Unregistered CommenterDave

The reasoning behind the Stratford move is due to a lot of lost revenue on the proposed WHL redevelopment. THFC had to cutback the number of houses from 500 to 200 which represents a serious loss of incoming cash, that and TfL wanting more money from us to redevelop Tottenham Hale.

We know Levy isn't likely to throwmoney away so, while the powers that be continue to drive up the price of the new gound the Stratford move becomes more financialy viable. Of course, we are certain within ourselves that Levy would never genuinely attempt to move the club.....would he?

Oct 5, 2010 at 10:38 PM | Unregistered CommenterJohnnyB

300 homes is a lot of cash, hopefully it's more about costs not increasing any further and getting the best deal possible from TFL. Brinksman to the end.

Oct 5, 2010 at 10:54 PM | Unregistered CommenterSteveYid

Jesus H, X-factor? Don't take me wrong bro, but your wife must be bordering on Stephen Ireland like influence. Just saying. You'll have a Spooky fussball table and pink rims before you know it.

Oct 5, 2010 at 11:15 PM | Unregistered CommenterThat

I can have the rims changed to blue.

If that helps.

At all.

Everyone loves Cheryl.

Oct 5, 2010 at 11:52 PM | Unregistered CommenterThe Machine

Shocked at the x factor confession.

Oct 5, 2010 at 11:55 PM | Unregistered CommenterYidkid

Anything but X factor for me, even the car-crash that is England is not as depressing as that drivel. I think the depths plunged at the world cup will actually change things for the national side in future. Even Cheryl Cole doesnt do it for me and I've shagged her.

Oct 5, 2010 at 11:57 PM | Unregistered CommenterRonman

I wonder what youd be on x-factor spooky. A clinger?

Oct 6, 2010 at 12:33 AM | Unregistered Commenterbeterthanlife

To paraphrase the great Jewish thinker Hillel the Elder: "Spurs. That is the whole Torah. The rest is commentary. Go and learn it."

Nations are meaningless. There is only Spurs.

Olympic Stadium anyone? I know. I know....... It aint Tottnham....... but we are! OVER LAND AND SEA...... I see this move as a blessing..... We out grew the Lane years ago

Oct 6, 2010 at 8:07 AM | Unregistered CommenterWisky Tom

At least the transport links will be very good?

Oct 6, 2010 at 9:07 AM | Unregistered CommenterDonor Kebab Pot Noodle

no olympic stadium. it's not a football stadium for a start and no way can we move to east london. I'd rather stay at WHL with just 36,000 than move.

Oct 6, 2010 at 9:34 AM | Unregistered Commenterlilywhitemike

Staying at the lane (36,000) stunts our growth...........we must grow, we must develop - if we don't well then great! we'll tread water for the foreseeable future and watch everyone around us big it up! Redevelopment of the Lane will never happen......... Boris is a cnut of monumental proportions!

Anyway if we do rock up in the EAST........west ham will fade and die.......within 10 earthling years

Oct 5, 2010 at 8:20 PM | Gc"

Anyone who writes this is a total bellend. Who cares?

The Olympic stadium is clearly just a ruse to pressure Boris into accepting the new stadium in Tottenham. Which we are designing ourselves, has that great one tier stand, and will be SO much better than Stratford. Levy has to talk it up like it's a serious option to move to the Olympic Stadium otherwise it's clear he''s bluffing, but we all know it's a last resort if someone makes a mad, mad decision to let Tottenham's only serious asset leave the area.

Oct 6, 2010 at 10:30 AM | Unregistered CommenterBen

I understand the feelings about staying in North London and the link with the local community but we have a very large fanbase and for a lot of those (not even including the foreigners) getting tickets on a regular basis is pretty hard and expensive

Some people are afraid that we would create the same atmosphere as in the library up the road but it is not the ground that creates the noise , it's the crowd

If we want to progress then we need more seats , more income ... if we want to compete with the likes of Chelski, Manure and the Arse then a new ground is inevitable even if it is in East London

But i am not from London so i cannot truely experience the emotional side of this move , i am looking at from a practical point of view

Oct 6, 2010 at 10:35 AM | Unregistered Commenterbelgian spur

Just say no to Stratford. All the hype surrounding it will get us the development work in N17 signed off. No problem.

Oct 6, 2010 at 10:47 AM | Unregistered CommenterGrim down south

Couple of things.

Not 1st!!

No to Olympic stadium ( that's a given) we'd have to redevelop it anyway

Lord Sugar on football focus last sat was giving it all we this we that but also did say that in the planning consent things have driven up the cost by about 30 mil.
Looks like it's just pressure games by levy. He knows he'd be headfucked if he took us away from whl.

Tweedy is as cute as fuck. Can't stand the fake tears though.

The apprentice is back tonight.

Tune in. Or don't and watch it on the BBC player during the England match.

Come home safe boys (yes that includes you crouchie)

anyone hoping keane picks up a knock!?!??

Oct 6, 2010 at 10:51 AM | Unregistered CommenterTomtraubert

Also another negative comment by the anti-tottenham propaganda machine that is sky

they had Darren Lewis on this morning going through the top ten richest owners in England and reading through them when it came to Joe Lewis and his 2.7bn Sarah Jane (hot hot hot) piped up "oh that's paltry compared to man city"

was there any need for that? No. She didn't comment on any other one either.

Interestingly the lad that owns southampton is worth 3bn.

Oct 6, 2010 at 10:57 AM | Unregistered CommenterTomtraubert

Fact is, they can be worth whatever, but its not disposable cash under the bed and it's all a tad irrelevant if, say for example, Lewis for all his wealth doesn't actually throw money at us. We are run, within our means, which is credit to Levy and the business model used.

Although a £80M bung our way wouldn't be too shabby.

Good point belgian spur - I'm a Londoner and live in Bournemouth.....The only reason I go to London now is to watch Spurs, and visit a small proportion of relatives still living there! I would never move back - the place is a mess! However I'm proud to be a Londoner and always will be - it's in my soul, blood and accent - no matter where I go and how far I travel that will never change.....I am who I am.

I first went to the Lane in 1971...... and soon after became a disciple - for many years I followed Tottenham over land and sea..... However I was not a paid up member of the club and as a consequence found that i was unable to always get tickets for home games! So my love for Tottenham was poured over other club's terraces!! For me - the club is so much more than Tottenham high road, To me it's being part of something far deeper than a place - and lets face it - a shithole of a place!!

Don't get me wrong - I would love us to build a new stadium and see Tottenham sparkle - but bureaucratic gore will have us jumping through hoops until the 2nd coming. So...if push comes to shove...... fuck um - let them riot the halfwited fuckwits

Oct 6, 2010 at 11:23 AM | Unregistered CommenterWisky Tom

I just hope to god that they extend the tube to a closer station if we end up staying. I don't think the current (near) stations such as WHL and Northumberland Park could cope with the increase in people, they'd probably need to be expanded in some way. I'd hate to leave the lane, I love it there even if its surroundings are a dive. However the Olympic stadium (in conjunction with AEG) would make more financial sense in the long and short term.
