Liverpool have no grit

Looks like they want the game to be called off thanks to the storming snow falls and the lack of grit which has left most of the city iced over. I know people in Liverpool. The whole place practically shut down a few days ago (no public transport, schools) because of the conditions. Oh well. Brace yourselves for the game to be re-scheduled during the dreaded month of April, no doubt.

Disappointing.

Unbelievable.

Conspiracy! Its another lasagne incident waiting to happen!

Jan 8, 2010 at 12:09 PM | Unregistered Commenterspursfan

Could be a liverpool scheme to play us later in the season when they have rediscovered some form.

Jan 8, 2010 at 12:11 PM | Unregistered Commentermazzatron

it's bullshit is what it is. I say if Spurs fans can get to the game then it should be played. It's just a bit of ice and snow FFS. Get over it. That goes for ALL games over the entire country. Bored of weather updates now.

Jan 8, 2010 at 12:13 PM | Unregistered Commenterthfc1882

its not just a bit of snow and ice though is it. the country has run out of grit, not just liverpool. 21,000 tonnes of the shit has gone in 3 days. if we have any more snow, shit will get real.

plus, insurance companies wont let players out onto bad pitches. or rather, the club wont let the players play if they void their insurance by playing on a bad pitch.

Jan 8, 2010 at 12:22 PM | Unregistered CommenterAlan Sugars Beard

Will Mascherano no longer be suspended for that game? do they get to play players they end up signing in the next three weeks? will they have rediscovered some form by then? I assume the answer to all three yes. Eff me, this is bullshit.

Jan 8, 2010 at 12:26 PM | Unregistered CommenterAA

rules state that if pitch is playable game must be played
the fact fans can't get there has no bearing on the fixture taking place
another lame excuse from the bin dippers, Arse have started this crap (bolton)
what next can't play 'cos it's to sunny / pollen counts to high
tossers.

Jan 8, 2010 at 12:29 PM | Unregistered Commenterme

Alan Sugars Beard - the pitch is fine. its the area outside of the ground which is "supposedly" a problem. I hope to god this game goes ahead!

Jan 8, 2010 at 12:33 PM | Unregistered Commentermazzatron

Liverpool have bottled it.

Jan 8, 2010 at 12:43 PM | Unregistered CommenterOops

It's a racing certainty that this game will be reschuled for midweek in April, when we'll meet the Scum, Liverpool, United and Chelsea in a row... and that will be the end of our top 4 push.

W*nk.

Jan 8, 2010 at 12:45 PM | Unregistered CommenterZonergem

I did ask for opinions yesterday. If it's postponed then let's make the most of it - we can win all our games between now and the end of February and they will be at least another 6 points behind. By the time they play us, it will matter less than now - could work out well?

Jan 8, 2010 at 12:47 PM | Unregistered Commenterhoopspur

I don't mind this. Extras weekends rest. Get Azza back fit. Modric needs to reach the 100% mark, needs a few more games. In the mean time, Liverpool might falter more in the coming weeks which means when we play them we might be a fair distance ahead of them.

Jan 8, 2010 at 12:54 PM | Unregistered CommenterShelf Side Warrior

Another thought. I can't make it to this one, although do go to quite a few away games. How many of you that are having a go at the request would actually be going to the game? No, I didn't think so. If the game goes ahead and you do go, then be careful out there!

Jan 8, 2010 at 12:55 PM | Unregistered Commenterhoopspur

Am I the only one who kinda sorta was looking forward to seeing our Croatians on the wings while Lennon was injured? Probably.

Jan 8, 2010 at 12:58 PM | Unregistered CommenterAA

I bet Sky are pleased...

Is there nothing left standing in this great country of ours?

Jan 8, 2010 at 1:04 PM | Unregistered Commenteralt ctrl del

You never know, Torres might have twanged his hamstrings again by the time the match is rescheduled and we'll hopefully be at full strength (Woody, Ledley, Lennon, Defoe) with possible sexy new additions to the squad bedded in and up to speed.

Jan 8, 2010 at 1:07 PM | Unregistered CommenterNext Season

mazzatron - thats not the point. the pitch is a long way from london, and the country is grinding to a halt which will hurt ticket sales and attendance wether in liverpool or melbourne.

besides, it dosnt matter that much that we dont play them this sunday. not really

Jan 8, 2010 at 1:42 PM | Unregistered CommenterAlan Sugars Beard

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/in_depth/8447023.stm this is how he country looks, we all know it, so maybe we can get on with other stuff!

Shame as I was looking forward to the distraction in the news by football!

Jan 8, 2010 at 1:45 PM | Unregistered CommenterTricky

Shame, damn shame, as we would've turned them over royally. Anyways, SPOOKILY (see what i've done there) I've just written an article about the Spurs team that beat Liverpool at the turn of the last decade. Here: http://www.caughtoffside.com/2010/01/08/the-best-tottenham-xi-of-the-last-decade-or-maybe-not/#more-24309

if anyones interested. Spooky, love your blog you cad.

Jan 8, 2010 at 1:50 PM | Unregistered CommenterGarryBacon

Alan Sugars Beard - the match is a sell out, has been for weeks. It's not going to hurt ticket sales at all. If the pitch is playable, play it. It's on the telly FFS! The season is being cut short by 2 weeks for the WC as it is. The fixture pile-up is going to be ridiculous at this rate.

Jan 8, 2010 at 1:51 PM | Unregistered CommenterNayim

W***kers........they are running scared. Thie game should go ahead, i bet its still a full house!

Tis bollocks

Jan 8, 2010 at 2:00 PM | Unregistered CommenterThe Machine

Having moved to Canada last year I find this whole situation laughable and pathetic by comparison. I know this country is more suited to the conditions than back home in the UK but they should have been prepared for this after the snow debacle in February last year. ALL sports continue to proceed here even if we get three feet of snow in one night.

I'm annoyed, I think Liverpool will be stronger by the time we replay them but like some of you said, I guess we will be too. So it's probably just frustration rather than annoyance.

Jan 8, 2010 at 2:03 PM | Unregistered CommenterCanada Yid

I must say that you british (well, some of you anyway) are a bunch of pussies when it comes to a little bit of snow and cold weather. I remember Chelsea going to Tromsø (E-cup in Norway in the 90s); Ruud Gullit cried his eyes out because he had to play in snowy conditions, and I laughed my ass off.
Yes, I'm aware that you're not used to this sort of weather... But come on FFS! Grow a pair... I'll get really pissed if this game is postponed, and will of course accuse Liverpool (fucking wankers that they are) for all sorts of conspiracies.

Jan 8, 2010 at 2:04 PM | Unregistered CommenterBalls of ice

nayim - refunds. no TV revenue. beer sales. local pubs. the economy. the country. the world. the universe. vanessa phelps.

i dont really care, i just think the ice and snow are quite serious concerns. and instead of arsenal calling it off when the bolton lads were on the M1, they gavea bit of notice.

no biggy, homes

Jan 8, 2010 at 2:05 PM | Unregistered CommenterAlan Sugars Beard

The show must go on.

Airy fairy health and safety bullshit!

Jan 8, 2010 at 2:06 PM | Unregistered CommenterTMWNN

'no biggy' ? Are you some sort of cu*t?

It's going to ruin thousands of fans' weekend. Can't believe people are so blasé about it.

Have all the trains been cancelled? Have all the roads been closed? If the answers are both no, the game should go ahead. If you've got a ticket and don't want to risk the elements, then too fucking bad.

Jan 8, 2010 at 2:16 PM | Unregistered CommenterTMWNN

I agree, the game should go ahead if the pitch is playable.

However, this was clearly our trickiest January fixture, so presuming the match won't be re-scheduled to February at least, we should now be looking to win our next 4 fixtures against Hull, Leeds, Fulham and Birmingham and begin 2010 in the way we finished 2009!

...and im sure Torres is due another injury in all this cold weather!!

Jan 8, 2010 at 2:21 PM | Unregistered Commenterpez

y'see...this is what happens when the country is run by a bunch of health & saftey bureaucrats!

Jan 8, 2010 at 2:29 PM | Unregistered CommenterJohnnyB

Alan Sugars Beard - they only have to pay refunds if the game IS postoned! Ditto with TV revenue. Actually, they don't have to pay refunds, the ticket will still be valid for the rescheduled date. The local economy will only be hit if the game IS postponed. It's in no ones interest to stop the game going ahead other than Rafa and the SKY4. As said, if fans don't fancy the journey don't go. They don't call games off just because fans don't fancy travelling in the rain of because the tubes are minging in the summer. Why aren't the club staff/fans out clearing the pavements if they are that concerned?? If the trains are running, motorways open and the pitch is playable, there really can be no cuase for postponing a game.

Jan 8, 2010 at 2:40 PM | Unregistered CommenterNayim

@me - No, the rule doesn't state that which is why both Carling Cup semi-finals were called off in the week. Both pitches were playable, a fact confirmed by Manchester City & Blackburn, but the conditions outside the ground represented a serious danger to supporters.

Jan 8, 2010 at 2:41 PM | Unregistered CommenterChazza

@Chazza

What is regarded as "serious danger" to the supporters?

Jan 8, 2010 at 2:47 PM | Unregistered CommenterBalls of ice

'Why aren't the club staff/fans out clearing the pavements if they are that concerned?'

Good point. They're always banging on about the famous Merseyside spirit, you'll never walk alone and all that - get out the boozers/council flats, grab a shovel and clear the 'surrounding area' so we can all enjoy a good game.

Jan 8, 2010 at 2:53 PM | Unregistered CommenterTMWNN

'What is regarded as "serious danger" to the supporters?'

Falling over presumably. The country has gone mad.

Jan 8, 2010 at 2:54 PM | Unregistered CommenterTMWNN

"'no biggy' ? Are you some sort of cu*t?"

pull your head out of your arse. the world does not revolve around you or football fans - if the game is called off, grow the fuck up and get on with your life.

absolute child.

Jan 8, 2010 at 3:01 PM | Unregistered CommenterAlan Sugars Beard

It's snowy and icey everywhere - why is "outside the ground" any different to outside someones house, one the walk to the car/train, the walk from the station/car park??

If I was to slip over on the pavement this evening walking home from work or wlaking to the pub, will I be able to sue the council?!?!?!?

What's the difference with me slipping over walking to a football ground?

Jan 8, 2010 at 3:04 PM | Unregistered CommenterNayim

nayim - youre right. nobodys saying just call it off for fun. If theres no salt for the roads it takes one granny to slide and the whole match gets delayed. Ive been out in it over the past few weeks and the driving on display is atrocious.

as ive said, i dont really mind either way but i can understand the caution even if some little kiddies ( not you nayim ) wont get to widdepool to see their favourite widdle team pway... diddums.

ASB, thanks for answering my original question with an emphatic 'yes'.

'If theres no salt for the roads it takes one granny to slide and the whole match gets delayed.'

Dear oh dear, no wonder the county is in the state it is with your ilk residing in it.

At least some parts of the country the have yet to be paralysed by idiocy:
'Wigan football secretary Stuart Hayton said: "The stadium manager and his team have worked tirelessly to get the surroundings in a fit state for Saturday.'

Jan 8, 2010 at 3:31 PM | Unregistered CommenterTMWNN

Alan Sugars Beard - This is a Spurs site for football fans where we discuss our 'favourite widdle team', thus there is a certain amount of disappointment if the game doesn't go ahead. Go on a council forum if you want a heated debate about the lack of the nations grit or some old bidders inability to drive in the snow - this Sunday is a massive game for 'our' team, and quite frankly you seem a bit of a knob.

why do you have to have the match this weekend? is it life-threatening? you call me a cunt, but it seems to me that faced with having to do something else this weekend, and having absolutely no power over anyone or anything, you might have to watch TV or something. Maybe have a trip to the shops.

big fucking deal mate. my heart bleeds for you, the opressed. why dont you go and shovel snow outside the stadium. youre a smart guy, you want power go and grab a fucking shovel. I mean that makes sense, instead of ranting at someone whos not especially bothered about the game, but is bothered about being called a cunt on the net.

read a book or something.

Lads forget the conspiracy theories i LIVE 10 MILES away from the bin dippers and my back and front is under 5 inches of snow for four days and its going to stay till sometime next weekend. The roads are like dancing on ice .Plus the Forecast is more Snow and Liverpool will not miss any players because if you no what I have bean saying and pissing every one of then this team along with a few others could play a one legged Donkey and win Ask Villa and UTD fans. One last word Patrick Vieira will look 21 shortly trust me on this just look at Irland this year and look at is old pictures when he lied over not playing for Ireland He is already lean for a bench warmer the Premiership is the best for turning pensioners in to youth players like Giggs Scholes Alexander Blake and a few others .We are better playing Liverskint when we are a lot more points ahead not a possible one .Coys

Keep your beard on Alan.

My original question was 'no biggy?'

If Wigan can keep their patch free from 'serious danger' (Lord, give me strength), you would have thought a major city like Liverpool - Capital of Culture 2008 - with all their resources could get a few of the jobless to clean up.

Perhaps they're so cultured up there now that a shovel or spade is beneath them.

Jan 8, 2010 at 4:11 PM | Unregistered CommenterTMWNN

In part I blame the americans, and our stupid 'special relationship, that has extended to them exporting thier favourite commodity, 'litigation'. If we didn't live in such a litigious environment these days, then it may well have gone ahead, but all these ambulance chasing fuckwits with 'where there's blame there's a claim' pile of crap means the clubs and the police don't want their arses sued. I also blame the stupid people who take advantage of the situation to get 'something for nothing' rather than accepting that accidents do happen. Consider this inconvenience your payback.

And as for 'this country going to the dogs'. What a load of balls, we just don't want to pay 30% extra every year on our council tax each year to fund the salt / storage / armada of vehicles to cope with 'extreme circumstances' which will become more prevalent as time goes by.

So it will get rescheduled, well it pisses me off a little, but you have to look for the positives. And whilst the absence of MOTD or indeed the game on sunday in an inconvenience, an early night snowed / iced in with the misses (which I am aware for some is a daunting prospect), well I'm kinda looking forwards to it. Cooking by candle-light, nice and warm inside with a fire, wihlst I nip out for a quick pint or two with some mates down the local.

Also, and more specifically as a sidenote, for those whom sleep is going to be a valuable commodity (note to all those expectant fathers this year) maybe an early night is not such a bad thing.

Anyway, finally regarding the game itself we were always going to lose to them [it's written into the Sky TV broadcast rights contract: Section D, subsection 13, clause 5b(iv) - "no non-sky top 4 team will be allowed to win against a SKY TOP 4 (tm) team if televised, even legitimate goals will be ruled out by the officials unless the SKY TOP 4 (tm) is at least two clear goals ahead at the time".] so if it get rescheduled and we don't beat them then, it's no big deal.

Right I'm off to fiddle with the fuse box. Happy days!
