Bentley, you smeghead
What was I saying yesterday about there always being a Spurs story just around the corner?
With thanks to David Bentley.
On the one hand he claims to have personal issues, but has the time to promote club nights and kick footballs into skips and while earning thousands per week fails miserably to resemble a £1M player let alone a £16M one. He's a fucking mess. I don't know him personally, so he might be the typical arrogant 'I'm the best since slice bread' egomaniac who thinks he can star on his name alone, which has been built on a fair few good performances and a shit load of hype. Or he might be insecure, hiding behind highlighted hair and Beckham comparisons unable to cope with the pressures that come with a 50k per week job. Oh what a life.
What exactly was he doing boozing days before the start of the season? Does he want us to dislike him even more? Not that everyone hates him, but it makes it tricky for the people who do want to support him and aid him towards reclaiming some of that form that saw him bag a move here in the first place.
May as well stick two fingers up at us and then throw a bag of piss in our faces. Where exactly is the dedication and determination to claw back into contention as a first teamer? Somewhere lost at the bottom of a bottle no doubt.
Any chance of selling him now are remote, especially as the main reason he's still with us is because nobody would match our asking price.
I don't want to hear another word from him. An apology for his football performances would have been preferable but I'll accept honest hard work on and off the pitch and no more hissy fits and apologetic crap.
He's not the first footballer to wrap his car around a lamp post. Luckily for him he didn't kill anyone or kill his career.
When you're at the very bottom, the only way is up.
Sort yourself out you melter.

ditto!
A stint in a cell should be enough time for him to reflect and, to coin an expression, 'get his shit together'.
As you say, lucky no one else was invovled, what a bell end!
He's had a sorry time down here. Really needs to pick himself up from this and get his life in order. Didn't like his reaction the other day when he got subbed. He's played shit for the whole of last season and hasn't shown any signs of improving. If he's got 'problems' he has get help. If he's feeling sorry for himself he needs a fucking slap.
well if you ask this guy (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=4396083), everybody goes drunk driving at least once a year so there's his free pass! not. kind of ironic this bentley stuff comes out right after i read that article. what a joke. let's hope his statement was sincere and this does in fact light a fire under his ass. driving drunk is stupid and reckless in itself. driving drunk in a porsche? what a complete moron...
spooky.........guess what ? he"s......human and in error..........
as it ever ocurred to you that he may feeling all the shit all spurs fans keep giving him
as well as anything else
stand up whos never been wrong .....there you are...........no one
this bentley thing has got out of hand ........
thankfully he will learn from drink drive rubbish
but as i say he cant blink without immediate critcism which to me looks more like a persecution of the guy
haa smeghead, aint heard that for time
Typical just when we start to hope he may start to show some form this season he does this. Give him a complete bollocking Harry fine him 2 weeks wages and stick him in the reserve team (do we still have one) until he shows he deserves to be at this great football club.
See Sarge Wilson on how to be professional in the face of REAL "problems".
See Gomes on how to come back from a torrid time.
Bentley doesn't appear to have the character of either of the above. I'd love him to prove me wrong, but I'm highly doubtful he ever will.
Hopefully this will make him pull his finger out of his ass, i think we shouldnt judge him, let him regain the trust and respect of the fans, but harry needs to work his magic and big the poor chap out of his shell and back into firing form.
Go easy on him lads and lasses
COYS
he has alot of problems especially now, he will have to do his very best to get even close to the team now. There probaly more to come out of the story im sure, he has given his haters even more ammo now for them to boo him, but at the end of the day the only person that can turn it around is himself.
Billio - as admirable as your comments are, and as much as I'd normally agree with such sentiment, I can't help but feel that kinda mentality will just compound Bentley's problems.
He needs a foot up his arse, and to man the fuck up, get his head down, and let his actions speak for him.
Got to say i'm a littloe disappointed Harry hasn't got to grips with him and sorted him out, he clearly has problems, thought Harry's strengths were his man management skills.
Harry if you dont sort him out its going to be £16 mil down the shitter.
Aaargh! Watch the vultures circle...
While I am unable to support drink driving in any capacity, there have also been whispers about Bentley's outstanding effort and attitude in pre season training to report.
Lets be real about his situation for a moment; anyone of us would feel hacked off at thier career being reduced to a handful of cameo appearences. We all know form takes confidence and confidence comes from a run of games. Bentley has something real to offer THFC, and it is as much up to the club as it is the player to get that out of him. The form that made us hold our breaths until he signed was down to his genuine ability and some outstanding performances at Blackburn. Yes, Lennon's raised his game, and Yes, Bentley is long overdue to get back in his groove, but jumping on the beat Bentley bandwagon won't encourage that.
He's made a stupid mistake.
In fact, he's made several.
But that shouldn't condemn him to life at the bottom of a bottle.
It is hard to support a player that preneially disappoints us, but isn't there a similarity there though with supporting spurs?
Exactly Billiospur. He's not the first and he certainly won't be the last Spurs footballer to have been ruined at the hands of his own 'fans'. The best thing he can do is get out as quickly as possible as there is no changing the moronic opinions of some people. He could have been a useful player so it's a shame but small people seem to find the need to drag everyone else down with them. Obviously I'm talking purely about football here, not condoning the drink driving which is idiotic in the extreme.
get rid of this no talent idiot, sell him to villa plus cash and get ashley young in return.
Firstly let me say I am not his biggest fan but I don't care whether its David Bently, Luka Modric or Ledley King, my opinion will still remain the same that with the new season only a stones throw away what the effing hell was he doing out drinking!!! Yes he is human who just happens to play football professionally so yes may have issues both you and everyone else has, but he has to behave responsibly as he is in the public eye and on thousands and thousands of pounds a week.
David, sort yourself out man, not for us or the supporters including myself that want you to succeed but for yourself!!!!
kay bee .....he needs a new angle on his football world and i think he needs to talk with experience people who have been there and can understand his character and mature etc......a proper kick up the arse is proper conditioning to deal with whats happening ......pysychology of sportsmen etc.......some of us have had a lot more to deal with in life but it looks like a few years is needed in his head still....
David Bentley has been on the sauce for a long time now. Very sad, but very true.
When he joined my beloved team I thought it was a great buy. But every time I see him around town he can hardly see straight.
He needs a move. For himself more than anyone. Somewhere far away from London.
Bentley is probably the largest enigma of a player we have seen down the lane in years. Agreed he does need to 'Man the fuck up' but he needs some form of personal boost. Albeit I dont like him very much, the fact remains he is a man in turmoil and has some form of deep psycological issues. Maybe some one-to-one coaching with 'Arry might well give him the boost he needs, then (sparingly) give him a bit part until he starts to get some form, then maybe he might get back up to the Blackburn form........ who knows.
CY.
This is the proverbial nail in the coffin for his time at Spurs. After Ledley King's last spat with the law Redknapp publicly stated what he thought professional footballers drinking.
I think this will be good for him. As you point out the only way is up from here. You never know, in a years time, whatever problems hes got mentally might have been sorted and he might have grown up a bit. His footballing talent will hopefully be waiting for him when/if that time comes. Until then, its best for the fans to just let him be and be patient. You have to be a mentally retarded to drive drunk and this might be the wake up call he needs to realise that he needs to focus on getting better rather than football at the moment.
I think the problem with this guy is he cant control himself whilst around his friends who appear to lead him astray!!
When at the scum Mr Kiddy Fidler saw the potential in him, but Bently was to busy getting pissed with his mates and gambling.
He then goes to Blackburn where he had none of these people around him, he got his head down concentrated on his football and improved so dramatically it earnt him a move to Spurs.
When back at spurs hooked up with his old mates and gone of the rails again.
This guy is earning a fucking shit load of money and is disrespecting our club !!! He needs to nuckle down and earn his money & the right to wear the shirt!!!!!
Totally dig what you say, Lordgandisstheyid. I do think they're a large part of the problem.
And again, Billio, you talk plenty of sense. I guess Bentley is under exactly the right sort of manager if he does need the softly-softly, arm round the shoulder kind of man management.
Do we think Redknapp has much patience left with him , though?
Billo, whilst I appreciate a voice of calm. There's human error, and then there's drink driving. They are not the same, they are not even on the same songsheet. One has the capacity to end in say a typo, or to belive someone's telling the truth whilst telling porkies, the other has the capacity to injury, maim and kill (and no I'm not being over melodramatic, I happen to have had a friend injured by a drink driver, and have a mate who had one of his cousins killed). It was only luck (and not judgement) that no-one else was injured.
Drink driving is drink driving and football doesn't enter into it, neither does an 'error of judgement'. It is the casual lumping together of a lack of common sense with, and lets be honest, illegal actions with potentiually lethal ramifications that is lessening the importance of such a stupid thing to do.
I appreciate I may have an extreme view based upon my expereinces. But if you want to lump in the fact that Bentley is an alleged professional footballer, then the fact that he is drinking prior to the build up of the first weekend of competitive play is un-professional. Most people would be sacked for being unprofessional in their work, and some would be 'let go' as a result of the 'hopefully inevitable' driving ban.
tricky...... i agree the timing is wrong a few days from our opening game and drink driving is a complete no.......not even one drink etc for the obvious tragedy which occurs by a lack of self discilpine or common sense (taxi)when it matters .....its the rest of the media circus which is not needed.......hopefully redknapp will sort him in a way which can make it clear how to move ahead in a tough season and sort his conduct out personally and to the club etc
bentley does love playing for spurs so whatever the issues are they need to resolve and move on
While no one is condoning drink driving in any shape or form, lets face it the knives have been out for Bentley well before this happened, I think anyone representing our club should be given support the constant criticism can not be of any possible help to a player and could be a cause of him going off the rails, not on a football front but on a personal level I have been in a dark place and its not nice, hope he has some true friends around him lets face it he was a decent player at Blackburn and that doesnt just disappear. Lets get behind him and maybe he can work hard and recapture his form. please guys start to get behind all our players, this is what supporters do. COYS
To err is human. To forgive is divine.
Is one the forgiving type? After how many errors? Mental strength can in part be built, but alot of it is nurtured through your early life. Perhaps I blame DB5's parents for their shoddy approach to his upbringing? Perhaps I blame myself for believeing there is in each of our players, the will and desire to bring glory back to our club, even if for the leat part to bring it for themselves.
Nevermind the crashing of the car (inevitable) the being 3 times over the limit (just stupid)it was 3 o'clock in the fucking morning, 3 days before the football season kicks off, what the fuck is he doing out drinking anyhow?
This chap has issues and needs counselling he has talent but his friends are the problem he needs true friends not hangers on that will lead him astray, lets get him the help he needs and lets get the player we signed from Blackburn that looked pretty useful at the time.
I really did want him to succeed. I still do. After a 43 yard dipping volley against you-know-who, I thought things were shaping up for the lad. I'd hoped.
Thirteen months after him signing we have seen very little evidence of him shaping up to be half the player he was at Blackburn.
Drink driving - not forgivable.
A dip in form - forgivable (So long as he put's the work in, both on and off the pitch)
If he's got issues it's up to him to sort them out. But unfortunately, time, patience and support is running out for him.
The thing is that if he is willing then it is easy to sort it out. The process will be difficult and I've seen it first hand. But for most of us, we all have to make and live by our own decisons and so he's made a bad one, the ball is truely in his court as to what he wants to do about it next.
And I get your point Billo, the knives were out before he proved what a tool he was. And yes this componds it. But the actions and the event are unfortuantely inseperable on this occasion. HIs unprofessionalism shows itself on the pitch as well as off it.
Give him to me for a month and I can gurantee that I'd have him either sorted out for good, or can at least provide a little perspective. I might even be able to help with his composure on the ball and earlier dcison making which is what enabled him to be a better crosser.
FFS, give him to anyone but the myriad of 'hanger ons' who are as much responsible for his decline from what I can tell in encouraging him to be anything other than the model professional.
Believe me, as one who has been to one too many funerals in the last couple of years, have a mate who's mum has operable cancer, know someone through work who has terminal C (and is only mid 40's with family) etc, etc, this guy doesn't need an arm round the shoulder. That has been tried already, and I have seen what happens when it fails first hand with a friend / work colleague who ended up in the priory last year a couple of times. There is a spiral to self-loathing and self pity and it becomes worse if you have someone who thrive's on the ego.
He needs a reality check and a sense of proportionality, and yes he needs support from his family and someone willing to tell him the truth because they don't have any interests in him not succeeding.
Anyone got Harry's number?
Tricky, as you said his problems need perspective and when you rightly point out people with real problems, but it is also an individuals view and sometimes people seek comfort in the bottle or drugs these people can be helped and with a little more investment in David he can be sorted out and can become the player with the promise, from what I can tell it is these so called friends who have to answer plus he was finding it hard to live up to his own hype but sticking the boot in while his down is a no no. I do not hear many people condemning Jermain Defoe for his driving charges and he is going to sue the police due to a human error that was not corrected on a computer not be judge or jury but unless he gets disqualification quashed do not think he should sue police for doing their job
If this had happened to a player we love, would he get so much abuse? Probably not, not that it's a reason to forgive but I guess Bentley just cant inspire himself to do anything positive. He's a complete wally who seems to be attracting problems for himself.
on a humorous note............
Good evening, Officer. Isn't it lovely out tonight.
Just as a footnote, I've had one or two point out to me that he he's only getting stick because he had such a poor season with us. And why isn't Defoe getting abused in the same way.
When your luck is down you can quite easily find more bad luck to bury yourself under. David doesn't help himself, even if this was a stupid error on his part (to drink and drive) he still did it.
I want the bloke to succeed for us big time. Whether he's rated by Harry or has the support of our manager, I don't know and it might be way he's struggling to find form.
Bentley is a joke. Things go wrong and he tries to drown his sorrows. He could easily have rammed into someone and killed him/her. Idiot. The police should just charge him hard and send him to jail for a few months. In some countries, you might even be caned for deliberately engaging in such dangerous behavior. This idiot has enough money to take a cab home, hasnt' he?
He's a twat for getting himself arrested days before we play Liverpool. He wont be anywhere near the first team now.
Oh dear, the boy has turned into a bit of a shit magnet, cue the Adams family on Sky offering guidance. I thought that the boy's confidence was shot, not his glass of choice. Harry was meant to be getting on top of this 'drinking culture', we've got Begbie beating up his old fella after a night on the lash, Ledley fighting with bouncers and now DB tying a yellow Porsche round the old Oak tree. Added to those three, we have JD the serial motoring offender suing Essex plod and Harry still under investigation for tax evasion by City plod.. Sheeit Joey Barton looks like Mother Theresa compared to our lot lately.
Without getting into the morals of it (on Tricky's side) a lot could depend on how the tabloids run with this. The perception of drink driving, since Tony Adams totaled his car, has gone from being laddish rule breaking to murderous recklessness and Bentley is a figure a lot of people have loved to hate for a long time. By the weekend he could be a public hate figure a la Barton, jeered by home and away fans alike, unplayable and unsellable. For his sake hopefully it blows over just as Hutton's antics did and he can turn the corner as his official statement said he would.
Typical Yid. Complete scumbag. Surprise surprise you're all defending him.
Bentley!?!?!?! Hes more like a fuckin skoda!
chelsea13yocasual: "Typical Yid. Complete scumbag. Surprise surprise you're all defending him."
He was on his way to pick my mum up from her shoplifting expedition.
Yes. That compares to what is essentially attempted murder don't it petal. Amazing the lengths you will go to to distract from the scum on your team.
Bentley isn't scum. He's just an idiot. Unlike the scum in the stands of Stamford Bridge with their Nazi saluting. Bet you're a racist, right? Love a bit of Jew hating you fucking cunt?
Bloody hell Oops. Didn;t know you had it in you mate.
Sorry Billio but as much as i like the voice of reason i cant agree with you on this one. Everyone can make mistakes but he doesn't need the souft touch approach but the rude awakening. Hope he got that last night , he does a job all of us envy him for, the kind of job little kids dream about , gets payed ridiculous amounts of money and doesn't even realise that just a few days before the start of the season he d better stay sober or at least stay away from the steering wheel when boozing? He must have been pretty wasted if he totalled his car ...
He got lucky that he didn't take somebody with him but if he totals the car of someones mom or kid ... I like a drink as much as the next guy but i don't take the weel after , i used to but have seen far too many around me going out on a bang because of it ...
I ve been playing for whole my life but haven't been gifted with his skill and talent but even i take care of myself the days before the game , hell i know a lot of youngsters that do the same in our club, because above all i want to win and perform. Not for the few pounds that will earn me but for the selfrespect, pride , love of the game and for my team mates ...
And he does not have the right to be forgiven , not yet ... but he can earn it.
Well done Mr Chav, nice to see a representative from the bridge skimming through the responses and ignoring it all. What part of 'he needs to sort himself out' or 'deserves a stint in the cells' is defending him? Or indeed pointing out that he was a lucky ba*d not to have hurt or killed someone else?
It's the 'one size fits all, automatic assumption that you can interpret what you like out of the above' that would allow an idiot to skim the BNP manifesto and think, 'hmm that's a good idea'.
Just for the record, yes you are a tool. And if you want that reminder please feel free to come back again.
well belgian spur ..as you have a responsibilty in football environment i would agree he could do with get his prioritys in order ,he plays football for a great club like spurs, the love of the game etc.a lot of money is also there ,i understand that some sort of personal management for young footballers is possible ......you cant condone his actions only address them ....influence his mindset.......its been commented he has friends who steer him into
considering the wrong things to do etc.....if so then he needs to set some personal rules reset as he has a high profile
the deal is he has to as you pointed show some postives.........a perspective.?.......compared to other footballers in the past whowere far worse with alcohol problems etc ..
also chelsea casual should go back under the rock that he crawled out from.......!
