Does Bill Simmons still 'support' Tottenham?
Friday, May 29, 2009 at 4:08PM Out of the blue, I've just had one of those blasts from the past moments. Back in the summer of 2006, ESPN columnist Bill Simmons began his search for a EPL club to support. Staggeringly, he chose Tottenham (just clicky on this to read his concluding notes) probably inspired by one of his readers who suggested, "If you want a team that will absolutely crush your spirit, you must support Spurs". Simmons obviously loves the eternal struggle of an underdog and the romance of us being named after a Shakespearian character.
Not too sure what happened after this. I was expecting weekly updates during the season as he followed us on another transitional mess. I think in the end I give us much attention to it as he did to us.
I guess it was all just a summer fling, a flirtation with limey football that came to nothing much. In fact, I'm certain that he later changed his mind and regretted his decision citing that he should have chosen Newcastle United instead. Yep, Newcastle. He knows his shit does Bill.
Bill, if you read this may I suggest Chelsea as your next port of call?

Henry Percy aka 'Hotspur' is a character from history written about by Shakespear ffs. Fly-by-night, read a book about the team, picked a name out of the hat, motherfuckers are not the kind of supporters needed by our club. Those type of fuckers should apply over at the 'Emma Freuds' stadium.
As a Yank who was supporting Spurs for a few years (2001) before Mr. Simmons, I was interested to see what he would do after he announced his support. Sadly, "nothing" seems to be the answer. I actually emailed him once to see what his thoughts were on last year's CC victory and the later collapse, Got no reply. Disappointing, as I think he is one of the more entertaining writers for ESPN.

Yeah, I followed the link and read what the turkey wrote Spooks, and my comment was aimed at him. If he's "one of the more entertaining writers at ESPN" as SSG says then 'soccer' is fucked in the US. Wanker should stick to writing about shit he has some understanding of.
Simmons never really had an interest. Transparent article writing for the sake of it. Look at me I'm American and I'm talking about soccer bullshit. The fact he then decided that he thought himself to be more of a Newcastle fan because of their loud fans just about sums it all up.

I sent him an e-mail following the 2006 season regarding his first foray into the EPL with Spurs and he admitted that he did not even make it through half of the season. Summer fling at best.
I remember this and thought the whole process was decent light reading but cant believe anyone would think he would follow through and actually pay attention to what we did over here. I guess the moment he worked out how much of a let down we are he thought about jumping ship. Shocked he didn't pick Arsenal.
He's a baseball lover is he not? Good on him for trying and its amusing he ended up choosing Spurs. Can't work out if that's some form of backhanded compliment though.
