The aftermath of the Berbatov Saga

If you missed the introductory first part, you can read it here.

Tapestry Part II

The Aftermath of the Berbatov Saga

Dear Mr Levy,

When people throw superlatives around concerning our bank balance, the re-development of the proposed new stadium and the consistent supply of top quality club DVD releases, I always respond in the same composed manner. I laugh, slap the naïve fool in the face, and state two words: Dimitar Berbatov.

Yes, yes. Old news. Been here before. Blah blah. But this serves a purpose as a stern reminder that there is simply no excuse for a repeat showing this summer.

The Bulgarian was the catalyst in the downfall of Martin Jol and in no uncertain terms the protagonist that helped aid your misguided stand against Ferguson and Manchester United which proved to be several nails in the coffin of Juande Ramos. Berbatov was a year into his 'I want to leave and join Man Utd' sulk, and rather than just sell him the second the season ended, you built a moat around White Hart Lane to warn off attacks that was about an inch deep. There was simply no defence in place for the prolonged attack that followed, which was more cold war than in the trenches. All Ferguson did was wait until the final day of the window, when you inexplicably accepted a transfer bid from Manchester City which was Berbatov's passport to fly up to Old Trafford. Which he did. Illegally or not, the player agreed terms with United. You know this. We all know this. Which meant that you either had to reject Utd's bid to spite Utd and Berbatov - and then deal with the consequences of a player that doesn't want to be at the club or you accepted it but only if they topped it up by an extra few million quid.

So in the end, we sold him to the team that had spent an age tapping him up, even though arguably, he had already made up his mind a season into his Spurs contract that he wanted to leave, sacked Martin Jol, put up with Berbatov's continued sulks/strikes/mood swings, then sell him to Utd in a last gasp deal in the final moments before the window closed. And for what exactly? £5M more than United wanted to pay?

Then followed your assault on the injustice of it all, with a threat here and a PR letter there. Placing aside your fit of rage over how things concluded, you topped it off by agreeing the signing of Frazier Campbell on loan. So, we lose our talisman. We don’t quite replace him. And then we get a youth player in as a replacement from the club that have just taken away the only world class player we had (at the time).

That's a little bit like finding out your supermodel girlfriend doesn't love you anymore, you then get dumped after a long bout of pretence that she won't leave as you fool yourself into believing you can make her stay even though she's made you look like a complete dick, and when she does finally leave her new boyfriend hands you a copy of Razzle and tells you, "You're be just fine with this mate".

Ferguson, mugged us off. And what did we do with the money? We re-signed Robbie Keane in the Jan window. Because there was no time left to replace the departing Bulgarian in the summer one. Prior to all this, we paid £14M for Roman Pavlyuchenko but wouldn't pay Zenit the £20M they wanted for Arshavin. Both having already played the best part of the Russian league season and the European Championships in the summer - there were obvious questions about what type of impact they would have. The Arshavin deal never went through, and thank God, because he looks really really uncomfortable out of position on the left for Arsenal. And as for Pav? He's scored a few, but he doesn't have the look of a world class player. It's like we've signed the Russian Bobby Zamora who keeps trying to re-enact the video to Radioheads Just. GET UP FROM THE FLOOR AND STOP FEELING SORRY FOR YOURSELF FFS!

So, we end up with a strike-force of Bent, Pav and Campbell. We sign Bentley who is meant to supply the crosses for a target man, except we don't actually have anyone capable of fulfilling that role. And Bentley inexplicably forgets how to take a set-piece which renders him completely redundant unless confronted with a skip. Then in the January window we re-sign Defoe (Keane to follow) and have two players that have never quite worked playing up front together.

In the aftermath of the Berbatov saga, we are left weakened and desperate. Regardless of the self-inflicted implosion by Ramos regarding tactics and selection, we had three strikers that sort of came together by accident and ironically all three could well be departing this summer. Campbell back to Utd. Bent will be sold at a loss and how we plan to reclaim any of the £14M spent on Roman is going to be a hoot to watch.

Add to the mix David Bentley who hasn’t started a game for months, who seems to be superglued to the bench and has been cited by Harry as not really fitting into his team selection. Mark Hughes, got any spare change, guv? Anyone would think that if he played a certain amount of games we'd have to pay Blackburn more money. If Harry doesn’t fancy him, and he's sold on, then that's another transfer loss deficit. We've already re-signed Chimbonda that is arguably akin to taking out the rubbish and then bringing it back in again. It's fucking pointless. Leave it outside for Gods sake! It's where it belongs.

Daniel, we simply need to be spot on this summer. There is no Comolli. I'm sure there's still a scouting system in place. We all know Harry likes his random players with unpronounceable names, but he does strike gold more often than not. Bringing Defoe back was inspired, if obvious, and actually ridiculous all things considered. But it will work. Keane coming back was embarrassing for all concerned - him, Liverpool and us. He's tainted at the moment but will no doubt reclaim some of that intensity. Even his hand waving complaints seem limp wristed.

We need to reclaim some composure. More players like Wilson Palacios are required. Players that improve the side with immediate impact. No more soap opera dramatics and enforced donations to the Tottenham Foundation. There is no room for complacency. No room for unwanted back page headlines. Let the likes of City dominate the exclusives as they chase £100M players, while we pluck out quality that goes towards building a team rather than a set of individuals. We need to be direct and avoid long boring played out in the public domain transfer tussles. Get in there, sign them up for a competitive price, and sit there with a smug grin on your face when they repay us on the pitch.

And please, let's not be talking about 'The aftermath of the Modric saga' this time next year.

To follow in Parts II and IV:

  • David Bentley, Jenas and The Opus
  • Harry Redknapp

Regards,

S

totally agree sir. naturally i'm happy since the turn around after ramos but how anyone could have managed to fuck up the team we had going with lovely martin jol is beyond me. and if we sell modric, that's it, i'm becoming an inuit.

have to agree with you on your article.what hasnt been mentioned by anybody is what arrys a team has done.gomez, dawson ,essoto and lennon all under performed so much so that if the first 3 left there would be sighs of relief at spurs.jol couldnt improve these the players while he was there.neither ramos..the above players today have doubled or tripled their value under arry.the ones that havent that includes bentley and jenas are lost causes.bent i feel sorry for.leading scorer but his style is as boreing as watching paint dry.i have a feeling that next season will be the season ,that to be a spurs supporte we will have much to cheer with arry(bless him)

Very well said, although I wouldn't lay the blame entirely at Levy's feet. He backed Comolli - this was his fundamental error. Let's just hope he backs Harry, a guy who can spot a decent footballer, in the same way.

No one has taken the debacle as sqaurely on the chin as Levy. I think he realises what an idiot everything made him look like. He made a bold move in sacking Ramos and bringing in Redknapp. I think he needs congratulating for that.

I'm looking forward to seeing who these 3 players are that Harry wants to bring in. If it were me, I'd do the following:

Out : Bent, Bentley, Hutton, Pav
In : Young, Johnson, Milito, (keep Campbell)

May 18, 2009 at 1:55 PM | Unregistered CommenterPaulP

Shift Pav, Bent, Bentley, Zakora, Jenas and Chimbo (should get around £40-45m for that little lot I reckon), bring in an Irelandesque central midfielder and a target man in the style of (but realistically not as good as) Berb/ Kanoute and we have ourselves a damn fine team hopefully without the need for yet another transitional season. Add into the mix cover for Palacios and an attacking midfielder to step in for Lennon/ Modric when required and the squad is complete. Obika can step up as fourth striker and Bale is still young enough to put this season behind him and regain some of that pre-injury promise.
The defence has proved itself more than good enough and has strength in depth. Our keepers are excellent.

Having said that we'll probably sell Lennon to Liverpool, swap Modric for Mutari and sign Downing and Kenwyn Jones.

May 18, 2009 at 2:10 PM | Unregistered CommenterNext Season

players to go: Hudd top of the list, bentley unfortunately cos i believe the guy is a true yid, Bent probably, cos he aint spurs, Keane cos unless i've missed something he doesn't look a player without the Bulgarian, Hutton cos he's trash, not a bad player perhaps but simple trash. Pav, unfortunately a touch of the egyptian about him, needs to change his attitude. Bring in a few new players that Harry feels he can work with, sound attitude, hard working and level headed. Zokora Jenas O'hara all quality squad players who won't let us down. Gomes Ekotto Woody King Wilson Modric Lennon And Defoe and another 3 should be starting 11. GOD bless our 'Arry for bringing some sense and standards back to the team. Here's looking forward to the new season, lol, again for the 42nd year in a row.

no one realy knew what was going to happen as spurs did a meltdown as a sequence of changes from jol etc

if jol had remained berba and keane would have left anyway ......i think the lesson is obvious
the EPL does not allow wholesale changes to a team

no room for inconsistency,we lost to hull, west brom, newcastle and middlesbourough away
who are now looking to relegate,so away form ?

it seems we have been reset with redknapp

Why does everyone keep slagging off Jenas? Does anyone actually watch spurs or are the stupid d1ckheads writing these comments just typical sofa fans with big mouths. Jenas has been top class this season and is always missed when he is out of the team. He has played so well in fact that he has kept Bentley, Zokora, Huddlestone, O'Hara, Taarabt out of the team. Time after time, manager after manager who is on the team sheet... thats right, our man Mr J Jenas. That is because he is a grafter and does the work that everyone misses. This season he has been bombing up and down, granted sometimes he is a little flat footed but when he gets on his bike he is class, can no1 remember the 4-4 with arsenal when he picked it up, drove in and curled a left footed beauty in.

All in all if you dont know your stuff, stop leaving stupid comments. Jenas and Placios formed an excellent partnership so far and if Modric is content playing left wing i cant see much happening this Jan. Only possible transfer has to be another LM and then Modric and Jenas would have to battle it out depending on opponent.

One thing is for sure that Robbie Keane does not need time, He was an average player made to look good by a freakishly good bulgarian. He left so Robbie went crying to his "childhood" fantasy team, liverpool where everyone suddenly realised he is awful. HE CANT HEADER, HE CANT RUN AT DEFENDERS, HE HAS NO PACE, HE GETS PUSHED OFF EVERYTHING, HE MOANS LIKE A LITTLE GIRL OVER HIS OWN MISTAKES, HE TRIES THINGS THAT DONT COME OFF and all in all he is a waste of our time. Get rid of him AND pav in the summer. Atleast Bent has scored the goals, if it werent for Bent we wouldnt be anywhere near 8th let alone pushin for europe, u might want to remember that!!!!

OH and Ekotto needs a special shout, doesnt have the best long ball but dam he has been quality a left back. vital interceptions and his tracking back/tackling and ability to make room is second to none.

Jones and Downing in this summer, not going to set the world alight but creates far greater sense of balance.

Levys handling of the berba transfer was a shambles. The DOF system ate it self I'm afraid. I think going back to basics has worked. Its a little bit more simple and for the moment its working so as long as he backs the coach I guess the pressure is on Harry to sign the right players. Cant be blaming Levy. Unless he sanctions a £20M bid for Jones.

I don't think we had any choice in the Berbatov saga, the real debacle was leaving it to the last day so we ended up with Fraizer. Berba was poisonous in the dressing room and could easily have threatened to sulk through an entire season, refuse to renew his contract, and then be sold for far less than the amount we got for him; it would've been worth it if Ramos could've motivated him to play for one more season and we managed to make the CL, but clearly this season was meant to be a transitional season with so many new players and we wouldn't have gone further than top 6 anyways (and if Ramos stayed, no further than midtable - if Berba leaving was the catalyst behind his sacking and Harry's appointment, then I'm quite pleased he left). Villa has been praised for holding on to Barry, yet he hasn't been better than Petrov this season, they haven't improved in league position at all, and now he'll go this summer for 8 million rather than 20.

I certainly won't mind if we ship out Pav and Bentley for a Berbatov-type striker, maybe not as classy but will help Keane regain his form and benefit Defoe, who seems much improved after his stint at Pompey, so I don't mind the extra we paid for him that much. I would hesitate to ship out Bent this summer - being outscored by only 5 other strikers despite little confidence, being in and out of the team, and playing in a style completely unsuited to him isn't easy to do. He's no flop and doesn't deserve to be considered a poor player.

The real test will be hanging on to Modric and Lennon this summer. Levy and Harry don't have to sell since both are on long contracts, unlike Berba last year (unless they sulk and demand moves) - if we do sell then it's definitely their fault for letting them go. Even if they offer silly money, we have a large squad and could raise funds with our fringe players.

May 18, 2009 at 3:58 PM | Unregistered CommenterDavey

agree 95% of what jack says. only doubt/difference is about JJ being absolutely top class player. his work rate effort commitment is 110% and until wilson arrived he was only player making anything like a tackle in midfield. also think he suffered a lot under jol in being the one always shifted out wide or backwards to suit other players. Perhaps with wilson beside him he can go onto forge a genuine partnership in a settled team. he does deserve the chance and Hudd couldn't lace his boots,

May 18, 2009 at 6:52 PM | Unregistered Commentertonym

Personally, I don't thibnk we need to add alot of new faces, but we do need to discard plenty.
Loan out Gunter, Bale, Taarabt
Sell Bent, Bently, Jenas, Zokora, O'Hara, Rocha, Chimbonda. i also like to see Keane go (wont happen though)
Buy CM ( Muntari/Veloso) LW (Capel/Bastos) STK (Zigic/Carew) CB (Distin/Upson)
I believe with the above occuring this would leave us with a balanced squad, with a good mix of youth and experience. With only havin 3 out & out CM we could play Modric on the left or centre allowing us to mix it up.
Gio could also come in for Lennon when required.
Also, with the above sales, would'nt see us outlay too much. Maybe even leaving 'Arry to unearth a couple of those rough diamonds he's famous for.

a suitable case for treatment?liverpool buy keane for 20mil(12mil to much)whoever decided to buy him for pool its their problem.that we bought him back for 14mil?,its our problem.that we made him captain is our problem.that a player that cant think for himself is makeing decisions for other players is a joke(a sick one)that roman was subbed was a natural decision but did keane do any better.he couldnt control the ball and laughed.using arrys wife as a example ,if she played alongside berba she also would score goals.cannot believe its arrys choice to play keane.i have too much respect of arrys knowhow to believe he sees something there that we dont.campbell could be bought for about 5mil.i.a good football brain, skill and vision.he will get nowhere at untd as they have such depth.as i wrote to buy keane back,to make him captain,to play him makes him teflon.whoever did these things is a suitable case for treatment.

its time for the tony awards.first arry who performed the great escape yet again.this time on a bigger stage.your new name is arry houdini.second roy of fulham .yes cinderella will come to the ball.well done.third (you may not like this)wenger with leaky defence and miss fireing forwards, proved his quality.then everton, for great manager.then rednose for doing it again.you may love him or hate him ,but he does achieve.then chelsea with the revolving door at the entrance.too many managers ,but owner with no patience.who will not be second best.last sad note palacious horror story.while people are travelling across europe to get to uk.legally or not.wilson palacious and his family should be offered uk citizenship as they are in real danger.one deserving case.

sid is arsenal fan of many years.im spurs fan of many years.we were talking about barca v man u and who would win.we both agreed barca.what a win excluding ronaldo and his quarter of hour of fame, there was only one team in it.their football is light years ahead of ours.the spanish teams seemed so great but didnt always deliver.the fallacy of the premiership being the greatest league in the world is laid to rest.where is the british messi?gerrard in my opinion is the best we have ,and would get in any team in the world ,but messi wow.maybe 90mph football is great for thrills ,but skill and time to think gets left behind.

do you like a bet?youll get great odds.keane failed at pool and came back at reduced price.he still looks out of place at spurs.berba has had similar time at untd.scoreing in every 3rd game on average.not setting manchester alight with his skills.thats 30 mil warming the bench.red nose is a impatient man as beckham can tell you.where can he cut his losses by not too much .sell him back to spurs.who else is going to stump up 20 odd mill, with no guarantee of a significant return.batman and robin lethal, apart another story.rebrov(stop going white)with shevy lethal ,apart help.its worth a punt.

2+2 should make 4.in football it isnt a exact science.zokora is going to saville.spurs give compensation in place of supposed illegal approach for ramos.(ive always believed there was illegal approach but without levys permission.now zokora could be sold to many clubs,as hes 100% for effort.why seville.perhaps capel is going in the opposite direction?lets hope 2+2 does make 4.

1 transfer month is july ,not june,so dont get desperate.2 arry said gomez was our best player over the season,so nobody is going to replace him.3arry said roman will still be a spurs player in the new season.its a spring and summer sale at spurs.i dont think so many players have ever been put up for sale.expect a new stronger spurs.if their not up there with the top 4 it will be a failed season again.

Jun 17, 2009 at 1:04 PM | Unregistered Commentertony

darren bent the enigma?scores double figures in a season, but fans dont take to him.hasnt got the aggression of a center forward.maybe he isnt one.playing alongside crouch or torres ,i think he would be much more popular than at present.if crouch came to spurs(another ex spur returning)with darren alongsideit could be a lethal strike force.yes it would create problems for keane and defoe.one of them would go.i would keep defoe as he is a match winner.food for thought.

question i wanted to ask for ages.17 mil?for david bentley.cant dribble, havent seen him head a ball.a player that on rare occasions can score unbelievable goals.for this money should be able to do all the things he cant.value today 5 mil.played out of position fans cry.skill doesnt fly out the window when you change one wing for the other.cliff jones and terry medwin often changed wings dureing a game with great success.arry couldnt improve him.its sad over the last few years how much money has been wasted.one lesson for mr levy never take arsenal cast offs ,whether as players or admin ,we always lose.

could it be bye, bye levy, disastarous appointment of comolli(we are still suffering the trauma).now the transfer of defoe to portmouth.if its true that a agent not recognised ,was used by defoe and the transfer went thru, its broken the rules.that spurs were involved makes us liable.the buck stops at levy ,even if he wasnt involved personaly.a 10 point deduction would be a terrible start to a season.we know hes a money man and has run the club well moneywise.he is the one who has to take the heat.it seems unfair, but so is life.

Jun 29, 2009 at 5:11 AM | Unregistered Commentertony

is it a bird?is it a plane?no its a cuckoo.8 players up for sale including gomez, palacious, and modric.whats your drink, vodka,or meths?0 out of 10 ,must try harder.berba the big fish at spurs is fast becomeing the sardine at untd.with every forward bought he goes further back in the pecking order.maybe for a reputed 120,000 a week hes content to take the money.didnt he go there for a higher grade of football.hes won a trophy.it could be his first and last.could have been the king of white hart lane.with nice bank balance, but is that enough.?

Jul 6, 2009 at 10:05 AM | Unregistered Commentertony

so now its another cuckoo.zokora +2 mil for shawcross:who?you heard of him,i havent.on the day zokora signs for seville.99% speculation and 1% tip off.harry would make a good poker player when buying players}.the one thing you can be sure of ,they will be top quality.its frustrating to wade thru the garbage to find something with grain of truth.hope we dont buy dunne.when i saw him play he was player indecisive and lacking confidence.bentley i fear will still be around unless we take at least 50% cut in the buying price'so many add ons ons to the price ,who knows the final price.use this site, i like you am tired of seeing my name.maybe ill come in as englebert for some variety.

different sources say arry as been seen with young and cahill.p.g. its true would be two tremendous signings.young i think is better than lennon, but lennon hasnt reached his full potential yet.cahill a tenacious player(as all aussies seem to be)i doubt will come to spurs ,dont think his manager will let him go.as regards roman and his agents claim of faulty translation,i think he was fishing in the waters and was shocked by the poor response.roman has to expect that he must learn english to play in uk.also his comments on english women and english food would not get him into the diplomatic service.ive had borsht soup(beetroot)and fish and chips and borsht comes 2cd(but only just)

Jul 14, 2009 at 8:06 AM | Unregistered Commentertony

i think crouch would be the perfect fit.1 hes worked under harry.2 hes played alongside defoe,so they know each others play.where does this leave keane, good question.the kyles(if they come)frees corlucca to play in central defence if needed.not sure if roman will leave.if he did,we would need two strikers.hes fresh from the summer break and we should see what hes supposed to be able to do.if its same as before he could be unloaded in january.redknapps unusual name.its german.has a number of meanings ,including red head.going back about 500 years ,his grandmother(dont know which one)emigrated here.

im bemused.bent and maybe roman was supposed to go.both playing in friendlys.if they were going surely they wouldnt be playing in case they got injured.crouch appearsto be coming, but so is the messiah.my old pal sid(the arsenal fan)we all have our faults, says when you see them in your shirt believe it.i would add when spurs say they have signed him, they have.all the rest is bull.i said previously ithought roman should be given a chance til january.i take it back.why?because its a gamble.better to get someone new and have new hope.

yesterday i visited aston villa site.strong rumours of 10mil bid for jenas to replace barry(i make no comment ,but i am smileing).also yesterday jenas"i want to stay at spurs""arry we want to keep him".if viera or paulson comes jenas will be one the bench.he like bentley has big ego and i cant see him accepting the situation.gareth bale one of the greatest talents in uk football.but o so injury prone.not 2-3 weeks like many players, but many months.if you remember we bought him injured.hes only 20 but has also had more then his share of long injurys.english football is 100mph stuff, maybe he should consider martin jols supposed offer.i say supposed not because i dont believe he made it(great respect for the man)but it may be media hype.in the netherlands(there is no country called holland.holland is part of the netherlands)there they play with more thought and therefore produce more world class players.

alan sugar and me.met alan many moons ago, when he took his first steps upwards.carrying large suitcase of radios and car aerials, this was alans first steps to fame.alan i admire for his bluntness.he calls a spade a spade.in later years he even wanted me to work for him.i said no.no regrets.alan to me ,old petticoat lane trader.said of a amplifier he made ,then somebody else made for him,it was worse crap then his.when he got involved in spurs,he said"i know nothing about football"then promptly proved it by picking venables as manager.in later years the two were to go to court and alan was awarded 400,000sterling.venables didnt have enough money and the money i believe all the money was donated to charity.with alan what you see is what you get.if i ihad alans drive, which i havent,i would have taken a different path.i would want what i made to be known for its quality ,even 100 years on.

so darren bent insults levy for trying to recover what he paid for him.he did it on twitter which makes him a twat.like arrys need 1or 2 players more.could be 3 or 4.dont think the huntelaar or veira transfers will come off.its takeing too long and its giveing us all the hebi jeebies.i believe that arrys signings have been and will be top class.how many years do we have to go back to have a half decent manager.i know many will say martin jol.his weakness was he played his favourites when they should have been dropped.also haveing comolli standing behind him didnt give him a snowballs chance in hell of makeing his mark.history will deal kindly with him ,when his name comes up.a lone figure in a long line of duds going back to david pleat the nearly man.

dear darren bent, sir, while still under contract to the club ,you abused our chairman, you can expect a very large fine.however if you donate a sum the same as the fine to the new stadium there may be tax advantages for you.the vip seat block needs a sponsor.the sponsors name will be fixed on a plaque on the wall behind these seats.being a hi tec stadium each block will have a different name. the vip block will be named after the top of the body.each following block will be named after lower parts of the body until the feet.some parts we cannot use as we dont want any cock ups.imagine when you come to the ground with your new team,i will meet you and will escort you up to the vip seating area.your plaque will be on the wall for 100years so every body will remember you.the sign will say donated by mr darren bent and under it the sign block head.yours truly danny lascrew manager.

Q1.did he go for 12 mil, 14 mil, or 15 mil?Q2.did he go?man city remind me of a woman viv nicholson who won the pools.when asked ,viv what are you going to do with the money?her answer was, spend, spend and spend.which she did very rapidly.sunderland was the the first to spend a million on the whole team.p.s they got relegated.history sometimes repeats itself.
