Crouch bested by David Beckhams beard

England win. Crouchie scores two goals. Barry performs well. So obviously, David Beckham is awarded the man of the match by Steve 'Peter Crouch would have got it but he turned me down in the summer so...you know...' Bruce. Excellent. It's been a week of insightful insightfulness, topped by Phil McNulty's blog that included this gem:

"If Rooney is fit and in form England are contenders to win the World Cup. If he is not they are not - it is as stark as that"

On the nail stuff from Phil there. His clarification on the subject of our chances remains essential reading.

"If England turn up in South Africa and don't manage to miss their plane, they might stand a chance of winning it if they peform and win all their games"

That's a preview of his next one.

IMO, the only thing worthy of discussion from last nights 3-0 win against Belarus is Beckham's beard. Absolutely tremendous effort from the great man. Completley untrimmed around the sides making him look like a metrosexual Wolverine, with an additional ginger tinge on his moustache. It's actually more Adam Ant than Adamantium.

He was ok when he came on. Did spark some life into the side, but arguably nothing spectacular. Still, no bitterness. We all love Becks. But anyone would think he re-invents silce bread everytime he pulls on an England shirt.

Elsewhere, apparently Adriano has been offered to us for free. Which is a bit like two Irish blokes in a white van stopping you in the street and asking you to take a look at some laptops - for such a cheap price it's practically free - and you think its too good an offer to turn away and part company with your money to then find that when you open the case two Evian bottles of water are staring back at you.

International break is OVER. Rejoice.

Woodgate is on the mend. Modric is a couple of weeks away from a return. And King might just play against Pompey.

Happy days. Let's get back to business.

Some of Becks long range passing was gush.

Beckham did change a dull game last night but that was all. MOM for 30 mins or so play is a joke. Bruce is a tit. I didnt think Crouchy showed any sublime skills, a lack of them for sure. But if you score a couple of goals and have a few chances like he did, also tracking back and creating had to make him MOM. I say again Bruce is a tit.

So I'm not along in questioning the dead rat on Beckhams face. Needs to stop listening to the wife for fashion tips.

Astonished at MoM for Beckham. Quality player, there's no denying it but as has been said, you score a couple of goals to continue a great run for the national team, you would expect the award over someone that plays less than a third of the game. Disappointing.

Other than that, was an enjoyable enough game, but very glad to see normal service resuming. As much as I like Portsmouth (3 years at the university there) I really hope we stuff 'em. ;)

Crouch has to go to SA. His record for England is superb and if we have Rooney and Defoe fit then having Crouch come off the bench is a great option.

Off topic, but when do we get some more of the Bale and Bent series?
I was enjoying that...

If there is any truth behind the Adriano news, would we have to wait till January to sign him?

Don't know how good he is anymore; his last 2 years at Inter were quite depressing... especially after all the promise in his career.

please no Adriano ... that's berbatov without the goals and silky touch ... but with even more drama , sulking and general laziness

And i do not think you guys have a chance of winning the World Cup , sorry. I would like to see you do but the likes of spain , brazil , argentine and italy are just a bit stronger

and i m not even mentioning Germany or France
I don't know if the english see it that way but the abundance of foreigners in you league makes the quality of the game go up and you dominate the CL ... but it blocks the development of a lot of talented youngsters ...IMO

don't worry belgian, we won't win the WC, it is not that our stronger players aren't good enough, but our weakness with substitutes and the second string.

Still it will stop the hacks having to make stuff up for a month whilst they all goes into a ferverent, and almost rabid, frenzy at the prospect of selling newspapers by hyping every detail of each team up to the Nth degree.

As for the pompey game, we all know the media will be focussing on the negatives (return of harry, the now defunct prsecution cases from last year), let's just hope that we come away with 3 point, pompey have been more than a bit unlucky in a few games not to come away with the points, and it is probably not as easy as the league table might suggest to do so.

Crouch and defoe to score? wonder what odds you would get on that...

Sorry, but can someone clarify: Is "gush" good or bad?

Oct 15, 2009 at 2:34 PM | Unregistered CommenterFrazzler

Gash is what he probably meant.

Oct 15, 2009 at 3:13 PM | Registered Commenterspooky

which can be good or bad, like any phrase or expression it's about the context.

Oct 15, 2009 at 3:23 PM | Unregistered Commentertricky

wtf !!..... "2 irish blokes" ?????

have i missed something , why are they irish ?? why not just "2 blokes"

english people annoy me sometimes

next you'll be embarassing yourselves with the usual (yet always entertaining) "We'll win the World Cup" claims and then the shock that you didn't even get close .....

Oct 15, 2009 at 3:53 PM | Unregistered Commenternotimpressed

man , it s just an innocent bit of humour using stereotypes... you're the kind that laughs at jokes as long as they do not concern you and your peers ?

Tricky , i m not worried , it would be a nice change to see a less succesful team winning the WC. My fellow countrymen would disagree because of an england trauma we have from way back. When we still participated in World cups and Euro Leagues.

notimpressed - that little story about the laptop is true. And every white van incident seems to include a couple of Irish likely lads. Sorry chief. Didn't happen to me though, but two work mates. Personally the touch with the bottles of water was genius. What's Evian spelt backwards?

Yep. We all laughed our heads off.

Oct 15, 2009 at 4:26 PM | Registered Commenterspooky

I might have mentioned this before (memory loss an all that and some might ave missed it), Fratton Park backwards is 'Krap Nott Arf'.

Oct 15, 2009 at 5:37 PM | Unregistered CommenterTricky

I'm Irish. I laughed.

You really don't wanna be doing the snarky thing about the "insights" on other people's blogs mate. Glass houses, etc...
