Levy v Luka

Luka fails to turn up for training. Fails to board a plane to the US for our tour. Is supposedly fined (or will be if he remains absent). Villas-Boas has proclaimed that the player has placed himself in a difficult position with the club, considering we're actually negotiating to sell him. Levy has been angered and the rest of us are left bored by the returning transfer saga that appears (on the surface) to have stagnated.

We don't know what's going on behind closed doors but from the looks of it, the player with agent are once more attempting to force the issue.

Summer arrives
Spurs agree to allow Luka to leave, if valuation is met
Player agrees to this
The assumption is, there's a new 'gentleman's agreement' and one that will be played out with honour
Interested parties speak to both Luka's representatives and THFC
Within time, it becomes apparent that no English club will be able to afford the player
This is - no doubt - a strategic ploy by Levy to guarantee we don't strengthen the competition
Modric's valuation holds firm when compared to other 'top end' English to English club transfers
Only viable interest from the continent - and Real Madrid
Madrid and Spurs appear to be involved in long running negotiations to agree a fee
Spurs value Luka between £35M - £40M (guessing), Madrid don't value him quite as high
(Our best player won't be their best player, he might not even be a first team starter, hence the lack of agreement between the two clubs)
Negotiations continue with media doing as much guessing as the fans (i.e. player swaps)
Realisation kicks in that Spurs will stick to their mantra, and only sell when 'right price' is matched
Luka and agent decide that drastic action is required to attempt to orchestrate the move by applying pressure on Spurs and Levy to 'give in'
Honour is lost
Luka fails to appear in training session, fails to appear with passport for US tour
Spurs (via Villas-Boas, if not intentionally) states Levy is angered/club not happy and player has made it difficult for himself
Modric's contract still remains in a state of long term

Next move?

Madrid have to meet our valuation to put all of us out of our misery. Can't see how the player and agent think going against Levy in this manner is going to help them considering what the club and Levy went through last season with Chelsea.

We mugged them all off last time out, why would we drop our guard and give them the chance to punch their way through this time? Modric was knocked-out in the first fight. My money's on a TKO this time round. The player will be sold when the club want him to be sold and that will only happen when our expectations are complemented. Luka, any more below the belt punches and you'll be disqualified son.

Ding, ding.

Tell RM to FO and sell for the right price to PSG.

Luka is now playing a dangereous game trying to force the issue!
I fully agree with Levy on this one; Luka only leaves if the price is met !

Madrid only have 27 million and we should tell them to go and do one fine the Rat two weeks wages and give it to a few of our fans for season tickets a free draw and give our fans a full year viewing on Modric who will be sat on Madrid's bench like M Owen did. Just a mention about Hulk i have had a word with God and he said its down to his Agent and himself where he goes but if he chooses greed he wont get in Heaven and God said its up to Spurs fans to let Hulk and his Agent no this. Coys

Only one winner here Luka. Chicken (badge) v's Fox. As mentoined is going to be drawn out now all summer which we could all do without. Things going so well before this as well...... Well we could have never had a totally smooth running, successful and proactive transfer window here at spurs could we??

Modric has basically gone on strike. He will go unpaid while he remains on strike. Madrid know Spurs don't want to sell to Manure and therefore are trying their hand at a spot of 'Pontoon'. Daniel Levy held firm last season and I trust he will do the same again, only difference, is he wants shot of him this time around. Hold your nerve Mr Levy, we cannot have these types dictating the odds.

Jul 22, 2012 at 10:55 PM | Unregistered Commentercookiebun

Difficult to see a winner here, just losers all round. RM/THFC need to negotiate like gorwn-ups to solve this; I'd suggest £31m would see honour all round.

With only a month to go until the start of the season, I'm getting the feeling that Modric will alas be staying for another fun
packed year. Cue him to go missing in the first 2/3 games of the new season and the last 10 or so games of the campaign.
Madrid know Spurs won't sell to another team in the EPL, so in a way, they are in the box seat when it comes to buying. You could argue PSG could make a bid, but can you see Modric playing in the French league? No, nor I. For me, make him see out his contract. By this time he will be around 31. Who will want him then?

It's a bit rich for a fan to be telling the chairman to act like a grown up and then tell him what to take for the player. Oh Dear.

Jul 22, 2012 at 11:11 PM | Unregistered Commentercookiebun

I would tout him out to the Chinese or Russian clubs now! anywhere he'd rather not go, I would take £27m from them but not less than £35m from Madrid, if no takers ask the 36,000 supporters every home game to cough up £1.00 each to fund the KEEP MODRIC IN THE RESERVES FUND!

Jul 22, 2012 at 11:14 PM | Unregistered CommenterCarthage

Poison dwarf will not be wearing Spurs shirt again.. He doesn't deserve it. He can do what he likes,go on a strike, refuse to play which is a clear repudiatory of contract. Levy can even stop him from plating via FIFA and cancel his playing licence for the duration of his contract.

Jul 22, 2012 at 11:23 PM | Unregistered CommenterIver Biggen

Modric has stated that he wants CL football, Ligue 1 may not be the most attractive
option but with Ibrahimovich, Silva, Pastore, Lavezzi & co can see them playing CL
for the foreseeable future..which should appeal to him. At least if PSG made a bid might make might
Madrid raise theirs, though they may have spent their transfer fund now.
Modric may have made wrong move, bad advice but constant pressure from Madrid via
the press they have "in their pocket" and their players has certainly achieved what Madrid were after,
unsettling the player into trying to force a move..
Levy is a tough cookie, he may be angry at Modric but he won't let that get in the way of negotiating
and will do what he thinks best

Jul 22, 2012 at 11:28 PM | Unregistered Commenterharrison0908

Modric, just about sums up the total image of the modern day footballer. The I want Champions league call, does not hide the fact. That basically he is a greedy/selfish litte shitte. Then in fairness to him, there are plenty of others around.Even our hated rivals the arse have and are expirencing this. Its time clubs actually banded together, and make some of these greddy devils adhere to their contracts.Personally I do not want to see the shitte in a Spurs shirt ever againg.

Jul 23, 2012 at 12:14 AM | Unregistered Commenterbrian

I said it last year and I think it still applies: I doubt that Levy will buckle. Everyone said that at some point, Chelsea would bid too much and he would be off. He shoved their words back down their gullets.

I think he'll do the same this year as well, unless the valuation is met.

Modric has no trump cards whatsoever - his contract ends when he's 31 so this is his last big pay day. He can't refuse to play because he won't get paid. A transfer request won't get him anywhere either.

The only tiny fallout that Levy would have to deal with would be how football players view us as a club and whether the Modric 'saga' would make them reluctant to sign for Spurs. Personally, I don't think it'll be a problem, but it will be something to consider.

Other than that, Modric can fuck off.

Jul 23, 2012 at 12:14 AM | Unregistered CommenterSpursMan

Well one thing is for sure, luka cant stay in the club anymore, but yes we should wait for the right money. No matter what he has done for the club in the past, he has gotten paid for it and not to forget what the club has done for him. Its much to spurs he has ended up in the spotlight. He is a great player but seems to be a greedy and almost childish as a person and truly i dont think he deserves to play for spurs anymore.

Denzo - thank you for your thoughtful and insightful piece. Now be a good boy and give the laptop back to your Mum.

And speaking of favours, do us one and piss off!

Jul 23, 2012 at 6:00 AM | Unregistered CommenterDazspur

Denzo. Real Madrid didn't do Spurs any favours. When it comes down to business there are no favours given when millions of pounds are involved.
Madrid wanted rid of VDV quickly at the end of the window and Spurs wanted to buy him. A price was agreed and that was that. I dare say if they were asking 10 or 12 million for him then we wouldn't have bought him and he would have stayed at Madrid.
What you're saying is that they gave us VDV cheap and to return the favour we should sell them Modric for 8-13 million less than his value? Don't be stupid you idiot! This is business and things don't work like that in the real world.
Levy will hold out for the right price. The only loser in this at the moment is Modric. If I were another club I wouldn't want to buy him after this. If he can do it at Spurs he can do it again anywhere. It's bad for football if he gets away with it so Levy needs to stand his ground and I'm sure he will.

Jul 23, 2012 at 6:07 AM | Unregistered CommenterYiddo Jon

Denzo, what an insightful comment. Player power V Club power. His attitude is indeed unsavory. He knows the club want to sell him now. His agent is playing a dangerous game now. Hopefully the club will continue to fine him until he is gone. Levy has been here before so in him we trust.

Jul 23, 2012 at 7:13 AM | Unregistered Commenterhoofing

Levy has a problem. What to do with Modric? I know what I would do. Tell him that for 38 mill he can go to RM, PSG or to China, USA, or anywhere outside of the PL. If you, Modric, can't swing the deal then you will spend this year training with the juniors. Quite frankly I think at 38 mill he is overpriced. He certainly went missing at times last year. I would rather see him well away from the first team squad, as I think he could be an unsettling influence. Everyone has probably worked with some whining prat over the years, and know what an unsettling influence they have in the workplace. Quite frankly he's begining to give my arse a headache.

Jul 23, 2012 at 9:10 AM | Unregistered CommenterVictor Meldrew

The key thing about all of this is that THFC is established as a club that will always stand firm against "player power" and not be bullied by other clubs. That can only be a good thing can't it?

Jul 23, 2012 at 9:36 AM | Unregistered CommenterJack

Anyone know much about the 'over 28 year olds' with X amount left on contract, can buy out remaining contract? Suggestion is he could stay with us for one more season then leave for £4M - £6M. Hence why he might be able to apply pressure on Spurs to sell for less than our valuation - although can't believe for a second any of this would work in the real world of negotiations.

Jul 23, 2012 at 11:50 AM | Registered Commenterspooky

If Modric really wanted this move he would drop his wage demands by the £10m over his 4 or 5 year Madrid contract.
That would get him his move, Fabregas had to so why not ratboy?

Jul 23, 2012 at 12:01 PM | Unregistered CommenterPj

Last Season I thought Modric behaved more appropriately than Berbatov did... I take that back EMPHATICALLY..
Berbatov was throwing tantrums because we did not want to sell him and here we have a player who we are willing to sell
for what we believe is his value to us .. its not unrealistic like 100million for Cavani!!!.. While Real are trying to rip us off because the player wants to leave. I hope this guy is treated like Tevez(a d0g)... Let him rot until we get the right price..

Jul 23, 2012 at 12:07 PM | Unregistered CommenterSpurs4life

@spooky....

Article 17 of the FIFA Transfer Regulations states that players can unilaterally cancel their contract with their club after a certain protected period has expired if an amount of compensation is paid to their original club.

protected period - 2years for above 28 years old, 3 years for under 28years old.
I am not sure on the compensation part but I think He has to buy out his contract.... so i think next september he could be off for 15-20million in compensation?(correct me if i am wrong about the compensation)

PS: posted in the previous article by mistake

@ disgruntled fans of Madrid.

I was in Spain recently and needed some Asprin, I think you call it San Miguel, Anyway I stopped and asked a sun wizened old lady for directions to the nearest pharmacy. You can imagine my shock on learning, she was, the local pharmacy. She prescribed that I fly, immediately, back to England before I became unwell!

Your country's not only gone to the dogs, it's eating them too! Real have got to start living in the 'REAL WORLD', which in Spain's case is boarding on Dickensian. Your gluttonous use of the euro is about to burst in your wanting faces, like a putrid hematoma of realism. This is the only reason THFC find themselves in the middle of a pie throwing sitcom.

Go goad a bull....

"...putrid hematoma of realism."

If I am not mistaken the bosman ruling came into existence through a CAS ruling... I have a feeling this issue might have been brought up , ultimately leading to this rule.

"The Club can confirm Luka Modric has returned to training today (Monday) at Spurs Lodge"

Jul 23, 2012 at 11:03 PM | Registered Commenterspooky

I think we all have to admit that Luka is just another mercenary that has used a club as a stepping stone to the biggest contract of his career just Like Berb, Carrick etc. His behaviour does seem a little out of character though, but why sign such a long contract with Spurs if you knew you wouldn't be sticking around? His advisors obviously don't know what they're doing. We shouldn't get too angry with him though. At least we'll get a fee, he isn't scum-bound and we didn't raise him from a teenager. Ring any bells? He's done del on the pitch but this is a sad end to his time with us though. We must hold out for the right money now, even if the Croatian mafia have threatened him!!!

Jul 24, 2012 at 12:12 AM | Unregistered CommenterLilywhite London

This is all getting a bit diversionary.

We, the assembled hords of Yidshire, have become mesmerised. The Modric affair is all consuming. Years ago, I was woken in the dead of night, buy the sound of scratching, the dog looked as puzzled as me. Armed with nothing more than a shoe, I began my weary pursuit of the scratcher. Little did I know the Fcuker was organised and well equiped. At one point during this hard thought champaign, I actually considered moving. I would sit at my desk at work, behind the wheel of my car, sipping coffee in Costa, deep in murderous thought, ruminating, and plotting the annihilation of all things that scratch. I was consumed. Everywhere I looked, I saw a glitch, a route in, a route out. Floorboards, sheds, decking, loft insulation, carpets, kick boards, all began to pile up, as the werring sound of my cordless drill grew more intense. I cared for nothing apart from a resolution. An end.

August 1st is fast approaching and Defoe, and Harry Kane currently make up our strike force. After AVB announced that WE were challenging for the title this year, I sort of, expected, press conference, after press conference, announcing forwards, midfielders, keepers, left backs, right backs, but still we wait, while Levy runs amock with a shoe.

Please Mr Levy. Give those clothes back to whoever lent them to you, put down the shoe and concentrate on spending money, buy, buy, buy or it'll be bye, bye, bye to credibility, and progress.

We will replace him as we always do.We will go on to bigger and better things he will be a bit part player for Real.40 million or jog on,we wouldnt sell to Chelsea for that much ( allegedly)so why would we sell a better player year on for less?
Real are the "biggest club in the world"..........time to act like it.

got to take issue with the comments "he is a mercenary" " and " a greedy selfish little shite".............err yep thats right, thats why he left Croatia to come to us,you dont think he had pictures of Danny Blanchflower on is bedroom wall and an overwhelming desire to settle in Tottenham High Road do you?
We dont get Steve Perrymans or Ledley Kings very often,so when we do cherish them. All the foreigh imports are here for the payday and why not? Please dont think they come to Spurs for the love of the club, thats the stuff of history I m sad to say.

Jul 24, 2012 at 4:55 PM | Unregistered Commenterbournemouth spur
