Flashback III

“I don’t think he’ll hand in a transfer request. He will honour his contract”

Luka Modric’s agent, July 7th 2011.

For all the recent blog articles and rants, tweets, discussions and debate, I ask myself post-epiphany, what is the point in dissecting what you read from player, agent or club when the reality is nobody ever truly speaks from the heart, leaving the one constant (us) in all this chaos confused, angry and exhausted.

Half-truths, disinformation, conspiracy and lies.

Don't bother searching for loyalty and honour. They've long since been diseased by leprosy, left numb and disfigured, lost in some dark forgotten corner.

Enjoy the rest of your evening. Don't take life too seriously.

I always find spurs a welcome distraction from the real shit happening around me.

In addition could we really say players like the magnificent Ledley King would have been so loyal if his knee wasn't knackered. People hold him in great esteem when the words 'loyalty' and 'spurs' are mentioned, but you can gaurantee that if he was the picture of heslth (we all wish he was) he wouldn't be playing in a spurs shirt, he'd have moved on years ago.... Also other players such as Dawson, O'Hara (pre move) etc only are "LOYAL" to us because we are as good as it gets for them... No-one should expect loyalty anymore (sadly to avoid disappointment), what we should expect and work towards is a club that has the financial muscle to keep players through reward and CL. This is where the club has let us down. Three transfer windows of annoying indecisiveness and we find oursleves in this situation now... It aint getting any better. Tell Chelski that they have until 21st July to bid 45m or fuck off - case closed.. Spurs Govner made a good point on another blog that Spurs never had the 40m they banded about last transfer window.... easy to say you failed with X bids after the event!!

Just read a Kevin Bond interview on Sky Sports,
To me that says everything that needs to be said. Sit back take a breath take on board what Kevin says, take on board what Levy says & hope a 40million bid does not land..
In the mean time since this shit hit the fan and was stoked to buggery by the Daily Mail I havent read one piece on whom the fans want...

If anyone is interested I reacon we should sign Samba (Especially after hearing newx regarding Ledley & William)
I would also like to see one striker in (Big Name, Big Striker) & id like to see Dos Santos stay and maybe one more big name

I don't ask for 'loyalty' as such, just someone who's prepared to give it some effort rather than running off for money the second he's tapped up.

@irishspur

Well said.

Yeah, fuck it. One way or another a new season will start soon.

Would you really want Luka to stay now?,I dont if im honest - too much shit which he hasnt come out and denied so to me he doesnt want to be here

id take Sturridge and 25m,saw a piece last night they were offering 30 sturridge mikel and alex (lol) shud bite there hands off for that tho, even if he is a billionaire he aint a twat

wether or not Daws is at the top of the clubs he could play for give the lad some credit, before the ethernet ink was dry he was on our main site refuting the allegations as pure bollox - words im sure he would have used had he been allowed

Loyalty isnt what it used to be in footballing terms, too much money involved now and itll only get worse

Just wait till the Yanks start appreciating the game properly and then watch the exodus begin - we'll be getting up at dick head o'clock to watch a decent bit of footy rather than the premiership full of 3rd tier footballers and carlos kickaballs cos if they can pay our end of career players more than they got in there prime,im sure the future messi's and ronaldo's of this world will be over there before u can say "have a nice day"

Spookes can we have another BAE adventure?, that has been the only crack of light in this tunnel covered in rinho dung that has been the off season.

Who are you kidding Spooks?
I don't take life very seriously
but Spurs are different.

You can change wives, jobs,house,car
but not your football team(or your children)

It's not a matter of life and death as we all know.

L'affaire Modric is another reality check
but we should all know better by now.

Looking forward to the new season
and the pre-season personally
I have amended the note to Father Xmas
about the away shirt with Luka's name on it.
Changing it to A.N.Other

PUT SOME STANK ON IT LUKA!

Jul 15, 2011 at 10:26 AM | Unregistered CommenterWinterWeekend61

I am leaving on holiday , far from english tabloids , transfer rumours and my usual work related football updates

And for once i am happy with that

Spooks , don't let it get to you mate , love the club and support the players that are around , analyze performances but as you said the words they utter ... better just ignore that

Luka tripped the last romantic notions about football out of my head and left me wondering if it"s all worth it , but then when he is gone , someone else will fill his place and THFC will still be there

to dare is to do ... something he took a bit to literally i am afraid

I'm hearing you.

I honestly have not a clue what to blog about, so wont do so until there is something worth while.

Knowing Spurs, expect a 10,000 word essay soon.

Harry's at it again.....
Says that he fully expects to be naming Modric in the team to face Everton on 13th August.
All well and good, but that goes along with the tradition that we will hold on as long as possible and sell on the final day of the window for as much cash as possible.
What's the point in playing him for the first 3/4 games, then spending another 4/5 games trying to re-balance the team? We could be back on 2 points from 8 games by then!
Also, it would be typical Spurs to name him in the Europa League squad for the play-offs, then sell him and not be able to add a replacement to the list.

I say sell now, sort out the balance of the team without him and move on......... I've been a Spurs fan for 24 years and we always progress from the sale of a star player. Why should this be any different?

The only issue we really have as fans is that he signed a new long term deal and declared his desire to stay put.
Surely no-one really expected him to honour the full length of the deal. Levy tied him (along with Bale and others) to a long term contract so that their transfer value would not suddenly diminish if we failed to stay in the CL. Levy was looking at business first, football second. It's a shame, but it's what we have become as a club.

Oh, and TalkSport have found Luka's written transfer request:

Belgian Spur - Away from all this transfer window nonsense is probably the best way to be, it's almost addictive now seeing what rubbish the media can come up with next.

Spooky - I'll look forward to whatever comes next.

Will be watching ESPN on Saturday, most likely with the sound turned down, as I'm sure the whole Modric sage will be given enough air time.

I love Spurs for this type of thing exactly. It's just so "us".

LATEST NEWS/SCOOPS/BULLSHIT (Delete where appropriate....first 2 obviously)

Gio sold for £10m

& L'Equipe reporting we're very close to signing Diarra (again)

Add one pinch of salt

Jul 15, 2011 at 1:51 PM | Unregistered CommenterWinterWeekend61

There's NO way we got £10 million for Gio....... that would make Modric's value rise to about £60 million.

Jul 15, 2011 at 2:16 PM | Unregistered CommenterWalkerboy

You say that like it's a bad thing ;o)

Udinese the buyer apparently.

You're right though, £10m for Gio sounds total bollocks...I'd be surprised if we even got what we paid for the pisshead.

Jul 15, 2011 at 2:31 PM | Unregistered CommenterWinterWeekend61

£10 million.
That boy could have beeen the new Modric.
Or was Modric the new Gio?

The better Luka is pre-season
the bigger the loss we are going to feel
when he goes.

Lets sell him and Bale and get on with the NDP
and start all over again.

Jul 15, 2011 at 3:06 PM | Unregistered CommenterJimmyG2

Jimmy , having a limerick week or is it a Haiku week , i am confused :)

Jul 15, 2011 at 6:57 PM | Unregistered CommenterBelgian Spur

What a surprise! Modric not fit to play tomorrow.

Jul 15, 2011 at 6:58 PM | Unregistered CommenterTMWNN

Lets not let Levy get away with not spending. This Luka deal is a distraction. Tell Chelsea a price that is resonable. £40m and get it done so we can bring some other players in. More quality up front and a fit back line. Joey Barton would be a effective if unpopular.

Loyalty

The only loyalty that exists anywhere near professional football or any other professional sport is the loyalty of the fan to the club or team. Managers, club owners, players, clubs - they are all focused on making money, winning and glory (in some combination, and of course these are mutually reinforcing categories).

Luka has a contract, but wants to leave.

Other players have contracts that are sold off by clubs/managers that don't want them (and we stand on the sideline and cheer wildly if it is a player we want to see go, even if they try hard and their only crime is not being quite good enough). That's just part of the game, or the business of the game.

And it's a two way street. Trust me, I hate that my fairytale romance with the little Croatian has been irrevocably damaged, but again there's a reason we refer to these emotional relationships (be they in person with actual people or metaphorical from the other side of the world) as 'fairytale': because they are all bullshit. Real relationships are hard, take a lot of work and inevitably involve all parties hurting each other to some degree. And that's just the successful ones.

We're still married to Luka, even though the little fucker is eyeing the pseudo-hot Russian chick next door (who we all know has had enough plastic surgery to keep Beverly Hills docs in Maseratis through 2022)and sexting her and has even hired a lawyer to begin divorce proceedings. But we've got the prenup,so we're hanging on, and if we make it through then perhaps we can make the marriage work.

I'm so far down the metaphor rabbit hole I can't see light....help!

COYS!

I'm almost more concerned that we haven't sold some of the other players yet like Keane. Party line has been no big signings until we generate some cash from pairing down the squad.

Sandro out for at least three months. Back to Jenas and Huddlestone in the middle, tall circus man up top.

Jul 16, 2011 at 7:24 AM | Unregistered CommenterTMWNN

robbie : superb. Penultimate paragraph made milk and crunchy nut cornflakes escape from my nasal passages !

Jul 16, 2011 at 8:29 AM | Unregistered Commenterwakeywakey

That last paragraph is completely and totally on the money. Buck the trend, don't let him go and let's see how it all works out. I'm willing to take that risk. So is Levy.
