Flashback II

"Tottenham Hotspur gave me my chance in the Premier League and I want to go on to achieve great success here with them. Yes, there have been enquiries from other big clubs, but I have no interest in going anywhere. Last season's Top 4 finish was an indication of where we are as a Club and I feel I can continue to improve and go on to achieve everything I want to at Spurs."

Luka Modric, after signing a six year contract in May 2010.

They're just words. They mean nothing, regardless of whether you say them out loud or write them down. Or say something and mean something else, and end up writing that down instead.

Sincere apologies to Suzanne Vega:

"Luka"

My name is Luka
I live in the top drawer
I work magic most weekends
Yes I think you've seen me before

If you hear whispers late at night
Something in Russian, some kind of fight
Just don't ask me what it was
Just don't ask me what it was
Just don't ask me what it was

I think that when I signed it
Dan gave me a wink and nod
I started feeling remorse
But fuck it, I’m the wiz of Mod

They only bid until you say
“Go on, my boy, wear Blue and make your way”
You just don't argue anymore
You just don't argue anymore
You just don't argue anymore

Yes I think I'm going
I handed it in yesterday
I know I said I wouldn’t
It's not your business anyway
I guess I'd like to be alone
With nothing broken, nothing thrown

Just don't ask me what I signed
Just don't ask me what I signed
Just don't ask me what I signed

Whatever... You're dead to me now Luka...you hear me, dead.

In truth is anyone surprised. The days of loyalty are long gone.

Let it go mate

In the meantime, found this on Twitter - absolutely brilliant

It's come to the stage where Levy can't back down. If he does, then any player currently on a long-term contract will know he can 'do a Modric' too.
Bad situation for the club.

My wife is due a baby in 2 weeks, we genuinely considered naming he/she Luka. That's how fooled I was by this little git. It just shows there is little or no loyalty in Football anymore. I'm am minded to call him Michael mind you based on dawsons reaction to the poison printed about him this week.

That's how to deal with that sort of nonsense. Knock it on the head.

Whatever way this plays out now, in the unlikely circumstance we hold on to modders as stated above he is dead to me.

Still COYS

He's decided 120K per week is better than all that loyalty bollocks. I dislike him for it but in all honesty how many of us would be any different?

Id be different, have some balls man

Is it just me that is getting a bit tired of all the Modders slagging in general by Spurs fans!? I understand that we are very passionate fans, but I think some people need to remember that for the footballers, it is about a job/career. If YOU were offered a better paying job with more future opportunities at another company, what would you do? Loyalty, is unfortunately a thing of the past, both in the corporate and footballing world. The last thing I would want is to lose Modric, but if he goes we should be grateful for the amazing service he has given the club, not slag him off. Until we pay the wages that the other big clubs are paying and/or start winning trophies, we need to accept that we might keep losing top players. Let's hope not though! Or maybe it's just me that feels this way!!??? COYS!

During last season, too many of our players (and fans for that matter) lived for the Champs League only and now we find ourselves in the position whereby our (top) players want out as are good enough to play in the Champs League plus those teams regualrly participating in it can 'easily' afford to pay the higher wages. A vicious circle and a difficult one for us fans...

Id play for spurs for nothing because i am a supporter of the club and i dont come from the richest of backgrounds so appreciate that even 5000 a week is alot of money. However i would want to milk other clubs of there money because i don't respect them as much as my beloved spurs. Foreign players are always going to do the same. should we expect the loyalty from foreign players or even some greedy english players. True loyalty comes from us supporters.

Yea but Levy broke a gentleman's agreement. Yea Luka you broke your word to the fan's and not just that you little shit you have a contract which is a little more legally binding than a bloody gentleman's agreement you knobhead.

Jul 14, 2011 at 4:43 PM | Unregistered CommenterBrazilyid

Sam, it's one thing to expect player loyalty - few of us are that Pollyanna-ish. But to dance and moan one year into a six year contract is a slightly different situation. But I certainly get the need to look after ones self, esp given the very narrow window for peak earnings and performance (which Modders is entering right now).

Stop using the 'if you were offered 2x, 3x your wages you'd be off too....' bollocks

FFS!

Totally different.

If Spurs can't pay high salaries and until they will have a bigger stadium all it has to be done is to establish a well organized scouting system topped by an appropriate DoF and to try to spot promising players at an early stage.
Then together with some experienced other players the club could build up a team able to compete regularly for a top four place and international competitions.
There are many other European clubs that follow this approach.

whoa whoa whoa, hang on a sec.... Where is the proof he has handed in a transfer request? The guardian ran the story without a single quote from anyone.... Seems like a little bit more stirring to me.....

Not defending Modric at all - in fact, I am thoroughly pi$$ed off with the bloke - but we do need the facts...

loanx.....I assume you mean getting rid of Arry first then? because that dream couldn't happen under his watch. (I don't mean his fakkin rolex either)
Pardon the pun but unlike Wenger, Arry just don't do kids.

Luka was happy to sign his new deal a year ago....he made his bed, he can lie in it.

I am glad we are making a stand....if every team acted the same perhaps players would think again before making long term commitments...the net result of that (a few years down the line) would that it would be bloody difficult to get a player to extend their contract.

Ultimately we need to be in the CL and winning stuff to keep top players, but even then that guarantees nothing....Ronaldo!

To all those saying we'd all do the same:

I'd leave my job for two or three times as much money.

BUT:

A. I'm not contracted for six years. I need to give eight weeks' notice, so that's what I'd do, to the best of my abilities and without complaint.

B. I've never said I love my firm and want to stay forever. My boss would think I was taking the piss if I did.

Furthermore, I'd never take dirty money from a Russian gangster.

Jul 14, 2011 at 6:46 PM | Unregistered Commenterfrontwheel

He is scum. When he isn't in the right frame of mind to play come the PL kick off, who will be thanking him for his service then?

He'll probably pick up a mysterious virus between now and the game against the Kaiser Chiefs on Saturday.

£22m, then £27m. Wait for the £32m bid that'll be tabled next week, then kick him out. That's doubled Levy's dough, for a bloke, although very good, rarely finds the net, and who can be pushed around in certain games. Good business for businessman Levy.

Jul 14, 2011 at 7:41 PM | Unregistered CommenterTMWNN

Don't fall for Redknapp's defeatist clap-trap. 2 or 3 decent signings and we could still compete. Redknapp is hoping that the Crorat leaves - it's a ready made excuse for failure.

Jul 14, 2011 at 7:53 PM | Unregistered CommenterTMWNN

I simply cannot understand how he can go from these statements to forcing a move to Chelsea for an insulting sum in a matter of weeks... wtf??

The whole thing stinks...

Jul 14, 2011 at 9:09 PM | Unregistered CommenterDY

I always thought he would go to man utd, so not too surprised Chelsea have waved some cash at him to attract him.

Last year luka signed a deal, a long one. Not long after levy comes out stating top 4 is ambitious, he is thinking more top 6. He wont break the bank trying to get into the top 4.

Halfway through the season harry is talking about winning the league.

Then luka makes his statement in April. Full of intent and positivity. One month later his manager tells the world fifth is good enough and probably the best we can hope for.

We all know we need one or two strikers. Look at our record of signing strikers in the last few years and I for one can't blame modric for wanting to leave.

Players come and go, as do managers and chairmen. The only constant is the fans and even they would have been split had the OS happened.

Modric is a professional footballer, nothing more nothing less, if he scores against everton next month what will the reaction be? Him kissing the badge - I doubt it. Supporters cheering the goal scored but not the player? That's the usual line isn't it.

It's all bollocks isn't it.
