Nah, just f*cking with ya. What a shambles.

who would want to take the England job? KISS OF DEATH!!!

Jun 27, 2010 at 4:57 PM | Unregistered Commenterwill

i cant think of may others that you would bring in...we have no real young manager that could take the helm....only thing that arry has against him is the fact he seems a little dodge...but with what ive just seen i hope that most of those players never put on an englad shirt again....GUTLESS OVER PAID WANKERS....ECON CLASS ON WAY HOME.....

Jun 27, 2010 at 4:59 PM | Unregistered CommenterSOUTH UPPER

It's the 'players' (sic) - not the manager

Jun 27, 2010 at 5:04 PM | Unregistered CommenterChivers72

why not buy mesut ozil seems a gd buy?? anyways... england manager should be either stuart pearce or roy hodgson simple as..

Jun 27, 2010 at 5:05 PM | Unregistered Commenterdazza

Well Harry just distanced himself from it on BBC. Says we should stick with Capello.
But..... he did speak so muck sense on how you should be playing and how you should set up.
How come its obvious to everyone except Capello? He's way too stubborn!

Jun 27, 2010 at 5:08 PM | Unregistered CommenterYiddenAgenda

Just seen your tag line: It was actually 2005 when we won the Peace Cup. On another note...IF Harry would be foolish enough to still want the England job after tonight's shambles, who would you like to get in to manage us (from the available pool - this is not "fantasy football" after all)?

Jun 27, 2010 at 5:11 PM | Unregistered Commentersheikh352

It's just as well Harry is still involved with the law. Can't have anyone managing England from Block A at the Scrubs. If Heskey and SWP are the answer to the question "What the fuck do we do when we're 4-1 down ?" then Capello's history. Hodgson's got the only proven international pedigree. Unless we all join hands and try and contact Sir Alf and Sir Bobby.

Jun 27, 2010 at 5:29 PM | Unregistered CommenterOldSpur

There is a big problem in our league and now is the wrong time to go into details but to many players are under performing for England but are outstanding for there clubs . This needs sorting before any other manager takes over or we will be talking about sacking another manger in four years time once again

Jun 27, 2010 at 5:50 PM | Unregistered Commenterdaqvspurs

Phew, glad you were messing with my mind.

Jun 27, 2010 at 6:04 PM | Unregistered CommenterIaG

Mixed feelings - longer break for our boys, right? No new injuries, and only Defoe playing in such a humiliating game.

Makes you realise what a good back four we have, plus great team players in Hud/Mod (and Pal) protecting them. No protection for Terry/Upson today, and boy did they need it.

Jun 27, 2010 at 6:27 PM | Unregistered CommenterMr Spang

Lads, it wasn't Capello and it wasn't the Uruguayan linesman. The English team is comprised of 11 guys whoo by and large are outstanding in their positions for their clubs. But Terry has Carvalho next to him, Lampard has Essien and Ballack and Malouda next to him, Gerard has Spaniards and Argentinian around him, Rooney has Berbatov. They play in their club positions in their club systems. The only pairings that play together all the time with any regularity are Crouch and Defoe and Dawson and King and they were never seen as pairings in the 4 games.

Much as the OP was only messing - as a Spurs fan I have felt that 'Arry has been building his own mini-England squad at the Lane for some time. Much as 'Arry might say Capello - I think your tabloids will be saying 'Arry very shortly and the pressure will be on. I hope he stays at Spurs obviously enough but don't be so sure when the repercussions are all over that the weight of the press practically "hands" the job to 'Arry.

Sorry about the sig, obviously there is a "the" missing in the post somewhere.

Jun 27, 2010 at 7:07 PM | Unregistered CommenterNotEnglish

Thankfully even though this is a joke, the FA would not want someone with a court case hanging over them, so fair play harry the tax dodger lol.

They should get hoddle or venables back, 2 managers that had short but succesful england spells who lost the job for non footballing reasons

Jun 27, 2010 at 7:54 PM | Unregistered Commenter2P8G

Anyone but Heskey in the squad anyone?!

Jun 27, 2010 at 8:05 PM | Unregistered CommenterHoe

Hard to know where to start with this one. Though I will say our performance throughout the tournament met my expectations. Hopefully this will act as a wake-up call at last. 2006 was pretty shit, so we did a great job in doing even worse this time.
Manager - No plan B. No organisation in defence. We're two goals down, let's bring on Emile Heskey.

BUT

Let's face it, there is a lack of talent coming through and of those that supposedly are world class, Rooney and Gerrard, one didn't show up (fatigue? injury? insufficient support?) and the other was stuck out of position. Do we have a match-winner to bring on? Heskey? SWP? Is that the best we can do? Sadly, yes.

I think the experiment with continental managers is over. I don't want to see any more tactics which are "avoid defeat" rather than "go out and win". Fancy pants from Serie A are not much better than home grown, but are worse to watch.

I fear for the next ten years. The debates about all those foreigners denying young English talent the room to blossom are going to be all over the papers from now to our next international failure. Where's the next Gazza? The next Lineker? The next Owen?

At least I've got the transfer merry-go-round to look forward to now.

Jun 27, 2010 at 8:16 PM | Unregistered Commenter555

I feel daft for over-rating our chances and believing in 'the dream', but you'd think - tactics and selection aside, the players would collectively go for it. Instead we get an abject disaster.

Back in my box I go.

Jun 27, 2010 at 8:45 PM | Registered Commenterspooky

Football's all about optimism, Spooks, so you keep banging the drum, sir.

Jun 27, 2010 at 8:51 PM | Unregistered Commenter555

No way is Capello to blame. That was suicide defending on 'bread and butter' passes. One man back at 2-1 down on 60 minutes free kick, anyone? absolute madness. Anyone could have told you that a) Lampard was gonna shoot, b) he was fairly likely to hit the wall, making it a good chance for the Germans to break.... so why have 8 men in the box? makes no sense. Obviously some responsibility rests with Capello, but there is no managerial reason why Rooney is terrible whenever he pulls on an England shirt, theres no reason why Terry and Upson made (literally) schoolboy mistakes all game. Yes they werent shielded (Barry went missing is an understatment) but they were still awful. People were asking how regularly theyd played together...who cares? Carrick et al made better defenders in Man Utd's make shift defence this season...

Jun 27, 2010 at 9:23 PM | Unregistered Commenterjc

It is capellos fault, after all he picked upson, johnsen, carragher, heskey,Barry,Green, all shit, and did not give our golden boy Dawson a game, capello is a stubborn idiot .

Jun 27, 2010 at 9:45 PM | Unregistered Commenterkoko61

Also spaghetti and fish and chips dont go hand in hand, unless your a British Italian, who knows how to cook fish and chips, just saying we need a British born manager who knows the culture of the British game.

Jun 27, 2010 at 9:53 PM | Unregistered Commenterkoko61

Some think our squad so stellar that anyone could manage it and we would challenge for the title.

I think we would be a lot weaker without Harry myself but if Harry replaces Capello we can see how accurate that judgment is.

Jun 27, 2010 at 10:03 PM | Unregistered CommenterTed

The FA is run by a collection of imbeciles. Crozier, Barwick , Palios , Scudamore , Eriksson , Triesman , just a gallery of rogues on the make. No clue about the game, terrible managerial choices.

Appointing 'Arry now is pointless. It would be 10 years too late. Redknapp would probably have got the best out of the so-called Golden Generation. We may even have won something.

This shambles is gonna take some time to recover from.

Trevor Brooking should be made FA Supremo, and Roy Hodgson manager.

COYS.

Jun 27, 2010 at 11:28 PM | Unregistered CommenterLebowski

England has to rethink and rebuild its entire culture around football.
The problems run very deep and are complex to sort out. It will take years but the FA needs to ask some deep questions and explore structural change.
One thing for starters is the working-class only domination of football in the UK. You have much too small a country to limit yourselves to one economic class. Surely there are good middle class or even upper class athletes who never get to play because they're written off as toffs or whatever it is you call them. But the fact is that other countries have cultures that are more inclusive than yours. The point is not mine--read Soccernomics for more.
This is the 21st century and you are clinging to some old 19th century idea of who is supposed to play football.
Look at the USA and the class diversity of its players. You could and should learn a lot from them. The USA is getting better and you are just getting worse in every measurable way. Even though its best athletes still don't play the game.
Clearly you need to learn from Germany and figure out how develop the youth system.

Jun 27, 2010 at 11:47 PM | Unregistered Commenterseptic

I don't think the blame is on lack of tallented English players. You just need to put together a team with perhaps one or two outstanding players and the rest fit hungry players who are in the right positions. England had in this generation of players A Cole, SG, and Rooney and enough decent players to play with them.

Instead of doing what every other nation does and picking a proper balanced team our managers always pick the big name players. Not just Capello, but every manager for the last 10 years.

Is there an outside force telling the manager he has to pick certain players? Is it pressure from the FA to keep the sponsors happy? Is it too much power in the hands of the players? I can't imagine that Capello honestly felt that he had no better option on the left than SG.

There are alot of over-rated players in the England team and some very poor ones, but every team has them. Not quite sure why they all played when better options were in the squad, but again perhaps with Terry Capello has to pick him.

Anyway the next generation already has enough decent players to put on a show.

Jun 28, 2010 at 12:28 AM | Unregistered CommenterJJ

Whatever about king daws etc starting when fit blah blah he should have played 4-4-2 with lennon right j Cole left Barry and gerrard in middle Rooney and Defoe up front with glen Johnson playin as a rb not a rwb. As spooky said before the games started Johnson's attacking mentality isolated Lennon and fucked our chances from the start. Add to that the clear fact that Rooney is not fit and off his game...

Jun 28, 2010 at 1:19 AM | Unregistered CommenterTomtraubert

Grrrrrr........pain in the fucking ass. However it's ok all
of us sittin here goin on about it and pointing out capello's mistakes he's the one getting paid for it. He was under serious pressure and couldn't really be controversial and drop gerrard or lampard and risk the wrath of a nation especially when he knew the squad would be on 'tinternet etc reading about it and on the phone to the wags......which brings me to another point ..... anyone else out there think the wags should have been allowed to go with them? And Terry's press conference didn't really help either. Personally I reckon he's a class defender but overall not as good as a fully fit ledley but he's an absolute dog faced cunt. Not that that hampers his ability to play the game. Having said all that while I called for Barry in the middle he did get ass fucked for the 4th but I still reckon my earlier formation recommendation would have yielded greater success ... check that ... any success. Look. I've been on the gargle since kick off and coupled with the disappointment of this shit and a fuel pump problem yesterday I'm rambling and ranting on equal measure.

Sorry guys. Fuck me I can't wait for prem kickoff.

Capello absolutely at fault, since when is an out of form striker (Rooney) allowed to pick his partner?A player that doesn't even start for his club? Don't make me start on Johnson the fucking twat, Capello sacrificed Lennon's game so that A'hole can rush forward. It would work much better if Carragher was the right back and Lennon played the Spurs role. Fucking Milner , it's fucking England national team we're talking about, at best he is a reserve . Lennon is better with a bad leg and one eye closed for god sake.Don't feel sorry for Capello one bit fuck him , with his team selection this is as far as they go

Jun 28, 2010 at 7:38 AM | Unregistered Commenterbonse

We don't need a fancy manager with a good club record

We need a ballsy English manager that doesn't bow down to media and player power

England haven't been a squad, we've had to accommodate too many hype players, and have left out the players that would actually gel the team into an effective unit

There were five Spurs players in the squad, who all play together regularly and know how to play well with one another, Fabio played one of them

We need a new manager that is completely under the radar, Ian Holloway or Steve Coppel anyone??

I said on this blog who would let us down and except for th ref i was spot on. I also said if Hudds was left at Home for Barry we would have a bad World Cup . We got sidetracked by one game against Japan five players won there Tickets on the back of forty five mins and five subs all at once we came back and that was our downfall Phillips Cole Heskey Milner and Barry . Big Tom outplayed most of these German in the under twenty ones not in the final we lost 4-0 he never played he was injured . That game should have bean a warning Pierce also picked the wrong Keeper who was dreadful and without Tom the under twenty ones had no creator like Swinestiger . Who can pass the ball to get Milner behind defenders Lampard NO Gerrard no Barry we had no supply and no with and no defense the result 4-1 James saved us but his forty year old legs could not stop Germanys goals that would see him with no defense in front of him and Heart would have saved all three Goals with speedy young legs he commanded is are between the sticks heroically but failed miserably when he left is penalty area the culprits Terry Upson Johnson along with James left a gaping Hole even we could exploit 8 ft by 8 ft became 20 ft by 20 ft These players would have made the difference king Dawson Lennon Huddlestone Crouch but the sad thing is the click stopped it happening Utd chelsea Liverpool dominated selection Gerrard Terry Rooney Lampard the so called Golden era Golden Bollocks is a better name Cole Terry are always using there Bollocks but not on the pitch its time to use our Kids Wiltshire shawcrcross Hudds Lennon Wallcot Conner Wicham Walker Caulker Bostock Townsend the Arsole kids . We should include five under twenty ones in all the friendly games and upgrade the ones who shine or we will keep leaving players like Hudds and Wallcot Agbonlahore at home because of the big club click Chelsea and Utd

Weak defending against a very efficiënt and pacy team , i had the feeling the EPL players were being thaught their own game by the germans , good defending , Energy and pace in abundance , trickery when needed , good finishing after clean counters and most of all having the balls to play that way with a pretty young team ...

First time ever i have sympathy for Germans , nuff said.

My humble rantings :)
The Manager

Capello should be keel hauled for picking players who are out of form and playing them out of position. Personally I think he lost the dressing room as soon as he stopped the WAGs travelling.
We needed a defensive RB to support Lennon/SWP/Milner not try and replace them, a CB who is used to playing on the right (Dawson anyone?) should have partnered Terry or King, Joe Cole should have played on the left as he has a good understanding with cashley. With Barry/Carrick as the holding midfielder you then have a solid core to the team to allow you to change the shape from a 442 to 451 by simply changing a striker for a midfield player.

Its not rocket science, managers do this week in, week out, in leagues across the world

Round holes, round pegs, simples.

The Players

Too many players didn't show up, now whether this is down to them thinking it’s their god given right to be there and thinking that they would breeze through the games without trying, or they were genuinely knackered from a long PL season I guess we’ll never know.

But the one thing that was very clear to every supporter was the lack of passion and application shown by the majority of the players. Lets face it how many of them looked like they were really busting a gut out there.
No Ratings, just my observations

Rooney ran around like a headless chicken

Heaskey, why oh why!!!!

Defoe was just Defoe, came alive when in the box but was generally muscled out of the way when trying to hold things up (wasn’t caught offside very often though)

Gerrard was on a shoot from anywhere glory hunt

Lampard was ineffectual, mistimed his runs into the box (except for THAT goal) and was generally out of touch with the rest of the midfield

Lennon, isolated…..not much more to say really, although looking how often SG and FL didn’t pass to him and how often GJ over ran him compared to Milner makes me wonder if there was something going on behind the scenes.

Milner, industrious but not really of the required standard. World class RM? No didn’t think so.

Joe Cole, didn’t really see enough to form an opinion, again played out of position.

Barrytried to live up to the hype but all too often was pulled out of position, at one point he was playing higher up the field than Rooney.

SWP once again showed that he has a bit of trickery up his sleeve; unfortunately it’s only a bit. When played on the right tried to do what Lennon should/could do but without much success. Was also starved of service but to a lesser extent that Lennon.

Cashley, one of our better performers but the lack of cover left him exposed.

Johnson is not a defensive right back, was all too often caught out of position another glory hunter in my opinion.

Terry, WTF was he doing? In his defence he was played out of position and showed some great last ditch defending. Otherwise a complete ****.

Upson, out of his depth simple as.

Carragher did well when called upon but really was a bit too long in the tooth for this world cup.

King should he have gone? Personally think it was a gamble worth taking but one that ultimately failed.

Green, quite simply played one game to many.

James</B>, probably our best play of the tournament, which in itself is a pretty damming indictment of the rest of the team.

Player Power

It appears to me that there is a core group of “undropables” (Gerrard, Terry, Lampard) that seriously throw their toys out of the pram if they do not get their own way and I believed they sulked their way through this world cup.

As for Terry’s little chin wag with the press, if Capello had any balls he would have put him on the first plane home.

"Undroppable" because the sponsors say so. That's why Beckham is sat there on the bench practising his Zoolander face and selling suits when he should be at home with his kids.
It's absolutely farcical that the national game is run by a self-serving governing body that would rather turn a pound note in the short term than invest in some kind of youth system that can produce eleven competent footballers or at least provide the incentive for clubs to do so. Unless clubs are forced to operate within their means, without excessive debt or billionaire investors, then it's always going to be easier to buy from abroad than to develop home-grown talent.

Culturally there is too much emphasis placed on jingo-istic 'effort' and 'passion', to the point where our you'd-want-them-in-the-trenches-with-you (but not on the pitch) warrior defenders are celebrated for trying to head-butt the pitch as opposed to being able to defend properly and bring the ball out of defence without hoofing it. But then that's poncey and foreign, innit?
We have no-one with the nous or vision to put their foot on the ball and dictate play in midfield, none of the England squad are wanted by the big European clubs and yet the very average but very hard working Milner is apparently regarded as a £28m Premiership midfielder! Pretty much says it all really.
As for the detrimental effect of our glib, knee-jerk media or the dim-wit fans who buy into this and any old bullshit peddled by advertisers about the war, 66, Bobby Moore.... I despair. We've got the national team we deserve quite frankly.

Waddle nails it here:

As an Australian I watched the game as a neutral. Here are some observations:

1. If that is the best squad Cappello could select, then obviously he needs the sack.
2. Terry, Upson, Johnston and Barry must never, ever play for England again. I have seen England in a lot of World Cups over the years and that is the most disgraceful excuse for defence I have ever seen. Without trying to sound biassed, where was Dawson? At least he would have shown some leadership in defence, which was non-existent.
3. England and Italy fell for the same three card trick. Selection was based on past reputations and not on progressive talent.
4. Germany decided to go the progressive way and now look fantastic in attack. Something traditionally they have not been known for. If they get through Argentina, the Cup is their's.

And finally, as I stated in a previous post, Podolsky would be a great addition to our squad. An extremely good big occasion player with a great record at the top level for a player still relatively young.

Jun 28, 2010 at 2:53 PM | Unregistered CommenterMick From Hotspur

I think it is time to completely wipe the slate clean. The following should never get near the team again - Lampard, Gerrard, Ferdinand, Terry, Heskey and Barry.
The very first friendly at home to Hungary should have a good English or at least British manager in charge (rather hodgson than redknapp please) and only contain players under 30 years old with maybe one or two exceptions.
I genuinely feel sorry for people like lampard and gerrard who clearly do love playing for their country. But there´s only so many times someone can fail until they just can´t mentally see themselves suceeding. The so-called ´Golden Generation´ has not gone beyond a QF of any tournament and even failed to qualify for one of them. If anything they drag the side down completely.
It´s time for a new breed to come through (and we do have them around) whilst the younger players should stop being made to look up to the Lampards and Gerrards of this world and actually try to become their own players, confident in their own unique abilities. Players that can keep possession all over the pitch but also possess pace and intelligence.

They were just lucky that it was played in South Africa, if that was somewhere close to home the plastic chairs and water cannons would have been out, and that granny banger up front wouldn't have been worrying about being booed he would have been out cold care of some thug from millwall.
