Calum Davenport

Ex-Tottenham and current West Ham centre-back, Calum Davenport is in hospital being treated for stab wounds. West Ham have confirmed this (SSN run the story earlier). Calum's mum was also hurt in the attack. Shocking stuff. Hope he pulls through this ok. Not exactly the type of story you expect to be reading about on a Saturday afternoon.

Teenager arrested over stabbing

A teenager has been arrested after a man was found with a stab wound at a property in Bedfordshire, police said.

Officers were called to Springfield Road, Kempston, near Bedford, at 0500 BST and found the seriously injured 24-year-old.

His injury is not thought to be life-threatening, police said. Officers have set up a cordon at the scene and are carrying out house-to-house inquiries.

The 19-year-old man arrested over the assault is in police custody.

Bedfordshire Police have asked anyone with information to contact officers.

Horrible news. Not sure that BBC article is connected, unless the Beeb have got the age of Calum incorrect and there's no mention of a woman also being stabbed.

Seriously bad news, seems to be every other news story involves a stabbing or shooting, particularly London !. What the hell is going on over there ??. Absolutely shocking.

Has to be treated as suspicious. Stabbing someone in the leg, a footballer, sounds like its a premeditated crime although why Calum, who knows? And why his mum? That's fucking sick.

Duo arrested over football star's stabbing

A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after soccer star Calum Davenport and his mother were stabbed at a house in Kempston.

The 26-year-old £3m-rated West Ham defender, who comes from Bedford, suffered leg injuries in the early hours of Saturday morning (August 22) after an incident in Springfield Road.

Police were called to what is believed to be the family home at 5am where, according to the player’s spokesman, Mr Davenport had been attacked.

He was taken to Bedford South Wing Hospital and underwent surgery in the morning. His mother Kim, 49, was later said to be recovering.

Bedfordshire police said earlier that a 19-year-old male had been arrested in connection with the incident and remained in custody.

And police confirmed that a 25-year-old male has also been arrested, in Derby, and brought back to Bedfordshire for questioning on suspicion of attempted murder.

A statement on the West Ham website said: “West Ham can confirm that Calum Davenport was being treated in hospital after an incident late on Friday night.

“The 26-year-old defender and his mum both suffered stab wounds at home in Bedford. His mum is recovering while Calum underwent surgery and his injuries were described as serious by doctors.

“The club's medical team are in contact with hospital staff. The thoughts of everyone at West Ham are with Calum and his family and, due to the ongoing police investigation, no further information will be released at this time."

Davenport signed a three-and-a-half contract at West Ham in January 2006. He joined Watford on loan in 2008 but suffered a fractured bone in his neck following a collision with teammate Darius Henderson on his debut against Charlton.

Another man suffered stab wounds in Bedford town centre, also in the early hours of Saturday morning - a week after four people sustained knife cuts at a house party in Seaton Drive, Bedford. Police are investigating both incidents .

Shocking story. Really feel for the bloke and, especially, his family after his mother was involved too. There's no place for this kind of thing.

Terrible shocking news. Get well soon Calum and Mum.

Okay, I am one of the older Spurs supporters. But this country has lost it's way. What has happened to Calum comes about because we have lost our way in the UK.
I am lucky enough to be able to spend a lot of time in China a country with a 100 times more people than us. It has a lot less laws and forms to fill in, it respects others and when you do something wrong you have to pay the price for your crime. Plus, the jails are not known as Holiday Camps.
Thie goverments here have let us down and the cause of this terrible crime on Calum & his mum, I would like to wish them all the very best for the future and hope they get better very soon.

I'm horrified to hear this. Whether a footballler or otherwise, my heartfelt best wishes to Callum and his mum. Hope you make a full recovery. Get well soon

My thoughts are with Callum's family...to stab someone in the legs and then his mother is seriously sick...Get well soon.

These scumbags need to be locked up and beaten regularly. Too many people commit offences and end up in 'jail' (I use the term loosely) playing PS3's, watching TV, doing weights - I mean what's that all about????...enough is enough...someone needs to be made an example of asap!! Grrrrrrrrrrr........

Peter - you can't possibly blame the government for individual instances of crime like this. Every country and every government in the world is blighted by criminal scumbags at some point, no matter what their prisons are like and no matter how harshly they deal with these people. Unfortunately it's part of life. Sadly this sounds very much like Calum has found himself on the wrong side of the wrong people for reasons as yet unknown.

It's really sad that anything in life should come to this, but 'string them up' arguments don't solve problems that are far from black and white.

Hope he recovers soon anyway and the people responsible face the charges they should.
