Glory in China

3-0 win in the Asia Trophy final. DVD release set for next week. Open bus parade set for this Sunday. So, what did we learn? Well, for starters, can someone have a word with the organisers of these pre-season competitions (ha!) that having a Cup presentation followed by a photo-opportunity celebration with champagne simply does nothing but embarrass the players, who cringed more times than I do when watching David Brent swan around the office.

Robbie Keane (scorer of a brace – Lennon notching the third late on) attempting to get rid of the Cup, shrugging, with a look of a man who was probably saying, “What exactly am I meant to do with this?” No Irish jig here. It’s not exactly the Carling Cup now, is it?

I laughed even harder as the champagne was apologetically fizzed around as the players dispersed backwards, all looking for any reminisce of a worm-hole to save them with Keano still trying to rid himself of the trophy while his team-mates smiled nervously and continued to ignore him.

As for the game. Easy peasy. Some lovely football, Modric pulling the strings and everyone continuing to look fitter and sharper. Off to Hong Kong next for the squad.

Last time we won one of these (remember the Peace Cup?) we had a decent season. That's all I'm going to take out of this.

Anyways, back to The Ashes I go...

spooky...i agree...that post-game celebration was pretty amusing...keane totally had that 'wtf is this piece of s***?' look on his face when he got that trophy. looked like one of those trophies youd get for participating as a kid...

I know it is only a pre-season competition but why not look happy to have won it? Keane is the captain if he had picked the cup up and looked a bit more pleased about it maybe the other players would have followed his lead, He is the one who should set an example. Its not the greatest cup in the world but people pay money to watch these games so why not give them a bit of a show... At least look a little interested....

They were some funny pictures of the 'celebrations.' Good point about the Peace Cup in '05 though. Maybe we'll go out of both domestic cup competitions at the first opportunity as well, play a total of 40 games and get the right outcome at the end of the season! lol.

Forever optimistic aren't we (just can't help it - it's like a disease).

Good scoreline though today. Another 'WHL 1-0' against the scousers will do though. In fact, if that happens I think I'll avoid the rest of the season and just convince myself we won the league.

What a differnce a week makes. I havent got to see the match yet, but last week Keane was being written off after poor displays at Wembley, he gets a brace today and people are praising him, we can be very fickle, as I said after Celtic match it is only pre season and that is about fitness and getting sharpe, I am very concerned about CB positions as Torres and Co. will go through our makeshift defence like a knife through butter

Or Stevie G's fist through someone's face lol. It's another conspiracy - he should be in jail by August 16th! lol.

Torres does worry me though. At least they may be without Alonso (great player) by then.

Bring 'em on!

I swear we're going all out attck this season like the good days. More 5-4 scorelines!

The fact is we won 3.0 today and although it was only Hull we won which is more than we did at the begining of last season against them. Hope the Liverpool game goes well (even though im not going) again hope we win next week as I am going then 3 weeks wait till Birmingham game.

Anyone else would be in jail, sure they lock ours up for no reason (JD) lol, Liverpool may well be without Alonso and maybe even Mascarenus by then, not sure if could face us going back to Ossie style of management as I am older now and not sure heart could take it lol.

haven't seen it yet !.................sky + it ........so thanks for ruining my friday evening TV ! : )

agree that the captain should set an example regarding player conduct ....not for a minute suggesting they should celebrate like theyv'e one the champions league , but a little dignity in accepting a mickey mouse trophy goes a long way and we would look more like a proffesional outfit if we accepted these with good grace .

great blog spooky ! .......nice to see sir bobby got a mention !

Good display, players have a little bit of a buzz about them but feet firmly on the ground. Good to see.

Good performances in both games against teams who we should beat without being at our best. It's only pre season, so there is still a degree of match sharpness lacking in cetain areas. It's centre back which is the only problem for me with plenty of strong options across the midfield and frontline, and given the current scenario I fully expect Ledley to be wheeled out for the Liverpool game with Corluka his most likely partner in the centre of defence. I was impressed by Keane both today and against West Ham, and thought his work rate and touch play was first rate, at least we know that the forwards will all be hungry to impress, meaning I think it would be realistic to expect a 60 goal return from our 4 forwards this season.
